    Great info, I just had my thumb pitch reversed another quarter, with turbo grip interchangeable thumb. Put ovals back in for fingers, much more comfortable cleaner release, and increased my ball speed. I agree it should feel completely comfortable to each individual. Thanks for the info, videos, and liked you coffee cup.

    Thanks for highlighting pressure points as a key indicator for considering adjustments, and inspiring me to go for an "offset" thumb layout. Only bowled once with it so far, but I had an easier time managing my chronic high track issues in that release has improved and with my thumb in a more natural position, weight on fingers feels more evenly/consistently distributed as the ball clears.

    Ball cleaner cap is in the paper tray.
    I've also had recent issues with getting my thumb out of a centre lined thumb hole so much that I've been unable to release it at all most times. No matter how much rosin or tape I use. This only began after I had a new PSO drill my new ball and with an offset thumb hole. It wasn't until seeing these videos that I've realised what's happening. Thanks JR!

    First personal ball in my life and the pro-shop drilled my thumb on the center line. This forced my thumb to push under my hand and caused the inside edge of my thumb to carry the ball. It took one game and the ball was back to the shop and the thumb hole was filled and re-drilled a full inch left of center with a pitch that allowed the pad of my thumb to hold the ball like it was supposed to. None the less, the pain went away and through a turkey in the first three frames.

    Thanks JR for your videos. I like your style of explaining all these Bowling stuff.
    My issue is a dark mark on the nail of my Ringfinger. Not on every shot but it’s often enough and if it comes it hurts a lot. Mostly it comes if I want to spare the right corner but also sometimes it comes if I want to bring more Rotation on the ball.
    The Proshop make a change in the pitch so now the angle is not so sharp but it doesn’t have the right effect. The next thing is that I have a issue with my first finger joints direct behind the nail of my Ringfinger. Can you give me a tip so I can tell my proshoper have to look respectively what he can change to my layout?

  • @RGJ109
    @RGJ109 5 лет назад +2

    Thanks, JR. Your video explains why I need to change the thumb pitch on my ball. I don’t get callouses, but the forward pitch must be the reason it feels hard to hold the ball without squeezing my thumb. When I get warmed up and try to put more spin on the ball, my thumb hangs up and the ball goes way left of target. (I’m right-handed)
    This is my first custom-fit ball, so I don’t have to relearn anything if I change the pitch. Also, it’s hard to get my palm on the ball. Off-setting my thumb hole would stretch my ring finger more, but a friend says that finger should be relaxed to come out last...giving the ball more spin. Does that make sense?
    Thanks again for your videos. And I like your coffee mug, too.

    I like the coffee cup. Cool that its in video.
    Offset grip equals span change. Any thumb hole I shift laterally leftward or right for lefties of that current centerline, to create thumb offset simply changes the span by raising the ring finger. I like the term finger offset. Precise span coupled with precise pitching. And correct hole sizes to the 1/64 for the thumb on the large side. Tape is a must. Unless climate dictates otherwise. Oval is great if u can replicate it to the degree. But personally I like round and use tape to create shape. I think most bowlers have a natural tendency to squeeze a little so using slightly more forward pitches with a comfortable thumb hole with tape helps bridge that gap of over under thumb leverage.
    Only my personal thoughts on what has helped me. Nonetheless nothing more fun than trying different stuff. The perfect grip does not exist. But a better one seems to always be around the corner. :-):-):-)

    Wouldn't your "offset" be created if you use your measurements between thumb and index finger and thumb and ring finger then use your 0 side pitch and maybe 0 or 1/8 forward? I actually went to 0 forward/reverse and 1/8" right or under the palm after drilling many thumb holes to resolve the issue you discuss on the thumb dragging as you release it. Now I struggle a bit with dropping the ball so thinking of going to a bit of forward pitch. Your thoughts?

    I think the real issue here is a lack of data. Certainly there will be no universal correct fit. However, if the data were available you could come up with a chart, based on hand size and shape, of what generally works for, say, 20 basic hand templates. I have a large hand and disjointed thumb, and while my current fit seems sorta correct it is also the case that if I throw it even slightly wrong, I get searing pain in my thumb tendons. So there’s gotta be some way to say “with this hand shape/size, thumb angle typically works best in this particular fashion”.

  • @Skeer0
    @Skeer0 2 года назад

    Great info. I just had a ball drilled and it's definitely not right. Span too long and thumb hole too big. I really have to claw grip it to keep it on my hand and it causes my thumb skin to tear on the side and the tendons in my hand/arm are pretty sore after bowling 6 games. Going to a different PSO for a second opinion since the first one didn't even mention how to hold/grip the ball or how the thumb should be snug.

