My favorite G. I. Joe Team Leaders are:
General Joseph R. Colton (the Original G. I. Joe, who was seen in a command during DDP’s G. I. Joe: America’s Elite series).
General Flagg, the team’s first Commanding Officer.
then Hawk- Larry Hama gave him a James T. Kirk streak; he’ll do the right thing first, Not what the Rules & Regs say.
I never bought the animated chain of command. And Larry Hama never put either Flint or Beach-Head high on the command line in the comics.
Duke as ‘leader’? That’s like claiming Lady J is better looking than either Scarlett, Cover Girl, Agent Helix, Daina of the October Guard, or even the Baroness of Cobra Command.

@dinomonzon7493 OK so not a Duke fan...got it 👍 but I guess that's what makes something like the Joes great, so many characters on the rosters of both Joesnand Cobras that there is someone for everyone to latch onto and identify with :) for me it all started out with the toys, then cartoon, and finally the comics so I can appreciate the different approaches to the mythos. Case in point, even if I'm ultimately a Duke/Scarlett shipper, I can and do respect and admire the care and expertise of how Hama built up and designed the Snake Eyes Scarlett dynamic in the comics...it's one of the most unique and special relationship in 80s pop culture IMHO 👍

First off, Duke was Never the ‘Leader’ of the G. I. Joe Team- that was claimed often in the cartoons, but Larry Hama, who Co Created and Wrote the Marvel and IDW (as well as the current Skybound) G. I. Joe Comics series always stated that Duke was just ‘ the First Sergeant and not the ‘leader’’ as he clarified in the letter column of Marvel Comics’ G. I. Joe #84.
In Marvel Age Magazine #20 (which came out years earlier), Larry noted in an interview that “in the regular scheme of things there’s the Commanding Officer. For the Joes, this is Hawk. Below him is an Executive Officer (never specified), and finally the First Sergeant.
In G. I. Joe #33, Hawk assigns Duke as First Sergeant to field command the team after General Austin promotes Hawk, Scarlett, Stalker, Breaker, Grunt, Rock ‘n Roll, Zap and Flash one paygrade and names them as the Administrative arm of the Pit, G. I. Joe Headquarters.
No thanks to the cartoon series and DDP’s first G. I. Joe Comic series, many fans (especially the impressionable ones) readily believe the myth that Duke is both ‘the Leader’ , as well as that he and Scarlett are an item. (Larry Hama would later reveal in the IDW series that Duke is a Married NCO).
My favorite G. I. Joe Leader?
General Joseph R. Colton, then General Flagg, the team’s first CO, then General Hawk.

Thanks for the very detailed explanation! Much appreciated. I imagine rhat the cartoon wasn't much of a stickler for real world military rankings and even if Duke technically wasn't the rank of leader, I always saw him as such in the cartoon. At the very least the field leader. And that was good enough for me :) as for being married yes I did read about that but couldn't get much info on it. Anyway it is an iteration of Duke. Just like traitor Duke in reloaded. But for me cartoon Duke is my preferred version 👍

      G. I. Joe Reloaded was DDP's best comic take on G. I. Joe IMHO. It was far more serious; Cobra Commander was seen as competent & credible, & the Joes were set in a more realistic world, closer to Tom Clancy's universe. No fake countries, a smaller & more realistic G. I. Joe Team & no ninja overuse/overkill.

I liked G. I. Joe Reloaded, and America's Elite best, especially when Joe Casey wrote the latter series. It finally had General Colton in charge- loved issue #8 when he (and Stalker) put Flint in his place for overreacting to Lady J's loss via the Red Shadows. Even James Bond recovered far faster by comparison.
Their take on G. I. Joe Vs. Transformers was far better than Marvel's 'official' version. And their Arashikage Showdown graphic digest was good, but could've been better minus Kamakura and Nunchuk.
The first Joe series by DDP was obviously influenced by the cartoon series; if one knows where to look and what lines to read, one can spot the easter eggs from the show. And it was no help that it adapted the cartoon chain of command in G. I. Joe #26. And unlike the Marvel Comics series, it lacked the level of realism or military research Larry Hama uses in writing his tales.

It's amazing how very insanely long it took for some toy lines - many of which have had endless reboots and reissues - to finally make these characters' figures look like exactly as they were depicted in the adaptations. I know laser sculpting is a help, but it seemed to also be some sort of mental block to just do this simple thing.

FWIW I've repeatedly heard that Duke was largely inspired by the cowboy actor John "The Duke" Wayne. I know John Wayne played in several war movies so that might give you an idea what they were going for. However, they wanted a slightly toned-down version when directing Duke. John Wayne is one of those actors where an impression of him can turn into an outright parody if not done well.

