I feel like no grips is fine with a conventional drilling, but you really want grips for fingertip drilling for the feel and comfort. I'm not convinced that either one gives you any more power or finesse. I see it as a personal preference, but I have found that the rubber of the grips is a nicer feel than the outer core material of the ball.
Obviously it feels better. But I've heard from better bowlers than myself that don't use grips that it helps them not grab it at the bottom. I feel as thought it's all a matter of preference.
Yeah its mostly personal preference on how it feels. I switched to No grips several years ago and made it a dedicated decision. It definitely felt wrong for awhile at first but once I got used to it, I am not sure I would ever go back to grips. Rev rates are really about the same overall, but I feel more control with no grips because the finger holes are ALWAYS the same, they don't wear out, and, when I do something wrong, I feel it more. It's a lot easier to notice when you start gripping too hard because the fingers will start burning more, but grips don't allow you the feel to notice that because they seem to be more comfortable no matter what you do with your hand. The only downside I have with no grips is that my middle and ring fingers are way more calloused than they used to be, but that doesn't really matter to me.
I quit using finger inserts probably 20 years ago. I also don't use anything in my thumb either but I've also been wrenching on cars my whole life so my hands are really calloused and beat to crap LOL
@@dubweezyI can confirm that. Plus unlike inserts that give you a slight cushion if you get out of the ball wrong without inserts you feel immediately and know what you did wrong
Packy, I'm a conventional 1 handed no thumb bowler. I tried grips early on in the year, and i lost a lot of control, my average went down by 20 pins, and instead of my balls having a great arc on them, every shot was a hockey stick motion. Took the grips out, went back to conventional drilling, and my average shot back up around 170-180. My rev rate last i checked was around the 370 mark, however that could have gone up or down lately (I haven't rechecked in about a year)
I like the feel of no grips. When I used grips, every ball in my bag had a different level of wear on the grips, so each ball felt different when I would switch back and forth. I also think my rev rate is a little higher without grips.
There's two simple ways to fix the issue with uneven wear on the grips between your different balls. Either always throw the same amount of shots with each ball or replace the grips after every use.
I've used both.... as I've gotten older I prefer with grips. I personally use the humps. When I was younger and played the grain with 16# no inserts. My rev rate is 450 one hander here. Love the videos
Personally as a two hander, no grips feel way better. When I used grips, they would cut my fingers, and I would "hit up" on the ball too much at the bottom. Plus, grips are getting expensive, so replacing tape is cheaper than getting grips when fingers swell or shrink.
I like grips because I feel like they give you more flexibility with your fingers. I typically like my grips tight, almost to the point where my finger can barely fit in them. That being said, there are times where I would put my fingers in deeper. With no grips I feel like I wouldn’t be able to do that, not to mention it feel weird.
I'm a two hander with no grips and I prefer no grips. I never have to worry about the ball sticking to my hand when I dig, but I bevel the holes quite a bit and it's much more comfortable. It makes a world of difference, plus the sandpapery feel of the conventional grips goes away fairly quickly after some use
I was a one hander from the start but then right after nationals this year. I turned to two hand bowling right after to try it and i like it way more then one handed I just need to learn how to control it better
Ive always used no grips, i tried a ball earlier this year with grips and felt like i was hanging up and couldnt get out of the ball clean, i think maybe a change to my pitches would help if i try again next time? 230+ average 1 hand lefty, 400ish rev rate
I'm a one hander with grips, 470-490 on average at around 17-18 mph measured. Sometimes I get to 500-510 if I'm really opening the lane up and need the ball to finish hard. Had my span and thumb changed recently for the first time in years, so getting used to that too. BW 2.0 Hybrid my current favorite in my bag. My friend is one handed no thumb with grips, 530-550 on average at 19-20 mph. Lots of power. His favorite ball currently is the Hazmat.
Biggest issue I had with no grips when I first went fingertip back in the 1980s was finger swelling, so you had to drill them a touch big and use tape like you do with a thumb hole. Once I went to grips it gave me more room for swelling because the grip would compress and I could still get my fingers in the ball even though they were tighter.
I'm a one hander at around 400 rpm. I can lower it, but that's pretty much my max. I can maybe get 10 more revs if I really lift, but that changes my everything, so I try not to. Haha.
I typically go no grips. I feel like you can really feel the ball come off your fingers better. I'm typically around 470 can get as low at 400 and as high as 530 . Two hander. I might experiment with vacu grip set-up. I do know if your not used to no grips it rips up your fingers till you build up some calluses.
I've thrown with no grips, then grips (with the lifter), and now throw the same grips, but have them put in as Vacu-grips for when my fingers swell up when bowling.
