I worked at a heavy truck Ford dealer when the L10 came out. Couldn't believe the size of it after working on 855 and 903 Cummins, Cats and Detroits.
Next Dealer I worked for was a GMC truck dealer and did tons of top end L10 work on a fleet of non Jake L10s.
Got out of shops and drove trucks and still do 30+ years later, fuel hauling.
One gas hauler I drove for had a fleet of Freightliners, all had 300hp L10's with Jakes and 9sp Fullers.
Let me tell ya... I gained tons of respect for that little engine! We pulled 9000 gals gas and it did not win any races BUT, for being 300 horse it did a fantastic job and the Jake worked perfect... hardly needed to touch brake pedal, Jake held control speed and brought it to a stop.
The truck I used racked up 998,000 miles before they overhauled it... still ran pretty good but we were putting a gallon of oil a day in her.
I just found your channel, and like the content. I like the way you work, detail and common sense!!
Just thought I'd give ya some L10 input. Next engine that fleet went to in Freightliners was the Cummins M11 and that ran like a top!
Today, I'm still gas haulin, but in a Mack Anthem with an MP7 Mack (which is 10.9 liter) 390 hp, small but mighty... really runs great and turns 1370 rpms at 70 mph gets 8+ mpg's, haha. Times have changed!!

Thank you for watching and I love hearing those stories about old trucks! I know it can get a bad rap as a “little motor” but the L10 was a reliable workhorse in a lot of fleets for a long time. I’ve come to really appreciate mine.

Riding along with you in this video brought back memories of driving the L9000/L10 when I drove for SYSCO out of Columbus 30-odd years ago. I hated that engine. That 25lbs of boost you are getting while just bobtailing makes me nervous, because I avoided going over 30 with a GOOD engine. I hope your L!0 can handle that much boost. Or perhaps I have no idea what I'm talking about.😄Also in 1991 I got a 1967 Loadstar cab and chassis with a 4-53T/5x3. I did not have the time or a good place to take it on so I sold it to my farmer neighbor. He got it going, put on a dump bed so I got to hear it sing up and down my road on a regular basis, which was cool.

This is a pretty mild turn up so I don’t anticipate any issues, especially for what I pull and how rarely that happens. I’ve been very happy with the L10, but I do run pretty light

@@robstruckshop80 You know your engine. But I still would not go over 30 with it. But like I said, I probably have no idea what I'm talking about.😄It truly is a very sweet truck. Nice job.

So, somehow RUclips decided to wait till tonight to show me this. I been waiting since you hinted about it in a video. I have same experience with no smoke at idle with same injectors. If I idle over night it will puff a good amount getting on highway then clear up. My truck has a h2d. I been debating on what turbo to run for some time now. Full load I only get 25psi. I’m happy to see your results. Once I’m comfortable agin with the truck I’ll do a turbo. Just to much has gone wrong with mine lately. Can’t wait for the next one.

RUclips has been delaying my notifications on certain channels as well lately- I think they’re trying to force me to watch other channels! I let the truck sit for a week and on a 40 degree cold start it smoked for 5-10 seconds then cleared right up. So far it seems the fueling is dead on now. On the turbo, everything I’ve found says the H2C/D/E are all very similar and all take the same basic cartridge. The 4mm change I went with is pretty sweet- lag is greatly reduced but it pushes right up to max boost. I’m hitting 25 psi with no load- I don’t expect much more because I’m assuming that’s the dump point for the internal wastegate. I agree on yours, sounds like you’ve got it squared away but I’d want to be sure too before throwing more air at it. Thanks for watching, Gary!

i hate working on the set back engines. when i do and i have to be inside the cab i use the a roll of the clear plastic carpet runner with adhesive on the back to protect the interior. i cover everything. one drop of oil seems to spread on the interior like anti seize. looks like she is running much better. i hate a smoking truck too....if its black, its wasted money....and i dont waste money!

It’s a pain in the butt for sure. Luckily lashing valves and swapping injectors is a relatively easy job so it wasn’t too bad but I wouldn’t want to do much more. The worst is constantly having to switch from being on your knees in the cab, to standing next to the engine out front, to climbing on top of it.

@@robstruckshop80 None of the L10's I drove for SYSCO in the L9000's or the IH 2300's had jakes. But the M11's in the Aeromax's we started to get in 1992 did.
