I'm semi new to sewing & I watched so many complicated videos on how to make ruffles & this is by far the easiest one in terms of instructions and visual process.
Thank you so much!!! I want to make Lolita dresses but I don’t know much about sewing (Lolita dresses are very pricey, for a good reason they are all so high quality and detailed and take so much time)
Two words Thank you! I can’t tell you how may DIY Ruffle videos I’ve watched on RUclips ONLY to end up frustrated because they did not explain or demonstrate properly and entirely enough to understand how to make the ruffle. Thank you, for being so detailed and organized ☺️
So glad I could help you Sabrina! I also have a playlist with a set of 5 learn to sew classes that will walk you through a lot as well: ruclips.net/p/PLppxTOkh07MfSx1-ANtLfz5NWXuSahA-1 happy sewing!!!!
I've always like that method where you sew 2 (and 3 is better) rows - and then gather them up. Those gathers look really lovely. Have you ever tried loosening your top tension to do them, rather than using normal tension? That's what I was taught as a kid, and we always pulled up the bobbin threads to gather. We'd tend to use a rather long stitch too but shorter stitches would work if we needed them for really fine fabrics and/or something at a smaller scale (e.g. baby's clothes). If the gathers are too big on those they can look more like pleats... Loosening the top tension made it really easy to gather because the upper thread is pulled to the underside a little and the bobbin stitch is more like a "straight line" under the fabric. The stitches are not "locking" as tightly as they do with normal tension top and bottom. If we were worried the threads might break on really long gathers then we'd load the bobbin up with an extra-strong or heavy duty thread. (Every sewing kit should have some - black, white and a couple of "blending" greys!) In desperation we were even known to load up the bobbin with dental floss! :-)
Hi Megan, Funny that I adjust tension for the first method but never considered it for the second method. Your suggestions are genius and I will be giving them a try! I love the idea of using a thicker bobbin thread as well. oooohhhhh! This will be fun! Thank you so much for sharing, a seamstress is never done learning. :)
Nice tutorial. I'm teaching myself how to sew and I am on to making my second dress. Which is testing my abilities, to say the least. LOL I think I'd like a ruffle button so I was looking for an easy tutorial and, "Voila" I found your channel. Thank you for making it seem (seam...hahaha) so/sew easy.
Thank you for this tutorial! I already had to run out and buy some more fusible stabilizer; I really didn't want to run out and drop 30 bucks on a ruffler attachment for my sewing machine.
Second method: 4:50 Loosen top tension as per commenter Megan Mills’ suggestion. Do not back stitch (do not go back and then forward in beginning). Use fabric 3x length of edge/border length. Fold along width. Add 3 rows of stitches along open side to join them. Stitches should be roughly 1/4” apart, making sure the long end threads do not cross. Pull the fabric along the threads to ruffle the fabric. Attach to project (between quilt layers) and seam rip if any stitching lines are showing.
This is SUCH a helpful tutorial!! So many sewing tutorials are made by very skilled people who forget that some of us are not skilled and cannot see what they're doing 😭 I love how you made sure to show every step of the process and I feel so much better about this step of my project. (also that quilt looks so cute... I suddenly want to reconsider my stance on quilting. Maybe I *would* would like to make my own quilts...)
Hello, I am a Totally New Beginner to Quilting 😋 & I came across your channel recently 😁 thank you for all your tips/tricks & Tutorials for your beautiful Rag Quilts 💕 also loved your puffed quilted blanket & this ruffle edging just finished off beautifully 💜 Erica x
Thank you 😊 and welcome! I sure enjoy making them. Will you be making one? If you do let me know how it goes for you💜and if you have any questions just ask! I love helping people with their projects 💝
Serger: Left and Right needles: 7 Upper and Lower loopers: 3 Stitch length: 4 Differential feed: 2.5 Ooodles of gorgeous ruffles in SECONDS!!! Test of fabric scrap similar to your “good fabric” and increase length of fabric as gathers formed “shrink” up yardage. 😊😍
Will this method word to make a nice wave in the material? I need to make a piano curtain for our church and would like it to have a nice wave instead of straight. I plan to use long Velcro strips to adhere the curtain to the base of the piano.
It should work. The easy method works on one layer of fabric. The other method works but will take time if you are working with a large piece of fabric. I recently made a table skirt for my sewing room and used a ruffler foot as it was a larger project.
My go to calculation is to take the measurement of the item and times it by 3. But it is still a rough guess. The nice thing about these two ruffle methods is the ruffle can be adjusted to fit the item. Hope that helps! Happy sewing 🧵
Hey! Just connected here from Think media's last video with Vanessa and Cathrin :) Loved it! Great video great content my friend. Love the videos that you put out keep pushing and working hard Let's connect :)
I don’t know what I’m doing or not doing but when I do the highest tension/longest stitch length (straight stitch) settings my machine keeps eating the thread. I’ve tried everything I can think of & same problem. I’m throwing my machine off a cliff.
If that isn’t working then just try the method where you do a long basting stitch at normal tension and then pull the thread to create the ruffle. If you are having more issues with your sewing machine then perhaps this video may help you: ruclips.net/video/DWPGsK-C93w/видео.html I walk you through all the things that may be going wrong. Some solutions are as simple as trying a new bobbin. Don’t give up just yet!
If neither of these options work you can do a zig zag stitch across some yarn. Make sure not to sew into the yarn at all. And then you can pull the yarn to create a ruffle. Pin, baste, and remove the yarn entirely. You can see this method done here: ruclips.net/video/AvQEh0p3sXs/видео.html
I'm making a cosplay for my oc miss mortus. She is a lady pirate and I want to make it fantasy pirate style with a bit of history to it. I need a skirt and a pirate shirt.
I just love that you covered every single detail, a lot of people forget machine settings which is one of the most important things! thank you 💕

