    The RX 6800 XT has been one of the best value GPUs in its price class for a long time now. Now that the RTX 4070 is available, has it dethroned the 6800 XT as the best value GPU in the price class? Well unfortunately, the 4070 launched at a high enough price that they are not even direct price competitors, and the 4070 is competing more directly with the 6950 XT (watch my full comparison here: • RTX 4070 vs RX 6950 XT... ). But does the 4070 offer enough benefits over the cheaper 6800 XT to consider the upsell? Let's find out in the RTX 4070 vs RX 6800 XT ultimate comparison in the latest games and engines including Unreal Engine 5, RT on/off, DLSS and FSR on/off, and Frame Generation on/off.

    The fact that this brand new 4070 is competing against the 6800xt launched 2.5 yrs ago is very telling. Nvidia is the new Intel in terms of price stagnation. The RTX 4070 is a good card for sure, but not particularly exciting at $600. It would be much more enticing at $500-550. It uses WAY less power than 3080 and 6800 XT. You can realistically run a 4070 on a good 550 watt PSU (cheaper than what you need for 3080 and 6800 XT), and your power bill will also be lower. The 40 series in general doesn't have the same transient power draw spikes that the 30 series and 6000 series had. I'm running a 4070 Ti with a Ryzen 7 5800x with 4 case fans, 3 SSDs, & a HDD, and it just barely touches 500 watts total power draw in the most demanding games. Most of the time it stays well under 500 watts while gaming. I have an EVGA 650 watt PSU powering the whole thing flawlessly.

    VCore = 1020 mV
    Core MHz = 2450
    Mem MHz = 2100
    I get higher FPS than with default settings whilst saving about 25-30% of power. The Maximum I reach is 220W, whilst I saw some 270W on your benchmark. Temps are at 72 C.
    The max I can go for is 2800 MHz at 1150 mV (stock), +15% Power Limit and fan speed at ~50% and 90-92 C. It net's me another performance boost but the power draw goes up to 290 W.
    TL;DR:
    If you undervolt your 6800 XT, you get the same performance as the 4070 with the same energy efficiency for about 100-150 bucks less. (I bought mine for 509 Euro, whereas the 4070 goes for 639 Euro)

    I've watched a lot of interviews recently where they interview programmers from the industry and the point is always the same. Consoles have 16gb of unified memory and it's getting too hard to limit games to 8gb or so just to cater to PC gamers. I hate it because I use DLSS a lot but I'm at a point where 12gb feels like it's going to go extinct kinda like 8g sooner rather than later. NVIDIA really seems to hate going beyond the minimum VRAM-wise of late.
    My next upgrade GPU-wise is likely to be toward the end of the year and I'm hoping the market forces NVIDIA and AMD to push their prices down further. I may well end up with a 12gb card if that's where the best value ends up but I'm really hoping to get 16gb so I won't feel rushed to upgrade again soon. VRAM will definitely be one of my top priorities. I really hope the 7800/7700 cards make that an easy choice for me.

    • @CyberneticArgumentCreator
      @CyberneticArgumentCreator Год назад +2

      It's laziness. The PC platform has, typically, 32 to 48GB of RAM spread over VRAM and system RAM. The people making the games are too lazy to properly optimize for loading things into one or the other since the consoles have a single huge pile of RAM, essentially, and it isn't needed over there. So they load the total RAM usage into just half of the hardware (the GPU) and don't bother spending the labor time to change resource management.

    • @danabell2709
      @danabell2709 Год назад +1

      @@CyberneticArgumentCreator You may well be correct but it hardly matters. If I want to play AAA games a year from now, I have to work with what they create or just not play. It sounds like they are pushing those requirements higher. Since there is no sense having a video card if I cannot play the games I like, I have to try and plan what I buy around what I want to play. Luckily the games I play now have lower requirements and Diablo 4 worked fine at 1440p with DLSS Quality on my 3070ti. So I'll probably have until autumn before I have to seriously consider it.
      I don't see a lot of choice though at the moment. 8gb is going the way of the dinosaur and 12gb sounds like it's inching closer to extinction itself. So assuming the market cooperates, I hope to futureproof a bit soon with 16gb. I don't want to have to buy another one for at least a few years after that.

      Nope, games are made with consoles in mind, they are their primary customers and PC gamers are a secondary market. The reason for the rise in VRAM now is because games have finally made the switch to use the latest gen consoles and so are a little more demanding than they were last year when games were still being released on both this gen and last gen consoles. The 3 previous gens of Nvidia '70 series cards were all 8GB VRAM, the 1070, 2070 and 3070 and before that you had the 970 with 4GB which was released on September 2014.... @@freefall_910 No it wont and you're insane if you believe the PS5 will do better... I mean, explain how a PS5 that runs on old older tech will do better than the 4070? The PS5 will not get any better and the games themselves are made primarily for the console market so they wont push the boundraries much either. The reason the 3070 struggled was because it released when games were transitioning from last gen consoles to this gen and the same thing happened when the 970 (4GB) was released a year after last gen consoles came out and GPU VRAM was spiked to 8GB in the later generations since the 1070 (8GB) until the 3070 (8GB) and the 4070 is the new 1070 so 12GB will probably be the norm for this range.
      Eitherway, it all doesn't matter as 8GB is still good enough for 1080p resolution and that's what it was always marketed at so it still has a use in todays gaming world.

