- Syracuse Police Chief Joe Cecile and Onondaga County Sheriff Toby Shelley spoke at the Oncenter in Syracuse during a press conference about their fallen officers gunned down Sunday, April 14, 2024, in Salina, NY when a traffic stop turned into a chase and a shootout resulted in their deaths.
Prayers to their families. 🙏 This is a terrible tragedy. 😢
Why
I went to college in Syracuse back in the 70’s. It’s a tight knit community. This is So sad….RIP.
Why?
Two people went to work and didn’t come home to their families. Heartbroken and heart wrenching is an understatement. And they were murdered protecting their community. Rest Easy Brothers.
They went after a "suspicious vehicle." Suspicious is not a crime. They paid the ultimate price for it. We need to educate our officers. This is what happens when you don't honor your oath. Only 13 officers were off'd by gunfire this year. A delivery drivers job is statistically more dangerous.

Out of the only 41 officers that died this year, 13 were by gunfire. And not all of those were from someone else's gun. The statistics are interesting.
In 2022, the leading cause of death to law enforcement was covid according to their website. But almost always, the leading cause of death is vehicle accidents.
Now this department sort of has an idea of what families go through when the boys in blue destroy a life of a civilian. That number is always far greater than when an officer gets dropped.
