- Marv Levy's 1978 Chiefs didn't pile up wins, but they did accrue many yards on the ground. With a series of good ballcarriers, a decent offensive line, and lacking just about everything else, Levy pulled out this relic in order to keep the Chiefs competitive. Despite having a losing record, the Wing T was effective, piling up the third most rushing yards in NFL history (and second most in 1978, behind the New England Patriots).

In this week's video, we'll be taking a look at one of the true oddities in NFL history: the 1978 Chiefs. In Marv Levy's first year as coach, the Chiefs had some decent runners, and OK line, and terrible receivers, quarterbacks, and defenders. So in an attempt to keep his defense off of the field (and out of the hands of his own quarterback), Levy installed the Wing T.
While initially considered a joke or a gimmick by some, the old-fashioned offense was effective. While the Chiefs were still held back by the limitations of the rest of the team, the ground game was historically good. With the Wing-T's trademark misdirection and fake-outs, the Chiefs' opponents were constantly trying to guess who had the ball. They are still the third most prolific ground-gaining team in NFL history, despite not having a single player you've ever heard of.
As has become the norm, I took the time to color correct everything (the original footage is always washed out) and re-time the plays. Hopefully, it looks as if the players are moving in real time, rather than slow-motion. As always, I hope that you enjoyed the video. What player or team would you like to see spotlighted next?

Yes, Levy installed the offense for ball control purposes because all the Chiefs' great defensive players were gone or retired by 1978 except Emmitt Thomas who retired after this season

@M P yea lot's of wing t concepts have worked there way into spread college and high school games because of the spacing and the if then thought process.
kenny simpson has some great stuff on the gun T he has turned the wing t into an RPO based offense. He's done great in the high school ranks
ppl think it's just a power run offense when in reality it's much more of a beautiful offense than that. Tubby had some pretty high flying offenses at delaware with Bill V and rich gannon, you can also throw it literally 1 2 or 3 times if you want if the other team can't stop the run. My high school had a legendary coach that ran the wing t in the 80s and he came back in the late 90s-2010 he won 3 state championships 2 in the 80s and 1 in 02 this was 4A ball in georgia in 02 not sure how the classifications worked back in the 80s.
Perhaps. We ran the wing-t in highschool, and I loved it. Playing guard in the wing t was so much fun.
Our city HS team runs it. Had good success through 2017, then team ripped off a 41 game winning streak, ultimately winning the state championship 3 years in a row. The problem as I saw it was the coach staying with it when the team for smaller and had a lot less speed backs. When he called pass plays, it was incredibly successful, but he called so few and was working a scheme that didn't match his athletes. His own son was QB in 2021 and could absolutely pass, yet coach still called few pass plays.

Not really an oddity as far as offenses being run in the NFL. "NEAR" and "Far" with a wing strong or weak was common for a lot of teams including and most Notably the Raiders ran out of these formations. The Cowboys' Shotgun offense was more of an oddity at the time than this.
Bum's Oilers used the T down by the goal line so defenses couldn't key on Earl Campbell

@@PockyCandy not that you were gone, but you arrived with a vengeance. I watched a lot of football over the years I've been watching since the early 1980s as a little kid but I knew absolutely nothing about this short-lived running era that you just aired. Thank you.
@@ianmiles8635 I've lost interest in making Classic Tailback videos, as RUclips has been overrun with many in-game highlights of runningbacks and other players in general. In 2015, finding in-game highlights of players was difficult. For modern players, it was JustBombsProductions making highlight videos. But in terms of older players, there was next to nothing.
Nowadays, there's more than enough channels making videos like that. And I've almost run out of good, old-time college running backs to make videos too. So I'll be focusing on NFL, NBA, and maybe even soccer.
