- Kyle tests the base vs maxed out trim on the Hyundai Kona EV to find out what you get for the $8k price difference here in the US.
Two edits: Ultimate also has a heated steering wheel which is great in the winter time. Also, the Ultimate has a radar sensor whereas the SEL doesn't. This is likely what is used for pedestrian detection and adaptive cruise control.
Diameter is for circles....the word to describe the inch of the monitor is diagonal
finally answers to the important question(s) !
I’ve driven both of them for weeks. Ultimate all day. It’s actually quite a big difference the more you drive it. The SEL still has Hyundai’s old infotainment system while the ultimate has the new updated software. Weird.
One more nudge to promote the more expensive vehicle. I had a middle trim sonata a few years back that didn't have android auto, but the top line did.
The plastic panel HUD is more of a logical decision than cost savings for the manufacturer. If you've ever had a car with windscreen HUD, then had to replace that windshield, you'd know it's nearly impossible to get a compatible replacement. The dealerships aren't good about ordering OEM windscreens and will order 3rd party and claim they are OEM. That 3rd party windscreen will lack the appropriate reflective layers to make the HUD display, so it will become unusable. That little sheet of flip up plastic is easily replaced when it starts to bleach out from the sun.
That's almost exactly the experience I had with my Pontiac Aztek with HUD
I’m not looking at the windshield in other models or the plastic window in the Kona when using a HUD. I’m looking at the information. I love the HUD on my Ultimate. It is much safer than trying to pick out the info from the info crowded dashboard screens.
The sound system in the Ultimate blows away the lower trim’s system. When driving, the lower trim, I thought something was wrong with the radio or the station. When I got my Ultimate back from the shop, I realized it has a better sound system with some thump!
You are nitpicking about the sound of a heads up display
The screen on the 2020 Ultimate is 10" not 8, so quite a size difference there. Thanks.
So essentially, it appears Hyundai built such a solid car, they had to hobble it in lame and nonsensical ways to justify the higher price for the ultimate lol.
Is that different from any other manufacturer?
@@OutofSpecMotoring Never said it was. I am however impressed with their excellent vehicle.
Kyle, were big fans of your videos. But I must give you push back, HD Radio is awesome!! Yes, some of us from the next generation above do listen to radio....lol.. Thanks and keep up the great reviews and road tests.
I have the Ultimate trim but also drive the lower trim for 1200 miles while mine was in the shop. The Ultimate seats are way better. Much easier to get in and out with the leather seat.
Do either trims have 360 cameras?
You state the HUD should be projected onto the windshield. Why? As far as the motor noise, it just one of many sounds the Kona makes as its systems awaken. The HUD works great and I missed it when I had to rent the lower trim without it. (Ultimate in shop for new drive gear unit which failed at 29,000 miles.) Do not buy one. This defect is major and could include the motor also failing. There is a TSB on this and the Kia Niro.
I keep getting flashed on low beam as people think I have my high beam on! America is weird in the UK ACC is standard on every model from Iconic to Premium SE and then Ultimate which is the new name for SE
Base doesn’t have the heat pump
Ultimate in the USA doesn’t have a heat pump either.
It says in Hyundai manual that climate control should be on when operating the ventilated seats or there could be damage to them. What’s up with that?
The Ultimate is worth the $8K. I love my Kona Ultimate EV.
I have a Bolt EUV Premier with everything but Super Cruise. I am the only driver so maybe this is just a me thing. I've got the power adjustable driver seat. When I picked up the car at the dealership I adjusted the seat to my liking and have never touched it since. Like I said maybe it's just me?
I listen to HD radio in Chicago in my model 3 and when I drive outside the range I switch to the app for the radio station also through the tesla.
Hate the one touch up & down. Sux when you are just trying to crack open the window.
Good review, but you had a few inaccuracies, eg... you said you're driving from CT to FL, on the "west coast." shouldn't that be 'east coast?' Also, you said the only diff between the center infotainment system is the 8" vs 7" and HD FM radio on Ultimate.. but you forget to mention that SEL does NOT have map navigation built-in that Ultimate does...
Thanks for pointing this out! The west coast, of Florida, I should have specified. Also, I didn’t see any mention of the SEL not having built in maps in the press materials and honestly I didn’t check, but I appreciate you commenting! We’re all here to learn together.
@@OutofSpecMotoring (ah.. you meant to say West coast of FL, got it...)... Yeah, SEL doesnt have navigation (you can see it's missing a Map button).. also at the beginning you almost seem to be saying a "$70,000" ( I think you meant to say $7k difference) in price, but then shortly said later said $8,000 difference... but the other info seems to be pretty good... I can't get a Kona Electric in my area, but can get Kia Niro EV...
I believe you heard $70k instead of “seven to eight thousand”, apologies for not being extremely annunciated
@@OutofSpecMotoring yes, exactly. I heard $70k.. but you were saying "seven to eight." got it now.. thanks for explaining... it makes sense now...
@@OutofSpecMotoring Also, while I'm at it... I agree with you about the cloth seats, I prefer it, and I dont like sun-roof.. so that's why I'd get Kona SEL if I could, but the one feature I would have liked would have been built-in maps for the SEL.. alas.. I guess I can use Android Auto (I believe SEL has that too) or Apple CarPlay for navigation..
So the SEL model has heated cloth seats?
Yes
The rims looks cheap on both for the money
ev rims👍
I don’t like them either but the rationale is, they are more aErOdYnAmIc. Gotta squeeze everything out of an EV. No matter how ugly. Although on a model 3 you can get the non ugly rims as an option
Whats ur height?
The model 3 headlights aren't great? What?? Compared to the surface of the sun? LOL that's gotta be a flipping joke
I agree especially about the model 3 headlights. Never seen the car with such good illumination. Maybe there is something wrong with his 3 or he's referring to when he drives backwards with the reverse lights LOL
I feel like if a human walked in front of my headlights I would burn a hole in them...
manual seats????? HA!!!
Model 3 owner reviewing a Kona? Hmmmm, you must be dehydrated, because you have been drinking and serving a lot of hater-aid.
Haha I’m the most brand agnostic Tesla owner there is. I own two other brands of EVs as well.
I get it, but your review of the heads up display came off uppity and nit picky.
Fred Zifferhoffer that pretty much describes me. Very nit picky with cars
Fair enough
