Ross remembers Babo, whose mentorship of a new player changed Dodger (and Baseball) history forever.
Bobby Castillo, also known as "Babo," was a pitcher who played for the Los Angeles Dodgers during two stretches of his career (1977-1981 and 1985) . He was a Los Angeles native and a fan favorite.
Babo is credited with teaching his fellow Dodger pitcher, Fernando Valenzuela, how to throw the signature screwball that became a key part of Valenzuela's success.
He also was part of the Dodgers bullpen during their 1981 World Series run, even pitching an inning against the New York Yankees].
After his retirement, Castillo remained involved with the Dodgers organization, participating in fan events and community outreach.
Sadly, Bobby Castillo passed away 10 years ago after a battle with cancer. He...

Ross Remembers "Gentleman Al" who is remembered for a historic moment he would rather not remember.
Просмотров 614 месяца назад
Al Downing, a Major League Baseball pitcher from 1961 to 1977, bounced around for several teams (Yankees, Athletics, Brewers, Dodgers) but shone brightest with the Dodgers. He was an All-Star and even Comeback Player of the Year in 1971. He's notably the pitcher who surrendered Hank Aaron's record-breaking 715th home run. After his career, he transitioned to broadcasting for various teams.

It was real easy to pick him out from the impostures for a number of reasons: He was the only one wearing a Dodgers uniform with 53 on it. The impostures slightly resembled Woody from Toy Story and Lee Harvey Oswald. He knew that the Dodgers were no longer in Brooklyn. His prize for appearing? He received $250 and he got a case of deodorant.
Ross Talks to Tom Hoffarth, and his new book: “Perfect Eloquence: An Appreciation of Vin Scully”
Просмотров 3454 месяца назад
Vin Scully was known as a Dodgers broadcaster who called games from 1950 to 2016, from Brooklyn to Los Angeles, from Jackie Robinson to Clayton Kershaw. But for those who saw him and worked with him on a regular basis, Scully’s actions behind the scenes often spoke louder than his Hall of Fame words. When he died in 2022, the city took a pause to remember all those things he meant to them. As a...

Bruce Froemming and Vin Scully shared a mutual respect for each other, both being longtime figures in Major League Baseball. Scully, the legendary Dodgers broadcaster, was known for acknowledging umpires during broadcasts, including Froemming . Froemming, a well-regarded umpire, is credited with starting a tradition where umpire crews tip their caps to Scully before games as a sign of respect. ...

Drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in 1981, Mike Sharperson debuted in 1987. Traded midseason to the Los Angeles Dodgers, he became a key member of their 1988 World Series championship team. Nicknamed "The Stunt Men" for their versatility, Sharperson could play multiple positions, including third base, second base, shortstop, first base, and right field. Sharperson's most productive years were wi...

Tom Hoffarth interviews Steve Garvey for his book about Vin Scully
Просмотров 1575 месяцев назад
Though drafted by the Dodgers in 1968, Steve Garvey's first encounter with Vin Scully came much earlier. Believe it or not, their paths crossed in Brooklyn a dozen years prior. Back then, a young Garvey served as a batboy for the Brooklyn Dodgers, while Scully was taking his first steps in broadcasting. The now 73-year-old Garvey recalls the day clearly. "I was just a kid, probably seven or eig...

But I did remember the product was Vitalis. That’s good advertising, when you remember the product 50 years later.

I grew up a dodger fan as a kid , but hated listening to dodger games on a transistor radio because if Sandy was pitching , it was going to be won by Wills getting a hit , stealing second than scoring a on a single . Meanwhile , up in the San Francisco Bay , Willie Mays and Willie McCovey both were averaging about 150 homeruns each every year , while the Dodger slugger , Wes Parker was good for his usual 7- 9 taters a year . Willie used to hit that many on a twi-night double header . Anyway , Say Hey was my favorite MLB player of all time . God bless you sir .

There is a story that Mays stepped in to hit, digging in as normal. Then he looked up, saw that he was facing Drysdale, and called time. Then he reached down, filled in the depression where he had dug in, and stepped back into the box.

I used to watch Koufax back in the 1960's. Just hitting a foul ball was a moral victory. But the thing I remember most was when the Cardinals were playing the visiting Pirates. A Cardinal player hit a line ball down the right field line. All the fans were on their feet. We all thought the hit would be a easy triple. I looked and saw the 3rd base coach holding up his hands for the runner to stop at second base. The crowd was very loud. When Roberto Clemente threw the fastest outfield throw I had ever seen, the whole crowd shut up. Complete silence broken by a loud "smack"as the ball hit Ken Boyer's glove.

Hilarious. I bought a bottle of Vitalis circa 1990 because I was young and curious what it would do for my hair. Didn’t care for it and stuck with hair gel. I tried a tube of Groom & Clean around the same time as well…never got around to trying Brylcreem though. I was always fascinated with products that had been established and then fell out of favor. I’m old enough now to maybe start getting “Liver Spots”…time to pick up a jar of Porcelana!