I’m a righty one-handed bowler who does NOT use grips and has a 550 average rev rate. I had grips when I started but I liked semi-fingertip which shredded my middle finger really deep and both my middle and ring fingers would bleed after even 7-8 frames and true finger tip was not comfortable/inconsistent, I regularly dropped the ball or dumped it all over the lane. My rev rate with grips and a little different release/style was 575 average but I ultimately have only been getting more consistent and better after ditching grips.
Once I discovered grips never went back and saved my fingertips I'm two handed right handed. Normal rev rate I'd say 525 ish when my back is sore. If I'm feeling good, I have a better follow through I can easily pull 575 and I imagine 600 if I rip it
One handed, I use my thumb, no grips, and my rev rate is around 450-475. Honestly I love the feeling of no grips. I also tape my fingers with the gray storm grip tape because the feel is amazing.
I don’t have grips in my spare ball(two hander)but that’s to make sure I release it softer and don’t overbook at corner pins, but the few times I use it on very dry lanes and ripped on it my first hurt. I always have used grips in my other balls, and the vac grips seem to be my most comfortable and controllable without grabbing it. Have never had my rev rate tested but looking and watching your videos you seem to have an extra mph on me maybe(I think the center I’m at as crappy sensors)it shows I average between 15.5 and 16, but I can get up to 18 it’s just less accuracy but my rev rate seems to be high af
Interesting comparison. I've always wondered about this. I tried without grips for a sort time. I agree with you. It hurt a bit. Pitches had to be absolutely perfect too. Just no give.
I'm a one hander but only bowl with two fingers, no thumb. I have never tried grips but I can say that I enjoy my no grip ball and I feel like I have all the control in the world without grips. I average around 160 to 180 typically. I would be really curious about my rev rate because I throw my strike ball pretty hard but my left side spares I'm about half my speed.
my rev rate is 500+ 2 handed with grips. ive develop a ton more power this year bowling and its making me play straighter on all patterns yet having more success than ever
Can you redrill bigger and install grips if it is already drilled? I would think the center point of the hole would be the same and reaming out the hole a little bigger to accommodate the grips would be no problem
In my prime I bowled A LOT! I learned to bowl not using grips, then changed to using grips. There was no difference in performance at all. What did change was the effect on my fingers. Without grips the calluses on my finger were brown from the constant friction. With grips I don’t get the finger burn. Caveat, I used the standard flat grips, not the angled grips designed to increase revs. Do they still make those.
My rev rate is about 440 as a 2 hander rn, but my ball speed is also a touch lower at 18 or so off my hand. Trying to get up to that 19-20mph at 500 rpm!
2 handed righty, about 360 rev rate at 17/18 off the hand. For reference my 2 handed PAP is 4.5 over and 2 up. 1 handed i'm about a measly like 200 rev rate at like 21 off the hand. Pap is 5 1/16 over and 3/8 up.
Packy... One thing that could help you reach 600 is to bend your elbow in your backswing and cradle the ball more. When you extend for your release at the bottom of the swing it will accentuate the yo-yo motion and should increase your revs a bit (although probably sacrifice your accuracy LOL). Cool video and great info! Power Lift grips for the win!!!
So, I always bowled 1 finger and decided last week to get this clearance 16# ball drilled with 2. I hate inserts so I went "raw" as he calls it. I actually did very well with this ball but the top of my forearm is absolutely KILLING me. I am not sure if this is from making the finger change or ripping on an extra pound. I will say this, I could tell I was pushing more revs than bowling 1 finger. My rev rate is about 460 with 1 finger, 2-handed.
Years ago had a guy explained that with no grips he felt it when he would release wrong. Helped him train himself to have a cleaner release. But I think it's just preference
i like the feel of grips, no grips hurt my finger more, also idk if its me but when i pop sound wiht grips, it feels better than popsounding wihotu grips so grips are better for me it may also be casue i started bowling wiht grips in the ball already
I use no grips because I bowl one handed no thumb. So I can dig into the ball and get a better feel. When I had grips I couldn't hold the ball as well. I never noticed a big decrease in revs.
Where can we find SPECTO in Nor Cal? Is Specto a rare unicorn on the West Coast? Regarding grips, I've gone back and forth with no grips and grips. I feel like I have more tricks with grips, like I can do more nuanced things.
At last measure this one handed lefty sat at 495 rpm average. My Helios has grips, my Venom Shock does not.. also side note when i measured my rev rate i used the venom.. so 495 without grips.. its all about feel, and for me as long as my thumb hole feels the same every shot my fingers dont matter as much.. my Helios grips (turbo) dont feel the same in late blocks as they do early, so when i had the VS drilled i went back to no grips . Only thunb slug.. and that is an oval..
.02 on grips vs. no grips… tournament bag has about 8 balls. League, pretty much use the same 2 always. They wear out. So going from tight to loose or loose to tight sucks. No grips lets me tape similar to my thumb. Balls never feel identical unless you constantly change the grips in the balls you’re using. I also learned I like the sharper feel so I don’t grab. Grips come with an ongoing expense, albeit minimal. With all that said, it really does come to person preference.
