One of the really cool things about Voiceplay is that they do so much of the non-singing work themselves. Including arranging all of their own music (they do hire occasional assistance for some guest artists, especially when the feature female vocalists). Most of the arrangements are done by Geoff (the bass) or Layne (the beatboxer), though Eli (the Tenor 2) has started flexing in that arena lately as well. This particular tune was arranged by Layne and Eli, and yeah, they nailed it. Since you enjoyed Omar Cardona, Voiceplay did do one other song with him as a guest - Superstition (originally by Stevie Wonder). You may want to check that out.
Omar's brother EJ is featured on Voiceplay's cover of GO the Distance and is a member of Voctave. Rect to Voctave's ..Oh Come All Ye Faithful. EJ sings the lead and his voice is awesome.
the fun thing about the Voiceplay guys, is that all of them have a much bigger range than their "label" in the group. Geoff is actually a baritone, but mainly sings bass and also has no problem going all the way up to tenor with his 5 octave range. Eli is the tenor, but also has a beautiful baritone range and can even sing some bass. Layne is the beatboxer, but also is a great baritenor and also plays violin, and he can also do some bass notes. J. None is the baritone but can also do tenor and bass, and plays the violin. Oh, and ALL the guys can actually do a fair bit of beatboxing :D
Geoff has claimed he is a baritone with a bass range, but I disagree, wholeheartedly. I have ran his normal speaking voice through a spectrum analyzer and it averages around 77Hz, or about Eb2; the average bass singer only reaches E2 (Geoff's normal speaking voice is lower than what the average bass singer can even reach singing), and their normal voice frequency is up around 90Hz.
@@laundrygoddess4, my main instrument is guitar, but I also play piano, cello, violin, viola, double bass, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, glockenspiel, and pretty much anything else that isn't driven by wind-power or reed. Once you play one stringed instrument, keyed, tuned instrument with notes in a row, they can all be learned; they are only different disciplines and tunings... with modern stringed instruments being tuned in 4ths and bowed instruments in 5ths.
Really enjoyed your honest reaction and breakdown! I love this one by VoicePlay - such a unique cover. They just released a cover of Queen's song "You're My Best Friend", which is also excellent. I recommend checking that one out!
Geoff does make it seem effortless. He doesn't strain to hit the lows. When he does hit them, he can go right back to any of his range in a completely smooth and clean fashion. That's taken a great deal of practice. Heck, if you listen to some of their early songs and then now he's gotten noticeably better. The same goes for the rest of the group. Eli didn't seem to get as much chance to shine until Earl left and now.....
I love this cover, and it's really cool that you recognized Eli already, he is so talented and has such a wide range. He also does voices so well too. Geoff is such an easy "gateway" into Voiceplay, he's so talented and they really work his entire range, so he typically impresses first, but then you dig in and really learn just how good every single one of these guys is. So much talent, so much work, and knowing that the vast majority of the work (arranging, editing, etc) of all their videos is all them as well just makes it that much cooler in my opinion. I think because they do most of the arrangements, they know just how to arrange for their set of voices, and even when to push each other which just makes them better and better. Glad you enjoyed this one, looking forward to what you dig into next.
You named off the Trifecta of Acapella groups -- Home Free (fans are called Home Fries), Voice Play (Voice Players) and Pentatonix (Pentaholics). The Trifecta of Basses are Tim Foust (Home Free), Geoff Castellucci (Voice Play) and Avi Kaplan (formerly of PTX). All 3 have 5 Octave ranges, although Tim's is almost 6 at this point. Are there other Acapella groups and Basses out there? Of course. But, these are the best of the best. Enjoy :)
Slight correction - Omar Cardona is the guest tenor. His brother, EJ Cardona, is in Voctave, and was the guest tenor for their cover of Go the Distance (another great cover).
Geoff has some Q&A’s on his RUclips channel. Also some of his tips and tricks. Really great solo stuff there too. Great breakdown. I totally got the low tuned slap bass reference. He does sound just like that.
