Maybe Dust in the Wind by Kansas... allthough that includes maj7 and add9's aswell. But it's on of those songs that lends itself well to explain how to "beautify" simple chords.
If there were anyone the guitar world was waiting for as teacher it is u, Paul. We are absolutely grateful for your hardwork in putting these zen like videos with such great detail in theory. I wish if all category of chords like dim, aug, the 9ths, the 5ths, 6ths ....be explained this way, no students would ever fumble in finding or forget their chords but infact be able to replicate every chord in all shapes all over the fretboard
This comment will disappear into the ether but I stumbled onto your channel a couple weeks ago and it's unreal how much your videos have helped me already. Been playing guitar for a long time and understanding this stuff that has evaded me forever. You make it so simple and even fun to practice. Thank you so much, Paul!
Played guitar for close to 30 years. And learned by ear. Wish i had this lesson when i was young. Your lessons are great since you explain simple and with practical examples. Probably the best basic guitar lessons ive seen on youtube 👍🏻
These videos are so helpful! I’ve been playing for 12 years but never learned even the basics of music theory. Everything makes so much sense when you explain them. I’m extremely excited to watch the rest of the series. I’m assuming that if major scales go with major chords then there must be sus scales and minor scales too. If that’s the case I cannot wait to learn more about them! Thanks for the videos! Keep up the great work.
2:22 That Cat gave my Exact reaction!! 😂 "Hold on Paul, you're going too fast for me to understand!!" 😆 Thanks for the lesson btw, can't wait for part 5 👍
These videos have been really useful. I've been playing guitar by ear for years, memorizing chord shapes etc, without having any understanding of how they work. This is really useful. Thanks Paul!
A good teacher is essential in learning anything. Wish someone had explained the sus your way, way back while trying to grasp music theory. :( Thank you! you've got the gift!:)
I thank you for your take on this. You are a great teacher and i like how clear you made guitar theory to under stand. You literally the glue that is sticking all the theory i read over the years together.
My dude, you are absolutely wonderful! I am SOOOO happy I found your channel. This video in particular has helped me understand the guitar SO much better. 🙏🏼 🙏🏼 🙏🏼 🤯
I’ve been playing guitar for years and never dug into theory. I would start and quit shortly after because it becomes overwhelming. But you sir allow it to make so much sense. I’m mind blown. Thank you. I’m watching all of the videos
This is the best music education I will ever get and it makes so much sense! I am a recreational player who practices guitar every day and I am very good at naturally picking up songs fast. I always feel sad that I never went to music school so its impossible for me to ever understand people with music education. This is a good step. Please make more such videos. I really appreciate it.
buy a guitar theory book...paul's a great teacher, but a good book will put all this information in one place for you. you don't need music school unless you plan to become a teacher or performer.
Thank you so much for doing this series, and it’s very well done. I’m one of those fools that’s been playing self taught for 5 or 6 years and never “bothered” with learning any theory and it’s really started to show recently in how well (or not well actually) I’m progressing, so I’ve started learning as much as I can these last few months. It’s hard to do when channels put out a video at random discussing random aspects. So it’s very cool of you to start a series using short videos covering useful information starting from the basics going forward.
Paul this series on Music theory of yours is really good!! You are so good at teaching this and its really easy to follow. Honestly I couldn't find any other video/channel on you tube for music theory on guitar which teaches as easily, interestingly and effectively. Thanks!!
This video is simply AMAZING. I got to understand things about chords I had been unable to in the past decade! Paul Davids is the best thing that has ever happened to youtube guitar videos.
Great video Paul! Wouldn’t it be cool if you also described how an Esus4 is equivalent to Asus2, etc? Just a thought... Btw, some of your diagrams feature different fingerings than the ones you are using.
Best teaching style and page on RUclips. Ive been playing for 20+years. I know this, playing chords and exploring chords all over the neck by ear. guess it wouldnt ever hurt to study
I wish you could also recommend some songs, to practice the theory on....and....I feel the improvments in understanding guitar better because of your videos.
Also, in the instrumental part of "Summer of '69" there is this movement: Dsus2 D Dsus4 D Dsus2 D (and the same for the A chord). It's full of examples out there! :)
Paul this is amazing. I didn't think of chord structures this way. Thanks a lot. I hope you continue this series. I have learned a lot from you. You are indeed a great teacher.
Hi, Teacher Davids! I am learning a lot from you. Please don't stop sharing your knowledge because you help people who's so eager to learn but do not have someone to teach them. I am so glad that there's youtube and you are using it to help us(who willing to learn). THANK YOU, SIR! God bless
