I finally popped my Nirvana cherry! I knew Kurt Cobain's story but never actually listened to the band! I've been curious for so long and have just never done it, so I'm diving in with Lithium.

I’m sorry if this sounds weird I was watching your a day in the life video from a couple years ago and you said you were from a small town in Missouri I am also from Missouri and currently live here was curious if your hometown was close to mine
@MentalAmanda
Do "Been a Son", "Paper Cuts", "Scoff", "D7", "Sappy", "I Hate Myself And Want To Die", “Stain”, "Curmudgeon", “Mr. Moustache”, “Swap Meet”, "Very Ape".......
As for the song, it is about a man who turns to religion after the death of his girlfriend as a way to avoid suicide.
There is a song by evanescence of the same name. That actually about the drug Lithium carbonate I think, I'm unsure. But it's the medicine used to treat bipolar disorder
@@christamichelleortloff2195 Ironically, Lithium is chemically the same as Meth....
That was a prank to MTV because Kurt wanted to play Rape me but MTV executives said no. So he only played the first riff of the song.
The thing is that song is about other bands stealing his sound
@@Shawn-mo6dhit is about rape, its an anti rape song.
@@Abdulla7_ you could be right but your not. It's about artist stealing music
@@Shawn-mo6dhno its about the media
@@Abdulla7_no it’s about the media ! When he went from the under ground to mainstream, he thought that he was being raped for looking inside his life
I can see why Rape Me can be triggering but if it makes it any better Rape Me is an anti-rape song. Kurt was very passionate about women's issues and he was a feminist.
This performance is so iconic. It represents everything that was brilliant about Nirvana. Kurt giving the finger to MTV brass by starting with the first few bars of "Rape Me". Then Krist nearly knocking himself out cold with the bass toss at the end. Kurt messing up his own song by coming in late on the last verse... so brilliant.
i agree :)
but for me it's Territorial Pissing @ Jonathan Ross that captures the essence of Nirvana: they were supposed to play Lithium but instead played Territorial Pissing, smashed their instruments and then leave without saying any words :)

The reason they started destroying their gear at the end was because they had been asking their record label for months for new equipment and they kept getting push back. They knew the big boss at the record label was going to be at this show and they new ne had the checkbook, so they did it to force him to buy them new gear. And the bass player would normally do a trick where he threw his bass like 10 feet in the air and catch it, but when he looked up, he was blinded by one of the lights and couldn't see it and it gave him a concussion, they went to find him after he ran off and they found him drinking champagne with Brian May from Queen.
That happened way earlier, this performance had nothing to do with it, Nirvana just liked to cap off their shows by destroying equipment
@@tsg_frank5829 I'm just retelling what Dave Grohl said in an interview
Kurt’s been dead for thirty years and his music still sounds fresh to me.
Agree
I like what Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid told Rolling Stone magazine: "My favorite song on Nevermind was 'Lithium.' Kurt Cobain tapped into something in the culture that nobody had given a voice to before: passionate ambivalence: 'I'm so ugly, but that's OK 'cause so are you.' He captured the idea of having incredibly powerful feelings about not having feelings."
Kurt was authentic. He never compromised for anyone, and he laid bare his soul in his songs and his stage performances like few other rock stars ever did. He resonates so much with people because he was a complete iconoclast in a profession rampant with greed, imitation and conformity. He stood apart from that and that is why people love whim so much to this day.
An old friend of mine who used worked for Marshall at the time (a guitar amp company) and was working that show. They had provided amps that night, and he was backstage watching the show.
He was in charge of over seeing their amps. When Curt started destroying the amp he began freaking out.
Someone from MTV grabbed him and told him that there was nothing he could do and just smiled at him.
he said that that just amp sat around broken at Marshall after that.
Don’t know what ultimately became of it.
Also worth mentioning that Lithium is a common treatment for bipolar disorder.
Duh
Kurt’s death was the first celebrity death that had a real impact on me. I heard about it on the radio and left work. MTV News, Kurt Loder gave it full & great coverage. Ironic with the riff between the band and MTV. More than 30 years now. RIP Kurt.
Kurt Cobain was a fan of this outsider artist/ musician "Daniel Johnston" that i think you would find fascinating.
