I would have to wonder if the rest of one's attire and demeanor may broadcast more to potential thieves than a watch, especially if a ubiquitous-looking black Sub is more likely to be a fake or 'homage' than genuine. Knew a poor carpenter who wore a black Sub for years, without most knowing what it was as it was entirely beyond his lifestyle or income, so context and your zen ability to wear one without giving off that vibe may matter more.

The judgment portion is what I dislike the most. Coworkers have a super bowl pool for $500 a box and they talk trash about me because I decline to participate. They don't understand that I can afford my watch duo to the fact that I don't wast my money on gambling, drinking, drugs and all the other things they may do. I'm not rich and have to save like most people but when they hear that you have a watch of a certain amount they call you cheap for not buying a box. Trying to explain the watch thing to non watch people can be most taxing. For those of us who do get it, enjoy your watch.

The crime issue is strange, as someone who lives in the part of London with the most scooter crime(Islington/hackney) I’ve seen first hand so many muggings for phones(3 in one week once) and have heard of people being shot, stabbed and squirted with acid for rolexes and APs... it’s changed my attitude to owning some watches a bit, especially since I’ve had a baby daughter. I wouldn’t want to risk anything happening to me or God forbid her while I’m out with her, over a watch(and I’m annoyingly stubborn/aggressive so I worry I would be irresponsible if it happened to me).
Luckily though, I’ve also grown fond of Seikos since selling my last Rolex (GMTc). I now have a sarb035 for work, sbdx017/mm300 for weekends and a 1959 Lord Marvel along with a 1961 Seamaster Deville as dress watches so none of those are likely to attract muggers but I do think you can’t live like a victim too much anyway. Keeping your wits about you, walking with confidence and being assertive has always kept me ok. I’ve had a few aborted attempts where people have cycled up or rode near me before going off for whatever reason.
I’m buying my missus a Cellini or Girard Perregeux instead of a “normal” Rolex partly for this reason. And I got her Bluetooth earphones s she doesn’t walk about with her phone in her hand

Yea I live in Boston, it's like a small new York, I used to have my hands in the streets, got stabbed as a result and I've seen plenty of shootouts. That being said, I would say the key to not getting robbed is not having headphones in, watching over your shoulder constantly, and at least one hand in the pocket. Walk with a little of a gangster walk where you dip everyone once and a while, most people will pick up on it. The minute a robber can't see your hands, he understands he might lose his life, so be aware of the people around you, along with carry some form of protection, have a knife that folds out quickly, recommend something from CRKT on Amazon, bought a $40 pocket knife and boy is it sharp along with it's not spring loaded yet has some gravity mechanism to make the blade flip out rather quickly. Have your knife in your hand as you walk, the minute you see something odd you get ready to fight back, because the truth is a robber doesn't expect a fast reaction, they want to catch you off guard, so the minute someone stops you and they look and feel suspicious, stab first ask questions later. Don't do any talkinf just take initiative and plunge that knife into them and hop into the nearest vehicle. Hope you guys never have to use this information though. I would also say go to the gym, most robbers don't want to deal with someone who's a bigger guy.

I have an Air King 114234 that I wear whenever I get the chance and yes you are right that people automatically think you bought it simply to be able to say you did, which is simply not the case. Pretty much like you said, you there are no words that can make these types of people understand why you like fine watches. I could go on about the brand history, precision, craftsmanship, design, etc, but you will never convince them. You either see it as an art or you see it as simply a clock. Regardless of what people think of the brand, it cannot be argued that a Rolex is one of the highest quality products in the world and they only get better at it. Whether or not they are worth the price is up to the individual. I prefer buying used anyway. One thing is for sure, you don't see people saying "remember when Rolex watches used to be the best?" They still are

Inherited a 40+ year old Submariner from my grandfather. Still a runner, never had it serviced, for the reasons you mentioned. Good example with a patina that comes from daily wear. This thing is bombproof as far as I can tell. The only thing that's missing is the "pearl" on the bezel, and a couple of deepish scratches on the plexiglass. Wouldn't part with it for the world. Great advice from this vid. Bcz it's vintage, many people think it's fake, but it's the real deal.