I've been playing guitar for over 10 years now, I wish I could start all over again. Those past 4 videos have made me a much better guitarist, I've done so many things wrong for so long, not understanding why they sounded that way, but just knew, now I can better explain what I'm playing and I know why it sounds the way it does. Awesome lessons Paul, keep em' coming!
I don't think I have ever felt this enlightened after watching a video. I love how you e,plain things thoroughly, but in a simple and understandable way. Amazing video
I've been watching all of your videos and I'm having a hard time coming up with things to criticize you on =/ You are, quite literally, an example and a good role model to look up to on this platform. Thank you for what you do.
I had a great guitar teacher for a few years. At no point did he ever explain this quite so perfectly as you have managed. You’ve now finally helped me understand how to navigate those patterns. Amazing channel, Paul.
Dank je wel Paul! After a year and a half of guitar playing, I needed some comprehensive theory. So far so good, though, knowing you it'll get complicated really soon.
Your method of Teaching - with occasional Diagrams, is the most effective (for me personally) that I have found on You Tube. This is awesome. I actually Understand Music Theory now. Thanks for all-you-do. oNe LovE from NYC
The reason I like you is you actually know more than most popular musicians... and you are the first person beside myself that I know who understands the 432 hz was changed. You do good work guy 👊👊
WOW!!!!! THIS IS AN AWESOME LESSON!!!! THANKS FOR MAKING IT SO EASY TO UNDERSTAND!!! I WILL START TRYING TO "THINK MORE COMPREHENSIVELY" ABOUT THE CHORDS THAT I ALREADY KNOW, AND, THE NEW ONES THAT I CAN NOW ADD, FROM THIS GREAT LESSON!!! MUCH APPRECIATED!!!
10 years playing guitar but without knowing anything about theory I thought that I would never achieve it until I saw your videos, you are changing my life man
as someone who has played guitar for half a decade, this is really helping bridge my gaps in knowledge from not knowing any theory. Thanks Paul, this is very helpful
I've been playing guitar for years and i knew the basics of theory, but never really understood "how its made". Finally someone explains it in the interesting way. Paul, im grateful. Cant wait for the video about intervals.
I like your other videos - but this is the one that got me to subscribe. Very informative! As a longtime drummer trying to be more useful to the band, I greatly appreciate your teaching. Thanks!
I watched many music theory tutorial, but this is different from other because it makes me comfortable to learn. its easy to learn when you are the one discussing. so now all the lesson that I learned, I feel its all connected! you did a great job Amigos
your understanding of how to structure and present information in a deep but understandable way is quite impressive. the information itself is fantastic too. i assume you put a lot of time into pre-production, placing yourself in the mind of the viewer. impressive, you have a great channel.
I’ve been playing for 65 years and never knew theory and thought it would be too hard. Now it’s fascinating to me and I find I’ve been accidentally doing theory all along. Just wish I’d discovered it in my teens. Keep up with the theory. It makes me young again.
Great lesson, so well explained. I get a kick of how Paul shakes the guitar no matter how mundane a note he's playing. Here's one of many examples: 5:22 You can take the player out of the performance, but you can't take the performance out of the player.
Thanks for making this! When playing guitar i just move my fingers around in the chord shape to “keep things moving”. Turns out I was making these sus2 and 4 chords without knowing it (especially the A chord with the open B string). Now hearing it discussed and the individual notes named its all coming together.
I just wanted to say that you're easily the best teacher on RUclips (and in general) that I have come across and I think that I can speak for everyone watching your channel! I was watching this video late at night in bed with no guitar in hand and you still managed to open my eyes and teach me something that I did not know. Its 2am now, and because of you, my friend, the first thing in the morning I will rock out some Sus chords as now I have an understanding of them! :D Thank you so much, Paul! Keep up the great content and you too have a nice day! :)
These videos are awesome man. I've only been playing for about 2 and a half years or so (and rather infrequently at that), and whenever I tried to get into the theory side of things I always found myself getting lost very quickly. But somehow you tell it all in a way I completely understand so, just wanted to say thank you for making these.
Seems a lot of folks would like to see some suggestions of songs featuring sus2 and sus4 chords. Please share your favorites!
David Bowie - Kooks
I Need You - The Beatles, Happy Xmas - John Lennon
Don’t Dream it’s Over - Crowded House
Maybe Dust in the Wind by Kansas... allthough that includes maj7 and add9's aswell. But it's on of those songs that lends itself well to explain how to "beautify" simple chords.
Tom Petty - free falling.
Why isn't there a Gsus Christ chord?
Pascal Lardin If he gets a Gsus Christ chord then I want a Satanic scale.
Congratulations sir, you have won RUclips.
Pascal Lardin chromatic scale aka the Kerry King scale
Josua Stangl it’s a joke you nitty.
Pascal Lardin I make that joke all the time at my church, so great
I’ve been playing for a while and slowly learning bit by bit. My head exploded with this lesson
Same brother same