Check out his song " Walking the Cow" and/or " Story of an Artist"
A true genuine brilliant and vulnerable human being
SOOOO much to dissect
Krist got a gash on his head and was a bit dazed, but he recovered fine.
They went to go find him after he ran off and they found him drinking champagne with Brian May from Queen
Amanda, when you have time, check out Nirvana's "unplugged" mtv performance
"A generation of youth were looking for something new, and this little trio from the pacific northwest seemingly came out of nowhere and an entire generation rose up and hailed nirvana as being the real, raw thing, an anointed the bands frontman kurt cobain their musical Messiah. But kurt never asked to be the king, and the head that wore that crown would never rest easy."
-MTV GRUNGE SPECIAL
Agree!
The IQ of this woman is kinda intimidating, and her heart is galactic size
Definitely
We all miss Kurt!!! The last great Rockstar!!!
Amanda. Thank you for this reaction.
Kurt Cobain was a tortured genius, whose artistic vision spearheaded a complete paradigm shift in Rock music in the early 1990s.
If you are truly interested in analyzing Nirvana music from a mental health standpoint, then I strongly recommend the song “You know you’re right.” Released years after either his suicide or demise, (depending who you ask) this was the very last song Kurt Cobain ever recorded.
It may well be his most introspective song as well. Written as his marriage to Courtney Love was falling apart.
He was a genius, and he was always in pain due to a chronic illness he suffered from, which he self medicated with hard drugs, cocaine, heroin and whatnot.
But he is often misrepresented as this tragic, insightful and sorrowful character, which couldn't be farther from the truth. Kurt Cobain was GOOFY as hell! He was funny, irreverent, he pulled pranks, he had an almost child-like demeanor, as per the people who spent a lot of time around him.
He had a beautiful soul and the world is a lesser place since he passed.
Definitely going to have to check that out!
He didn’t lose his life. He took it. From himself and his daughter and all of us.
You’d like their song Milk It off their final album.
WOW!!!!😮😮😮😮 It's almost as if their drummer looks like the lead singer from Foo Fighters!!! 😮😮😮😮😮 ☺️☺️☺️😉😉😉
Listen to all apologies that's the greatest song with a more polished performance on MTV unplugged, it's a perfect song about kurts yearning to feel peace
Hey Amanda... how is it going. Always happy to see new reactions. Love that someone has similar experience and tastes as me. Keep up the amazing work.
Love you haven't heard this...for many of us in the 90s this was synonymous with the first half of that decade...song was everywhere :)
So many stories behind this performance.
They were the first live band I saw & omg I was hooked on gigs after that lol. It was the only time they came to Australia
This is my 3rd favorite Nirvana song. In this order
Smells like teen spirit
About a girl
Lithium
The bassist threw his bass into the air and knocked himself out. No permanent injury though.
His bass or his amps or stage speakers didnt work anymore (one ofit i guess)because they had put it all to the max and instaead of pretending he did his bass toss that worked many times before but i guess they drank something and due to this and all the stage lights he couldnt see his bass early enough to catch it thats more or less the story if i remember right😂
Nirvana's one of my favorite bands, especially the MTV Unplugged in New York album. I've probably played that more than any other album. Kurt Cobain was definitely one of those poetic style singers.
Nirvana....forever ❤. I was 16, Kurt killed himself and I remember the day very clear. Till this day I wasnt really into Nirvana. I was at school and after last lesson, on the ground of our schoolyard someone droped hundreds of little chits of paper with the letters "Kurt Cobain is dead".
We have the Atlantic between us,so I'm not stalking you. Your channel makes me "happy"!
That's what I waited for.. explanation of Nirvana and Kurtz... great job.
