    I use this in Canada during winter to run into a store. You cannot lock the car when you go into a store, but you can also not drive it away unless you restart it (which needs the key close)

    You can leave utility mode on and exit the car, but you have to remove the inner key from the FOB, leave the FOB in the car, and lock the car with the metal key.

      That sounds good. But they could just make it work too. ;)

      Gordon Warlow Thanks ! We'll be able to test pretty soon almost extreme weather… we're entering the dreaded period of end of January, start of February, with its -20 Celsius -30 with the wind chill factor here in Montreal…. will see how this affect the battery...

    Are you sure the main battery is running the 12 volt system?
    I do not think so..... the 12 volt battery bust be used for all 12v system components.
    I think however that in Utility mode the main battery is used to charge the 12 volt system

    • @BatteryLife
      @BatteryLife  5 лет назад +3

      Andre Camara
      There is a converter that transforms the main battery 365V to 12V. In Utility Mode the main battery uses this converter to power everything.

      There is a device called the intelligent battery sensor (IBS) that detects input and output current, and a device called the low voltage dc/dc converter (LDC) that will supply power from the drive battery to the 12v battery. I think it will even increase how much current it's running through the 12v battery if the load increases. I hope to play around with the limitations by connecting a 1500 watt inverter to the 12v battery and seeing what I can safely pull from the system. The service manual doesn't explicitly state the maximum current that the LDC will deliver, so it would take some experimenting to see what happens. I'm curious to see if you can use this to charge one electric car with another electric car, sort of like a slow "jumpstart" for helping stranded EV's. IE: wire up a portable inverter to the 12v battery, and connect the 120v car charger and use it to charge another car. Also great potential for being able to use the Kona as a rolling power station for camping and roadtrips by doing something like this.

      I tested mine over the weekend, was only running a 12v camping fridge/freezer but it reduced the temp from ambient to -15 (a -32•c drop) and kept it there for 24 hours and I only lost aprox. 35 km of range, which I thought was ok, it’s going to remove the stress off the caravan house batteries this summer

      You have to keep in mind there are so many variables with this.. What's the outside temperature? Is it in the sun or shade? What temperature do you want it to be inside the car? They will all contribute to how much battery power is being used, even if it's windy or not.

    The dashboard message said key not in car, so utility mode seems okay for camping but not working when you go shopping and leave your pet in the car 😵.

    • @BatteryLife
      @BatteryLife  5 лет назад +1

      BackwoodsBungalow
      Correct! And it is not the key warning, which is the problem. You just cannot lock the car from outside when the car is on.

    • @marcusbiller867
      @marcusbiller867 5 лет назад +1

      @@BatteryLife You can still leave the climate on or leave the car unlocked. In the first scenario the 12v battery will drain a bit, but if it is the summer, you should be good for about 10-15 minutes. Or you can hide the key inside?

      I often do this and make sure I have the key on me then auto down the window close the door , reach in lock the car via door button then hit auto window up. Yes the car beeps because I closed the door without key inside but it’s ok. When I come back I use the blade key out of remote to open the door.

      There is always a way to lock the car somehow, but it would be nicer if it would just lock normally.
