Product junkie, over manipulation, no manipulation, over trimming….lol. Everything the natural hair community told me to do had me doing too much to my hair or made me scared to touch it. Grease has been my saving grace. I shampoo, condition and deep condition about once a month. I keep my hair in flat twist or braids..remoisturizing twice a week. Once it close to wash day. My hair is so stretched and slick… I throw it up in a bun. I only trim when I feel my ends getting rough. I use kuza oil lotion or Aussie moist leave in then seal with kuza grease or palmers olive oil gel therapy grease. I’ve been stuck at mid back for a year….I’m glad to say making these changes I’m reaching waist length. Finger detangling has also helped with length retention.

I will be 58 next month and my hair hasn't grown this much since I was a teenager. I use my daughter's products and one day I decided to make my own products. I'm not trying to advertise but we all can make our own hair products. Our hair needs to be moisturized. I don't wash my hair as much and NO it doesn't smell bad. We have to know our hair. Another thing, some ppl don’t like their real hair texture so when they use a certain product and it doesn’t make their hair look like a different hair type they just go and buy a new one instead of accepting their hair for what it is and doing styles that work for their hair. Or they hate it while it’s short and shrunken so instead of waiting for it to grow they blow it out constantly and then develop heat damage which they refuse to cut off 🤦🏾‍♀️

I've been natural for close to 5 years and my hair is about 10-12 inches in length. I'm very guilty of most of the topics you mentioned. I have so much hair products that I purchased a book shelf to store them. When it comes to over manipulation, I'm definitely guilty - I would literally take my twist out mid week to re-moisturize, or re-do, or even to do a different hairstyle (I realized that I become bored very easily with hairstyles). In 2022, I'm committed to getting rid of half of those products, and incorporating more long lasting hairstyles so as to reduce the amount of times I touch my hair.

The thing that stunted my hair growth was leaving my hair out all the time. Since I was like 14-15 bc I'd started to wear my hair out in twist outs and braid outs I got addicted to it/loved it so much that I used to do it all the time then along with that leave my hair like that to go to sleep without remoisturising or reprotective styling and so slowly my hair broke off, more and more. Bc it was constantly always so dry from being out all the time so that's a tip for everyone if your hair is suffering with dryness consider whether you're wearing it out too much and whether if you do you're remoisturising after.
I don't so that anymore and wear my hair out once in a blue moon and it's flourished so much since then
A big example of your hairs not not growing it's just breaking off

So thank you so so much.

I’m “newly natural” (almost two years in) but I still haven’t found products that give me the results that I want and need. I’d been taking it slow trying things out until this Black Friday when I finally had the funds to try many brands out. I’ve definitely fallen into the product junkie hole but I also really want to find what works for me so that I can finally chill with moisturized and happy hair.
I definitely understand where you’re going though about the product junkies thing. I’ve seen influencers that bought 5 of the same product having never tried it before just in case they do end up liking it. I’ve never understood it. Also buying things that you don’t really need or use often. Like buying rinse out conditioners when they’ve never been part of your routine. I’ve made it a point to be selective even though I’m getting a lot just to avoid this.

I'm not African American but listening to you and watching how much work you put on your hair only makes me appreciate it. I see African American women with different hair styles on their natural hair but I never understood how long it actually takes to fix it. My cousin has course hair and she takes hours as well. She won't wash it often since it takes a lot of time to work with. I have fine curly/wavy hair. I have experienced hate from African American women and I didn't understand why. I know hair is a big deal to the culture. I wasn't raised or taught how to take care of my hair. I always think to myself, why are you hating or jealous? You don't wake up in the morning with me to see what my hair looks like or the struggle I have to try to add volume to it so it looks like I actually have hair lol. I've learned to braid my hair which has helped me add volume to it. When I walk around with my hair braided I notice the attention I recieve which isn't always positive. But I always think to myself, God created the different texture hairs but we aren't taught how to take are if it. We are ALL beautiful but its up to us on the type of attitude we choose to take. Much love ♡♡♡

      Regardless all hair is beautiful.
I have thick curly hair and I NEVER was jealous of anyone hair. I am glad my hair is thick and healthy. People need to be more comfortable in there own skin.
Love the way God made you with his own hands. He made no mistakes with your hair texture or who you are as a person.

