when i cook, people always ask me "where did you learn to cook like this?", and I never say Chef John, but, in my heart, i say a little prayer for you. Thanks, CJ. You are awesome.
When I told my husband that I was making Rice-A-Roni from scratch (to which I followed your ingredients to the tee) he gave me a puzzled look and then laughed. He thought I was making a joke. Well, I made it and it is awesomeness! Just like I remember from my childhood, only better. Well done John. You have made my husband and I very happy with your recipes. Thank you John!
I have made this so many times and have never commented and decided it's time. Seriously, this is the absolute best! I can't have gluten due to an allergy so I don't add in the pasta and still comes out incredible! My husband love it too! Thank you Chef John for always making dinner great! I have tried many of the other dinner recipes you have and have never been disappointed!
Whe I lived as a jung girl many years ago in the US I loved rice-a-roni. I just finished making your home made Rice - Ah - Roni. Absolutely fabulous!!! Much better than the original. I was a blt lazy, so I used 1/8 Teaspoons of onion powder instead of fresh onions and I also added 1/8 Teaspoon of garlic powder. I would use less garlic powder next time. Thank you Chef John and greetings from Germany
Made it with most of the spices called on the recipe but I added MSG. Other than this variation I followed the recipe. Absolutely delicious. I should say, I have been cooking rice with the liquid ratio that Chef John indicated for years.
The reason I like Chef John so much is because he shows me how to prepare the favorites of my childhood without having to eat 29 different chemicals and additives too. Thank you Chef!
I have made this and it is awesome! I finsh it with greek yogurt (dolop on top while serving). An Armenian friend of mine makes this with the dollop of yougurt and a few toasted almond slivers. Thats for taking the time Sir!!!
Man, I LOVE this guy's personality, voice, and commentary! I have so many of his videos favorited xD Also, the last bit where he gives jabs to Rice-A-Roni and everything after that was fantastic xD
I've made this dish multiple times and each time I do my family goes nuts over it. Easy and tasty. By the way, Chef John is most definitely the Bob Ross of cooking.
So excited to see this recipe! I went to Washington to visit my boyfriend's family and his grandma made rice pilaf one night with dinner. My boyfriend was raving about how good it was so naturally I asked about the recipe only to find out she uses a box mix. Now I can show him the real thing!
*HEY CHEF* it has nothing to do with this video, but *because of you* , I was inspired at the grocery store yesterday and bought some sofrito.. mixed it in some ground hamburg meat, added some dried parsley and stuffed squash with it. Wow, it was DELICIOUS! So thanks for the inspiration!!
Made this last night and my American born wife absolutely loved it, according to her, it was how she remembered it. We live in Australia and over here it was known as 'Rice a Riso' . Thanks John, it was very tasty!
mrs Kaftanian created this in san francisco who was a friend of the family who owned golden grain company she is Armenian and this is an Armenian pilaf dish. This American Life radio show did a nice segment on this. Thanks Chef John !
One of my families favorite recipes. I’ve been making this for years, occasionally I add more vegetables or /and meat. This might be the first video of food wishes I found since then we like most of his recipes.
Pre-empting your receipt of the Cease and Desist letter.... I went ahead and downloaded this video to my pc. Thanks for the heads up! ;-)) Love you, Chef John!
BLESS YOU CHEF!!!!! I toast my Orzo pasta all the time and there you go and toast the pasta I love for the great dish you have here.... BE STILL MY HEART!!!!!!!!
Thank you for posting this today, Chef John. I impulse bought a beautiful piece of salmon at the market today and was wondering what to make alongside. This will be excellent!
I made this dish over the weekend only I tripled the recipe. I had a good sized crowd over and this was a great addition to my dinner. Spiral cut ham and a beef rib roast, dinner was a hit. Many thanks Chef John.
First there was Emeril Lagasse then Alton Brown Good Eats but you my man are up far the best chef yet.. You are a very informative you know your stuff.Keep it going I love it.... After all you are my new guy..... That puts a twinkle in My eye....
The best time to watch chef John's channel is when you've already cooked yourself something nice, so you don't get sad or hungry and can already have an idea for what to cook next!
I lived in San Francisco for 15 years. My wife's name was Verona, nicked named Roni. When we were married everyone stated calling her "Ries-A-Roni! Cute.