The 3070 is best optimised for high framerate 1080p, yes it can play at 1440p but ideally you want to be playing at least at 120fps because most gaming monitors today run at 120hz or more and it gives a much smoother experience than playing at 60fps. The only reason 60fps is considered the "norm" is because of console gamers and games trying to at least reach 60fps for gaming on such older tech while PC gamers have the luxury to game at higher framerates and this is why games wont get anymore demanding because then consoles game will struggle to reach that 60fps ideal.
      The '70 series only started being a 1440p card with the 3070 as the tech finally made it viable and more people started using 1440p as their standard resolution but before that, the series cards were always best suited for high settings at 1080p.
      I will probably get a 4070 or 4070 ti secondhand simply for the price/performance because energy prices are high here and that lower energy draw makes these cards much cheaper to run and will save me over £100 a year in energy bills over the 6950xt or 7900xt so the argument that AMD is cheaper is subjective if you ignore the running costs of the card over it's lifetime.

    The power consumption difference between the two is bigger than what is being reported by Afterburner/RTSS (or other software like HWinfo64 etc)
    They only show TGP (total Graphics power) not TBP (total board power) for RDNA2 cards.
    What's being reported for the 4070 is accurate though as this is the actual TBP.
    His 6800 XT is really 300W+ TBP (6800 XT reference TBP is 300W and he's using he TUF that is even more power hungry)

    Quick question. When you do the benchmarks for 1080p and 1440p you use the same 4k monitor and just reduce the resolution? Wouldn't that sometimes give not accurate performance and also image quality? Or it doesn't affect at all ?

    • @danielowentech
      @danielowentech  Год назад +3

      Performance is based on the resolution the GPU is being asked to render, not the screen it is hooked up to. When reviewers test GPUs they are not hooking up a different monitor every time they test a different resolution. Also, I'm running through a capture card in a second PC so the PC I am testing does not even know what monitor I'm actually viewing it on. Regarding image quality, if I wanted to see it displayed accurately at the native resolution that is being tested but on my 4K screen, I can letterbox to the correct resolution.

    Thanks for highlighting the use of FG/DLSS/RT. The features that you pay (extra) for when you buy a Nvidia GPU - and realistically turn them on when playing games.
    I feel reviews that strictly stick to orange to orange comparisons (i.e. only raw raster and RT with no image scaling) do not paint a realistic scenario. i.e. you wont be buying a Nvidia GPU and not turn those on in games. FG seems like DLSS 1.0 currently, and "should" be better in a year's time/down the road.
    When AMD delivers FSR3 (i really hope they do, it would benefit everyone) - FG would become more commonplace and no longer a Nvidia only feature (much like how DLSS was before FSR).
    On the VRAM front, things like sampler feedback and DS 1.1 (there's a nice Intel video showing the benefit) would help alleviate low VRAM situations, once developers implement them in games. Hopefully it's something that catches on and does'nt have too much cons (nothing comes for free i believe) that makes it not worthwhile.

      10ms more latency is a bs argument. framegen is nowhere as unplayable as dlss1.0 imo. Don't count on AMD they got smoked by Intel's XESS and still hasn't delivered a solution after all these years.

    You are right about certain games preferring Nvidia gpu's than AMD. For example, for Bethesda games you will get 20 or more FPS over the AMD gpu's. But the extra v-cache of the AMD CPU's such as the x3d cards Bethesda games love them.

    Any comparison goes right out the window when you factor in memory compression (equals another 2 GB VRAM on the 4060), that 1440p DLSS looks better than native temporal AA and you can even go better than that with DLAA mods which just require some sharpening over the top like reshade cas.fx. DLSS and AI AA is the killer feature, not ray tracing. That's just a bonus.
    The 6800xt was the best bang 4 buck last gen, but atm you will get a worse looking game on the AMD GPU than the 4070, frame gen is a complete game changer if you have a 1440p high hz (like 120 and up) gsync/freesync display. If you think framegen is going to go well on AMD you are also pretty delusional. It's having major growing pains with Nvidia and they have way more money to spend on R&D and can leverage specialized hardware.
    The only people who should be considering a 6800xt is someone who only plays FPS shooters. Smart access memory and 1 percent lows is a nice combination. 4070 is a great product, 4070Ti needed more VRAM cus it's an actual 4k GPU, not 4k upscaling only and last gen Nvidia was inefficient garbage. You should have been buying 6800's LAST gen and the same tech journalists who downplayed them now are telling you to buy them. Too late. IF you had bought them last gen then maybe Nvidia would have to try harder or sell the chip to their aftermarkets for cheaper.