For me, I don't delay washing my hair because it takes a lot of time to work with it. I wash it when it needs it. My hair tends to need washing every 3 weeks, so that's when it gets done. It isn't 3 weeks because it takes so long to do and I'm avoiding work though. In between washes, I remoisturize weekly (contrary to the video, that works for me, my hair needs it lol), which takes hours. And you just saw Natural Academia spend how many hours braiding her hair. We spend a lotta time in hair. Not washing daily isn't because it's a lot of work. Often it's because it's manipulation that isn't needed and it is a stripping, stressful process to the hair, so it's done when needed.
Everyone washes their hair *when they need it*. Do you wash yours hourly? Of course not. Would I say you don't wash yours hourly because it's too much work, or because that isn't needed? I don't mean to be harsh. But I would like people to be considerate of what standards they apply to others.
Also, I'm sure no malice was intended, but I don't "fix" my hair. There's nothing wrong with it. 👍🏿 😊

This is my theory for natural hair about trimming.
Stylist straighten our hair to get a similar fine texture for length reasons which is okay.
But, when they are reviewing our ends they are going off of a straight hair texture.
Our hair doesn’t look the same so our ends aren’t going to look the same.
My theory is we should consider a different method to go off of.
We shouldn’t have so much cutting done because they are going off of a straight texture method.
I hope how I’m writing this it’s making sense.
🤷🏽‍♀️ I asked my ancestors for guidance and this came in my head.
Trimming/ a light dusting is needed…But, I don’t think as frequently and I don’t think that much should be taken off especially if you are taking care of your hair.
    Great video ❤️.

You should trim your hair the way you wear it. If you wear a lot of blow outs from your hair that way. If you wear a lot of wash and gos trim it that way. The way you cut your hair curly is very different from how you cut it straight. But with that being said it doesn’t mean we don’t need to trim our hair as much. Some who over manipulate their hair need there curls cut more than someone who doesn’t

🙌🏽Love this video! In my first few years of going natural I saw almost no growth. At that time, I was using every product known to man including buying everybody's useless, overpriced drops and oils.🙄 In the last 2 years, the pandemic and working from home has resulted in my doing protective styles and literally keeping my hands out my head. During this period, my hair has grown down my back and it's the longest it has ever been. I have washed it less, manipulated it less, cut it less, and put very little heat on it. I am also working down my huge stash of unnecessary hair products (gave most away). Just to think... at one point, I even considered putting groceries in my head (mayo, eggs, yogurt, aloe, etc etc). Luckily I didn't go that far.😳 I choose to eat the groceries and let nature take care of my hair.

I'm not gonna lie, I've only recently became something like a product junkie despite being natural all my life and always sticking to the same product; only changing when I think a certain product doesn't work on my hair anymore.
I don't over manipulate -- I touch it when it needs be styled and I always opt for products that are best for my hair health. However, since I got a job (I'm a teen lol) and and my hair has gotten closer to my goal length, I just been so interested in buying more stuff ad having a collection of hair products! I wouldn't call myself a junkie -- I don't buy new hair products just because they're trending or for the sake of it, but I can understand why people are fr!

Sometimes we make the mistake of focusing on length so much that we don’t pay attention to the true needs of our hair! I did a big chop recently to get rid of all my straight trained hair after months of my mom telling me not to and to just let it grow out for the length and I regret nth. If being a product junkie is becoming a financial issue for you, be encouraged to return them! I don’t have the kind of hair that responds well to just any ole bottle of something or no product at all, so I have to try things out until I find something that works. This, of course, adds up on my pockets. I don’t limit myself on how many new products I can try in a given timeframe, but I do have a two-try rule with myself-if I try a new product and it’s horrible, I have to return it within the week; if the product is ‘meh’, I give myself one more chance to try it, but the second try must be on the very next wash day. If it still sucks on the second try, I must return it within the week. I know some people feel embarrassed to return anything, but I was raised by my country grandma who would return a $0.89 bottle of TABLE SALT if she didn’t like it😆 I’m not that bad, especially not with small businesses, but I’m not shy about confirming a retailer’s return policy upfront and holding them to their word. In the words of Cookie Lion, “I gotta put me first!”
