I've enhanced the NBC broadcast of the 1978 Week 12 Seahawks at Chiefs game. This recording wasn't the greatest - the color was really washed-out and the picture very drab. It also wasn't sharp and thus detail suffers. I ran it through Topaz to upscale it, double the framerate, denoise, and sharpen it up a bit. I then used Resolve to majorly inject color back into the picture. See before/after shots -- imgbox.com/g/ERaLIfpez1 -- it still won't be the prettiest game you ever see, but it's much better now. Note that there are audio glitches and drop-outs from time to time throughout the broadcast. My thanks to romelovesdan for providing the DVD files for this project
Thanks Nick. FYI - I use the FREE version of Resolve. They have a paid Studio version for $295, but the free version does about 98% of what the paid does. So that saves you money right there. Topaz of course is pricey, but every couple months or so they seem to have discount sales of 20% or more, and I think around Black Friday/XMAS they might even have a half-off sale. As for how to do things, Resolve is the most complicated if you really want to do things right. For contrast/color adjustment I usually will start with just a simple auto-balance (press 'B' on the keyboard - different shots will produce different balances, so you need to find a shot that makes the film look good overall). Once I do that I will fine-tune with manual adjustments to values such as Temp, Tint, Hue, Lift, Gamma, Gain, Saturation, or Highlights, creating a Node for each change so that I can piece things together one-by-one and observe each change in detail. If needed I also will adjust the Red/Green/Blue values in the RGB Mixer. Using the Parade color scope to observe just how much Red/Green/Blue is in the picture is essential to see what is actually going on, as oftentimes your eyes can deceive you from seeing, for example, too much of a color in a shot. That's the gist. I've been working with Resolve for several months now. It's just a learning process and you just get a 'feel' for it after a while. There are plenty of RUclips color-grade tutorials out there to check out.
I upgraded my PC after 9 long years back in January and would have just gotten the new version of the old video editing software I'd been using since 2015 (Magix Movie Edit Pro). Luckily I found that they discontinued that and it forced me to look for a new software. Came across Resolve, which is Hollywood professional grade software, and was FLOORED to learn there was a free version. My old software was absolute garbage compared to Resolve. Talk about a happy accident. These enhanced games wouldn't have been possible without the new PC, Topaz, and of course Resolve.
Fun fact: Tom Ryther, who was the reporter for the segment about the Browns equipment manager, went back to Minnesota soon after this. He had worked in that market from 1971 to 1978. He returned to the Minneapolis market with the NBC affiliate and stayed until 1991 when station KARE refused to renew his contract. Ryther sued, alleging age discrimination (he was 53) and won, getting damages of 1.2 million dollars.
These games are just wonderful. This was when I started watching football as a kid, and I remember many of these players, if not the games. And the announcers were outstanding. Thank you for posting these games!
I used to love Jim Zorn, Steve Largent, and some other legendary Seahawks players from those days. Being in the midwest we sometimes would get a West coast team's game which I used to love watching 👀! Back then the broadcasts were so much better. Both the pregame and postgame telecasts, as well as the actual show. Now there's so much fluff and gimmicky 💩crap💩! The 70's was a much better and a far more essential broadcast.
Chuck Cusick who was featured in the opening story was equipment manager of the Browns at the time. He later rose to the level of Vice President of NFL operations
This game was played on the same day as the Eagles-Giants "Miracle in the Meadowlands", and the day before Earl Campbell's epic MNF game vs the Dolphins.
On a somber note the first reports of the Jonestown Massacre happened on this Sunday. CBS had a special report at half of the late games as they had the doubleheader.
Boy, if that game wasn't the ultimate example of our futility between 1975-88. That ending...yowza. This is why we Chiefs fans deserve all the good things that are happening today. I still did enjoy this a lot. Love all your content, especially Chiefs games.
The pattern I've picked up on with these vintage NFL telecasts is with the production pacing when compared to the current fare: It was at an almost leisurely manner pace back in the 1970s; unlike the current era of televised NFL games where the production/announcing seemingly is intense, trying too-hard to figuratively force-feed the viewers with its stepped-up pace with on-screen graphics and announcing styles. I watched the 1979 NFC playoff game last night on this same YT channel, Bucs vs Eagles, and while it was a close game, the moderate way the telecast was produced and announced made it a relaxing viewing experience.
I was probably about 8 years old when this game was played. Back then the Chiefs were not very good. And NFL Rules back then was if your team had a home game. It had to be sold out 72 hours within game time. Or it couldn't be shown locally. Attendance was around 35,000 for this game. Which was normal until Martyball came in 89. So it's great for me now to see this in it's entirety and see how different the games were back then. Thank you so much for bringing back the old school!!! Also should do more NBA and MLB games.
I'd love to do more basketball games from the early 70's, but don't currently have any more. I also only have a few 1979 baseball games. I'll need someone to step forward and provide me with DVD transfers of said games, just like a few people have done with football.
Levy was already in his mid 50s when he got the Chiefs job and after 1 season...turned that franchise around. A 3-6 blip on the radar in the weird 1982 year did him in...but KC had a good thing going with Levy at the helm there after the bad Paul Wiggin years. Jack Rudnay starting C of the Chiefs went to 4 Pro Bowls. Doesn't often get mentioned nowadays but was one of the most solid, steady reliable centers in the NFL throughout the 70s. Dave Brown of Seattle another quality player that deserves to be remembered
Watched a few of the Seahawks games you have, this is the first one wherein Steve Raible actually caught a pass. Good thing he had that degree in Communications from Ga. Tech to fall back on. Went on to a good career in broadcasting, both the radio voice of the Seahawks on KIRO, 710 AM and the weeknight news anchor on CBS affiliate KIRO-TV, channel 7. Seeing Marv Levy out there coaching the Chiefs to a major losing record seems odd because I equate him with the Bills team that won four consecutive AFC titles (and lost each ensuing Super Bowl.)
1:37.39 Wesley “Sky” Walker touchdown. As an eight year old kid in Minnesota, he was my favorite receiver. Seemed to me to be the best receiver in the league at catching a bomb over his shoulder in stride as he did here. As I recall, he was blind in one eye. What a talent!
Love Efrin Herrera’s gigantic shoulder pads. You didn’t see many kickers wearing lineman’s shoulder pads, unless, like Lou Groza, the were in fact lineman.
Everybody under the age of 45, look at the masculinity and toughness of the players on every play in the 1970s. It is completely different from today's football. There is no true toughness in modern football, and real hard tackling has become non-existent.
The first few years of the Seahawks were fun to watch because they were an expansion team and didn't really have much to lose. So, you'd have fake field goals where Eferan Herrera would blow by the place holder and then go out for a catch to make a first down.
6:55 The ad break going from NFL Football to Mickey Mouse to "Greatest Heroes of the Bible" might be the most American thing I've ever seen. Not to sound preachy but nothing has been sacred for a long time. BTW why was NBC doing a Mickey Mouse tribute show? Didn't ABC always have the T.V. rights to Disney?

