This song is over around 25 yrs old. A.R. Rahman single handedly saved Bollywood music from mediocrity when he came in in the 90s in my opinion. He is a music producer, director and singer and has produced music in various languages. He got an Oscar for his work in Slumdog millionaire. ❤ he is amazing live ❤️

The language is Tamil, except for the repeated phrase (Take it easy). Urvashi is a name given to girl babies and is used in the song for rhyming. The song basically conveys the lead character's take on life. It means that when wierd/unexpected things happen, don't be affected by them but take them easy. Except for Rahaman, much of the song (including lyrics) have been improvised to make it more relevant to the current gen. That's the reason you hear names like Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump etc. The guy in Red shining coat is a maverick Indian percussionist Shivamani (A R Rahman's longtime friend too).

Yeah. A.R Rehman you guessed correctly. He is a composer that started from south India and revolutionised a lot of techniques in Orchestration and composing. He is primarily a composer. You might already know his works... He did the soundtracks and songs of Slum dog Millionaire.. winning 2 Academy awards.
One of his major achievement is including modern instruments, western and other foreign styles smoothly into the framework of Indian classical music. His songs are built on the foundation of age old Carnatic music and hindustani music (so does almost all amazing Indian songs).

One thing many people having hard time to realise about Indian music is that, Indian music is closely tied with movie industry. Selling records, albums, live performances are all fairly recent in India. So a lot of amazing, classic songs are movie songs.
And it is kinda backfiring in the sense that in the west, people don't usually go for movie songs when they think about hearing a song and hence a lot of Indian artists from 80's , 90's and 2000's are completely unheard outside.

Glad you have started listening to AR Rahman. He is easily one of India’s greatest musicians ever and the iconic face of Indian music for the rest of the world.
His filmography discography musicals repertoire is unmatched, dare I say even by the greats of the Hollywood pantheon. Slumdog was just what got him noticed by the West but if you start exploring his boundless genre bending music you will rapidly see why he is what he is .
Don’t go by people who recommend his ‘old’ songs’ only, since the essence of an artists growth is their ability to constantly break new ground and evolve, rather than get stuck up recycling their greatest hits. He is innovative but his melodies and musicality are indelibly rooted in India’s rich and mammoth musical culture and history.
Just a caveat that all his film music is built to confirm and uplift the movie or story he is scoring for and are emotionally driven than contrived stereotyped boxed genres. An open minded approach will be most appropriate. Don’t let the video come in the way of your listening experience…

Those sounds at 4:55 are notations of rythm in the Indian music. Just as we have names for musical notes so a melody can be written, we have notations for rythm too, mainly for Indian rythm instruments like Tabla, Mridangam etc which have various parts which produce different sounds and also produce a different sound based on how it is hit (with a finger, palm etc) and with what force.

A R Rehman is nothing short of a genius. In 90s he changed the grammar of music in Indian popular scene with is earthy melodies woven within new age synth sampler sounds and voice sampling. He broke through the scene with Roja. He rightly earned the title Motzart of Mdrass (Madras is old name of Chennai = one of the largest cities of India). He won Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire and has scored number of broadway productions also. His musical style is just HIS and conforms to no other existing styles = be it Indian or any other place of the world.

I gave hand shake to him and wished him that he will soon be the best musician c composer in the world . He smiled at me and thanked me . Since i was on duty as technical manager and working on xray baggage system alone and except me no one was in the departure hall and with all my favourite singers,, as a music lover , it was an amazing experience to see AR Rahman with his mother . When I went upto his house entrance in Chennai after many years , I felt happy that I met him in 1990 and my wish to him in person came true as Oscar winner . Thanks for posting this video.