    • @BarkandJack
      @BarkandJack  6 лет назад +2

That sounds absolutely lovely! Have a good hunt around to see you can find the box and papers. I wouldn't worry about the pearl missing, nearly all vintage watches that have actually been worn have the pearl missing. I like it, a sign of a proper vintage watch that's been worn and loved. If you decide to get the glass changed, make sure you ask for the original one back again. If you ever come to sell it, people like to have all the original parts.

Further to the point about being judged... A few of my mates and some family thought I was nuts for spending 400 quid on my last watch.
I'm going to be treating myself to a BB36 soon so I feel like I'm going to be avoiding talking about cost.
It's not in the same bracket as Rolex for example, but to people who don't look at watches in the same way as me, 2k is outrageous.
Hopefully I can just enjoy my BB without being judged.

Here is a quick fix for everything:
    1. Dont talk about your watches. You think everyone else talks about their expensive stuff?
    2. Do not show off. If you are that kind of person get a fake watch and a life.
    3. If dodgy people notice your watch be cool about it. Say yes its a nice chinese replica. Once I even took my sub off and handed it over to someone and I said it was a fake. He carefully inspected it and said not bad but i have seen better replicas. (ROFL i litterly died). Because i knew it draw his attention and he was going to talk about it with everyone for the rest of his pathetic life.
    4. Buy low level under the radar watches. Screaming watches are for people with poor taste anyway.
    Etc. Etc
    In other words, be smart...

Had mine since 1987 and serviced once in 2015. Bought it new for 1500 USD. Cost of service at authorized ROLEX dealer in the WYNN Resort in Las Vegas was 750 USD. mine is the stainless sub with date. Service cost included replacing the gaskets. Replacing worn jewels, lubrication and pressure test and accuracy test. Thus it took three weeks to get it back due to backlog. The master watchmaker then was Luis osegeurra who explained the process. Basically they disassemble the watch and put it back by hand just like ROLEX did at their Geneva factory when it was first produced. Service included polishing case and bracelet to factory new which I declined. I’m sentimental to all the scratches and blemishes my watch acquired through thirty years of unfailing time keeping. Cry once for the price but it is worth every single penny.

Should be some kind of system where the serials numbers are all logged and if a watch is stolen make it impossible for thieves to resell them. That’s the only way to stamp that out. Oh and cut their hands off if they get caught. Horrible to think of someone being acid attacked for a watch. Lowest form of crime and should be punishable in the most extreme way.

Cool video, the first time I've seen your channel, but a few things. It's my understanding that an XRay will not harm or magnetize a watch. Now taking it off, and putting it in one of those little bins, raises the risk of it getting damage or stolen significantly. Also you said Rolex is the most valuable brand in the world. Obviously not true, but perhaps you were using a little hyperbole for effect? In any event according to Forbes it's the 69th most valuable brand, and technically not even the most valuable watch brand as Cartier is found higher on the list.

    • @BarkandJack
      @BarkandJack  6 лет назад +1

      Hi,
      Thanks for checking it out.
I don't know the technicalities around the airport x-ray machines, all I do know is they are powered by a large electromagnet and a JLC watchmaker told me one of the most common reasons for watches needing a service is the movement becoming magnetised. I did a watchmaking masterclass with JLC and the watchmaker explained how there are so many magnets in the "modern world" that the hairspring can easily become magnetised and then sticks to itself. She said, often the culprit is airport x-ray machines.
With regards to the value of Rolex, apologies for that, I meant to say one of the most valuable brands...
Either way, ranking 69 is pretty damn decent and as companies, Cartier and Rolex aren't exactly comparable.

Hello; you are spot on with all of the issues you have presented. My friend's 5513 Submariner (1972) has encountered each of these concerns. The biggest issue is the part regarding mugging. He has regularly taken his off and hidden it in certain, usually late night, situations. It is a shame to have to feel that way but he has accepted that reality in this world in which we live.

