Shankar Mahadevan is a trained Carnatic Classical artiste. He has been trained to hold and take small breaths while singing so that the requirement to breathe doesn't affect the song in any way. He does breathe in this song but those are small measured breaths which you will not be able to discern easily.
@@GOTGames In his prime he actually did it without a single inhale. That was absolutely insane. Sadly it was more than 2Decades ago. So recordings from then are not around as they are now. I tried to find the OG. But yes even this is crazy. The OG was pure insanity.

The man is a legend and can sing anything ... is highly classically trained ... he is got some amazing stuff. I really like his rendition of Shiv Tandav Strotram.
This is my turn to shine 😜 This song came out in 1998, I think, and at the time, I read an interview with the singer. Yes, the concept of the song Breathless was to record a song without any pauses, hence the title. The studio version has him sing seemingly in one breath, but it's edited together. He himself admitted he did take breaths while recording it 😄 That said, when he does sing it live, it isn't *quite* as seamless. If you listen carefully, you can hear the very short pauses he takes in between to breathe. It's more noticeable if you are familiar with the studio version, which you should definitely listen to btw. I used to sing this song myself, and even though I'm not trained, I could perform it too. It's just a matter of some practice and good lung power, which you usually already have if you have been singing as long as I have (over two decades at this point). One more bit of trivia - the lyrics written out by hand covered four foolscap sheets. This is another thing that was mentioned in the interview.
Shankar Mahadevan is unique in many things that he does, some of very special songs are Shiva stotram and many such complex pronunciations. His many compositions are unique!
He is one of those rare commercial movies singer who is trained in Carnatic & Hindustani classical singing (both very different styles of singing). You should listen to his classical concerts. His best commercial songs are Aata Hudugatavo (kannada) & Mithavaa (Hindi)
Now, since he is classically trained, he can do things that Westerns can not do. When I say classical, I mean Indian classical. It has nothing to do with rap micro breaths, but, then again, I am no musician. He is one of the most talented contemporary composers and singers in India and Bollywood. If you listen to the recorded song, there is no breath in that. And, let us be honest, you can hear him take his breaths easily, but it is magical nonetheless, since it is live.
The control of breath is considered extremely important for singers and the Yoga, meditation practitioners. You are amazed because you haven't seen anything like this before. Shankar is exceptional because he has a complete control over his breath. He is a classical Indian music practitioner and is trained from a very young age to master his breath.
There are two versions of this song. He sang the regular version in the show. There's a reprise version as well. Both are amazing. Also, listen to Sonu Nigam's live performance videos.
This is only half of the song. This is the song that delivers a story of a man meeting a girl their life together, their breakup and again meeting and life together. This full song is for 7 min
You kept reiterating how the greatest rappers can't rap at this pace & breathlessly, HOWEVER, you did not or missed the fact that he was singing through a intricately composed MELODY based on Indian/Hindustani classical RAGA & he was on point with his tones & scales & then he managed to do that at an immensely fast pace without missing a beat, but first he never missed a scale in that melodious composition... You should listen to more Shankar Mahadevan songs, especially his Live renditions, before Arijit Singh came, he was the most versatile singer & best live singer I've ever witnessed...
You should hear the kids singing kalinga Nartana thillana by Kuldeep M Pai. You will be floored. That is how they get trained from that age. So was Shankar Mahadevan
"Breathless" is an incredible song and Shankar Mahadevan sang it originally also. Not many singers can do it on stage live. Recently a 7 year old boy from Kerala, named Avirbhav sang this on a reality show called Superstar Singer 3 on SONY ET and did incredibly well. What is more incredible is, as Hindi is not his native language, he is just picking the basics of it during this show. Have a listen and be amazed...

my heart beat with

my turbulent dreams
my lips move in song
my eyes are dream filled
and my dreams hold
those past moments
when she arrived
to take over my feelings
and nestle in my heart
how can I describe to you
that beloved face
hidden in her tresses
like a dew washed blossom
behind a pall of fog /mist
like the moon behind the clouds
peering through the curtain of night
like a morn bright and brilliant
her eyes an ocean of dreams
that held a sparkling spread
of stars of love
each wave of her words
a shower of pearls
the echo of silver anklets
wine spilling breaking into a goblet
like hidden hands stroking
musical strings
like a song serenading
a moonlit night
like a soft
whisper that beckons
how sweet those words
how strange those encounters
when i learnt
how emotions melt the heart
how quests find the sought
how the moon alights on land
how earth at times may contain
the splendour of heaven
how she drew me near
to tell me that
we were destined to meet
as flowers to bloom
these ties are forever
eternal our bond
each life time
has brought us together
her words like honey
filled my ears
held open in my eyes
the gates of a
many hued world
that existed
but was nowhere
when my dream lay shattered
when my eyes fell open
i found i saw
the one that had come
to light up my sight
to dwell in my being
is gone from me
bereft sits my soul
abandoned my heart
no hope remains
no longings linger
