    I bought a similar one for an FT5D and it outputs 12V. At first I was a bit worried because the stock charger supplies the same 10.8V like yours but then I saw that Yaesu sells a different charging cable that delivers 12V to the radio. I also use the 12V cable for a while now and the radio is working just fine. I can’t say that it charges much faster if at all, but it allows me to charge it on the go from a USB power bank which is way more convenient in this day and age where everyone uses USB-C, except the ham radio manufacturers that are somehow still stuck on last century’s technology with USB micro-B.

      FYI, see my top level comment about that cable. If you use a charger that provides 12V maximum (as some chargers do) then you’re sending 12V to the radio (higher than Yaesu’s 10.5 but still safe).
      BUT, the cable can actually request 20V and it will gladly use it if the specific charger offers it (and many do). 20V may be enough to damage the radio. It’s unclear what the true maximum is.
      There are specific cables designed to limit the voltage requested (9V and 12V are common options). But that cable is not one of those.

      A word of caution:
      Yaesu spec is 10.5V. It can work fine with 12V as well.
      But that cable, if connected to a USB-C supply that is capable of higher voltage, will provide 20V to the radio instead.
      See my other comment. It looks like the charger used in the video is capable of a maximum of 12V, so that’s what the radio got. But some chargers (and power banks) do offer 20V.

    I think that cable puts out 20volts from what I can tell, I imagine the FT-70D has some form of voltage regulator onboard but it’s hard to say what it’s upper limit is.
    Mind you, you would think if it didn’t that it would blow up immediately so maybe it’s fine? Would be nice to know official specs from Yaesu however.

    • @TheSmokinApe
      @TheSmokinApe  Год назад

      The supplied charger supplies 10.5v, PD will negotiate voltage with the load. If you don't mine me asking, where are you getting 20v?

    • @nils3030
      @nils3030 7 месяцев назад

      @@TheSmokinApe yeah, but it can only negotiate the voltage with an actual PD receiving end, no? I.e. it's a USB-C cable and there are two devices talking the USB-C PD protocol and negotiating the voltage. Your radio is not actually able to negotiate PD, since its a plain DC input.
      It seems this cable is meant for charging non-PD Lenovo laptops (which take around 20V DC), so the cable is probably negotiating the PD source into delivering those 20V, and then forwarding it to the laptop.
      Of course your charger can only output 10V, so that's what it's going to see at the other end, but that's only a sideffect of combining these exact two components.
      I bet if you combine this cable with a beefier PD charger you'll see 20V at the other end.
      So all in all this sounds like a very dangerous recommendation, and people could destroy their gear with this cable.

    The FT-70D's battery issue is most aggravating when you are out and about and no wall outlet is handy --- but I did a quick search and there are portable battery packs with high wattage PD-3.0 ports... but then, if I can carry a portable battery bank, I could just carry spare FT-70 Batteries. Decisions, decisions...

  • @rainmannoodles
    @rainmannoodles Год назад +2

    CAUTION: *Even though it works here, that cable might damage the radio if used with some chargers.*
    The way PD works is that the device requests the voltages it can accept. The PD charger then supplies the highest one. These cables have a chip that acts like a device and requests a preset voltage.
    This cable looks like it’s designed to request 20V. Your charger may or may not supply that (12V is a common limit). So it might work now with that charger because it’s actually getting 12V, but if you plug it into another charger that CAN supply the full 20V… well, you can see the problem.
    You could test this by using a multimeter to check the actual voltage on the barrel jack output.
    For comparison, I use a cable that’s designed to request 12V so it wouldn’t have this problem.

    • @TheSmokinApe
      @TheSmokinApe  Год назад

      Great point. The specs on the PD adapter say; 3v, 9v and 12v; the only spec I see on the cable is 100w 20v and 5A.

    • @rainmannoodles
      @rainmannoodles Год назад

      @@TheSmokinApe Yeah, that’s what I suspected. If you connect that cable to a USB-C power supply capable of providing the full 20V it might not end well.
      I don’t know what the actual input range on the Yaesu radios is, but I’m definitely not going to test it on mine.

    • @rainmannoodles
      @rainmannoodles Год назад

      @@TheSmokinApe You might want to do some testing and/or issue a warning on the video. My concern is that people are going to have 20V capable supplies (many of mine are) and it’s very possible it could fry those radios.
