Everyone’s goal going into a World Series is to win four games. When you win four and they win three, that’s not luck. And it doesn’t matter if you win or lose by 1 or by 20, it’s still either one win or one loss, depending upon which end of the score you were on.
And Bobby Richardson did earn his MVP award.

I was very good friends w/ Don & still am good friends w/ Sandy. In early '89, I had the singular experience of standing at the foot of DaVinci's statue of Michael w/ Sandy.
We discussed the amazing ability of DaVinci to have capture, in stone, an image of someone setting their body, tensing the appropriate muscles in preparation to throw.
We had both seen numerous images of the statue, but only by seeing it in person, were we able to see the incredible lifelike research & detail DaVinci put into the sculpture.
I was an Athletic Trainer in the Dodgers org & an Exercise Physiologists, by education; Sandy had spent years studying the mechanics of throwing.
From each of our perspectives, we saw the same thing.
Don & I were friends because we made each other laugh & I was one of very few who could keep up w/ him, drink for drink, & not pass out or puke. The man liked his alcohol, fortunately for me, my partial Irish ancestry over compensates in that area, well... it did when I was young.
The memories of my time spent w/ both is a treasure, & strangely, had little to do w/ baseball; our Dodgers association was simply how we met.

I don't know if he ever did. On May 2, 1964, in the top of the 9th inning at Dodger Stadium, Duke hit a two-run game tying homer off Joe Moeller for the Giants that enabled them to beat the Dodgers in extra innings.

A Cardinal player hit a line ball down the right field line. All the fans were on their feet. We all thought the hit would be a easy triple. I looked and saw the 3rd base coach holding up his hands for the runner to stop at second base. The crowd was very loud. When Roberto Clemente threw the fastest outfield throw I had ever seen, the whole crowd shut up. Complete silence broken by a loud "smack"as the ball hit Ken Boyer's glove.

The Dodgers of the mid sixties were the weakest hitting team ever to win multiple World Series. Drysdale was out of town when he heard the news that Koufax had pitched his second no-hitter. His first thought was "did he win?"

With all due respect to the Duke. He couldn't come close to the other two

If they hadnt added on a lot more games to play no one would have broken any of the old baseball records .steroids and extra games broke the records not better men .

You can't blame everything on peds, there was expansion teams (creates watered down pitching), smaller dimensions to newer ball parks, lighter and harder bats like maple bats, juiced balls, and the pitchers throw harder so they go farther.

A lot of fun. But if Duke were alive today and he told that story, Drysdale would be depicted as a racist.
