I mean, they'd have lawsuits up the yinyang if their claims were false. There's no sense anymore to be throwing out good resources doing these 3000-mile oil changes, assuming they're using a good synthetic. Purolator boss is a good filter. That's my second choice. But I'm keeping It the same for a few trends. Then I'll start changing to different filters and such.
Nice to know you can actually go as long as some oil manufacturers claim and that auto start stop is not as detrimental to your engine as most people think! I was thinking of this oil for my 2nd gen 3.5 eco, running Mobil 1 atbthe moment
Get rid of the mobil 1. It is made to the lowest of standards to be called a synthetic. It has failed many tests. Auto start isn't as detrimental and people always say im wrong. Which is why I tested the oil and did auto start on that run.
@huemongus3742 go look at ford boss me. He did a test on about 35 different oils. Even lake speed has said on my livestreams Mobil is made to the lowest allowed.
@BeardedFordTech my only issue with getting rid of Mobil 1 is that I don't think my Ford dealer has another option when it comes to synthetic oil for my Eco.And my dealer service department is excellent, only place I'll take my F150. I'm currently on a 8000kms/5000 mile oci, what if I shorten it to 5000kms/3000miles?
@jasonbrushett2005 Mobil 1 was breaking down at like 1500 miles. Does your dealer not carry Motorcraft full synthetic? Or an automatic store you can get it like oreillys?
Anthony did that oil smell strongly like gas when you drained it? I'm glad you came over to the dark side like me with oil analysis! Rich kicked me off his channel because I was posting that I was going 10,000 miles on OCI for my Hyundai Tucson 1.6T GDI engine and 12,000 miles on OCI on my 2001 Ford explorer sport trac 4.0L engine with 215,000 miles on that engine now! I have the oil analysis on both to back all that up too. This video will not make him happy but oh well right?
Many years ago I owned a fleet service business. Even back then we started recommending 5k oil service intervals, and we knew full well many would be over that by the time we got our hands on them. After many years the only engine we ever lost was run low from a leak. These were gas engines and they would go to scrap with a running engine. The thick headed types will be along shortly with their tropes about excessive intervals and brand choice being the dogma of our times.
They already started. They are buried in the comments I know all about the fleet stuff it's what I do now. 10k miles. I got one now about 7k over but it's about to come in.
Anthony, thanks for not being another ford tech that acts like God's gift to auto repair knowledge and everything you say is "bible". I appreciate your willingness to learn and share that with others and using a data driven approach and not just "don't go past 5k OCI". As we heard, even 5k OCI may not be safe or best. I'm also glad your not attempting to "analyze" oil and addtive performance in your kitchen with a bearing grease tester.
Your welcome. It's interesting to me. The science is cool. I'm always willing g to learn that's why we are all here. So we can all learn something. Yeah I'm not doing that in my kitchen. Thats what labs are for. My take on it is this. And I've said it on livestreams before with lake speed. If you need an additive. You need a different oil. A good quality oil already has what you need
Run it 5k and send it off for an oil analysis at www.speediagnostix.com that will tell you if you can go further. Use 5k as a starting point. But make sure ypu do at least 2 oil.cha gea before sending it in. Want to make sure it's all amsoil and nothing else mixed with it. Don't want any false results.
what about Turbos? You pull up to a light and the engine stops, but that turbo can spin for a bit afterwards. I drive a twin turbo and always idle about 20 seconds when cold to get the oil to the turbos. I also let it idle 10-15 seconds after stopping to let them slow with oil flow.
Technically when shutting off your truck like pulling up to a gas station or home for the day your supposed to let it idle for 2 min (if you have a powerstroke)But with an auto start, stop event two things are happening. It's not off long enough to lose much oil the engine will start back before that happens. It has an electric coolant pump or an auxiliary one to keep coolant flowing through it. If temls get too high it starts up. Same with the cab temp. If there's a temp change in the cab it starts up. All of this has been thought of. I did a video like years ago about how the system works. The 6.7 powerstroke turbos get way hotter. And therefore do not have start stop (and for other reasons) Also some vehicles the electric coolant pump will flow coolant to keep the temp down when the vehicle is parked. Not all of them do that. Some brands do.
Excellent video Anthony! Lake has extensive knowledge in engine building, motor oil development and analysis. The Speed Diagnostix report goes more in depth than Blackstone Labs. Which Amsoil 5W30 oil are you using? How far is your daily round trip commute and what are the conditions such as highway or city traffic conditions?