I am a two handed righty and was struggling with my grips. A really good bowler recommended i replace my grips. I did and it still felt wrong. He then recommended ditch the grips and that quickly became the only ball I would throw. If I had to switch to another it made me angry.
i feel personally that i can’t dig without the grips, even with my low rev rate (250-275 range, haven’t officially checked but based on some quick math from some videos) i feel it makes a difference in how i can hit the ball. (1 handed righty). i know one of my friends (2 handed about 600 rpm) who also uses grips AND digs to the second knuckle also prefers the feel of the grips
It would be interesting to have Keven do this exact same video and see how his rev rate changes and what his perspective is as one who doesn't use grips.
Just watched the video and curious... When any of you made the switch from grios to no grips, did you also have to adjust your pitches forward since having no grips allows the ball to come off smoother? Curious to know...
My Rev Thumb in the ball . 350 ish.My revs 2 fingered are 525 average. Im working hard to get my thumb in revs up as I throw around 16 to 17 miles an hour .
I'm one handed, never had the opportunity to have my Rev rate tallied. I know it's high, my issue is my Rev Rate is high but my speed is slow. I can not generate any Speed I guess my age cought up to me lol
Hey Packy! I am a right handed two handed, high game 200, average 139 lol. Been bowling for 3 almost 4 years. I look up to all PBA pros! I have no idea what my rev rate is. I use a 15lb storm phase 2 as my strike ball and a 15lb storm mix as my spare
Lots of videos on how to do it yourself. Take masking tape center palm to pap. Get a camera that you can get good video quality. Count how many times that tame makes full rotation from release to pin deck. Then look up the speed/rev formula sheet. It will tell you what you want to know.
Rev rate? Under 200 with my thumb in. Over 400 with my thumb out!! I have a couple balls with no grips (conventional) and I am just going in to get them drilled out and grips put in.
No grips only feel good when they are done by a craftsmen driller how knows how to bevel by hand. I was able to be a no gripper for years, then I switched drillers and I felt how you felt right there like a brick rather than a pillow feel. I felt like I had more finesse with no grips, now I’m use to grips after 10 years of grips.
I’m a finger tip, one hand no thumb and no grip person and I only use no grip because I bowl so much I don’t want to pay to change my grips every two months or so
Came back to bowling in the 22-23 bowling league season after a 7 year break. I put tape on my ball and did the method of timing ball travel down lane and counted revolutions using video as well as using Specto at my house league center. small variance (I cannot remember which one read high or low) but only about 10-20 RPM difference (same session). This year I feel much more smooth at the bottom of my swing and my timing has come back. I have not put my current form through the same measure, only feel. Anywho, last year, came in around 510RPM +/- 30. I would love to see my average now adays and also see the standard deviation in RPM. One-Hander here. Additional information. I used regular oval grips (no power lifts or anything) I throw an average of 17mph (according to the scanners at my house) but I've heard that those can report slower numbers based on how steep and angle your ball is moving down lane because the sensors used to measure yours balls speed are positioned down lane after your balls break point meaning it is measuring your balls travel at an angle.
Sorry Packy, but no grips for me. So I have used both until the late 90's, and thats when i switched to no grips, and the feeling is way better for me. Now really this is all personal preference. Some likes no grips, some likes it with grips. It all depends on what you're looking for as well as feel.
$10k for a Specto machine? I will take 2 please... lol 😂 - the last time my rev rate was "measured", it was 350, but that was like 10 years ago. I am 1 handed lefty. Grips is my preference, but no grips would be okay as long as it fits, but my finger pads would get ripped up
I use grips otherwise I squeeze too much. I measured my rev rate with a 14 lb black widow bite at 480 with a soft hand. 450 with my 15 lb purple hammer soft hand. I bet the spy and my low rg stuff and short pin stuff are probably north of 550. Thumb in the ball. I lose revs taking my thumb out haha.
I don't reliably know my Rev rate. I've tried to calculate it from recording videos and counting the revolutions but that may or may not be accurate. It looks like mine may be about 300 and I'm a one hander
Noob question here as I have only bowled a few times for fun. Do grips allow you keep the ball with your hands without "pinching" the ball when your fingers are inside the holes? I heard you shouldn't really be "gripping" the ball at all..... Please correct me if I'm wrong
Is there a difference with the type of grip. Like you have the one where is cut in half and the other that isn’t (don’t know what they are called specifically but the other one is circle ish)
I feel like no grips is fine with a conventional drilling, but you really want grips for fingertip drilling for the feel and comfort. I'm not convinced that either one gives you any more power or finesse. I am a 2 hander and use no grips myself. I personally like no grips and my rev rate is about 450 ish.