I'm diagnosed schizophrenic. I have more friends in my head than people you have ever met
Cuckoo

Best reaction I've seen to this, nice one! X
Even though I could, well maybe, look up the meaning of this song, I choose not to, as I find it far more fascinating not knowing what it's about. The 2-chord back and forth guitar part during "I'm not gonna crack" is oddly hypnotic to me, and simultaneously bizarre given the lyrical content going on. As for the performance, Kurt slightly deviates some of the lyrics in the live version from the studio version. Why he did this, I can't really say. Boredom? His sense of humor? Could have been both. The older I get, the more strange it gets seeing a young Dave Grohl of what's now known as the Foo Fighters on the drums back in those days. This man is one of the hardest hitters in the history of heavy hitters. Krist Novoselic (the bassist) I'm sure wasn't planning on injuring himself; he was sidelined for a lil bit, but was fine all in all. He spoke about it in an interview a few times. I'm curious though; could it be possible that Kurt wrote these lyrics from a third-person perspective?
am with you, I like not knowing. I sometimes look it up after, but typically I only learn the intended meaning if someone else tells me. Now that you mention the back and forth guitar, you're right, it does have a trance like effect. Happy to hear the bass player was okay. You know me, I will worry about fictional characters on shows, people I don't know and apparently injuries from several decades ago. HAHA. Kurt writing the lyrics from third person is an interesting theory!
In my head, heart and soul, Nirvana and Pearl Jam was, and still is, most influential bands on my young age. I am from Serbia 🇷🇸, 49 young 😊,and i love your reaction!❤ My suggestion is: Pearl Jam...Dark Matter...
Awesome reaction and commentary!!!1
I like your shirt ❤
School wasn't canceled for us. But they did make an announcement over the loudspeaker (high school) that anyone affected could see the school guidance councilor/therapist-person. It was such a big deal that even the grownups knew it. It was basically explained that this generations John Lennon had just died, and that clued the faculty in to just how impactful this death was to a LOT of kids.
Thanks for the info!
Quick question, do you have the lyrics on hand as you're watching? I ask cause I'm terrible at picking up lyrics the first time I hear a song, it's not where my brain focuses
Only for music like Lorna Shore and the heavier stuff.
Some Pearl Jam songs to maybe look into; "Indifference", "Release" and "Immortality".
“Hi Axel, hi Axel, hi Axel!” What a band and performance. Don’t make them like that these days.
RIP Kurdt 😢🤗🙏
PLEASE DO MORE NIRVANA!!!!!❤❤❤ Most people I see react to Kurt Cobain and Nirvana have this stigma around them that you don't have. One song I'd recommend is All Apologies. It's one of my favs. Or You Know You're Right, which was the last song Kurt recorded.
Dave grohl of the Foo Fighters was the drummer
Nirvana fue uno de los precursores principales de la musica Grunge larga vida a Kurt🎉🎉❤❤❤
You know he changed some of the lyrics in this performance
Fun Fact: The best thing that Nirvana came out with was the Foo Fighters.
Kurt Cobain has had such a profound impact on my life. I know he was far from perfect and that he had flaws, but he couldn't handle bullshit and he was truly seeking out purity and raw passion in a world where everything is fake and commodified. You should watch some interviews with him. He was a really charismatic, at times funny, at times intense person/ Also, Nirvana has so many other great songs.
Awesome video.
Kurt genuinely thought he was ugly.
do more nirvana. i wasn't expecting such an insighful reaction to kurts music :)
It would be awesome if you react to dumb, all apologies, something in the way, heart shaped box, pennyroyal tea, you know you're right
Lounge Act, Drain You, Stay Away, Breed are some really good Nirvana songs.
I've tried suicide about a dozen times. I don't consider myself a survivor. More like a failure.
I'm really sorry you're feeling this way. Please remember that your struggles don't define you. The fact that you're still here shows incredible strength. There are people who care about you and resources that can help. You're not a failure; you're someone who deserves support and compassion.
When do you hear Mother Mother?
"Rather dead than be cool"
The Hi Axl Hi Axl part is missing😂😂
RIP Kurt Cobain. This is one of my favorite songs by nirvana. You should check out smells like teen spirit and come as you are next! ❤ thanks for your videos and all you do 😊
❤❤
The shaved head line was not the original line, he adlibbed it in.
The words were slightly changed.
Drummer seems talented
Yeah, looks like he could have a future in the music biz...
😄

There was a lot of drama at this award show. Kurt and Axl Rose were feuding. There's a story of Kurt spitting on what he thought was Axl's piano, and it ended up being Elton John's. Axl liked Nirvana, and wanted then to tour with them. Nirvana did not like what Guns 'N Roses stood for. Axl seems to have taken offense, and Courtney seems to just keep adding fuel to the fire.
