    At the very least, the lack of hub world in Odyssey can be excused by the fact it's supposed to be an odyssey. You're travelling around the world. Generally people don't travel around the world by leaving the US and going to France then returning to the US to go to Spain then returning to the US to go to Germany.

    I personally love the planet thing from Galaxy 2. Since the game is very linear, the limited hub world just felt more natural to me. Also I always loved the atmosphere- the fantastic music and colorful backgrounds give it such a happy vibe.

    Great analysis. I do miss the mystery and feeling of joy upon discovery that was in the hub world of 64. Still remember the feeling I had as a kid when I found a whole new world after hitting a ghost that was suspiciously larger than the rest. Such a sense of wonder.

    Odyssey definitely has a hub world; most kingdoms are hub worlds anyway. Finding checkpoints is your exploration of them, and the bonus areas are like the actual levels. The moons in the overworld are just castle secret stars.

    • @nocontext400
      @nocontext400 Год назад

      yes but no, bonus areas are bonus areas, the kingdoms are kingdoms, the kingdom it's self is one giant level, which tbf is actually much better than having a hub world cause odyssey is an open world game that you can just freely explore and basically just move on whenever you want

    One thing that really confused me when Odyssey came out was how I heard people criticizing Galaxy 2 for nerfing the hub world so much and basically scrapping the idea (fair enough), but then heard those people praising Odyssey for doing the EXACT SAME THING on STEROIDS, calling the hub world "old and outdated" and stuff. Okay, so it's old and outdated when Odyssey comes out and "it's a good thing" Odyssey got rid of it, but with Galaxy 2 it's bad that it didn't really have one? Huh?

    This is part of the reason why I miss the N64 Rareware games so much! As a kid, I loved exploring Donkey Kong's Island or seeing just how connected all the levels were in Gruntilda's Lair for Banjo Kazooie. I just bought the second Yooka-Laylee game so I'm hoping the hub world captures that magic again! This is an amazing video on the subject!!

    I think it might be because they see hub world is not needed, because they're not actaul levels, so they've been removing them or making them smaller to save time. Because they don't make a big difference in gameplay in a lot of newer mario games like oddysey.

  • @henreebee6561

    THANK YOU for bringing this up!! I’ve had this complaint ever since the original Galaxy came out (which I still love, by the way). To me, the hub world is what makes Mario games cohesive and more than just a collection of random levels (which is one of my few complaints about Odyssey). Plus, I liked seeing the change over time and opening of new areas in Peach’s castle and Delfino plaza. It really gave me a sense of progression and growth other than “here’s how many moons you’ve collected.”
    I REALLY hope they bring back a killer hub world in the next Mario game! Great video, as always!!

I get that they want to make things accessible now but that kinda kills some of that mystery of finding things out on your own.

    I wish for Super Mario Odyssey 2 to not only have a hub world akin to Super Mario 64's but also to try to make each kingdom feel less like a hub of its own but rather a level. I love Super Mario Odyssey but I only want them to make 3 changes in a sequel:
    - more filled kingdoms;
    - bigger kingdoms;
    - hub worlds.

    I love the hub worlds. I played 64 and galaxy a lot as a kid and those hub worlds feel like real places to me. But I never played sunshine as a child. I played it a little bit on 3D All stars but I couldn’t get into it. Delfino plaza was confusing to me.
    I think as an adult i have less free time so I don’t spend enough (or any) time goofing off in the hub worlds anymore. I don’t find secrets and fall in love with the place like I did as a child.
    I wonder if kids attention has anything to do with streamlining hub worlds. 64, sunshine, and even galaxy 1 were released at a time when children had less things to spend their time on. You had game console, go outside, or play physical games with friends which cant always be done. Now game consoles compete for attention with computers, phones, the internet, etc..

  • @RyanNerdyGamer

    Sidenote on Odyssey’s theme: It’s a race around the globe to prevent the Wedding From Bowser’s Kingdom (heh), so having a hub world doesn’t really fit the narrative. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    For me, it's the lack of hidden secrets that's the biggest flaw: secrets reward players that really explore every inch of the hub with hidden levels and bonus content. I love finding secrets, especially those with no explanations or very cryptic hints. Grunty's lair, delfino, peach's castle, etc. are great at holding their cards so you find them on your own. I agree that more modern games are more linear and hand holding, so secrets are ether fewer or non existent. That's why breath of the wild is still so popular despite a lack of actual dungeons as there are secrets littered everywhere in every corner so you can have fun just wandering in the vastness of hyrule like it's an actual world

  • @bigkmoviesandgames
    @bigkmoviesandgames 3 года назад +4

    7:33-7:39.....gross

    There used to be such great hub worlds like Peach's Castle, Delfino Plaza and the Observatory and then Nintendo really started to get tone it down a lot which is disappointing. Starship Mario was bland but at least it was something, and then since then the only "hub world" we've gotten is the Odyssey. Hoping Nintendo can go back to making some really unique hub worlds in the future.

    For Odyssey, I think even doing something like Galaxy 2 would have been fine. The Odyssey itself could have been bigger to let u run around and u chose a new world from the globe but then it still would have been a pointless hub so lol
    Or they could have pulled a Skyward Sword and let you freely roam the skies in the Odyssey to find cool mini levels in the sky, traveling to each world. And if you got closer to a landmass, a prompt could appear asking to land at the kingdom you're above so they could still contain each world as a "level"

    I havent cared much for any Mario Game Since SMB3 NES, Super Mario World (1&2) & Mario RPG SNES. I beat Mario 64 100% but honestly i didnt like all that much it was annoying and really wasnt fun the only thing that was neat was the Hat with Wings on it for Mario to fly but thats about it. The 🪶 in SMB3 & SMW was the best inneration of mario flying all the others suck and look weird. I played Mario Galaxy 1 and beat it but i didnt like the game much either. Nintendo just makes shitty 3D Mario Games to me and their all a disappointment. the controls and features of the new games just suck to me they dont play or move smoothly at all. Im playing SM3D World Switch and its like all ground movement is like your running on ice the whole time and when im iumping and moving through the air its the same shitty control feeling from how the characters opporated from Super Mario Bros 2. They dont regulate the depth perception very well in this game amd the shadows dont line up clear when jumping at all and im literally flinging across the board and falling off the map all the time.

      @@BeanerMoney 😂😂 what bro. Okay so super Mario world a game where you can move Mario and select levels where you can find secrets and mess with the world outside of levels is a hub world, but the exact same thing you can do in Mario 3 isn’t considered a hub world to you how does that make sense to you? It is the exact same thing