I am a two handed righty and was struggling with my grips. A really good bowler recommended i replace my grips. I did and it still felt wrong. He then recommended ditch the grips and that quickly became the only ball I would throw. If I had to switch to another it made me angry.
I have been no grips as a two hander since I was playing with the triangle layout. I just haven't felt like buying grips as they wear out so fast
I believe About 350 to 450. Sometimes less than 300 if it’s dry.
i feel personally that i can’t dig without the grips, even with my low rev rate (250-275 range, haven’t officially checked but based on some quick math from some videos) i feel it makes a difference in how i can hit the ball.
Unfortunately i don’t know my rev rate. I would guess 250-300 one handed.
I use no grips and fingers right off the press sharp 2 handed at 306 rev rate with 0 tilt and 30 rotation
Hey Packy! I am a right handed two handed, high game 200, average 139 lol. Been bowling for 3 almost 4 years. I look up to all PBA pros! I have no idea what my rev rate is. I use a 15lb storm phase 2 as my strike ball and a 15lb storm mix as my spare
I use grips for better feel. I’m a 2-hander and I don’t know my rev rate but I’m guessing it’s about 500 but I don’t know how to calculate it.
Lots of videos on how to do it yourself. Take masking tape center palm to pap. Get a camera that you can get good video quality. Count how many times that tame makes full rotation from release to pin deck. Then look up the speed/rev formula sheet. It will tell you what you want to know.
I'd say i roll about a 250-300 rpms as a one hander
I really love it when I haven't cut my finger nails to nearly gone and they catch on the grips lmao
They don’t rly measure rpm on Portuguese bowling events :(
I have no official rev rate measurements, but did some calculations with the help of slowmo shots and they averaged around 300.
Two Handed: 530 Revs, 18.8mph Release Speed
Rev rate?
Under 200 with my thumb in.
Over 400 with my thumb out!!
I have a couple balls with no grips (conventional) and I am just going in to get them drilled out and grips put in.
I'm 2 handed with about 550 to about 580 revs but I like having grips because I have more control, with no grips I feel like I'm less consistent.
Are you using standard grips or vacuum grips? Ovals or lifts?
Vacuum oval, you can see them clearly right at the start of the video.
Bowled all through Juniors and Youth fingertip with no grips. Tips of my fingers ended up with dark brown callouses on them from the friction.
I’m a finger tip, one hand no thumb and no grip person and I only use no grip because I bowl so much I don’t want to pay to change my grips every two months or so
I’m a two hander over here. My average rev rate is 450 rpm. But my highest was 506.
Vinyl or urethane in the finger hole? Would think at least might help with consistency and not hurt as much.
$10k for a Specto machine? I will take 2 please... lol 😂 - the last time my rev rate was "measured", it was 350, but that was like 10 years ago. I am 1 handed lefty. Grips is my preference, but no grips would be okay as long as it fits, but my finger pads would get ripped up
I have no idea what my is. I don't know how to measure it. Do you have any idea how without any machine or is there a app on a phone that does it?
I use grips otherwise I squeeze too much.
I measured my rev rate with a 14 lb black widow bite at 480 with a soft hand. 450 with my 15 lb purple hammer soft hand. I bet the spy and my low rg stuff and short pin stuff are probably north of 550.
Thumb in the ball. I lose revs taking my thumb out haha.
Will you be bowling on the tour in Pa at the Steel City bowl And Brew? Im hoping to be there just awaiting dates and for tickets to be realesed
Traditional one hander, 480- 500 rpm on an average shot. I throw the ball around 18 mph.
Packy what’s the difference between lifted grips and oval grip?!?
I don't reliably know my Rev rate. I've tried to calculate it from recording videos and counting the revolutions but that may or may not be accurate.
It looks like mine may be about 300 and I'm a one hander
Cool video talk tech bowling bowling packy interchangeable thumb inserts
How can you really test grips when you bowl with 2 hands and can stay under regardless?
Noob question here as I have only bowled a few times for fun. Do grips allow you keep the ball with your hands without "pinching" the ball when your fingers are inside the holes? I heard you shouldn't really be "gripping" the ball at all..... Please correct me if I'm wrong
Do I need to fill out the form for every day?
I'm one handed and have 485 -510 Rev rate.
Do we have to sign in for every giveaway separate or sign in once?
Is there a difference with the type of grip. Like you have the one where is cut in half and the other that isn’t (don’t know what they are called specifically but the other one is circle ish)
I use grips for strike ball and no grips for spares for the feel
Do u have to do the link every day or just once
i dont use grips. haven't used em ever and i've been bowling for 13 years. i just dont feel like grips allow me to get a good grip of the ball.
They are called grips for a reason. 😂
No idea of My rev rate because the alley hasn't updated to anything like spectro because we are still living in the 80's.
Have you tried using vacuum grip ?
I’ll find out Friday! Going to do a SPECTO session!