Amsoil 5w30 XL. My drive to work is about 10 miles. Home differs depending on errands. So average 45 miles a day. It is literally 50/50 city highway. There are other ways to go. But for testing I'm trying to keep it as close to the same as possible.
Anthony, in the closing minutes he spoke about the thinner oil providing better protection on the Vette engine. Have you considered going to a lower viscosity as well?
Through him it's $65. He sends the kit that comes with the bottle and a flat rate box with a shipping label already on it and instructions. Remove plug. Wait 3 sec fill bottle to line. Put cap on. Put in bag. Put in prepaid box. Go one and fill out the form. Drop box in mailbox. Easy. $65 is well worth the information you get from him and to know what's going on inside your engine. And if something is going on you can catch it before it gets worse or itoo late. Best $65 you'll ever spend
Quick question. I change My oil every 3000 miles with quality synthetic oil and an OEM motorcraft filter. When I check my oil on the dipstick it still looks almost new. Clean and very light brown. So when I goto drain it the oil is always darker. Why would it look barely used on a dipstick to black at the drain plug???
Because the dipstick is just taking a small sample on a very small metal rod. Like if you were to dip your finger in it. When you say good quality synthetic what brand do you mean?(please don't say Mobil 1) get an anaysis done. I'm sure you can go a lot longer than 3k. You may be wasting money.
Remember everyone drives different. Every engine is different. The myth is using it causes engine wear. When in reality it's not off long enough to cause wear on startup. First startup in the morning does more wear. However. Make sure you get a trend going. Your going to need more than one analysis. Idling for long periods washes out cylinders causing fuel dilution. You heard hum. Fuel dilution is the number one cause of wear. Start stop reduces fuel dilution as you can see in my test. Cause it's not siting there idling. I'm curious to see your results as you get a trend going. Make sure when you do them. Use the same oil and filter and try to drive the same as you did for the previous one.
@@BeardedFordTech right now I'm trying to figure out the best oil/filter combo then on to the start/stop part. I just recently purchased this vehicle and just did the first oil change so it will be a minute before I have a initial set of data.
@jeffhudson2346 oil analysis will tell you what combo. I run amsoil 5w30 xl series. And a Motorcraft filter. This is the fun part. Seeing what works best. I can recommend good oils and filters. But it all boils down to how you drive. I'm an amsoil dealer. I'm not going to tell you it's the best stuff ever to get you to buy it. Is it good stuff? Indeed it is. But what works for me and my driving habits may not work for you. Or it may work better. Won't know until.you get lab tests done. It's going to take a few to see the trend. But it's all worth it. This is how you can be absolute sure your engine is running in perfect condition. If you want to try amsoil. Let me know. If not. That's fine too. I'm curious to see your results. Maybe get you on a livestream with Lake Speed so he can go over it with you if your interested in that.
@@BeardedFordTech It could be interesting for sure because I am starting with my old reliable combo for Ford V-8 engines, Motorcraft 5-30 synthetic blend and the Fram orange can of death as a starting point.
@jeffhudson2346 interesting to see what the Fram would do. I'm not fond of them. Never had good results with them. But. Everyone drives different. It may work great for you.
But all of the start/stop systems starting directly after the cooling temperature is rising but at the same time the oil is still bone cold. And at this point in combination with the start/stop the oil takes even longer to get on temperature. (especially at city traffic driving cycles) I can’t believe that this situation will not harm the engine. I’m with you at that point, that after the oil has reached its operating temperature you will not have excessive wear.
Yep. It's at temp. And when it shuts off. It's not off long enough to really harm the engine. He even said so. You will always have minimum wear. But the start stop isn't causing it or making it wear out quicker.
@jetskiracer222 if I use it I get to operating temp. If the oil temp is too cold or its too cold outside start stop shouldn't work until it's at a certain temp. But using it at operating temp you should be just fine!
I just watched your video about start/stop. I never noticed before that it doesn't turn off until it hits operating temp, but I realize now it doesn't, so that makes sense. What about remote starting or warming up your truck? There's allot being said right now about it not being good for your engine.
@jetskiracer222 I remote start when it's really cold to defrost the windows. Or really hot so I'm not on fire when I get in there. It's the idling that's bad. And short tripping not letting it get to temp. Everyone says start stop is bad. Or remote start is bad. But they never say just starting it in the morning is bad or sitting there idling in traffic letting the fuel wash the cylinders and dilute the oil. They just assume things. First initial startup of the day is where the most wear occurs. And idling for long periods makes it even worse. Remote start and start stop aren't doing harm like people assume. They don't care to learn how any of the systems work. They just want to blame the systems. Or compare it to older engines. Modern engines can handle it.
