    I grew up in Albany, went to college in Rochester, and currently live in Buffalo. This seems more or less accurate to me.

    It's a badge of honor that the Simpsons went after upstate, think of all the rust belt that is jealously wishing it was them (PA, OH, IN, MI, IL, and on and on). Syracuse was mentioned, but maybe one of the writers is from there, so it got a pass.

    Sleep in a city that never wakes, that's pretty much every area in Upstate. They do obsess over wing sauce out here, and young people claim "early retirement," by going on disability. I was recently a victim of violence out here and reached my breaking point. Upstate NY is terrible, absolutely terrible.

    i live in upstate New York, the only places I like to visit upstate is probably old forge for the snowmobiling or lake placid for the food and stuff, other than that, there is really nothing here

    Upstate New York (including western New York) > New York City
    How's that?
    We in Upstate NY are completely different from NYC (you will notice differences in culture & whatnot).
    At least here, Homer's acknowledging that there's more to the state of New York than just New York City.
    We have suburbs, farmland, forests (including Allegany National Forest), 2 of the Great Lakes & Niagara Falls.
    Oh & yes, we usually do get a lot of snow in Winter.

    I live in the City. But have been to Syracuse, Albany, Rochester and Buffalo. Syracuse and Albany seemed fine. But Buffalo was a dump and Rochester seemed like an abandoned city. It's sad, cross the border into Canada, and it's beautiful.

      I'm from NY City as well and I've been to all of those places also and I can confirm as well. Although they do have some nice places as well like Williamsville and Amherst in Western NY. They forgot to mention other disgusting shithole dumps like Newburgh and Poughkeepsie, also Peekskill.

    There ain't nothing up here anymore. Everyone drives to see either the Adirondack, Buffalo/finger lakes, nyc, or Niagara.
    There used to be resorts as far as the eye could see. Mineral water springs. Now there's only a few floundering cheesy motels left and all that's up here is just a bunch of people waiting for something interesting to happen. Ever since the 1960s when the cruise ship industry became more popular we have been suffering, forgotten. Empty husks of bottling plants and dilapidated resorts are the only reminder left of what this place once looked like. What it is supposed to look like.

    As someone who lives in a small farming town 20 minutes from Broadway in saratoga...yeah...school up here talks about how important the "battle of saratoga" was in the revolution yet nobody in other states learned about it

      And up in the Lake Champlain area it was all about how important Fort Ticonderoga was. Saratoga would get mentioned, but a ton of emphasis was put on how the Green Mountain Boys took Fort Ticonderoga from the British by surprise; also the fort’s importance in the Seven Years War, and how it was originally French and called Carillon… We also got a lot about Forts St. Frederic and Crown Point, which were located a little ways north.
