  • In this video we're checking out Tom Browne. We had no idea, even, that he was the trumpet player, for this. We know nothing about him. This should be interesting. Enjoy!

Hey guys !! Tom Browne is a jazz trumpet player. The bass was played by jazz great Marcus Miller. The piano (my favorite part) was played by Dave Grusin, another jazz great. The song was a tribute to Jamaica Queens, NY where Tom Browne grew up. The conversation throughout was reminiscent of the the chatter from the neighborhood. The female vocalist was Toni Smith (who also co-wrote the song). I also originally thought it was Chaka Khan (another of my favorite singers...) !!
This is one of my favorite songs because it combines funk, jazz, and r&b. The musicianship is top notch.and Toni's vocals are amazing----thus the comparison to Chaka Khan.

Here is a live video of them performing. Tom Browne is the Trumpet player and the singer is Tommasina Angelina "Toni", she recently passed. Tom went on to becoming an airline pilot. He did a mini-documentary went he went to visit the gang many years later, but sadly, many had died and some were hooked on drugs. Toni was in the documentary which you can watch here: ruclips.net/video/y_5iCs20VMg/видео.htmlsi=n6r9URCLfsvb0yoZ

Funkin' was such a major hit on the r and b charts that people sadly ignored to rest of the album and the album "Love Approach" is really great but I could never find it on CD.

'Wikka Wrap' by the Evasions was based on Tom Browne's track 'Thighs High'.

@@djdrwatson The chorus was ''The Wikka Wrap, is what it is... gotta get interviews'' over the Funkin' For Jamaica chorus riff and replacing the words.

This is the type of music that made me dislike going to Night Clubs, an endless stream of funk/dance music to the extent that you couldn't tell when one song became another. This became worse when Techno arrived.

I know what you mean but I think you're being a bit harsh. This is great funk track with a little bit of rap when rap was fun! 😎