Yeah you might be. Oil does have a shelf live. Sitting is bad for it. Send in a used sample. The website is in description and in video. Only way to tell if your oil is bad. Or if it's good and your getting rid of it early wasting money.
Very interesting information. Especially about the use of auto start stop. I have such a habit of turning it off as soon as I get in and start any of our trucks.
See turning it off causes fuel dilution and more engine wear. I keep trying to tell people but everyone says I'm wrong. Oil analysis says otherwise. Idling an engine does more harm than good
I turn it off immediately as well. I typically spend very little time idling on my daily trips, maybe a few minutes in total with the relatively few traffic lights I go through but it's super annoying to have the engine cut out and then have it re-start it maybe 10-15s later.
@ferrumignis now that I can see. 10-15s is way to short for that. But please make sure you drive long enough to get the oil up to temp to evaporate unburned fuel or your doing more harm that good. The fuel will break down the oil and wear it out even faster
Well if you have a down in the dumps engine condition with coolant leaking in and gasket material shredded in the valvetrain and dirt and burnt gunk stuck on the bearings and dirt particles from driving in death valley for 10 years.....no engine oil no matter how good will make it past 2000 miles in useable condition. Its all about the condition of the engine to begin with more so than the quality of the oil as long as the oil meets all ASE API certifications.
If your piston rings are in excellent condition with no gummed up oil rings ,You should get no fuel mixing with your oil,,I have a 1.5 dci Renault Diesel engine,I change my oil every 3500 miles with MPM C3 5w40 oil,,The engine takes 4.8 litres and after 3500 miles 4.8 litres comes out,,It doesn't use any oil or make oil,,
Mine doesn't use or make it. But gasoline engines will always have fuel dilution. Especially if the engine is cold because it rings haven't swelled. We went over this towards the end of the video.
@ Nightstorm: Sorry, this is simply not the case with modern GDI engines, fuel dilution of the oil is real and very typical, especially with engines that spend a lot time idling and operating cold.
@D2O2 yep. Apparently even with the science behind it and the testing we are still wrong. How else can we prove this to people? Your one of my favorite subs. Shoot me an email. I'd like to talk to you.
@steelzmb4262 send in a sample so you can get a trend analysis going so he can give you a correct answer and not guess. He doesn't want to tell you anything wrong. He wants your machine to perform in tip top shape
@deleteduser3749 yeah the was the first sample I ever did right around the time I first met him. Then wanted to see what it was like if I went less. Now that's out of the way. We are going up to get a trend going. I just noticed that. Good catch.
@@BeardedFordTech I really enjoy the content in this video, along with your interaction with Lake Speed and your excellent replys to of the comments from viewers. The Amsoil "XL" product line was replaced last summer by the slightly improved "Extended Life" oil (which had acquired additional base to counteract the acids), so they extended the warranty to 20,000 miles or one year (whichever comes first) for "Normal Driving," but the warranty of the Extended Life oil only applies to 12,000 miles (or one year) for "Severe Driving" (just like the XL).
@ferrumignis why would I swap different grades? I run 5w30 that is what the manufacturer recommends. Your preaching to the choir. I've been doing this a long time. Your hearing 0w20 cause that's what his daughter's Toyota takes. That is what he is referring to. Not my truck.
20 bucks a jug is like $4 a quart. That's not expensive oil. I wouldn't go 8k on Walmart oil either. But that oil may be working for you. Every engine is different. And all oils aren't the same. Send in a sample and see what it's doing. You may actually be throwing money away.
@@jwatt95 never heard of hpl. Im going to continue this little series of test. Then maybe switch to that and run tests on it as well. Should be interesting.
Why??? Why??? Oil changes are very cheap. Insurance payments, gas, and depreciation cost thousands each year oil changes 30 to 50 twice a year60 to 100. You can't change to many times. I had a Toyota pick 2000 and changed oil 37 time befo re trading in for new pickup in 2019. Dealer was shocked At how clean my engine. Gdi engines are very tough on oil and breaks down very rapidly.
Some people put way more miles a year on a vehicle than others. Did you ever run any oil analysis on it and actually quantify how hard it was on the oil, or is this simply your opinion based on anecdotes?