Definitely my favorite watch channel! Just bought my second Rolex.........34mm, blue dial, Oyster Perpetual. Wore my first Rolex for 25 years (Datejust), had it serviced one time when the crown wouldn’t screw down properly and it cost me $600.00 US. It came back perfect, like brand new. I sold that watch in 2012 due to having my right thumb amputated because of melanoma. After six years being cancer free, I was once again able to manipulate a watch and decided to buy another Rolex. For me............there just isn’t any other watch I want to wear. They are beautiful tools, just like my Porsche. Both watch and car are my daily drivers. I’m sure you know what I mean. For those who don’t own either, they just won’t understand what it means to own something so mechanical. And, I no longer try to explain or justify. I just enjoy both for myself, not others. Keep up the great work on your channel. I enjoy it immensely. Happy New Year from another Adrian!

      Wow, thanks so much!!!!
Good work on getting the blue dial OP. The blue is stunning.
Congrats on being cancer free. You certainly deserve the OP for getting over that, and losing your thumb! Rolex and Porsche are two amazing brands. They both really understand how to design beautiful machines. A 1980s Porsche 911 is my dream car, the one with big bug eyes for lights. I love it.
I completely agree with you about people who haven't owned these things not fully understanding the importance. They really are things of beauty.
Thanks so much for your kind words of support, and for taking the time to watch the videos. I'm so humbled that people like yourself take the time to watch them. Wish you a great and healthy 2018.

Jake Roth no they don’t dry out in 5-7 years. Newer oils and lubricants last longer and Rolexes are workhorse watches that go for years. If you want to get your watch serviced regularly that’s fine but if you want to wait till something goes wrong... it will almost certainly work out cheaper.
People have been doing both with regards servicing their watch and it’s silly to state someone is retarded. I’m sure some people think paying strangers hundreds to service a watch that runs fine is retarded.

Wise words mate. Still don't like em (Rolos of course), though I think it's pretty comical really that you could wear a Lange anywhere perhaps even a Patek and a very very small number of people would recognise it. I don't understand the watch stealing thing. It's not that I don't believe it. And I've never been to London or anywhere else in the U.K. But I've worn my Milgauss around different cities in the U.S., generally in the southeast like Atlanta and New Orleans, and I've never felt like someone was going to attack me for it. Granted it's not to most well known Rolex. That's one reason I bought it was because it was understated. I just never felt like it was an issue.
I'm quite certain there are areas of the U.S. where someone could certainly be robbed for a watch. I've just never heard of watch spotters working with thieves like that. Maybe in New York or L.A. where nice watches are more common, I don't know.

Nice to hear someone else saying you dont have to be rockafella to own or enjoy your rolex i spend most days watching these posts and your comments are very seldom heard. Having bought my first sub 5513 in 1984 ive experienced plenty , it dosent have to be vocal just a slight glance of you catching someones eye on your watch then quickly looking away in disdain and then another one looking you up and down but on the whole everything wrapped into one its a true pleasure to walk out with one on your wrist. 2013 got my first pam titainium power reserve blue dial only 200 made of that colour. Got my 36mm bi metal datejust 2yrs ago my first pre owned off my mate who bought it new. And as we speak my yacht master 40mm 904l and rosegold black face is sitting in the safe at prestons because of corona😣😣😣. If your hearts in it your hearts in it. Look at the bulova curv, £200 watch on sale or £600 full retail. But has a accuracy of 10 seconds in a year. Or thered always radio controlled watches

Dealership second user Explorer II, had a while then threads on stem tube stripped. In for repair, Rolex serviced as well, £145.00. A while later winding stem snapped, back into dealer and sent again to Rolex, again they also insisted in doing a service, thicker winding stem fitted than the one the watch came with, £165.00, sadly not long after stem broke again, back to dealer, was told I would be charged for repair and service again. Decided not now, since then in its box in a drawer. Rolex may be a great brand, but in my experience it has hidden costs. Also of note the time keeping accuracy of my particular watch was never that great. Bull a Accutron, hummers, better value, and Vostock diver in my experience better time keepers and value as a watch to wear, without the danger of getting mugged for it. I hear the haters now, but that is my experience folks.

All of these watches I have owned from day one, only the Sea-Dweller stopped working (broken main spring). I used a independent watch maker in Tampa, FL; the name of the establishment is SWC, Swiss Watch Center. I have been very happy with the watch maker's (Shaant) expertise and workmanship.

From the looks of it all 3 watches in the pictures were fake.