Eli can actually sing bass, baritone and tenor. His chest range goes from B1 to E5. 3 octaves and 5 semitones! Geoff's chest range btw is F#1 to B4. Also 3 octaves and 5 semitones... J None's (nearly 3 octaves) and Layne's (3 octaves and 3 semitones) are also just mind blowing xD
One thing to note, in almost every Voiceplay video, the featured singer starts in the middle. Also, Earl isnt with them anymore. So, from left to right Geoff Castellucci (Bass Beast), Eli (pronounced Eh Lee) Jacobson (Tenor, Arrangement), Omar Cardona (Guest Tenor), J. None (Baritone/Tenor, we miss him), Layne Stein (Vocal Percussion, Arrangement, Producer)
Omar's brother EJ sings with Voctave ( 11 member acapella group) . He sings lead on OH Come All Ye Faithful and has an incredible voice. Another acapella rabbit hole.
voiceplay always brings in so much Joy ................... for me... for them... There are an other amazing und funny Interpretation of Superstition also with Omar Cardona
If you want to hear one of the best covers of “Creep”, listen to Brian Justin Crum’s official video (in black and white) of the full length version of this song. He was bullied growing up and this is a truly touching rendition. His vocal abilities and breath control are amazing. It gets me teary every time I listen to him sing and he makes me really feel the song (notice the tear drop running down his face at the end of the video). I look forward to seeing your reaction to his video and I am a fan of your reaction videos (especially PTX … I love Mitch as well).
Members: Geoff (bass) Eli (Tenor) (it sound like "Ellie" tho) J. None (Baritone) (He just left the group to go to the Navy) Layne (Beatboxer) (The guy in the far right) Some suggestions are Warriors, The Little Mermaid Medley, Moana Medley, Boy Band Medley, Queen in 5 minutes, Can't help falling in love and Survivor ft. Home Free
Lovely reaction. Vocal Percussion/ Beatbox is Layne Stien. Described by Geoff as "spitting disgusting things from his mouth:". Nice. To be fair, he is also a good singer in the bass/baritone range. Warriors is great though not strictly acapella as you'll see Layne and J.None adding violins.
VoicePlay was on Sing-Off back in 2014 or 15 and did a routine that is called Road Trip. I didn't see that you had reacted to it and thought you might get a kick out of it.
Haven't heard you in awhile so I'll put some more VoicePlay and Geoff solos. Nothing Else Matters (Metallica - Chicago heard VP do this and invited them to share the stage with them in NJ for Chicago and Friends last November), In the Air Tonight (Phil Collins), Creep (Radiohead), Valhalla Calling (Miracle of Sound), Hellfire (Hunchback of Notre Dame), their post-apocalyptic trilogy - Warriors (Imagine Dragons), Dream On (Aerosmith), Seven Nation Army (White Stripes), Black Hole Sun, Sleeping in the Cold Below (Warframe), In the Hall of the Mountain King, Classical Chaos, Total Eclipse of the Heart, Drunken Sailor, Whiskey in the Jar, and Geoff Big Iron, UnShaken, Misty Mountains Cold, I See Fire, Song of Durin, Imagine, Wicked Game, and so many more great ones. You react and I'll listen!
Love your reactions, Geoff and Layne together create an insane base, Eli has a great range, will miss J None's soulful, velvety voice and I miss Earl's screeching tenor. I wonder who they'll bring in now
A lot of acapella groups would have taken the melody line and built chords on it. Voiceplay actually vocally reproduces a lot of the instrumental lines.
I keep trying to listen to Voctave but usually can't hear anything except the sopranos screaming in my ears. Any suggestions where they're more toned down so I can hear everyone else?

There isn't a weak link in the group, and that is a huge part of what I love about them. Even when they team up with people, they just completely blow the whole thing out of the water. I'm in the group of people who are going to be shattered when JNone leaves the group... I'm still recovering from Earl's departure. I do think that Deejay Young is shaping up to be a good new standing member of the group, I just need to see him in something more theatrical to put the full seal of approval, but I'm willing to give him the chance for that.
