This guy is great for reiterating safety issues. It is easy to forget or take for granted that everything will turn out okay but sometimes it does not.
I have recently started watching your videos. You are definitely one of my favorites on RUclips. You explain things well and have an easy way of talking. Great videos, thanks for the help.
Good Job. You could extend the template rails/guides to about 12" or so and then clamp them with small clamps and in that way you would not have to rely on hand pressure to the template.
very nice demo. its your simplicity in making the jig is what i like. great demo. i liked the part where you said "this is real time right there..." very cool. please keep doing these videos.
I’ll definitely keep it in mind moving forward and try to share when I can! Another option in the meantime is to find a picture online and print it out. You could attach it to your template with spray adhesive and use that for the initial shape.
Hi, really nice work. Just a quick thought about your jig. If you fitted two pieces of timber on the opposite face and diagonal, you could have choice of two styles of grip.
I just made that comment yesterday! Told some other woodworkers that the router is more dangerous than a table saw! That bit can pull your hand in faster than you can react!
Part of my Christian ministry as a wood worker, I make what I call are Jesus Plaques. They are a 3-D illusion that spell the word "Jesus". The first time you look at it the word is not readily apparent since the "void" between the characters actually spell the word. I would love to send you one. If you would like one, give me your address. I mass produce about 20 to 30 at a time. Joe Malham.
You could also put strips of sand paper on the parts that hold the edges of the cutting board. That would help keep it from riding up while you are routing the hole.
New sub...was hoping 6:8 was a reference...couldn’t figure it out til I saw your shirt in this vid...well I only checked one book...I got it now...love it...and loving all your vids , started making boards this year myself and have probably done upwards of 50! Finding your channel super helpful already! Blessings bro!
Love it! Yeah, RUclips is newer for me, and it’s mostly just the tutorials. I talk more regularly about the verse and my faith over on Instagram as it lends itself to those opportunities.
Absolutely! The bit I’m using is a 1/4” shank that will work with palm routers. I’d still build a basic router table for it though. Jay Bates has a good video on a simple compact router table.
Excellent idea. I will be making that jig today. And I will be using 3/4 +wood glue +brad nails. Thanks for the tip man. Xmas has been super busy and this will definitely help me batch out some boards
There’s probably a way you could do it, but I’d make a simple plywood box you can clamp down as a router table for safety sake. Pretty straightforward, and works with trim routers too. Here’s a look at a simple DIY version: instagram.com/tv/CAReu4ijclI/?igshid=1l51zjizqxrio
Great Video as always, Thank you for sharing. I know I asked if you were from the Seattle area being a Hawk fan and all. What part of Seattle are you in? We Live in Graham.
I have the standard 12 1/2” lunchbox planer. For one of the styles shown in the video, I planed a longer glue up and then cross cut it into three boards. I try to avoid planing perpendicular to the grain; however, I have done it. It just backs up the planer with wood ribbons.
As long as it starts flat, is regularly maintained with oil/wax, and grain orientation was taken into account with dry and acclimated wood, there shouldn’t be any issues.
Well done on showing what didn’t work. As far as triangle for these boards would suggest you give a goal of 1/16” to the line before routing if possible- no more than 1/8”. I think you said “close”. Good video and will use the template idea. Thanks
I made this router table for my trim router a few years back and switched out the top when I got a bigger router. Just plywood and a few screws. Nothing fancy. Jay Bates has a pretty good diy router table video for trim routers too.
Hello how are you doing my I want to purchase some boards but everything it’s pretty much sold out wanted to know when new ones will be for sale thanks
Thank you so much for your interest. Unfortunately, it will be a while before I’m able to make another batch. Possibly this summer. Thanks again for your interest!
First thanks for your videos I have probably watched most of them. Do you ever have problems with the cutting boards cupping? I did a few edge grain 1 1/4" and use a drum sander to flatten after glue up after putting my feet on I notice I have a cup in them and had to use a nylon washer on one foot to get it to lay flat. I am not sure if it is from over-clamping that is causing this ( I am using 4 clamps on the bottom and then 3 on top). Any idea of why I would be getting this and how to avoid it. I am gluing 14- 20 pieces some are 1/4" wide other 3/4" - 1 1/4" wide. Board are around 17" x 12" finished. Any info would be appreciated
That’s a bummer. Sounds like you have a solid solution. Unequal clamping pressure can certainly contribute. Other possibilities would be with mixing species and grain direction. Maybe different moisture contents in the woods? Growth ring orientation?
The boards can vary in size. I’d keep it under an inch high as most flush trim bits max out right around there. I usually use this design for small boards around 9-10” x 12-16”
Instead of using your hand to hold in the template I would have used a couple clamps to hold it firm and that would leave both hands to control the work piece
Great video. But I wouldn't trust just a glue to hold it tight. Why wouldn't you use some brad nails just to be sure it will not going to pop off? Also how about some clamps to help you hold a jig? Just my 2 cents.
I’ll second the potential danger of routers. Had 1 that served me well for over 25 years fail on me while making a drawer front. It ended up eating itself when the plunge mechanism broke & I ended up with a piece of metal embedding itself in my chest. A half inch deeper & I wouldn’t be here today.
Been woodworking for almost 30 years, each of your videos gives me tailwind and they're just fun to watch. Great job and thanks!