As far as Hasbro is concerned, they have multiple hair pieces for Shipwreck, Lady Jaye, Baroness, so why not CG? They could have included an extra hair piece in that $25 overpriced pack but all they did was include a wrench and shotgun! They chinced the customers out on that figure.

Lots of arguments about rank here, but the Joe team never really put a lot of emphasis on that. After all, they are called GI Joe. A “Joe” is someone E4 and below, meaning the emphasis is on regular lower enlisted. • @charleslennon1
    @charleslennon1 7 дней назад +1

I beg to differ wholeheartedly. Here's why.
Stalker was the very FIRST Joe recruited to the team. Stalker then recruited Snake-Eyes. Stalker and led the MOST missions out of all of the Joes. Although not a clan member, Stalker is one of the "broken lines" within the Arashikage [Shinobi] Clan. He connects the unbroken lines between Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow, and Scarlet, another non clan member, is the other broken line. Haven't you ever wondered why those four characters' names start with the letter [S]? It's because they ARE the series.
Within the group, Stalker is their soul, Storm Shadow their spirit, Scarlet their salvation, and Snake their secret weapon. Or you can look at it this way. Stalker is war, Storm pestilence, Scarlet famine, Snake death.
Stalker exemplifies excellence in conventional warfare, while Storm Shadow excels in unconventional tactics. Scarlet symbolizes transcending a soldier's potential, and Snake Eyes embodies the strengths of all three. All four are deadly in their fields but can easily step into the others and kick ass too. Without Stalker recruiting and vouching for Snake-Eyes and LEADING the other original Joes, there would not be a GI Joe.
Regarding Stalker's lack of prestige, it's safe to say he wasn't 'marketable.' I'll let you decide what that means. He was only prominently featured once in the GI Joe Movie [1983.] and intentionally marginalized throughout every cartoon from that point forward. Yet, at the same time, prominently featured in some of the best GI Joe comic stories from Marvel. There is a reason why Larry Hama wrote Stalker as the leader; it was due to his own history as a US Army veteran. The toys and cartoons were patterned after Fred Williamson and later Carl Weathers. On a side note, it's a shame they didn't cast the late Mr. Weathers as Stalker in the reboot sequel.
Stalker's action figures, especially the giant and unique versions, are some of the most sought-after in the collectors' market.
If Stalker were an actual person, his 201-File would read like an actual Special Operations resume. It's not fanciful or outlandish, yet very realistic.

Oh well, there's always Scarlet 👍👍👍 thanks again and I hope to hear more from you!

Hawk’s code name is the weapon system he came with. That’s a Hawk SAM system. Spain still uses those.
As for Duke, he was the first sergeant, not the leader. He was the senior-most NCO. He didn’t outrank any of the officers, but they would never act without his support for a plan. Flint technically outranks him, but if you pay attention, he always defers to his top sergeant, because a warrant officer is a former sergeant.
If you pay attention, the bulk of the Joes are enlisted, not officers. That follows military organization. An infantry platoon has a single officer out of 40-50 men. A company has five out of up to 200 men. One man out of every ten is a sergeant. Duke is a Sergeant Major, but he is the First sergeant, so he outranks any other Sergeant Major.
First Sergeant is a role, not a rank. He’s the sergeant the company CO asks for advice.

9:36 Honestly I would think Duke IRL would have his own enlisted rank made up foir his station. So he can command a orgnastion of GIs US milltaery standard infantry as a cornal which is the highest rank commonly seen on the front and most common people to share Duke want for action are fighter pilots hince why a ton of US Aces never advanced beyond Cornal even though they easly could have... Although general can also do that it's just a massive risk and if you make general then your skill set is better spent behind the front managing your modern arnmies as an ezcutive.... Outside of special cases who want to transfer nby goibg to collage from any enlisted rank to experience/merit/want adjusted officer rank or the collage grade who didn';t want to be an officer because of the resonmblity you need to take on in the US milltay ti be one... In the modern the vast majority US milltary enlisted/officers stay in their lane their whole carrier... This does not mean enliosted can have higher paygrades then master sarget... GThey very much can in cluding the same pay grade as a 4 star general which is the highest rank you can get in any US miklltary branch and their is a sarget rank tomatch.... Which outside of emergencies like WW2 when the US milltary booled to an insane size and competlity fight every where on earth so iut neeed a 5 star general the highest rank in the US milltray acting as the general over the 4 star genrals.... Which when the 5 starrank is inactive the US presdent is the highest US milltary rank of commander and chief... Though you can not be active duty as per the constution you plaged algence two we you took office like all US govermnt members of anyrank...