It's an opinion. He knows it. You know it. I know it. And I also know and so does everyone else that the analysis doesn't lie. Why throw mo ey away doing an oil change when there's plenty of oil life left that is doing its job. My engine is very clean inside. Literally the results don't lie.
Why would I do an oil analysis? That is as much as an oil change. I do all city driving in Texas 100 degree day 70 to 90 days a year. I have two cars change oil every six months cost me 120 dollars. That cost me 1000 to 1500 in ten years. Insurance will cost 7000 to 10,000 In thar same time. And don't have worry about damaging a 5000 dollars engine. If you can get me a method of getting 15,000 Miles on one Insurance payments jump right that.
I enjoy Lake and his knowledge, but I disagree with him on this. Start stop in these engines would cause more fuel in the oil. And the Oxidation on this oil is high due to the AN and esters in the oil. It going down, shows the oil is worse
If you say so. I think you need to go back and listen why the viscosity is where it is. Look at the previous changes too. Look at all of it. Go back and look at the other streams. Listen carefully. How does a stopped engine have more fuel dilution? There's no fuel being sprayed.
Umm no. That's what oil analysis tests are for. Oil has come a long long way. Quit being stuck in the old ways. Cause modern engines have come a long way too. If the anaysis comes back and says don't go 10k. Then I will back it up. This would be the first time going 10k on it. All for testing. So your telling me my engine is just going to automatically break in 39k miles? Cause I'm at 61 now.

Where can I find this info about oils failing tests?
Did not smell like gas at all. And the analysis shows very little fuel dilution. Yeah it'll probably make him mad. But analysis doesn't lie.
@BeardedFordTech
Analysis doesn't lie that's what I preach! 👍💯♥️🇺🇸
I have a 1992 f150 how long would you run the amsoil
Run it 5k and send it off for an oil analysis at www.speediagnostix.com that will tell you if you can go further. Use 5k as a starting point. But make sure ypu do at least 2 oil.cha gea before sending it in. Want to make sure it's all amsoil and nothing else mixed with it. Don't want any false results.
Thanks I have been curious about using a better oil and trying get more out of it I have been using cheap Walmart oil
what about Turbos?
And therefore do not have start stop (and for other reasons)
Also some vehicles the electric coolant pump will flow coolant to keep the temp down when the vehicle is parked. Not all of them do that. Some brands do.
10k is seen as pretty conservative here in Europe virtually no one changes oil before that sort of mileage.
Yeah. It's what ford recommends. But people are stuck in their old ways. You guys do a lot of driving too so that should say something as well.
@BeardedFordTech
Plus the European oil is different than ours! 👍💯♥️🇺🇸
@billy2bob63 yes it is. That I did know
Great video, thanks for sharing! I’m curious, what octane fuel do you run?
87 octane.
@Propelled Nope. No need to. My weight oil works just fine. The vette doesn't know what it likes lol.
Thanks for the information, If you don't mind asking, how much does an oil analysis cost. Thank you Sir for the video.
@@BeardedFordTech Ams oil
@J_J_Ander that's what I use. Sounds like a lifters and rockers in the video. I would check the valve lash make sure they are in spec
I am doing the same thing right now on the start stop thing, I feel better about using it now, but I'm still going to verify with lab testing.
Great video I learned a lot!
Me too! Thanks for watching. Make sure you check his channel too.
Science > Opinion
Everyone has an opinion. Especially on the start stop video I did.
Oil analysis is FACTS 👍💯♥️🇺🇸
But all of the start/stop systems starting directly after the cooling temperature is rising but at the same time the oil is still bone cold. And at this point in combination with the start/stop the oil takes even longer to get on temperature. (especially at city traffic driving cycles)
I can’t believe that this situation will not harm the engine.
So get to operating temp. before using start/stop?
I just change the oil on my 6.7 Cummins, 6.4L HEMI, Prius, and motorcycle every 4-5k miles, or twice a year for simplicity.
You might be wasting money!
Yeah you might be. Oil does have a shelf live. Sitting is bad for it. Send in a used sample. The website is in description and in video. Only way to tell if your oil is bad. Or if it's good and your getting rid of it early wasting money.
I've seen VOAs for 20+ year oil. No shelf life
@@BeardedFordTech I sent in a sample this morning for the HEMI. I will update results. Thank You guys.
@@NoName-c4y7h awesome. Thank you.
A awesome video!!
And there is another one coming with the 10k oil change! With results.
Idling an engine does more harm than good
I turn it off on a Focus RS…maintaining constant lubrication to the turbo is a high priority to me.