This was before Marv had killed some innocent rabbits 🐇!!
This is what the NFL Network should have been doing years ago. Thank you for what you do.
Yes I totally agree with you.

He had worked at KSTP(then the NBC station and his departure was acrimonious) Part of the reason he left Cleveland for family reasons.
I appreciate you restoring these games and posting them more than you’ll ever know. Thank you!!
Thanks for restoring a great AFC matchup! If only the Seahawks could have split with the Chargers & Broncos...
These games are just wonderful. This was when I started watching football as a kid, and I remember many of these players, if not the games. And the announcers were outstanding.

Thanks for the Seahawk game! Been a Seahawks fan since 1986

one of the most memorable few days in 1970s NFL!
On a somber note the first reports of the Jonestown Massacre happened on this Sunday. CBS had a special report at half of the late games as they had the doubleheader.
Always good to see a NBC/AFC game brought back to life. Especially with an example of their different approach to Pregame programming.
I don't believe I ever saw Ed Podolak broadcasting a game. What a great, and versatile player he was.
I know sideburns were a thing in the 70’s but Marv Albert was taking up a few levels.
Sweetness had a brother who played in the NFL. Lean something new every day. Cool.
Marv Albert’s hair is quite something.
Bring back those old Seahawks uniforms loved the colors.
they are for our thursday night game
@@jasonfrederick6564 I'm not getting Amazon prime so guess I won't be watching. Should be on regular tv unbelievable.

1:37:30 Awesome Jet Highlight with Wesley Walker
Wow this game was played 45 years ago, and marv albert has recently retired and I think Paul McGuire too 😮
Great work. Thanks for sharing.
Marv Albert and Paul Maguire were a team in the 70s? I remember them two going games together in the 90s.
They were great together
Marv was teamed with Bill Parcells at one point between coaching gigs in the 90s also
@@66KIMBLE Marv and Paul both had a beautiful head of hair.
They were the number two nbc broadcaster team back in the 90
Love Efrin Herrera’s gigantic shoulder pads. You didn’t see many kickers wearing lineman’s shoulder pads, unless, like Lou Groza, the were in fact lineman.
A very young marv Albert, paul Maguire, and mike adamle

Even the KC cheerleaders were made of tougher stuff back then, bare-legged with skirts and just a jacket to stay warm.
Chiefs Punter Big "Z" Zenon Andrusyshyn dropped into the NFL for one year. He's a 70's Legend in the CFL.
Marv Albert’s hair! What in the world?
If he moves too fast it’s liable to jump off and crawl away.
Looks like a giant muskrat jumped on his head😮
No rumor that Betty White gave Marv hell for that thing on his head.

Eddie Payton is the brother of Walter Payton!
I like the nbc theme
Awesome!! 👍🏽 Thanks 😊
You mean Marv starting working for nbc in the 70s as well why I thought he started in was the late 80s-90s
Yep. Marv was doing this in addition to his being the radio PBP for the Knicks and Rangers AND anchoring sports on WNBC-TV (Channel 4) in New York.
Any rumor Marv had the same toupee???
They can turn the going to KC music down anytime. NBC was such a Juco v NFL Today.
Seattle should go back to the AFC, it seemed a more natural fit, than the NFC.
1:43:02 Paul Maguire and Jack Albert 😂
I love Kansas city offense.

Disney shows started out on ABC in the 50's but moved to NBC in 1961 to take advantage of their color broadcasting
Only 1 minute of commercials ?? Nice
They were edited out of the original source files already. I would've left them in had they still been there.
Where are the Kansas City fans? Looks like an empty stadium? Why are the fans there so bad?
32 degrees, wind chill of 22, and a 2-9 record probably kept the fans from coming out.
My sentiments exactly!! When you’re 9-2 the fans will come out in a monsoon!!
Marv Levy is the same coach who brought the K-Gun offense!!! His first year after 6 years at Montreal in the CFL!
He ran the Wing-T that year in part to keep a bad defense off the field as much as possible.
Is this Marv’s real hair or was he wearing roadkill back then???
