Nothing beats recommending someone a book and see em enjoy it
Absolutely!
Tempted as though I was to recommend TWoT to a friend who has never ever in his life read a book from beginning to end... His choice of book was The Lord of The Rings, and he was winging at page 26 of how they haven't even left The Shire.... I was mollified in my enthusiasm to recommend The Wheel of Time.
@@mgntstr Thing is I had the same issue with LotR but I'm eight books into Wheel of Time, so it could just be Tolkien's writing style, not the slowness.
The eye of the worlds cover art is AMAZING I remember my grandpa reading these when I was a kid and just imagining fantastic adventures inside. I’m currently on book 4 and Matt is becoming my favourite character by far
I am reading this series for the first time now(on book 6), after years of putting it off. I wish I hadn't waited. It really is fantastic, and I can't stop reading. Would love to see you do some more WoT content on your channel.
I am glad you are enjoying it, Alex! I might do some more!
I read them years ago, but I remember getting neck sore because I couldn't stop reading.
I read some of those books in just 3 days. Luckily for my neck, not all books where finished at the time and sometimes I had to wait till the next book became available at the library.
A Shadow Rising is my favorite book of the first half. Lord of Chaos has a great ending, but I have realized that most of that book is quite a drag. In the back half, my favorite books are the Brandon Sanderson books. They just bring the story to its conclusion and satisfy a lot of plot lines and wish lists (character reunions, epic moments, etc.) from throughout the series.
I so agree with her. Almost every problem these characters find themselves in could have been avoided if they communicated with each other. So many assumptions are made by them about everything and everyone around them.
Symptom of the American "I am the main character" syndrome. Self important dimwits.
Yup, there is more false tension than your average romantic comedy... I'm on book 11, and still, nobody knows Perrin talks to wolves.
LoaV: "My wife has read the first 7 books of the Wheel of Time."
Also LoaV: "You know what I really hate about WoT? The Slog (books 8-10). Are you going to continue with the series?"
👀
Haha 🤣 It will be interesting to see if she will enjoy the slog!
The slog isn't so bad when you skip the descriptions. ;)
Memory of light is my fav. That entire book is like helms deep, minas tirith and the battle at the black gate all rolled into one lol. I also loved demandred's reverse gandalf at helms deep scene :)
I think my favorite book is when Rand cleansed saidin, I think it's Winter's Heart. But I also really love the book where Nynaeve rallies border men so Lan doesn't go to fight alone; I don't remember which book it is right now, but I'm going thru the series again (on book 10 now). I really like this video, thanks!
I just finished a CoS and I'm now entering the Slog! Wish me good luck! ☺️ P.S I love Cadsuane and Mat!
This is a wonderful Video :-) Your lady is a beauty - enjoy the rest of the ride!!!!!!!!!! There is no story like this one upon completion. My fave on current re-read has been Lord of Chaos tbh, and i've just hit Memory of Light again. Usually Towers of Midnight is my fave, but this itme round that comes in no 2 lol. Johann your poker face is top notch mate, nice.
It's not a slog.
It's a filter.
If you can't get through it, you don't deserve the ending.
You could read Anna Karenina, War and Peace, Crime and Punishment and The Possesed and still have read less words than the entire wheel of time series. That’s insane.
Read what now? Pulp Fiction!?@@aethylwulfeiii6502
Hi 👋 it’s nice to see ur wife on ur channel, I’ve read first 6 books liking the big epic fantasy books!! Happy reading to you!! 😊⚔️👋
Glad you enjoyed it! Happy reading ☺️
Wheel of Time will likely be my next mega-series. I'm doing Malazan right now and will want a bit of a break after, but I do want to get to these if for nothing other than the historical significance. Also, from page 1 Eguane is an amazing character (I started book 1 at one point). Glad to hear that she's still loved after 7 books.
Well done on tackling Malazan! I hope you will enjoy Wheel of Time if you pick it up!
I look forward to her thoughts when she finishes it!
I am excited for that as well!
I stopped reading at book 3 a couple years back as wasn't overly enjoying alot of it but been tempted to go back and start from the beginning lately
Interesting video! I am glad your wife is having a good time with the books, though I will keep my fingers crossed for her that she won't end up hating Crossroads of Twilight as much as you do, lol.
Definitely agree with her on the characterwork and character interactions being one of the weakest parts of the series, that's exactly what's hindering me from becoming fully invested. Been trying to start book 6 for a year now, but I just can't find the motivation, oops.
Anyway, I loved hearing both of your guys thoughts! Great video 🥰
Thank you! I am excited to hear her thoughts on the slog haha!
You definitely need to be in the mood for it when you decide to continue!
I've been reading the Licanius trilogy. One of the reviews they say if you love wheel of time you will like this series. I like this trilogy so have been thinking of reading wheel of time next.
Great idea, but the questions you posed afterwards missed the mark imo. Should've gone with: does it hold up to the required reading of an English lit course? What do you prefer in the classic lit? Which do you prefer to read for pleasure?