Some of the lyrics were altered/out of order compared to the studio version.
@MentalAmanda
Great reaction! I don't know if this is the place to suggest another song to react to, but I would love to hear what you would have to say about another song by The Who, titled "Behind Blue Eyes." It is very much on topic for your channel, I think.
I’ve found this Channel today. I’ve seen a couple of videos of yours. Love your energy and sincere spirit. Try “The Light” by Disturbed. Trust me, you’ll be touched by its lyrics.
Vaquero Setsual
Ai mori and Violet Orlandi have a cover of R*pe Me that is as brill9ant as it is disturbing....they take the meaning of the song and amp it up to infinity!!!!!!
who? what?
could you react to where did you sleep last night by nirvana on mtv unplugged
💛🌏💛
Please do Pearl Jam - "Black" MTV Unplugged and also the video for Alive
Please react to sometimes you’re the hammer sometimes you’re the nail by A Day To Remember and All Fucked Up please
vodka helps me sleep
real
Relying on alcohol to sleep can lead to several significant risks. While alcohol may initially help you fall asleep faster, it disrupts the sleep cycle by interfering with the REM (rapid eye movement) stage, which is crucial for restorative sleep. This disruption can result in poor sleep quality, leading to feelings of fatigue and grogginess the next day. Over time, dependence on alcohol to sleep can develop, increasing the risk of alcohol abuse and addiction. Additionally, regular alcohol use can have harmful effects on physical health, including liver damage, heart problems, and an increased risk of certain cancers. It can also exacerbate mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. These risks highlight the importance of finding healthier and safer ways to address sleep problems, such as practicing good sleep hygiene, engaging in relaxation techniques, or seeking professional medical advice.
Kurt would prob want to get high after hearing this analysis
Ooooo is that why Britney Spears shaved her hair off ? Ha ha ha 😅😮 Ryan Barron
Floyd the Barber
Lol Five whole minutes trying to explain the first verse of Lithium, a song which in words of Kurt Cobain has no sense, no explanation. Sorry for the laughs, I grew up with Nirvana and we didn't care about the lyrics too much. 😂😂😂
The song is actually anti rape and kurt was a well known feminist
Please react...EMINEM MOCKINGBIRD🔥🔥👍
Amanda, also, I think this is r@pe me, not lithium.
No better way to suck all of the life out of someone's art than to analyze it.But,OK.It means whatever it means to whomever it be that hears it.And he that wrote it,knows the true meaning.
My channel is here to break the stigma of mental health. I use music videos suggested by subscribers to start discussions. That includes analyzing.
They played the beginning just to piss off mtv
I remember the rock station back home playing a parody of Eric Clapton's Cocaine, with Cobain replacing cocaine. The song was about Kurt offing himself. It was very dark considering.
That was on the East Coast, and most of us didn't like grunge. I still don't, with the exception of Alice in Chains. I saw AIC open for Ozzy in 1990 or 91. Layne had his entire leg in a cast and was rolling around in a wheelchair singing. I was impressed.
I'll listen to Nirvana on the radio, but to this day, I change the station or turn off the radio completely when Pearl Jam is played.
You've never listened to Nirvana?😢
I have nothing in common with you.
You're reading way too much into it.
Just listen 😮
An old lady using pink headphone with cat ears like a teenager is so cringe and weird...
Never listened to Nirvana!? You lost me
90s *NSync girl here from Missouri.
Oh. My. God. You are missing the forest for the trees. Have you never had fun? Have you never gone to a party? Anayzing these lyrics for the sort of poetic sense you're looking for completely destroys every fibre of the quilt Kurt is building. You have managed to take a joke, explain it to the audience piece by piece, and completely missed the fact that you've destroyed the magic.
Worst RUclips Reaction Ever.
This chick thinks she's a female Dr Phil. RUclips really needs to stop people who are clueless. There might be someone who actually needs help that stumbles across this garbage.
This channel is here to break the stigma of mental health. I am sorry it didn't suit you, but this reaction is to start conversation on mental health, not listening to magic in music.
Bogus headband what a stupid product pure spam
Too much forced analyzing mostly meaningless lyrics, hilarious to hear you babbling nonsense though.
The whole point of this channel is to open conversations about mental health using music. I am happy you are not needing such help.
