I'm going to post this on a few different DA-related videos here on YT, not to fuckin' impress or annoy anyone but because one never knows who out there---including the surviving members of the band---might read this. Loved this band. Saw them at least a handful of times. Lorna Donley (RIP), Dave Thomas on guitar, Gaylene Goudreau on guitar and a female drummer whose name I don't remember. I think this was their "classic" short-lived lineup. I remember Dave and Gaylene each played blonde Telecasters and one or both of them had put a few band band-aids on the guitars to cover up nicks in the wood. Funny! Lorna lived behind Sterch's pub on Lincoln Ave., Gaylene cut my hair a few times and I traveled with Dave to NYC. He was visiting Gaylene there after she split DA to be part of the band Bag People, which included my friend Algis Kizys (1981, maybe?) Rough loft on Broadway in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Scary back area then. Man, what memories...
DA! Was so ahead of its time. Further, I have very rarely seen any woman as beautiful as Lorna. I could go on and on... I hope she is playing sweet music in heaven.
@AcidBath Spa and Resort Immediately heard a touch of the early Bsnchees in Dark Rooms! Like you just know they were listening to Siouxsie and the Banshees! 😃 😂
North side of Chicago, early 80's, with the old train cars. Loyola stop? Next to the fabled Club COD, where Naked Raygun was an opener for national acts like Dead Kennedys and Bad Brains, and the Granada Theater, where Gary Numan played during his Telekon tour. Ghosts and memories, like this band and this video.
Da were an amazing band that make all these geriatric, self-important "You Weren't There" marginally talented North Side narcissists all look like amateurs. And all due respect to FNFilms, Da are not legends. They've been obscured by the likes of "Da Effigies" (so seminal, swoon!) and that triumphant well hung dude who croaked not too long ago, among others. Lorna had a beautiful voice, and was a commanding stage presence with that Rickenbacker bass she played with precision and grace. I met Lorna and her then boyfriend, WZRD honcho Terry What's His Face (nasty piece of work) a few times back in '81-'82, and again at a party in '86,when she was starting to look gaunt and frail. We had a nice talk about actual musical stuff and that was the last I ever saw or heard of this Beautiful Lady/Frightened Child. RIP Lorna Donley, gone but not forgotten.
If you weren't yet born, the experimental tail-end 70s - early 80s came out of having VERY big shoes to fill. We weren't that far removed from the awesome hippie revolution, but corporate rock and repetitive disco had gone stale and focused only sales sales sales. Especially pre-MTV the music had caught the spark again, but the establishment did NOT want this music experimentation to happen, probably because it threatened the money grab. This stuff was seen by them as not worthy of attention because they didn't think it could make them money $$$
There are at least five subliminal images in the video Next to Nothing. Video: Discovered subliminal images: DA! Next to Nothing (1982): ruclips.net/video/Bdh0K0IaX5U/видео.html
There are two subliminal images in this video, that I noticed. (I thougt it might be some graffiti with eyes when I grasped the first.) The first is at 2:02. But you have to stop the video and move the red point of the time line minuscule bits foreward to find it. It's the face of a scupture that looks like maybe an indian devil, or something. A third eye in the forehead. The second image is at 2:37, and is a womans face. You have to do likevise to find it. (Maybe there are more?)
They only ever released 1 single and 1 EP (which this song is from). Some local label in Chicago released a compilation of demos and other stuff called "Exclamation Point!" a couple years ago, though: it's all really good.
Look up "Lonely in Your Nightmare" from 1982 Duran Duran. It's from around the same time and also is very modern looking. Black and White tends to have a timeless quality.
Sorry if i offend anyone but i really tried to get into this band because when i 1st saw them on youtube I thought they were a cool early 80's newave band that somehow through time i overlooked BUT boy was i wrong, i do NOT like punk rock of any kind & i was really disappointed because i was hoping i had found another early 80's newave gem....... but no. Sorry punk lovers but this kind of music is pure racket to me.......PURE RACKET !!!!!!
Dunno, these guys are more art-damaged stuff, like Television, Wire, or early Cure. No-wave, perhaps? They're an outlier to punk, related by time frame but separated by a cleaner sound and an austere aesthetic. The absence of synths and resistance to pop hooks may be throwing you off in your quest for "cool".

I've put miniatures of the two subliminal images on my web page. It's a great video, and the images make it even more interesting.
Shame these guys were forgotten so easily, somehow I ended up stumbling upon them. Great to see my city produced these guys, amazing sound.
RIP Lorna. Thank you so much for posting this. I found DA! recently, I am not a child of the 80s, and fell in love with the music
similar to NYC's Bush Tetras
So.good..okok

Way ahead of their time! So good

Is the video genuine, it looks remarkably "modern" for 1982? Great songs + visuals btw...
yes, shot in 1982 for the release of their 12" EP.

This isn't punk, Einstein.

How did you end up down this rabbit hole if youre not into arty post punk? smh
DA! ruled, to bad there isnt much out there by them.
No need for Your pointless opinion.
Post-punk is the contemplative/ introspective person's New Wave. If you can't feel it, then I guess it's not for you.