Stuff like that
For someone who tends a farm without any modern conveniences Rand's bod is somewhat lackluster to that cover art. One does not simply plant crops and keep sheep.
This was a great video but if you are going to try to warn people about spoilers, I would suggest taking the spoilers out of the titles of the chapters. I was just spoiled trying to avoid being spoiled :(
I loved the series! Im not sure I gave a special book, but many scenes from most of the bookd where fabolous. End of book 3, Nynaeve fight in the museum, cleansing of magic, the sitter boning. Most scenes with Aviendha haha
When you asked if Moraine was dead, something dawned on me. I don't know how, but I think she may have infiltrated the forsaken.
I seem to share a lot of similar opinions with your wife!
I love how avid fans of the series can get such different things out of it. I would be interested to see if her opinions on Egwene and Nynaeve flip by the end of the series.
My favorite books are in no particular order:
The shadow rising
Knife of Dreams
Memory of light
Mat and Rand are my favorite characters followed closely by Nynaeve and Moraine.
Also the slog didn’t bother me except for Crossroads of Twilight. I wouldn’t consider it terrible just poorly paced and bland. I binged the series after release rather than reading them as released though.
I guess my favorite was the last book, since that's the one I rated highest, but I didn't think WoT was great. There were too many issues, the slog being just one of them. However, I do think there were some great scenes. And I loved almost everything with Mat in it, especially in later books.
The last book is great! I agree that there are many issues with this series. However, I just love it!
Favorite is probably Gathering Storm but Knife of Dreams and Lord of Chaos are both heavy contenders.
Lord of Chaos and Gathering Storm were my faves, both because of Rand
There is no slog !! besides the intricate descriptions of clothing, curtains, chairs, hats, hairpieces, etc , etc, etc, etc !!
Vividly psychadelic chapters.
You're crazy. I just read book 10. It's almost 100% pointless.
Books are great. It actually explains the cosmology, universe, taveren.
Me (who's on book 6 for the first time): LoaV, how could Moiraine be your favorite character if she really dies in book 5?
Also me (who's read all of the books of GoT that are out): Has Eddard Stark as one of (if not) my favorite GoT characters.

Perrin Aybara and Nynaeve Al'Meara were my Favorite characters
One day - one, fabled day - I will find someone who also hated Lord of Chaos 😂. The ending of that book was the only redeeming quality of it for me; I absolutely couldn't stand the rest of it. A Crown of Swords, on the other hand, was one of my favorites! Such a shift for so many characters. Still, I'd agree with you overall - Crossroads of Twilight is the weakest in the series. I still like it more than Lord of Chaos, if for no other reason than that it's a fraction of the length.
Regardless, it's great to hear that your wife is enjoying the series. I finished my own read through last year (on Christmas Day I finished A Memory of Light!) and it was such a highlight to the year.
Interesting! The ending of Lord of Chaos is one of my favourite scenes from the series. I lovedi t!
Yeah the only good thing about Crossroads of Twilight is that it is relatively short haha! I am glad you got through the series and enjoyedi it. Thank you for watching!
I don't HATE Lord of Chaos. But it is one of my least favorites of the series (as of Knife of Dreams, which I'm reading now). The middle of LoC kinda slogged more than the slog itself at times.
Crossroads of Twilight is so bad, that it feels like the filler episode of the series, where nothing much happens. My favourite book of the series is The Towers of Midnight. A recent reveal by Brandon Sanderson makes me wonder if he has Jordan's estate's approval to write another Wheel of Time novel. My favourite character is Perrin, I feel like he has the best fight scenes, and storylines of all the other characters. I named my tomcat after Hopper. The Amazon TV series sucks, and I don't hold any hope for the second season.
Recent subscriber! Would love to see more WoT content!
Thank you for subscribing! That will definitely happen!
Favourite books in the series are The Gathering Storm and Lord of Chaos, the latter having one of the best endings I have ever read
I'm somewhat close to done with Lord of Chaos, and it is my favorite book so far.
I remember loving Lord of Chaos the most 👌
My wife I also reading the Wheel of Time after enjoying the TV show
I gave up on the books at book 4 and didn't like the show
But really glad she's reading a epic fantasy series
Damn book 4 is one strongest book in the series!
@@kerrissedai6857 I think I would have liked Wheel of Time when I was younger
I've been reading fantasy for over 20 years and it didn't feel like something I'd appreciate
I've just finished Malazan Book of the Fallen and it's been much more my cup of tea and highly recommend it
How long did it take her to read the 7 books?
She started approx. one year ago! She has read lots of books in between :)
@@libraryofaviking Damn I wish she also had Goodreads
First
No WoT book grew on me more on my reread than Crown of Swords. I agree with your wife that the female characters are awesome in it, but also Mat is absolutely hysterical and just perfect in it. It's still not even close to my favorite book in the series, but it went from like second to worst to middle ground, easily.
I have heard so many great things about rereading the slog! Glad you enjoyed Crown of Swords!