Thanks chef John for another great dish. You have been my go to guy when I need to try something new. All the dishes I tried from you have been keepers.
Chef John, you're a mind reader! Yesterday I watched your old rice pilaf video and wondered why you hadn't made a rice-a-roni recipe. I would make this if all the grocery stores weren't closed for Hurricane Harvey. And yes I know that my mind is last on your "to read" list, considering that I've watched 200 videos and this is my first time to comment.
Hey Chef I really love your videos, binge watched most if them already I think. I got a request, can you teach us how to cook more healthy stuff as well? Most of the recipes are either 4 different types of carbs, or drowning in butter, oil, fat and accumulated juices (what type of monster leave those out?) By the way thank you for the zabaglione recipe! I made it and it helped me get laaaats of compliments
i really wish we used flavored broth of some kind in things back in the sixties. as i child i loved to help my mom in the kitchen and i was the official rice a ronni maker and salad maker for our family dinners once i was old enough. good memories.
From 1 chef to another. Very tasty dish. I have to mold mine down for my house, but even without the cayenne. It is still very good. I also added the chicken from my chicken broth there at the end & let it simmer in the pot together.
It looks delicious. I make something like this, but use short angel hair spaghetti. I toast it in a pan without oil, so whan cooked it stands out from the rice. The rest is the same. I love rice, and it is so versatil. I even make it with coca cola! With cumin, salt, pepper... delicious. Best wishes...good wishes...Love your recipes always👏👏👏👍👍👍
I've made my own for years now so thank you for your version! :-)) As a kid my sister, friend, and I would make this from the box. After it was cooked we flatten it in the pan and make a perfect peace sign. And you can guess what followed next.. Lol!!!
I just made the rice a roni ( never had it because its not sold in the Netherlands) and served it with bbq turkish kebab( also your recipe) and some tzazik ( my husbands' own recipe) It was delightful, thanks I was looking for an other sidedish for the kebab other than bread.
Come on Chef John you can't tell us you sent a bunch of rice flying out of the pan and then not show us you sending a bunch of rice flying from the pan
You are singularly responsible for getting me addicted to Orzo, so now, of course, I must try this. I'm betting it will be even better with the subtle touch of Jasmine rice.
Hi from Australia 🇦🇺 my mum would by Rice a Riso in a box when we were kids. That was a few decades ago and we can no longer buy it. Yes full of all the bad things but very tasty. Making this tonight wish me luck
Chef John you should do a Cuban beef braise/roast dish called Boliche, most of what you'll find is stuffed ignore that, its pressure cooked in a lime or sour orange sauce. It's delicious, usually served with plantains maduros or tostones, white rice and black beans, and some kind of salad. i think your viewers would enjoy this traditional cuban dish. it's usually made as a center piece for a family get together
Made this tonight and it was sooo good. I use my own homemade chicken stock and it was surprisingly chickeny without having any actual chicken in it lol I could have eaten the entire pan in one sitting
For these types of dishes, I usually substitute Italian sausage for beef. I’m sure this is delish, but the sausage made it great. Having it again tonight.
When he said "we're not going to brown the rice," I got sad. I love the nutty flavour of nicely browned rice. But hey, I could always brown it for my own version of this. :)
Check out the recipe: www.allrecipes.com/Recipe/260509/Rice-Ah-Roni/
There’s a good reason it’s called the “San Francisco Treat!” It comes from the parent company Golden Grain. www.goldengrainpasta.com/our-story/
I know Im kind of randomly asking but does anyone know of a good site to stream new movies online?
@Prince Caden I would suggest Flixzone. You can find it on google =)
@Muhammad Brantley yup, I've been using InstaFlixxer for years myself =)
sometimes i put on chef john videos to help me fall asleep
Emma Owens no joke if I'm having an anxiety attack I sometimes put his videos on. Very soothing voice.
i use the Lord of the Rings audiobooks on RUclips
And then u get hungry instead
Emma Owens
Sometime I put on Chef John videos to help me LIVE MY LIFE.
Emma Owens Yes same here . Soothing voice
The boxed version has been a family favorite for years. Made this tonight and it was infinitely better and the kids devoured it. Thanks Chef John
when i cook, people always ask me "where did you learn to cook like this?", and I never say Chef John, but, in my heart, i say a little prayer for you. Thanks, CJ. You are awesome.
That is so sweet and awesome 👏😁

