As a British person, tea has two meaning. The working class/common people call dinner/ evening meal, (tea or teatime) reference for food. High tea was a meal served early in the evening in working-class homes during the 18th and 19th century after a hard day at work.
The main meal of the day, served on the ‘high’, or main dining table. It’s why many people still call their evening meal, tea.

Alice and wonderland didn't make tea parties popular, they have been around for centuries, and tea time is a semi meal in the UK.

Thank you! I was like "WTH?!" when she said that. As if societies all over the world hadn't been drinking tea, having "tea parties"/gatherings or cultural ceremonies/traditions for many centuries before Alice In Wonderland. AIW only gave them permission to be pyschodelic.

High Tea is dinner. It includes an entrée, two sides and cake. It is served at 6:00 p.m. A
Creamed Tea is served in the afternoon and has petite fours and other sweet things to eat.

Afternoon tea was 'invented' in Tavistock, West Devon, England by the 7th Duchess of Bedford because the time between breakfast and the main dinner (approx 8pm) was far too long and she needed something to keep her going til then x

Hopefully, since this was several years ago, Americans now know the difference between high tea (an early evening meal by the working class on tall tables) and afternoon tea (snacks to tide over until dinner by the nobility/rich served on low/coffee table).

Why is it always americans who tell us how to do high tea or afternoon tea
Why are no british people telling us! Ive lived in england for 9 years and no ones ever mentioned afternoon tea

    • @tiwantiwaabibiman2603

Because Brits are the only freaking country/cultural in the world to have "high tea"/tea as a part of their traditions. That's why. I could ask the same question about certain West Afrikan, Arab and Asian cultures who have had tea rituals many centuries before the UK/west. The question you should be asking is why an american TV show host can't get her facts straight about when tea parties became popular and why the girl being interviewed didn't correctly define "afternoon tea" then couldn't pronounce grandeur? Just sayin... Tea time doesn't just belong to the UK.

high tea is pretty much supper or dinner. It’s a more substantial meal with meats and hearty foods. This lady doesn’t know English customs of tea.

Is there a tutorial on how to tea in a sophisticated way not associated with any particular culture/tradition? I want to manage to have a nice tea party that isn't too etiquette heavy so that my friends and I can dress up and enjoy each other's company without causing a tea etiquette war or offending more formal tea party goes.
    Signed,
A tea drinking casual who just wants to enjoy nice things and not start a tea war. 😅

Just have one the way you want! There's' no Universal Law that will punish you if you don't have your tea party exactly like or reference specific cultural or historical traditions. Just do your tea party the way you want to have it.

Well actually historically speaking is was not alice in wonderland sorry.
In the Victorian time tea partys were a place that women could go and talk about their political views.

This is the most uninformed and Americanized nonsense. Let’s put on a crap hat and leather biker gloves and drink tea. These people are the reason I can’t find flatware that includes a fish fork/knife or dessert spoons/forks. I’m dying inside. 🤣🤣🤣

That is the FIRST thing I thought of! Well, second or third. First off, she is dressed entirely too casual and sloppy to be teaching anyone anything about a 'proper' tea. But when she put on leather gloves at the table, she lost any dregs of credibility. I'll have to look elsewhere, and find a video that has a lot more class.