@@libraryofaviking Crossroads of Twilight will never be vindicated, even on a reread. Haha. But all the others were better, IMHO.
One of Jordan’s persistent themes is that the characters only have partial knowledge of the whole context of the battle against the dark One. Lack of communication is a key feature to demonstrate this. You can’t ask a question if you don’t know what you don’t know, biases abound, and form the net of miss trust so I marvel at this fact of the story that people don’t ask questions that’s how the story moves, based upon guesses and ignorance and biases.
The problem of communication is even worse with dark friends, shadow spawn and the forsaken. the distrust is so prevalent and the competition so toxic and they’re partial knowledge so arrogantly paraded it is keystone of their weakness.
So our protagonists have the better of it because at least while they can be ignorant, mistrustful and biased they can also love and sacrifice.
Egwene is my love-hate character perhaps being born in the 50s as a man, she just really rubs me the wrong way, but I also admire her immensely, particularly after she meets the Aiel and learns to master white tower politics in Salidar.
In this world to be Aes Sedai, is to have some, if not overwhelming distrust of men, Egwen avoids misandry, but many Aes Sedai, do not, especially the reds.
I love Rand, Perrin, and Matt. Like his men in battle, I would probably follow Matt anywhere.
Rand has the most interesting character arc, since literally all of existence, depends upon him working out his cosmological purpose. and his conflict / competition with Egwene will be central to the story eventually see Saidin v Saidar.
the most annoying character for me by far is Nyneave. yet she too develops, and by book 6 or seven I really begin to appreciate her commitment and devotion to her “boys” and how she works out her enmities with other Aes Sedai. She even begins to develop a deeper capacity for self reflection. I was often moved by her journey.
I read the whole series this year after watching the show last winter, I was very inspired to read. I sense something not quite right in the show particularly around the treatment of the of the boys. I loved Moraine cast as Rosamond pike so now they read the books I’m curious to see if my evaluation of the show goes downwards when I saw it I would’ve given it at four but retrospectively I feel like it’s closer to a 2 1/2.
Yeah, and it should also be taken into account that the main characters are still in puberty in the first books. So they are bound to not communicate very well.
During my initial read, Crossroads of Twilight was just a mess for me. I didn't really think the slog was a slog on the whole anyway. I didn't care much for the whole Elayne / Andor succession piece and Masema was annoying, but I did enjoy the slog books. I will say, I started the books in 1999 and so I had to wait to read was Crossroads of Twilight to be released. Due to that, I was consuming the books at a frantic pace. That could likely have contributed to my opinion. That said, when I reread or listen to the audiobooks now, the overall story is great and I don't feel the slog there either.
I didn’t notice the slog when listening to the audiobooks during my 1.5 hr commute to work.
I keep hearing that people don't notice the slog on a reread! That's interesting! Thank you for watching 😄
Thanks for the spoiler warnings. Reading book 3 now.
No worries! Happy reading :)
I've read each book as it was released and several times since them. Jordan's writing style can be a burden in places, it's like reading twenty pages of contractual fine print. As for the show? No! I won't even connect it to the books but hey, it's just my opinion.
It is your bigoted anti brown washing opinion and it is valid.
Urrrgh... Egwene and they have an AI oil painting of the Actor!
Vandalizing culture in action.
You forgot to add book 7 to the slog. It absolutely belongs in it.
Also, 7 and 8 are both worse than 10. There, I said it.
Honestly, I'm pained to admit that most of Wheel of Time feel like a slog to me. The only reason I'll be able to finish it is that I'm listening to the audiobook at 2x speed and then reading chapter summaries online to fill in the gaps where I was distracted.
I can't say I really enjoyed any of the books individually, but the Wheel of Time experience, as a whole, is still worth it.
Yeah, it just wasn't worth it for me...I got through 6 or 7 books but each one was just "ok" at best and being so long I felt like I'd spend my time better going after the million other books I have on my tbr. Especially since I apparently didn't even make it to the "slog"...it all felt pretty sloggy and I didn't really like a majority of the characters...lots of whining and complaining from everyone.
@@PreppinShootinLivin I actually like the characters, the plot, and the world. This is a sin, I know, but I just don't like Jordan's writing :S ... Everything is a massive slog... I'm finishing book 8 now, and I'm really tired of the series's shortcomings, but I do want to read it to the end.
Sorry you've struggled with the series! Thank you for watching 😄
Hahahhahahahhahahhaha. Listening at 2x Speed? HAHAHAHAHAHHA!?!?!?!? You're joking, right?
my TBR!!! omg I could read so many other books than this book in front of me right now, what if the other books are better WHAT IF I AM WASTING MY TIME ON THIS BOOK WHAT IF THE OTHER BOOKS UNLOCK THE SECRETES OF THE UNIVERSE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!@@PreppinShootinLivin
She pointed out something that drove me crazy about the series. Two characters know something but for whatever reason wont tell each other. Your yelling just tell them already.
I'm on book 11, and nobody knows Perrin can talk to wolves still. It's ridiculous.
