We just found out what has been making my daughter so sick with irritatible bowel type symptoms... soybean oil. Try finding foods at the store that don't have that specific oil. It's nearly impossible. Her stomach issues have really opened my eyes to all the crap that is in our food. So we have been trying our hardest to go back to basics and making everything at home. Great video, Lisa! Thanks for sharing your thoughts about this with us.

Also note that several of the labels you showed stated “Ingredients derived from a Bioengineered Source” or “Bioengineered Food Ingredients” or “Contains a Bioengineered Food Ingredient”.

It's crazy how many labels now say that. I tried a diet brand last year and up to that point I believed it was only on a few food labels. That was an eye opener to see about 80% of their food had that label. Whole foods or the least ingredients is the way to shop.

Good list! We watch for unsweetened cranberry juice to go on sale on ur natural foods aisle and stock up, then. Stir a little into water or sparkling water to make a tangy refreshing drink.

I do something like that as well, I buy the 💯% unsweetened cherry juice at TJ & mix it with plain sparkling water. I try not to buy sparkling water with natural flavors except spindrift my family’s favorite.

I avoid fruit juices and stick to whole fruits. Then you get the fiber plus the juice is so concentrated it'll blast your blood sugar way up. It usually takes 3-4 oranges using an electric juicer to produce one small glass of juice. I keep small bottles of shelf stable Minute Made for emergencies when my sugar drops.

Good points! I had some allergy issues many years ago effecting my quality of life and started paying more attention to the ingredients lists for common processed food and I was surprised what I seen. Also there are some evil things that manufacturers are trying to hide from people like putting aspartame in milk and not having to add it to the ingredients list. Back in 2013 the dairy industry was interested to have the FDA approve hiding that controversial ingredient from the label.

Interesting, those are all the exact same things I also stopped buying a few years ago and for those same reasons!
I really try to watch what I eat or drink especially as I'm getting older and seeing for myself what eating all those products did to my health. I've been reversing it for 5 years now and my body does feel so much better overall and I have more energy!
All of the ingredients in the items you listed have inflammatory effects on our bodies and cause chronic health issues. Unfortunately not enough people do the research for themselves and still continue eating all those additives and preservatives mainly because it may be more convenient to have things ready made. I learned to prioritize my time to make homemade foods for myself so I know exactly what is going into my body.
It took a while for me to finally get it and realize how important my health is, thankfully it wasn't too late for me.

Love this list! ❤ Years ago I stopped buying what you've listed here. At first it was just to save money, but then I discovered the health issues as well. What I've also added to the list, mayonnaise, ketchup, and more recently, ice cream, gingerbeer (which is just a stronger ginger-ale) and mustard. These additional items are much cheaper and healthier to make. Cheers to health and frugality!

The best thing that I’ve done for myself and my family and to switch us to a whole foods diet. We buy minimal ultra processed foods. If I do buy something processed I always check the ingredients. If it has more than 5 ingredients I put it back.
I would suggest to watch out for added sugar in your diet. Anything ultra processed will have the bad seed oils and added sugar. Natural bliss has the soybean oil and 4 grams of added sugar. I would avoid that and go for organic heavy whipping cream.
Great video! This will help out someone who is not health conscious and make them aware of all the chemicals we put in our bodies.

coffee creamer? Closest it's been to a cow is loaded on a truck driving past a dairy farm! I buy heavy whipping cream. It lasts in the fridge, and it's versatile. I use it in my coffee with 1 tsp sugar or some Nesquick or homemade chocolate syrup for a 10oz mug. Mix it with milk for half & half, I'm always making pan sauces for sauteed meat, no need for whipped topping since cream, little sugar, drops of vanilla and a stick blender is all you need. Maple syrup is a great flavoring & sweetener. Try it on vanilla ice cream for a treat. Canned biscuits, rolls etc have a nasty aftertaste. I keep buttermilk and make drop biscuits (ATK recipe) but I'm usually cooking for just myself. So, Pillsbury frozen biscuits work well when I only want a couple. They taste more like homemade, are baked fresh and I don't waste any. Now, my Kroger does sell marinated meat like pork tenderloin in vacuum bags. I buy when on sale, pop in the freezer for a quick meal. Otherwise I season and marinate things myself using my vacuum sealer - awesome tool. Buy meat on sale, seal and freeze.

I wish you had a question and answer .page.
My question is about the steam setting and the sterilization setting.
Are they basically the same? I think I saw you mention the steam setting for something. I check my instant pot and it doesn't have steam setting but it does have the sterilization setting,
Beings I'm not concerned about sterilization, what can that set be used for instead.

I prefer name brand cereal because it usually tastes better to me. But I only buy it when it's on sale. The same for chips for me, too. And I'll buy these items at my grocery store instead of Walmart, because the grocery store has the sales, and I can use store coupons, too.
Another item that I only use is real butter. I stopped using the tubs of margarine many years ago and went back to real butter, when I heard what the ingredients were in margarine, and other non-butter products. I don't like eating plastic. Lol
I've also tried to do better about reading the ingredients on most of the food items that I buy, and do try to avoid the high fructose corn syrup if possible. I have not bought syrup or bbq sauce in a long time because of that. Same with ketchup. I use the natural kind without HFCS, and real sugar instead.

Sorry, I'm an editor, so I'm a little nitpicky. Self-rising flour isn't really one ingredient in the context of comparing your recipe to the ingredient list on a tube of biscuit dough. It'd read more like cream and Enriched Bleached Flour (Wheat Flour, Niacin, Iron, Thiamin Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Leavening (Baking Soda, Sodium Aluminum Phosphate, Monocalcium Phosphate), Salt, Calcium Sulfate. And that's only if you're buying the brand name flour.

  • @TracyKMainwaring

I'm so with you on the coffee creamer. In Quebec, we even had a hard time finding 10% cream without a lot of extras ("cooking cream"!). Also, baked items! It's not a treat when you think of what you're fueling your body with.
My daughter worked in a grocery store, cutting up fruits and veggies and making salads and fruit cups. They do NOT look for the produce they can't sell. Most of it is ordered specifically for the "salad" bar.
I also don't buy reduced fat products. Naturally occurring fats do not cause weight gain when part of a diet with little non-processed foods. Fat doesn't raise insulin, which is the driver behind fat storage. It's super important for brain health!
I rarely buy juice of any type. Too much sugar even in unsweetened juice.
I try really hard to avoid corn syrup, HFCS (glucose-fructose in Canada), and canola, corn and soybean oils. So that eliminated a lot of processed foods, but I value my health!

  • @cindywise3307
    @cindywise3307 10 месяцев назад

I tried just doing "sugar free" coffee flavors for a while...until I read the ingredients and saw at LEAST 4 different sugars in it under different names. ALWAYS read the ingredients. It is best to go back to the basics and do not use processed foods. They are actually dangerous to consume and do not provide the nutrients you would get from unprocessed foods you prepare from scratch. High fructose corn syrup is one of the worst ingredients you can have. Beware of that one especially! Even the fresh meats you get can be loaded with chemicals. It is hard to buy anything these days that doesn't have them in there. It will cost more to get the ones that are 'organic' or meats that say 'grass fed' or 'range free'. But those should be better for you. No promises! Thanks for the very informative video.