Seen alot of ruffle videos. This one was actually helpful and not annoying . Simple and effective
So glad to hear that Erina! That is my goal for all my videos. As short and sweet as possible.

looking to use this ruffle tutorial to add ruffles to the tentacles on a jellyfish stuffed animal really helpful.
Ooh! That sounds like an awesome sewing project!!!😍
If you have to sew several strips together to make it long enough, will the ruffling work with the seams?
That was super helpful :) thanks!
Thanks for the tutorial. With second method, the threat tears when pulling. Any solutions to this?

Thanks for sharing Jude!!
What is width of piece of fabric for both easy and other? Looks about 4,inches but not sure
I'm gonna make a bunch of clowns with this useful information. Thank You!
Do you use gathering foor press?
For the two versions in the tutorial I didn’t. But yes, I do own one and like to use it for pleats.
on measuring your project ...is it length + width times 3?
You are just trying to figure out the length so just the length times 3. Hope that helps.
I nearly bought a $45 ruffle foot!
If it's not a macanical machine is the longest the 1 or 9 and same for tension
I am sorry Lilly. I wish I knew the answer to that but sadly I do not.

how to make ruffle on double gauze material?
Can someone tell me how to calculate how long your ruffle needs to be to fit the item you want to put it on?
My go to calculation is to take the measurement of the item and times it by 3. But it is still a rough guess. The nice thing about these two ruffle methods is the ruffle can be adjusted to fit the item. Hope that helps! Happy sewing 🧵
Ty this helps now thst I don’t buy prelate ones lol
Pre made
I couldnt pull the thread to tighten it

I tried this and it did not work, any tips?
Which one did you try Kristina? If neither of these options worked for you then you may have to try using a ruffle sewing foot.
What if u just use 2 lines?
If it is a shorter ruffle two should be just fine. If it is longer then three is less risk as sometimes the thread 🧵 snaps
For small length gathering this is okay, but not practical for 5m fabric gathering..
my thread isn't strong enough 😭
If neither of these options work you can do a zig zag stitch across some yarn. Make sure not to sew into the yarn at all. And then you can pull the yarn to create a ruffle. Pin, baste, and remove the yarn entirely. You can see this method done here: ruclips.net/video/AvQEh0p3sXs/видео.html
