The 2020 Porsche Taycan Turbo S is a serious machine. Unlike other sports EV's, which seem to offer thrilling acceleration but ultimately mean to replace driving, rather than improving it, the Taycan is the driver's EV. It's the EV designed and built by people who have won every major endurance race ever hosted. Its new 800V architecture, stunning good looks, and positively bonkers pace combined with the seriousness of build quality you get from Porsche, combines to make the best production EV money can buy.
Porsche provided the vehicle, insurance, and free access to a charging station for this review.

Not really, that honour goes to GM. Of all companies. The EV1 was... very ahead of it's time, and started the EV conversation to begin with, showed that their is a market to be had. A pity that GM would go on to do EVERYTHING that they could to bury it.
Tesla can at least say that they popularized the idea to the point that the traditional manufactures took notice, which to be fair was necessary. That said, if things were different (say GM had more faith in the EV1)... I am not sure that Elon would have made the same push, because if he didn't do it, someone else might have.

There ist one thing to clarify: the Taycan recuperates with 265kW and does this when you brake. This is really sharp braking without using the actual brakes.

    • @kaigo8463
      @kaigo8463 4 года назад

@n s Don't know (nor will I ever be able to test this car;-) ). I also don't know if you can actually choose how to brake. What I learned from some German videos was what Porsche employees said: the Taycan does about 80% of the braking events by recuperation. They decided to only use recuperation when you actually use the brake pedal. It makes some kind of sense if you recuperate with 260kW to do it this way because one pedal driving won't be fun with that much recuperation power. Probably also helps the sports car feeling. Realistically, the Taycan is probably the only commercial EV which is designed as a sports car. It is always compared to the Model S, but the Model S is not really sports car. On the other hand, it is the benchmark for EV performance. So what else one should compare the Taycan to...?
I just saw some videos where people have driven it even on a race track in Germany using basically only the recuperation. When it starts using the real breaks, it goes almost already to ABS.
Anyhow, I think the Taycan must a hell lot of fun to drive, if you can afford the price ;-).

Build quality is shotty , for being electric they arent proving to be very reliable let alone more reliable the ICE , And considering Tesla's are supposed to be "luxury cars" excluding the model 3 , they are sub par compared to other luxury cars of equal value when it comes to features. when you buy a Tesla (other than the model 3) you are getting a car thats no where near as good as it should be for the price. I wouldn't mind a model 3 , it seems to be priced well for what you get , and complaints seem to be pretty minimal but other than the Model 3 i wouldn't touch a Tesla. ya Tesla has the biggest range , but thats really all they have going for them IMO. Also i cant Stand Tesla's approach to Owner maintenance , by which i mean they basically absolutely don't want you working on the car at all , and they make getting parts very difficult and or impossible depending on the part you need.

Actually, you can't but even for an EV it's weird. Most EV's applies regen when you lift from the accelerator (aka "one pedal driving"), the Taycan doesn't do this because the regen system is part of the brake system so it's applied with the brake (and the hierarchy is regen first before the pads). The only think that you have control over is how aggressive the regen gets which is a standard thing with EV's in this class, but you can't turn it off.

Porsche's idea of coasting being more efficient, is a flawless example of something that is true on paper but untrue on pavement. Yes, if you coast up to a light and come to a stop with no braking or regen, that is the most efficient. It also involves spending about a mile going at 13 miles per hour. Near as makes no difference, the whole reason a hybrid gets good mileage is its ability to drive around with "too much" kinetic energy and not lose it all forever via the conventional brakes. Regen is a really big deal. So you've either got to have it in the gas pedal, in the brake pedal, or lose a lot of efficiency in the real world. Or maybe put it on a big badass rally handbrake style Man Lever. That'd be cool too.

There is simple solution to coast and regen problem:
Let the car coast and put third pedal for regen control.
I could be used as 'negative torque pedal', so when car is dead stop, to reverse it, or in case there is any brake failure to stop the car by applying the torque in reverse. It could make parallel parking so much faster.

The regeneration system is actually adjustable, you can make it do what the Tesla does as in braking on release of the gas pedal for energy recovery. He has it turned off or in coasting mode.

You need to setup a heart rate monitor when you drive cars like this and post the results real time on the screen as you review them. It would be cool to see what really gets the heart going.

@@MrPland1992 you do NOT run away from 600cc sport bikes!!! They will leave your truck for dead!!! However.... This looked like an SV650, they are not sport bikes. They are comfy fun cruisers, they will do 0-60 pretty quick but over 80 they die pretty fast!!! But yes he didn't try at all which helps a ton. If you ever "raced" a 600 sport bike and believe you actually won, i assure you its because he didn't try at all😂😂😂

Raymond Newbill agreed mate, some people don’t understand the speed a bike is capable off nor the skill necessary to ride. People just see them and don’t see them.
an 04 r6 can do an 11 sec quarter and 0-60 in 3.5
If a rider isn’t confident or skilled enough he won’t get these numbers... but a truck below a 1000hp ? I can’t see that happening.

But we have walked many 600's in a jeep srt8(the old one) with 4 people in the car and in a ram 1500 with bolt ons. Not sure how much balls it takes to flat out a bike on the worlds widest freeway.. A 11 second silverado is just a cam ,stall and gears. 4 door diesel trucks out here run 11's with only a tune.. A friend has several 350+hp turbo bikes though, really curious what that feels like.

Matt... Outstanding video and thank you for giving us the real facts. 17 mi and depleted 40% of the battery in a Taycan Turbo S by the end of the RUclips video. That's equivalent to 42.5 miles on a full charger. None of us will be driving the car that hard but food for thought if you think you ever would.

The range didn’t actually drop 50 miles. It just calculated what your range would be if you continued driving like that down to zero. Once you start driving in traffic, the range gauge will re-adjust.

2:09 think of volts like rpm and amps like torque .. put them together (multiply) and you have kw or hp .. more volts means you can run the same amps and have more power ... big amps are what needs the fat low resistance cable, just as with big torque you need fatter axles .. so more volts means you can more effectively exploit the potential of the same approx setup (with a few tweaks to keep those volts where they belong)
