As someone who played this game when it came out, I can say that not knowing the backstory of the Van der Linde gang had its own intrigue. There was a certain sense of discovery as the story unfolded. It was interesting knowing only little bits and pieces of John's past that got revealed over time. At the point you're at now, Bill being the only other gang member you know (and not knowing much about him) made the whole thing seem like a mystery which was really interesting.

I think one of my favorite things about this series is the fact that some played the original first, and some played RDR2 first, but no matter which order you played it, it's still such a seamless story. Easter eggs, hints, familiarities. I remember when I played RDR2 for the first time and Arthur and Javier go looking for John in the mountains. And when Arthur screams "Marston!" and you get that confirmation that it's THE John, and you finally see John and how he got the trademark scar on his face...within the first few minutes I was screaming. And same goes for if you played RDR2 first and then go to RDR1. Within the first few minutes you see familiar towns, familiar faces, and you have this whole background knowledge right away that is so immersive. It's just so easy to jump back into this world🤩

    • @DJSAM3TUN3
      @DJSAM3TUN3 2 месяца назад +1

I think I was actually screaming during the bounty hunting mission with Sadie in the epilogue when I had to survey Armadillo in the binoculars. I did NOT expect the entirety of New Austin to be in RDR2, so just seeing Armadillo and realizing that I can literally go there was mind blowing. Especially since my Xbox 360 on which I originally played the first game has been broken for years now and I had no opportunity to go back to that world until I played RDR 2

Even though RDR1 is set over 10 years after RDR2 it does have a more Spaghetti *western* feel to it compared to RDR2. From the main setting being the State of New Austin (Regions based on Arizona, New Mexico, and western Texas) to the really fun over the top ragdoll animations that go for a more stylised look and feel over the more heavily and realistic RDR2 reactions. The music also gives off a more 1960s/1970s Spaghetti Western feel. The music may not as diverse as RDR2 it does have a unique sound that really fits the game.
RDR2 does have a wider range of locations as it's set across Five States each with their own look, feel, music, and overall tone but RDR1 does feature returning locations such as New Austin the location you unlock once you finish the main story of RDR2 and the Tall Trees and Great Plains regions of West Elizabeth, Great Plains being where Blackwater and John's homestead were located. Nuevo Paraíso is a new location for you just located to the south of New Austin so that's going to be fun.
If you want to know where the new map featured in RDR2 starts from just look at Upper Montana River to the east of Blackwater. Beyond this river is where RDR2 is set and the terrain does line up pretty well. You can even see where Lemoyne should be located if you look across the Lake from Blackwater so it's really cool how much thought went into creating the area beyond the map.
New Austin - Based on Arizona, New Mexico, West Texas
West Elizabeth - Eastern Texas, Oklahoma etc. (Only Great Plains and Tall Trees are in the game, Big Valley where Strawberry is located was introduced in RDR2)

Games from the 2010s hold up extremally well it's really only the resolution that makes alot of them look old. Most games ran at 720p even if you picked 1080p it would just upscale 720p to 1080p you didn't actually play on native 1080p. Even GTA V (2013) ran at a native 720p on Xbox 360/PS3 so it wasn't until the next gen version released that we got to play the game at 1080p and what an improvement it was in comparison.
I've been playing through GTA IV on PC at 4K and it looks amazing same goes with alot of older games that visually hold up in art style or in the fact there filled with attention to detail so the worlds feel so alive with systems walking together to simulate a living world. Playing in 4K just allows everything to shine. Another great example is Arkham Knight (2015) that game looks better than most games released today and on PC at 4K at 60FPS it's amazing.

Tip to make the game look much better. You can increase the Saturation to you're liking and it does an amazing job at making the game more vibrant making the game pop with life of course too you're liking. Recommend only moving it a few slides over until you find something you like. RDR1 does look a little washed out by default so this fixes the problem. Also the game benefits from taking advantage of the new Xbox consoles going from 1280x720 to 3840x2160 allowing you to run the game at 4K which is why it looks so good. They also added in 16x anisotropic filtering, and a tighter lock at 30fps. The PlayStation Plus version is just the base game as it was on the PS3.

I should point out that RDR does not take place in the GTA Universe as some people may cause confusion when bringing it up. In the GTA universe New York is replaced with Liberty City along with the State of New York with The State of Liberty. New York is mentioned alot in RDR2 along with famous landmarks like the Statue of Liberty (Statue of Happiness in GTA IV) and Brooklyn Bridge (Broker Bridge in GTA IV) so it's impossible to have them be connected. So if you ever get into the GTA games just keep that in mind, GTA does share a connection with the Manhunt games and Bully though just not RDR even though both series feature Fictional States and locations while also mentioning real world States and cities as well.