I hope this series never ends. I’ve been playing guitar 6 years, barely any theory learnt. I’m learning so much every week with this

Looks like it didn't end up disappearing into the ether
As someone who taught themselves with only tabs several years ago, this theory series has been amazing! Thank you!
You haven't learned a Thing!!!
Thank you for making this simple for those of us who are still learning! I’ve tried studying this for months and it never clicked until now.
Man why are you so generous with those knowledge? I praise you with all my humbleness. Thank you man !!

It just makes me really happy to finally understand this stuff, creating chords and listening to them in another way. Thanks Paul!
These videos have been really useful. I've been playing guitar by ear for years, memorizing chord shapes etc, without having any understanding of how they work. This is really useful. Thanks Paul!

Ditto
Paul this series on Music theory of yours is really good!! You are so good at teaching this and its really easy to follow. Honestly I couldn't find any other video/channel on you tube for music theory on guitar which teaches as easily, interestingly and effectively. Thanks!!
You're the best Paul. I've improved a lot since I started tracking your videos. I put everything into practice in my church.
Paul is the only person who makes the words “theory” and “fun” work together
Even though I don't understand almost anything: I could listen you talking about music theory for hours.
If you start with episode 1, you'll understand everything! And you can hear me speak about theory for around one hour.
Erik Sievänen that is gay
Keep at it and eventually you will understand.
Trydigama, that is a comment from the 80s. Way to go, cave man.
3:20 you just explained sooo much in 1 sentence omg THANKS
For a classic major-sus2-sus4 riff check out the transition from verse into solo from Stairway to Heaven.

the beauty of this channel

Been trying to learn guitar for too many years, my mind is blown by this series, awesome
Looks at title
Takes a deep breath
*AMOGUS*
Man, I've been having a rough week but your videos always bring a smile to my face (even when I don't have time to practice). Seriously, thanks man.
Asus2 is one of my favorite chords. That voicing at the fifth fret sounds awesome but that grip! "Maybe a little hard"... for sure.
THIS MADE ME SO HAPPY
I guess I've been playing enough where I can actually understand wtf you u are talking about now...pretty coolstuff
Paul that lesson was mind blowing
Ooooooooooooh! Yeah, I totally get it now! I feel so smart right now 🤘🏻 Thank you for making me feel like a wizkid, great video's.
Looking forward to the next lesson in this series. Excellent video as always.
I don't know why but the cat showing up at 2:20 made me laugh my balls off
LOL same
Hehe same here and his reaction.😂😂
Jasper It has been two hours since your comment. I hope you put them on ice after they fell off.
his reaction was purrfect...sorry had to. love these lessons by the way
I mean, I still have my balls, but I did crack a smile.
You're really good about not saying "um" and not stumbling over your words while demonstrating. It's really nice, you're very clear.

It took me some time to catch it , but thats well said

Sarthak Atul check out "Again" by Archive or the ballad motive in the middle of Master of Puppets.
For this topic, the D chord on "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" by Queen may be a good example.
Also, in the instrumental part of "Summer of '69" there is this movement: Dsus2 D Dsus4 D Dsus2 D (and the same for the A chord).
It's full of examples out there! :)
Check out Fake plastic trees by Radiohead

awesome video! Paul never fails to make music theory simple yet interesting to learn enough and experiment with the rest.
Fret 3 on the g-string (4:50)? aaahhh you tested us :D

What about 10:32 ? :p

You probably have the best visuals for guitar lessons on RUclips. It really helps channel your teachings.

Dude thanks a lot for these videos, they're by far the most clear ones on the topic
This is the first series that music theory has clicked! Thanks Paul!!!
When the guitar is sus
Your lessons are so helpful. Thank you very much, I've seen a lot of improvements in my playing.
Sus? Amogus?
This video is great! Very concise and simple explanation, thank you. Your English has gotten much better too man
WHY ARE THERE NO AMOGUS SUS JOKES IN THE COMMENT SECTION?🤔
I like your other videos - but this is the one that got me to subscribe. Very informative! As a longtime drummer trying to be more useful to the band, I greatly appreciate your teaching. Thanks!
I haven’t come across any video that explains this so simply. Great video Paul! I’m a beginner so this helps me immensely.

Thank you so much for your work here

I’ve been playing for 65 years and never knew theory and thought it would be too hard. Now it’s fascinating to me and I find I’ve been accidentally doing theory all along. Just wish I’d discovered it in my teens. Keep up with the theory. It makes me young again.
Sussy chord
Great lesson, so well explained. I get a kick of how Paul shakes the guitar no matter how mundane a note he's playing. Here's one of many examples: 5:22 You can take the player out of the performance, but you can't take the performance out of the player.
