A typical Peranakan dish which is rich in flavours - fruity, spicy and creamy all at the same time. The many ingredients explain why Udang Masak Lemak Nenas is so delicious.
When being introduced to Peranakan dishes, you may have come across these delicious curry prawns with pineapples or in the Malay language, it is called “Udang Masak Lemak Nenas” (pineapple prawn curry). The tangy pineapple flavour and the fragrance of the spices make this an appealing dish and is delicious even when simply taken with plain white rice.
Blend all the required ingredients together and once that is done, cooking the curry is really simple. You may have noticed the long list of ingredients but do not be intimidated. It will be well worth the effort. That explains why this dish is so flavourful. A crucial part of the preparation is to ensure that the blended ingredients are cooked until fragrant.
To complete the dish, add some strips of kaffir lime leaves to enhance its fragrance. In Germany, I found the kaffir lime leaves at the the frozen section of the Asian grocer. Skip the leaves if you are unable to get them. The curry prawns will taste just as tantalizing.

All of your cooking programmes have very detailed long winded explanation which can be boring. Go straight to the cooking process too much explanation is no good

I just had ikan masak lemak in Malacca for a short weekend trip in a very unassuming Peranakan kopitiam and the best thing is the tauke-nio offered to refill the gravy.. slurp..I never tasted any masak lemak so good before and in search of the recipe. Glad that you have this in video as I'm so going to try to cook it own my own.

For my version..lot of onion and slice it..heat the pan and saute the onion..and on the coconut milk..let it boil for a while..add "serbuk kunyit" and add in pine apple and prawn..season salt and sugar..although it simple but the taste is awesome..the nyonya version also cool..thumbs up

Another winner in my eyes! I wish I had discovered this kind of food years ago but I am totally into it now! This looks amazing and even though Belchan smells and most Americans are not used to it it certainly does add to the flavor layers!
I am just lucky that my neighbours don't come knocking on my door complaining about the smell of the belacan. LOL. Good that you love it. We could be fantastic neighbours. Hahaha
Nyonya Cooking (Malaysian Recipes) No worries about the belacan; By itself, belacan smells a bit funky but when you toast it (my grandma toast it over the naked flames) the smell is totally different. I actually like the toasty smell even though I kind of hate the raw balacan myself.
If you want to really freak your guests, go make Cincalok.
Maybe left friendless...lol :P
That is one great recipe,Dimples...I think it will be my project # 2!!!:):):):)

Hey Jessica! Thanks for dropping by. But....I've not posted any Indian curries >< Only Malay and Nyonya/Peranakan (Straits Chinese) style. But I do get what you mean, will put it up the request list okay ^^
hi can u make a video of lemak cili padi ayam❤
What can I do if I want this curry to be mild?
Will the curry look different if I use less chilli?
My family don't eat spicy food but I really want to try this recipe, please help me:)
ima make this. :O However i need to find candlenuts. i live in Hawaii where there are candlenut trees, called kukui, growing everywhere. Do you know how to process them for cooking or are they just used raw?
Oh yeah yeah! Please do make it. Would love to know your thoughts on the taste ^^ Candle nuts aren't eaten raw and if I am not mistaken, they are poisonous when raw >< You have to roast them to use in cooking. Try this: www.ehow.com/how_7726345_roast-kukui-nuts.html :) Good luck & happy cooking!
Can you substitute carrots for pineapple?
Make Hainanese Chicken Rice please haha!! ;DDD
Won Wi Lee she did hainanese chicken rice
I made this curry dish for hari raya. my friends did love it and found it delicious. however, I couldn't find kaffir lime leaves, candle nuts, galangal, and shallots, so I left the leaves and nuts out and substituted galangal and shallots with ginger and white onions. Where can I find galangal, shallots, and candle nuts? Would another kind of nut do?
Melati MohdSalleh I found galangal at the asian grocer. Shallots can be found at any supermarket while candlenuts can be substituted with macadamia nuts :D
Hi! Just some small request can you make a video on muah chee or tutu kueh? :)
Heya...sure. Up on request list!
wowww,great channel my dear...like asian cusine...nice recept...wowww
i have a new recepe for baking you can look when you like, thanks for watching greatings from Amsterdam / Berlin Tom from chaoskitchen51
Haha. I remember when cooking in Bangkok they had this shrimp paste. It smelled like somebody had extremely sweaty feet and needed to change pair of socks:P But it tastes better than it smells anyway.
Extremely sweaty feet!! Oh dear...how could ya! Hahaha...
Can I add lady fingers and tomato?
Hello, you're awesome...I love your cooking.. thanks for sharing ;o)
Thanks darling! You are just being AWESOME! Great to see you here ^^
May I know is there any difference if I add the coconut milk last?
Yes, the coconut milk needs to thicken during the cooking process and if its added at the end of the cooking, the dish will not be that fragrant.
new subscribed !! D
saya suka channel ni..but sya tao berapa faham in english
i didnt catch what happened to the belacan after toasting it on the pan?
I blended it with the other ingredients :) ruclips.net/video/WOHOrIoWEcE/видео.html You can refer to the whole recipe here: nyonyacooking.com/udang-masak-lemak-nenas/
Nyonya Cooking thanks! love from sg❤
I can almost smell it but I am sure I can't find 2 ingredients (candlenut and galangal) in my supermarket, is there a substitution?
Oh dear...thanks no fun BUT try substituting candlenut with macadamia nuts and ginger for galangal, though I must say ginger gives a different taste but that's the closest you can get >
