  • In this video I repair a faulty Playstation that's been collecting dust in a box for well over a year. To be honest I never got the motivation to fix it seeing as I have 6 other fully working Playstation's already (yes, you read that right 6 of them) to be fair I was just keeping it around for spare parts for my other systems just in case any of them broke down. Now I finally decided it's time to have a look and see what the fault was and if I could repair it.

Your explanation at the end was spot on to how two units I just acquired were. They had these funky springs in the eject door area, and at first I thought some spring had broke and that has how they ended up, but after thinking about it (and then seeing your video), I know exactly what was happening, and promptly took that crap out. They are otherwise in good working order and will be getting PSNee chips installed soon.

Nice explanation of what is going on and what you did! Very much enjoyed this video. Essential information for all of us Retrogamers that want to continue gaming on the original hardware!

Thanks for the kind words Chris, It turned out to be a simple blown fuse in the end and not the motor driver IC I'd originally thought; however, I'll need to keep my eye on that motor drive IC as I suspect it's been weakened over time because of the idiot that was disk swopping. It's working fine now but it's more susceptible to failure because of this. I wish I'd known the idiot who owned this system before me he'd be walking with a limp because of the disk swapping; I can't believe people still do it.

I feel attacked (>_>) I admit I've done my fair share of Disk Swapping in the past (instead of a Mod Chip I literally used my dad's Diabetic Needles to hold the button down in combination with the original Action Replay from Datel that could go at the back of the Fat Ps1). I was 12...
Seriously thinking about repairing an old SCPH-7501 I got at a Goodwill (a type of Thrift store in the US) and giving it the treatment you did in the video.
Thanks for the informative video! You just got an extra Sub!

So I know this is a pretty old video but I'm attempting to repair one close like it, where did you get a schematic?! I can't seem to find one for a 1001 PU-8 board anywhere??

Did you know Element14 is what's left of Acorn? Nice viddy buddy. You have a cool DnB MC voice... so you should do that too.I'd like to buy some 'Pine Wood' if possible? lolHow much was the fuse? The ironic thing is (I know what you're going to say in reply I think hah) is you can pick up a working original PS1 for £5 at the moment :) I like your mini-bollocking at the end too hahah

Thanks fella, A single fuse is 75p but heres the catch you can only buy them in quantities of 10 so £7.50. yes, i could of got a fully working one for £5 but where's the fun in that.

Actually the clicking at 4:56 must be the gear next to the smaller motor on the drive that grinds on the gear of the motor (cause the motor is just sitting still not moving easily, at least for all of my PS1 drives). A more gentle way of doing it would be turning the gears right next to the motor with a spudger or something. I you don't take care the teeth of the gear can break off and cause a very inaccurate laser caddy movement :)

Hello, i have a scph-9002 ps1 and i tried a repaired lazer on it but it killed my ps1. Its working but not giving a response when laser switch pressed. I found a blown fuse and replaced it but it didnt make any difference. I just taked back the fuse and sorted the pads and lazer head moved. Do you have any idea what could be the problem?

Hello, nice video, I like this video 'cuz is the only one that I had seen that explain more causes and not only said "Clean laser".
Well the thing is that I trying to fix my PlayStation and don't know where is the problem, I already checked all the fuses, I tried 3 differents laser lens drive and nothing and I already unsoldered the mod chip.
The problem is that the Ps1 doesn't read discs, but the laser and the motor kind of works, the motor will spindle only 2 times and the laser will turn on but doesn't track the disc and then turn off. I think that the problem is the IC723 or the IC722 but I don't know how to check them.
It's very weird because the system was functioning properly and then, puff, no more games.
    Any ideas?

In my case I have a 5502 that just turns the CDs 2 times with little effort (tried new whole laser drive module does the same thing ), it could be the BA6392FP chip that could have been burnt? because there is a brownish area just under it at the other side of the mother board