The reason I like Chef John so much is because he shows me how to prepare the favorites of my childhood without having to eat 29 different chemicals and additives too. Thank you Chef!
Big love from Chef Adam from Yorkshire, England . Live what you do .... big fan .
I have made this and it is awesome! I finsh it with greek yogurt (dolop on top while serving). An Armenian friend of mine makes this with the dollop of yougurt and a few toasted almond slivers. Thats for taking the time Sir!!!

I love his voice and inflections so much.
nobody else ive ever heard uses those oddly timed inflections. its... strange.
I'm probably the only one here who has never had Rice-A-Roni....but this version looks delicious.
MamaMittens I haven't either! So had no idea orzo was in it and I love orzo, so I like this recipe!
id never even heard of it before haha
rice-a-roni is the perfect accompaniment to hamburger helper...wine pairing: mountain dew
Nope. I've never had it either. Going to give this a try though. ☺
Never had it myself. But this looks pretty good.
So excited to see this recipe! I went to Washington to visit my boyfriend's family and his grandma made rice pilaf one night with dinner. My boyfriend was raving about how good it was so naturally I asked about the recipe only to find out she uses a box mix. Now I can show him the real thing!

Made this tonight. It was fantastic and better than the box from what I can remember of it. My kids ate it up.

This was my favorite dish when I was little, and it still is. I can't wait to try this recipe!
I've had a horrible day so now I'm watching a video about rise to help me forget. Thanks Chef
I made this the day it was posted and well more than a dozen times since. Absolutely a crowd pleaser. I replace a bit of the salt with MSG.
From 1 chef to another. Very tasty dish. I have to mold mine down for my house, but even without the cayenne. It is still very good. I also added the chicken from my chicken broth there at the end & let it simmer in the pot together.
You are the king..chef!!😊
I have made this many times. So delicious. I do 1 1/4 broth to rice ratio. Excellent
I regret not having a hundred thumbs up to give. 👍🏻
It looks delicious. I make something like this, but use short angel hair spaghetti. I toast it in a pan without oil, so whan cooked it stands out from the rice. The rest is the same. i love the idea of browning the pasta. Indian dishes often brown lentils before cooking.

Looks tasty, going to be trying this tomorrow.
I've just tried it! It's so delicious! Thank you, chef!
This looks fantastic.

OMGoodness this was good! Followed your recipe to the T. WAY better than the boxed stuff which I haven't made in years. Wish I could leave a photo!
Ahhhh yes the *orginal* San Francisco treat
Chef! Love your stuff, would love to see a Espinacas con Garbanzos video. Been trying to make it myself and can't quite get it right. Thanks so much!!

This looks so delicious! I've always loved Rice-A-Roni, but your homemeade version looks amazing! Definitely trying this one! 👩🏻🍳🍽
I just made this tonight yum, yum, yum.
When he said "we're not going to brown the rice," I got sad. I love the nutty flavour of nicely browned rice. But hey, I could always brown it for my own version of this. :)
