@@maxbolton5227 in all honesty if gaudreau was traded at deadline I still see Calgary remaining in 1st place, and beating Dallas in the 1st round.. the results would’ve literally been the same, maybe even better based on the return for gaudreau

This trade probably could’ve been a 1 for 1 trade with Huberdeau and Tkachuk. If not that then Florida might have had to add a prospect or late round pick at most. The fact that Florida included Weegar AND a 1st is shocking. Weegar is one of the best 2-way defenseman in the league. What were they thinking?

Maybe could've been close to 1 for 1 if the deal included Huberdeau signing an extension. Also Weegar one of the best 2-way defencemen? Have you watched Florida games recently? He's a massive defensive liability.

In the playoffs, Florida wasn't that great overall, but weegar made some very costly mistakes that led to opposing goals. In the Washington series and Tampa series. Still puts up great pts on a stacked offensive team tho. We'll see how he does in calgary

If they don’t resign its still a great trade. Easily could be moved at the deadline especially since they both are on very good contracts. Huberdeau like 5 mil and weegar 3 so easy to move if they dont wanna resign and they will get you a huge haul back not to mention the first round pick. Easy W for the flames. florida got a lot worse after losing, huberdeau, weegar, marchment, giroux, chiarot i mean come on now flames fleeced them and could easily have a better season!

I honestly after Johnny hockey lesving and then Chucky wanted out the fans were devasted, so hopefully this makes it up to them, I’m super curious how will the flames do next season.
Doesnt really matter since 1 good season aint winning a cup. And they most likely won't resign there and will look for a cup favourite like toronro, colorado, tampa, maybe edmonton if the goalie plays well, florida, even new york and carolina are good options. Calgary is a middle team in the playoffs. That's why they lost to edmonton last year. Sinxe gaudreu and tkachuk doesnt compare with draisaitl and mcdavid at all.
I don't have them making the playoffs. Even with the addition of Weegar.....not enough depth in my opinion...Pacific already has EDM and LA as locks in my opinion.... Nsh,Col,Stl and Min as locks..... not alot of wiggle room here......

Tkachuk for Huberdeau and Weegar would have been fair. The first and a prospect definitely tips the trade in Calgary's favor.

@@ajiboy1919 Age and contract situations play a huge role in a player's trade value. Both Weegar and Huberdeau are players in their late 20s on the last year of their contracts, and are looking for that big contract which will take them all the way to their mid/late thirties. Tkachuk on the other is now locked long term through his prime at a relatively reasonable cap hit. With how poorly both Huberdeau and Weegar performed in the playoffs, it's not really a surprise that Florida wanted to switch things up with their roster. With all that said, obviously the return Calgary was able to get for Tkachuk is absolutely brilliant.

Didn't realize Weegar was a right shot D who played on the left...that's very rare. You mainly find left shot D who play on the right because there are way lefties.

There has definitely been other trades that involved two 100 point players. First one that comes to mind is the Gretzky trade to LA. Jimmy Carson who they got back had a 107 point season before he got traded.
I think Carson had 107 points the very next season after he got traded

I think it’s a low chance Huberdeau doesn’t resign considering he waived a NMC to get traded their and Calgary wouldn’t want a player that doesn’t stay after their two stars left. However, Weegar I’m not too sure about but even without Weegar this trade is still a fleece for the flames. Flames get a guy that is arguably better than Tkachuk along with a good prospect, a first round pick which has the chance to turn into a star player like Tkachuk, as well as at least one year of a elite defenseman for a guy that only put up over 80 points one time is such a steal. Even if Weegar signs and Huberdeau leaves I still think flames win considering Weegar is an elite defenseman and you still get a year of a really good player, and then the draft picks and prospects can make up for the loss of Huberdeau after a season.

It looks like a big win for Calgary right now but who knows down the line. that is what is so exciting. As a Panther, I am sad to see Huby go but he's been here a long time now. Barkov with Tkachuk is gonna be insane though. the conditional 1st rounder is likely a late 1st round pick, Weegar isn't as big of a loss as people might think.
The only trades that I can think of that come close are the duchene deal and Dubois for laine and Roslovic, but I don't think they compare
Jumbo joe is the only trade that is somewhat comparable
Neither of those players come close to Tlachuk and Huberdeau, this has to be the biggest trade of the 2000s honestly

I would say Weber for subban was bigger since both had been star defenseman for multiple seasons where as Tkachuk has only really broken out as a ppg player this season. Also you can argue the Karlsson trade was bigger since he was one of the best dman in the league at the time and in turn the sens get future stars in Stutzle and Norris

Weegar+Huberdeau does not equal cup for Calgary. I think the play is trading Huberdeau for max value because an 8 year extension won’t age well. Weegar is good so include a D like Tanev or Kylington in a Huberdeau trade to get back currents and futures. Ideal situation for Calgary to maxout value

imo Laine and Dubois don't even compare to this trade. It might've seemed bigger because it happened during the season and this happened during the off-season.

If Huberdeau resigns it'd be 50/50. Getting Weegar and a 1st too is amazing work
Huberdeau might be the better player offensively, but Tkachuk is younger and plays a much more well rounded game.
Never go by stats alone. Many fans don't watch out of market hockey. Panthers know huby and weeger and last years run helped inflate their stats. Zito took advantage and fleeced Calgary. Huby and weeger are good. But they are far from the players Calgary though they were last year. It's not about the stats, it's about the players mental abilities and how they play.
Amazing trade on the flames part really brings an upside to the flames this trade is 11 out of 10 trade flames really did smash this with that 1st juts blew my mind I mean it’s too 10 protected(via the hockey guy he said if it does end up being top 10 the flames should end up getting the 2026 1st round pick anyway so the flames smashed this trade out of the park it’s also still possible we sign kadri lolllllllllll what do you think about this trade?

I sort of understand this trade from calgarys perspective. Kick the can down the road to the trade deadline I guess. I’d be looking at futures though as they are worse this year than last and I don’t believe they are actual contenders and should probably do either a rebuild or refresh. Don’t sign huberdeau, will cost too much for a player of his age

Nobody that has ever watched weegar play, would say he is better than ekblad🤣. There's a reason he was dropped to the second pairing for the last month of the year, and the playoffs. He cost them several games in a president trophy season, as well as the playoffs.

I think CGY fleeced them pretty hard. I dont think tkachuk is that good of a player tbh. But if they kept tkachuk they weren't really a contender, fringe playoff team at best. But now I think they're looking good, could still sign a couple depth pieces. Wouldn't be surprise if they're still number 1 or 2 in the pacific. Markstrom will steal them a couple games especially with the D he has in front of him.
Calgary trades a real playoff difference maker for 2 who goes invisible in the playoffs. Panthers made this trade simply to improve their playoff performance.

Florida's thought process was we got an opportunity to deal 2 players with inflated stats. Which team knows Florida hockey the least and would be suckered into judging only by stats while helping us become an even better playoff team.
