There's a lot of us old metal head shredders out there that are finding a home in Synthwave or "shredwave" even still today. Its really cool to hear you demo these sounds to a synthwave track like you did around the 13:26 mark. Thank you.
I personally do agree it is extremely useful tool for your pedalboard also in your home studio and also on stage because you could produce some really surprising effects for your audience especially if you had this in your effects chain and if you control your effects chain by one pedal, it leaves you three for other things on stage. Enjoy and have fun. That's what it's all about and I'd love to check out this. It's certainly reminds me of rack mount gear your lounge studio
Mate, love the way you demonstrate this sort of gear, your knowledge and enjoyment really comes across! I used to own one of these back in the early 90s - sadly no more, and I really wish I still did. Had passed it over to a shop to sell-on-behalf before going overseas for a bit, but they actually went into sudden receivership literally 3 weeks leaving NZ, so not only did I lose the unit, never even got the payout (money from the receivers went to shareholders in the company that owned the shop first, unfortunately everyone else... lost out). Anyways, this fired up some fond old memories of spending weeks and months learning riffs from Ozzy's "No Rest for the Wicked" and Maiden's "Somewhere in Time" using this unit hardout. Keep rocking mate 👍
I actually just got an SPX90ii yesterday, cool unit. So far I like obviously Symphonic, Pitch B & the delay frequency rolloff. This one has more tweakability though.
I also have the FX500 half-space version of this unit. I had one way back in the day (early 90's), although I didn't use it much. A year or two ago, I got nostalgic and got another one. More accurately, my old bass player gave it to me after he played with it for a while and got the FX500B bass version as well. He actually uses the bass version for doing occasional overdubs when recording.
I’ve been hunting for one of the units with the symphonic effect forever. I still don’t understand how no one’s has released a unit with it in so long.
Oh the memories... I never had the 900 but I had is older portable predecessor, the FX500 which I used live for years until I stopped playing for a year and got back into it again years later. I send the FX500 to my brother in the Philippines and what I really like about it was the creation mode and at the time as you could create your own tone and save and rename them.
As far as the Zoom 9030 goes, the distortion and the unique cab sound in there was actually used alot on the biggest budget recordings from the late 80s early 90s aside from NIN. Trey from Morbid Angel used it on all solos and lead stuff both on recording and live up until Domination in 1995 and beyond. Tons of european extreme metal of the time had it for main rhythm distortion and even Brian May from Queen used Zoom presets that could be also found on some other related units that preceded the 9030 all over the Innuendo record. For that period of time the Zoom distortion sounds were as heavily featured as the Marshall one. It was way easier, faster and cheaper in the studio to get good sounds just plugging in the zoom units i guess
Just bought one of these FX900 & it’s FC900 Controller to pair with my Rat R2DU, ADA MP1, Alesis Quadroverb, BBE, Marshall 9200 & 1982B 4x12 cab. I had bought a Rev 7 after you did the vid on that and sadly it doesn’t always work correctly. So said screw it 3 SPX90s in a 1U and less noise I’m Sold.
Great video Leon!!! Cats want to get your attention when, 1-tracking guitar, 2-mixing your tracks or 3- editing your AxeFx 3 presets!!! I know, i have 2 cats that were abandoned.
The thing with the 90’s rack gear is that they sound incredible but they don’t look as cool as the 80’s rack gear and we listen with our eyes… We don’t all listen with our eyes haha and this unit sounds FANTASTIC! Doesn’t look cool because no numpad or big arrows buttons like the SPX 😂😂😂
Man, it really p!sses me off how effortlessly good you are because it reminds me how lazy I've been at practicing. This is a complement, btw. :) Is there a way to get the backing track for what you played over starting at timestamp 13:10? I love that 80's tone and backing.
12:10 - Cool sounding delay. Combines that fast jello-y wobble with the special spatial sauce splattered across the stereo spectrum in a staggered sequence....
Hello, I really like your style and congratulations, I ask you for info, it is possible to drive with a single midi pedalboard both the spx900 rack combined with a soldano type slo Overdrive distortion pedal or mxr extension EVH 5150 OVERDRIVE? I would like to have the possibility to have a preset with spx effect and a preset with spx + distortion thanks
Hello very nice video man! Could you advice please, when you said it's less noisy that spx90, but for example if you compare it to pcm 81 it what do you think? I want to get one of these units, just can't decide which one will be better. I have pcm 90 but it's only reverb unfortunately.
bro let me ask you something, im after a spx90, also is someone around selling a fx900 super cheap for to be honest, im after a chorus efect that is in to the spx90, do you think this one you play with on this video supose to have all this efects ??? thanks so much for the video
Hi Leon. A while ago you did a video for Lukather delays on the DD500? I can’t seem to find it? Could you please point me in the right direction? Or if willing, please share your settings 😀 Thank you in advance 🤗
Please excuse me as I have two questions: as I have a pre-amp that I already very much enjoy (the gain is great), can I use the SPX unit only for the symphonic effect but witout that units' overdrive? And if so, how would I route it in my rack? Thanks!
Thank you, Leon, most appreciated. Would the routing in a rack go from my tube preamp in to the spx990 via the Thru or Effect Loop? (I don't know much about routing as I have never hooked up multiple effects processors together.) Your help is truly invaluable. Thanks again.
The preamp that I am using is a Rocktron Voodu Valve. I saw a Midi Thru/Out and a Midi In but that is it as I looked at the back of the unit. I didn't see a separate Effects Loop. Thanks!
@@LeonTodd I’d strongly recommend it to dispel the mystery. Honestly I listened to two reviews done by you and SPX 90 sounds more 3D more alive more in the mix. You mentioned that you used mixer in axe fx3 loop hence maybe that is playing up with my perception.
@@LeonTodd Ok thx. The manual says u can change output level from -30db to +6 db for both sym and chorus but it will only go to zero. Wont go to +6. Can u check yours? Thx again.
@@LeonTodd I tried hooking up yamaha got loud feedback almost blew speakers. I have 5150 iconic head w/ 4x12 and a line 6 pod go hooked up in 4CM. I have my iconic amp out hooked up to a bray line out box speaker in then back out to my 4x12 cab. I have line out from bray lo-1 to my line in on eventide micropitch. Then stereo outs to inputs of fx900. Then stereo out of fx900 to stereo inputs of rockville stereo power amp rpa5. Then speakon out from rpa5 to two 1/12 cabs. The only effect i use on my dry amp is overdrive on pod go. Am i doing this right? Please help. Thx.
All hail Saint Brian!! The SPX990 also uses the separate feedback delay parameter.
As long as it has setting 15 symphonic, thats all I need.