    Since the early 90s I've had an "offset thumb". I've only seen it as the span of my ring finger being about an 1/8th longer.
    I've recently begun drilling my own. I really have to be careful about my span. I have one ball that is drilled within a 1/16th of another, just that much longer, and my thumb is hanging occasionally on the inside. I'm wondering if it's reasonable to maybe increase the left pitch a little when the span is a bit longer. I do prefer my span on the long side. Otherwise I feel like I have to squeeze the ball.

    Two points on interest for my fitting....for years I had issues of hanging up in the ball, every driller that promised to resolve this, did the same thing and opened up the thumb making it worse because then I had to squeeze the ball. Found a guy that took a pocket knife and beveled the back of the thumb, immediately solved the problem. Secondly discovered Center Line Transfer, not a game changer but increased comfortably. Jus sayin........

      Hey, I feel like I made a mistake with my first ball. I thought I'd get it drilled by a PSO then everything should be fine. PSO drilled it, thumb hung up/ ad some suction. I told him that he immediatly opened up the hole. Now its so big that i can't hold on to it without squeezing...
      Also the thumb is kinda pitched inwards, like towards the palm, is this normal??? Oh and he made the fingertip inserts bigger than what my fingers actually are, incase there is swelling...
      I just wanted a well fitting ball... :(

    I'm obviously not the first, but, I found this video about six weeks ago. Using this information, I discovered that my grip was off by about 1/8" (to long) in addition to having some reverse pitch in the fingers that had the finger nails digging into the front/top of the grips. Someone in my league told me about a local guy who worked out of his garage while having a pro shop elsewhere. Bottom line - grip shortened up, two weeks with the new grip span, 749 & 653!

    I was in league tonight, using inserts, my index finger insert is cracked a little, and my ball has a hairline crack above that insert. The last shot of my second game, the weight of the ball was directly on that finger, pain went down my entire finger. Was forced to put myself on blind for my 3rd game of the series. Proper fitment is crucial with any ball. More than likely will have to plug my ball, have it redrilled, with new inserts to address this issue. Like the words on that coffee cup btw!!!

    How does a person know when a ball is too heavy verses a grip issue. I’m just getting back into bowling and have this notion that you need a #15 or #16 lbs ball. I just purchased a 15 lbs ball when my previous ball that I used for years was a 14. A pro shop once told me that for increased scoring I would need go with heavier ball. Now, I’ve bowled about 3 times with the new ball and it just feels heavy. My age is 55 in fairly good condition and strength. I was previously a league bowler years ago with a 190 avg. thoughts ??

    Fitting is a weird thing. Years ago when I started drilling I took every used ball I could get my hands on plugged redrilled all sorts of different ways. In some aspects I am very unconventional. You say you want that thumb slug tight that's a big no no for me I'll drill it for a customer like that if that's how they chose but I'd much rather myself personally drill the hole bigger by about a 64th or a 32nd and tape up I say that because I bowled with a ball for quite some time with a tight fit. And bowled a big tournament where my fucking thumb actually didnt come out of the ball. Had for months before throwing this ball. But never again will I throw a ball with a tight fit slug. Oversize tape to proper fit and I over exaggerate the reverse so when I'm gripping the ball I know I'm coming out clean ever time no matter what

    I don't know what I need to do but I am almost afraid to bowl anymore. I have a permanent bruise on my thumbnail and every time I bowl it gets worse and hurts worse I have made the hole bigger but at this point I am unsure what I can do to stop this. Any suggestions!! I used to bowl all the time but since I've went to a fingertip bowling ball I don't enjoy as much and is quite painful. The person that drilled the holes said it is just me. and nothing is wrong with the ball.

      Find a better proshop. It’s definitely a fit thing that’s making you squeeze

      @@Tenpindoctors there are no other pro shops in my area. And not many people know much about bowling.

      @@Tenpindoctors that is the only pro shop and that is in a different town from where I live. Limited around this area.

      @@Tenpindoctors i went to a bowling alley in another town a couple months ago and the owner was there, i asked him and he is the one that made the hole a little bigger, i think it may have helped a little but it still hits back of my nail and hurts.. May 12th we are in a mom son tournament (son is 12 years old). Maybe I should use my mother's old ancient regular standard ball? I don't know so frustrating because I really love bowling and this is my son's first year. He really likes it too.