Seeing people play RDR 1 blind after already they completed RDR 2 blind is very surreal to me, in a good way of course. Like anyone watching Star Wars 1-3 then 4-6 as opposed to its original release in terms of real life years. Back when I or everybody in the world walked up to Fort Mercer the first time, none of us knew who Bill was or his prior connection to John in any capacity. We were all like “Uhh, why is this Bill dude so angry?” “Why does John have history with him?”
The effort that went into RDR 2 to go through the whole backstory shown here is nuts. The mechanics of RDR 1, being on a whole different console generation, needless to say they’re much simpler. So it’s not nearly as big a chore, like picking up your hat endlessly or needing to cause virtually no damage to an animal to successfully hunt. #1 isn’t as long or as in depth. It’s still fun and remarkable for way back when. I’ll definitely be watching this whole series in full.

I didnt exactly grow up with this game since i was 20 when it came out, but it was like no game i had played before. It took open worlds to a whole new level for me.
I know Rockstar was abit apprehensive about RDR since alot of people worried that the open world was gonna be too open and too "empty". People where used to the tightly designed cities of Liberty City or Los Santos, with people, cars, constant noise and alot of sensory input, with only small patches of rural areas. It turned out that the expansive "emptiness" was the perfect palet cleanser for the tight cityscape that alot of people where growing abit tired of at the time.
Riding around New Austin was unlike any other game or open world i had seen before, the emptyness brought out a very serene feeling in me and i couldnt get enough of it. The "empty" and expansive world mixed with action and deep story was incredible, i could spend hours just hunting but was also facinated by all the strangers and side content. I played this game 3 times back to back within about 2 months of the release.
Objectively it might not be the best game ever, but to me no gaming experience has come close to how i felt about this game in 2010, RDR2 included.
Getting online and undead nightmare was the cherry on top of my favorite game ever.

This game is one of the many examples of how good the xbox backwards compatible 360 games can look with x enhancements.
Red dead, gears 1,2,3, fallout 3 and splinter cell blacklist really shine via backwards compatibility, well worth checking out even if its just to see the improvements.

Late to the party, but I remember playing this game when I was 13, (26 now). And it was such a trip, John was always the greatest character I had ever seen in a video game, and it was close because Niko Bellic (Gta4) came out around the same time and I thought he was great, but John blew him away. This was the original greatest storyline of all time, before rdr2. Rdr2 is most definitely the most cinematic, best story telling game of all time, but this game being 8 years older than rdr2, it was revolutionary. You’re in for a treat.
Playing this game with no backstory was such a treat because you really didn’t understand what was going on, but it all makes sense in the end. And then RDR2 really explains everything. I hope they remaster this with some improved dialogue. Look forward to watching more!

Love the fellow skybox appreciation! Not many people talk about how good it was for 2010 and how great it holds up, the sunsets, the sunrises, then midnight & midday sky’s are just gorgeous. The night sky in particular i just love the amount of stars that cover it, the devs considering the realistic lack of atmospheric pollution in the game’s time setting when designing the skybox is an insane level of detail.

I first bought this game way back in the days . And what caught my eye was John Marston and it being shooter game . I said to myself " I'll check this game out to see what it's like " . And of course I ended up loving it . After I finished , I saw the game called " Undead Nightmare " and bought that one right away . When the gamers found out about RDR2 , we all couldn't wait for it . They said it was coming out on a certain date , then they gave a later day for it's release . So like me and many others put in our order . And the day it came out , the video store line was around the block. Not to mention that there were 2 diff RDR2 . I think the other one was longer with more side missions .

This game is the reason I purchased my first Xbox console. It was not available on pc and I wanted to play it so bad that I splurged and bought an Xbox 360 just to play this game. The thing I missed most in RDR2 was Liars Dice. Loved playing Liars Dice and sure wish they had included it in RDR2. So glad to see someone playing this amazing game (that is twelve years old) and actually enjoying it as much as you seem to be.

To answer your question - I think those who played the game when it originally came out felt the same way about RDR2 as you do at the beginning of RDR1. We knew the characters. Except we learned about what happened before the gang disbanded and you’re about to learn what happens after.

One thing that I love is how Red Dead Redemption 2 used a new version of John's theme from RDR1 a couple times. The whistling when you first rescue John in Enter, Pursued By A Memory, his theme in the mission Jim Milton Rides Again, and of course the final mission, American Venom.

It's the "adult babysitter" sketch in which a woman hires an old lady to babysit her boyfriend while she's gone (hilarious social satire). He's seen playing Red Dead Redemption at one point in the episode because Fred Armisen is actually a big fan of the game irl.

It's so GREAT to see you back in the RDR universe. I was one that played this game first about a year after it came out. At the time the graphics were insane. It quickly became one of my favorite all time games. It was very strange at first playing RDR2 as Arthur and having John in the gang. Until RDR2 John was my all time favorite game character but now it's almost a toss up between John and Arthur. Yes Bonnie is amazing and when I played this game I didn't know about Abigil so I was soooo shipping John and Bonnie...lol. Also I don't think Arthur's picking on John for being dumb didn't mean uneducated because Dutch made sure they both were. It was more about his life choices and youth.
This is going to be so much fun seeing you experience RDR1. 😁