@@fastsvo You can literally see the wear rate is very low compared to having it running. This one is turbo charged too
I turn it off immediately as well.
I take it you have had an engine like that? Thats not good
If your piston rings are in excellent condition with no gummed up oil rings ,You should get no fuel mixing with your oil,,I have a 1.5 dci Renault Diesel engine,I change my oil every 3500 miles with MPM C3 5w40 oil,,The engine takes 4.8 litres and after 3500 miles 4.8 litres comes out,,It doesn't use any oil or make oil,,
Mine doesn't use or make it.
Hi @lakespeedjr I have a seadoo jet ski that uses mineral oil and service interval is 100hrs.but I only use 20 hrs a year. When do I change the oil?
I just forwarded him a screen shot of your question. Monitor the comments to see when he replies. That is a very good question!
Without oil analysis data, I’d just be guessing. I don’t like to guess.
Send in a sample. www.speediagnostix.com
Bone Stock 25 hours, if modified every 20 hours.
@steelzmb4262 send in a sample so you can get a trend analysis going so he can give you a correct answer and not guess. He doesn't want to tell you anything wrong. He wants your machine to perform in tip top shape
Ooo drain plug hot!!
Yep. When you hold it. Was a tad on the hot side.
You drive farther in 3 weeks than I do in a year!😂😂
I did a lot of driving yep.
👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀
It'd a good one 💯💯
So adding catch can would extend drain internal to avoid fuel dilution in the oil?
No. Catch can would keep oil out of intake. Nothing to do with fuel dilution. Will keep intake clean though.
Strange that the 2/26/23 sample says 5785 miles and the 6/9/23 sample says 4879 miles?
That's the miles those were taken. And the date. Why is that strange? I keep going up a bit at a time.
@@BeardedFordTech right I get what it's supposed to be but mileage was more in February?
@deleteduser3749 yeah the was the first sample I ever did right around the time I first met him. Then wanted to see what it was like if I went less. Now that's out of the way. We are going up to get a trend going. I just noticed that. Good catch.
Is this the Sig Series or XL?
XL the 12k mile formula. Which you can't get anymore. They redid it and now it's good for 25k. This analysis trend is going to get really good
@@BeardedFordTech I really enjoy the content in this video, along with your interaction with Lake Speed and your excellent replys to of the comments from viewers.
If you are using auto stop/ start i would recomend using an oil like castrol magnatec and if using 0w20 go to at least a 5w30 !
Why would I run 0w20 in a ranger? I run 5w30. Amsoil. Castrol failed the test sorry. He was talking about 0w20 for his daughters Toyota.
Run what the manufacturer recommends, don't start swapping to different grades just because you "feel" it's better.
@ferrumignis why would I swap different grades? I run 5w30 that is what the manufacturer recommends. Your preaching to the choir. I've been doing this a long time. Your hearing 0w20 cause that's what his daughter's Toyota takes. That is what he is referring to. Not my truck.
What data set is this recommendation based on?
@scootymoon what are you talking about?
I cant bring myself to go 8k on my new malibu turbo when supertech dexos oil is 20 bucks a jug
20 bucks a jug is like $4 a quart. That's not expensive oil. I wouldn't go 8k on Walmart oil either. But that oil may be working for you. Every engine is different. And all oils aren't the same. Send in a sample and see what it's doing. You may actually be throwing money away.
@@BeardedFordTech I probably am throwing money away but I do know st is good oil, I read a lot of uoas on bitog
Now run high performance lubricants and do a uoa and be amazed.
I run amsoil in everything.
@@BeardedFordTech I used to run amsoil as well. Switched to hpl and definitely like their products better. Amsoil is a nice product as well.
@@jwatt95 never heard of hpl. Im going to continue this little series of test. Then maybe switch to that and run tests on it as well. Should be interesting.
Best practice is to change the oil and filter every 3000 miles. Use an inexpensive oil (non-synthetic) to keep the cost low.
🤦♂️I'm just going to pretend I didn't see that comment. Have a nice day
Why??? Dealer was shocked
At how clean my engine.
Insurance will cost 7000 to 10,000
In thar same time. And don't have worry about damaging a 5000 dollars engine. If you can get me a method of getting 15,000
Miles on one Insurance payments jump right that.
Your starter definitely won't last very long.
If ypu say so. Been going strong 4 years now.
I would not go 10 k miles with any oil pull the oil pan and that tell you the story with 10 k miles need new engin at 100k
Whats that thing hold? 7 gallons???
6.2 quarts lol