Excellent variation on the theme. These make a great option for a bit smaller and cheaper board.
For sure. Definitely nice to have a variety and the smaller/cheaper ones available.
I really like the look of the boards with the handle.
Thanks so much!
I like how you mentioned your DiResta ice pick. I saw his video when he made them. That’s cool that you got one. Thanks for the time and videos.
Yeah. Jimmy’s the man!
I really appreciate the thought put into the jigs design and durability. Just subscribed, keep up the good work!!

Thanks! Happy New Year!
Great video! In my case I think I'll just go for a 3d print for the template 👍

I love the Micah Bile reference.

Awesome! Brad nails and wood glue are a great combo! Just did a bunch of projects yesterday with them. Great little mini clamps while the glue dries!
how did you make that jig? please Thanks...
Love your videos, you explain everything so well
Thank you so much!
Cool, thanks.
East side Washingtonian here...love the video with all the tips! Just starting to get into making cutting boards. Love the shirt and verse even more!
Appreciate it brother. Have fun with boards!

great idea
Thanks!

What is the size of these cutting board
Great video and idea! Q: looking at your cutting boards, do you have a wide planer, or plane them against the grain, or just drum sander?
I have the standard 12 1/2” lunchbox planer. For one of the styles shown in the video, I planed a longer glue up and then cross cut it into three boards. I try to avoid planing perpendicular to the grain; however, I have done it. It just backs up the planer with wood ribbons.
How do you stop the cutting boards from getting crooked after a while? Best greetings from Germany
As long as it starts flat, is regularly maintained with oil/wax, and grain orientation was taken into account with dry and acclimated wood, there shouldn’t be any issues.
Awesome Tips and great content. Can you do a video on wood types for cutting board?
Thanks! I talk a bit about wood varieties in my cutting board 101 video here: ruclips.net/video/RTsKsDJoX2E/видео.html
Does it tear out badly with end grain cutting boards?
Haven’t tried on end grain. Would imagine it would be a challenge to avoid tear out.
@@SixEightWoodworks I imagine you're right. Thanks for the quick reply.
Wonderfull 👍
What are the dimensions of the board you are using for this? Thanks!
These are about 7-8”x12”x3/4”-1” thick
Thank you!

Oh- and would highly recommend double stick tape or the blue tape with cryo glue technique to hold the template.
How about using brad nails with the glue to hold sides of jig
Absolutely! Love that method. The jig should never come in contact with the bit, so fasteners like brads or screws are actually a great idea to use.
6.8 been studying and trying to figure what Book you are referring to.
Micah 6:8
@@SixEightWoodworks ill read it later today.
What's the measurement of the cheese board?
Nice work!
Thanks dude
The spiral bit only works if you have a router table, not a hand held. The bearing is only at the tip. I only have a hand held router.
I made this router table for my trim router a few years back and switched out the top when I got a bigger router. Just plywood and a few screws. Nothing fancy. Jay Bates has a pretty good diy router table video for trim routers too.
What type or name was that flush trim bit
It’s the Whiteside spiral listed here: www.amazon.com/shop/6_8woodworks?ref=inf_pub_6_8woodworks
Under the bits list.

Why not add a couple brad nails once the glue dries. Would add a enough strengh.

Hi. Do you film with your phone?
Sure do
Great video. It's depressing that the scrap board on your drill press is better than a lot of the board I have access to
how thick do you make your boards?
For these smaller boards, usually around 3/4-1”
@@SixEightWoodworks Thank you.

So many variables with that, would be hard to get a number. I’m just happy to break even with the hobby and get some good donations to charities.

Absolutely! Go Hawks! I’m up in Lake Stevens.
What are the measurements of these bords
These are somewhere around 8-9” x 12” About 3/4” thick.
Nice project. Suggestion, just add some screws to the jig to hold the sides....
Yep, mentioned at the end adding fasteners. Just another reminder for myself to slow down.
Do you have boards for sale?

Why wouldn’t you use just some wood glue instead of CA clue??!!
Talking about safety... Use screws will make it stronger along with wood glue. Just stating the obvious.