Dude that thing is amazing! Great playing as usual.
Nice! I’ve still got my SPX 990.

Ahhh no! That's a nightmare scenario isn't it. Old SPX units are pretty cheap nowadays which is nice
"This means I have to race through this video because the cat wants some play time." You have your priorities in the proper order: good.

Classic legendary piece of gear from the eighties and still sounds great now excellent video my friend.
what a great tone, love that symphonic chorus, nothing like it.
Sounds very similar to Yamaha FX500 from 1992! I like even distortion on these units!
I got the FX500 in 1991 but it came out in late 1989 I think. The FX550 might have been out in 1992 with a black facia and different presets.
absolutely love this channel
I didn't even know this thing existed. Awesome!
That unit is freaking awesome the effects are killer LT.Great job I like the grease 🤟🏻

funny thing is I have both the fx500 and the fx990 and it gets interesting patching the 2 together.
Wow what a great sounding unit.
When Brian & Leon get together magic happens!
I'm impressed! Bradshaw approved in sure! Rock on.
TIBBY FLUFFERS!
Guitar playing was pretty awesome, too... ;)
The delay running into pitch detune was surprisingly awesome in a “more is more” way.
Since the SPX was on my list, now I think I'm gonna change my plan and get one of these instead.

This is true!
I’m interested if the FX 900 could be made to do the Dean Deleo thing in a wet/dry/wet set up. Seems perfect for type of rig 😎

Sounds great!!
What’s the difference to Yamaha REV500?
Run vocals through that distortion!
When you turned on Aww Yeah, I went "Aww yeah!" lol
Jeez, you're so inspiring and I'm jealous of you tone, even if I got some PRS... I am far from it!
I recreated the Soft Focus patch on mine and it sounds beautifully Slowdive, the sound is so addicting
It really is!
I was kinda waiting for the cat to start playing and possibly be better than me
Wonderful unit
Uhm, yeah. That distortion. Pew. But I really loved the chorus and flange. Very juicy.
🎉I bought one after watching this video four times. You are toxic😂
The struggle is real!
0:01 - KITTEH!
6:45 - I wonder if it could be simulated in the AxeFX3....
12:10 - Cool sounding delay. Combines that fast jello-y wobble with the special spatial sauce splattered across the stereo spectrum in a staggered sequence....
15:30-ish - these go to 200....
Ten tap or multitap would probably do it. Set one of the Quad tap type delays to have a delay tap with feedback but no level
Delay 2 is very cool!, do you think it can be done in the AxeFx III?
yeah the Ten Tap or Multidelay should cover it
The Roland RSP550 has that feedback delay if I understood you correctly.

If you're familiar with the PCM90 the PCM81 will pair nicely with it. The Yamaha is a lot simpler to use but not quite as deep or detailed.

Had to get fx 900!
Does it sound the same like SPX90 - mean Symphonic patch. Thx
I just bought a SPX 90 and I am very new to this effect processor thing and was wondering if you could make a video on how to connect it to an amp

Thinking about getting a spx 2000. Whats the difference?
Hi Leon... Which other unit can support that routing choice? It s great to run effects in parallel. Thanks
Modern stuff like the Axe-Fx will obviously do it, but off the top of my head - Eventide Eclipse, TC G Force, Kawaii RV4, Lexicon MPX-1
Hello kitty!🥰
Sounds better then the AX
that kitty right there!!!
Could you run one of these through an effects loop of a guitar amp head??? Not much of a player that likes having pedals everywhere when im playing.
Yep
What is the difference between the FX-900 and the SPX-900?

This unit is lightyears ahead of its predecessor FX770. Still, I don't like the base sound of the converters. Sadly.
Cool cat!

Did you find the spx990 noisy?
Dude, do you make synthwave too? Very The Midnight esque backing track right there.
I bought the stems from their Bandcamp for that one!
*How can I get that preset AHHH YEAH of of you?*
I really wonder wat those pickups are 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹
SC245 pickups
Is it me OR SPX90 is kind of more punchy, organic And 3D sounding??
Still a great video And as usual great playing.

Thx! Thought mine was broke.
Just bought this for $125. Can i connect this from my eventide micropitch delay then into my stereo poweramp to wet cabs?
Definitely. There's stereo ins so go Eventide - FX900 - power amp

Thx Leon. Love your videos, best on YT! 🤟🏻

Do i need to use trs cables for eventide or are ts ok?
TS are probably fine
