Just to be fair theres a HUGE space between top tier and broken. Peach takes a lot of skill in ultimate. Meta Knight was easy to play and the most broken character EVER in brawl

I'd say Meta knight takes some skill because anyone who plays brawl at top level knows that matchup like the back of their hand
He is noob friendly, yes, but to execute him at an intermediate level required quite a bit of skill. At the top level though, Meta Knight simply has too many tools with his great recovery, camping/wall of pain, good grab game/tech chase, and very short animation times on basically all of his tilts and aerials. His weakness is supposed to be bad smashes and finishes, but then he has his up B

Rulx, you have a really weird perception of “broken.” 64 Puff is mid-tier. Melee ICs were propped up purely by wobble, which was almost impossible to set up against high-level opponents. Ultimate Snake is only good if you have godlike control.

@TheBoltMaster Pichu isn't as insane as the pre-patch Smash 4 characters as he actually struggles against swordsman, especially Cloud or Ike. Peach in Ultimate isn't that dominate either. So, what it comes out to is that we haven't played the game enough to say for certain.

@@OkairMcLaren lol no. Meta Knight was uncontested the entirety of Brawl and destroyed every matchup. The only matchup considered slightly even was Pikachu I believe. Bayo, still being broken, didnt like some matchups. Plus, being able to have the best recovery ever in a smash game, while being able to kill off of nearly any move and combo off of any move while having nearly no start up or endlag is just insane. Not to mention his low profile and amazing disadvantage state.

I think it was a bit early to say ultimate broken characters. We haven't seen a single character dominating tournaments.
Edit: single character means a character dominating tournaments at the point where it's "pick or lose" because of the character's strength.
No meta can be defined in few months. Remember when people said Inkling is the best character? She's still top tier but where is her tournament results?

@@willmalony7712 peach is really good at high skill. Snake has an infinite recovery, but can be easily gimped while doing it, or destroyed after landing. Snake does have a lot of projectiles, but and Star Fox character, or anyone with a reflect can easily deal with him.
Every single character in ultimate has strengths and weaknesses. Broken is when their strengths can easily shield their weaknesses. But in ultimate, every character has at least five counter plays who are strong. It's like rock paper scissors. It's a circle where one is strong to another. Broken is rock paper shotgun

Exactly, pre-patch Diddy was pretty stupid. Also, Fox should barely make this list as he is overated even by most Melee players. He shouldn't be SS tier as he can be beaten easier than people make it out to be. Falco has a better matchup spread for the mid tiers and does almost as well as Fox against the top tiers. Marth is like this as well.

I agree with a lot of the stuff here but prepatch Diddy should’ve been higher than the ultimate character. Ultimate really has no “broken” characters imo but it does have debateable number one characters. Peach is probably the best character in ultimate but not broken. Pichu should not be on this list. The way I see it right now Pichu is barely top 10
We're only a month into ultimate and already have a year's worth of pichu highlights. There isn't even that many Pichu top players. Compared to the likes of ICs and Bayonetta who will absolutely kill you in one move(leading into inescapable combo or chain grab), Pichu is only one or two notches below that. You will definitely take 50% from getting hit once by Pichu. 80% if it's Void piloting. With no changes, in a year, it's not too far fetched to imagine a Pichu top player consistently getting death strings off.
@@spikespiegel1492 It's not to hard to imagine that the reason people are getting those strings is because the game is still new and they haven't adjusted to escaping a returning characters combo game. I think he'll be in about the same spot in a year's time, ofc depending on patch changes.

@@alexescobar776 He might complain about Ice Climbers being too low, but besides that, this list from 1-7 is quite solid. Just ignore the Ultimate characters and it's about how most people would rank the cast. Throw in Puff from Melee at 9th and Olimar from Brawl at 10th as replacements for Peach and Pichu.

@@PepeSilvia01 I am quite serious, even after all these years. All the above characters force you to either play the same character you're fighting or use the character that is one place above them. The disadvantage is THAT big.
You can't say the same for Fox. Fox is the character that gets punished the hardest in the entire game, which in turn makes it possible for any other character to either do good damage or a kill combo.
64 Pika, because of the engine and hitstun of the game, can also be combo'd for good damage or killed out right.
Yes both of these characters have a their privileges, but they don't make it oppressive for other characters like Bayonetta and MK do.
@Julio Paulino fair, doubles cloud was absolutely busted but even in singles a lot of people counter picked cloud ... with another cloud. And that's usually a pretty crimson sign something is wrong.

You cannot put Ultimate characters on this list yet, we just don't have the results. A character isn't broken to me until they dominate the meta in some way, and neither Pichu nor Peach has done that yet.
Pichu has not done this yet but he is close ... Very close .. his air combo is nearly impossible to fight against , gard against even Dodge against .

Peach is broken in Ultimate imo. Not super ridiculous but float cancels bypassing the short hop damage penalty make her pretty busted. Also, turnips hit harder than the moon

That is funny to hear that it was post patch. I honestly agree as Pichu struggles with swordsman. Also, why is Fox so high? He actually isn't that crazy when you get into Melee and then compare him to pre-patch Smash 4 characters or Brawl top tiers.

@@Quackra He IS broken, and you don't really need to actually play the game to know he is. His shine comes out in one frame, which is instantly. He has a good recovery, which doesn't matter since you have a broken ass combo game, and if you look at the official tier list, (The only tier list I'd use personally cause it's accurate.) He's SS tier, which means he's pretty much the best charcater in the game. But even though I think Fox is broken he isn't the most broken character since Brawl Mk exists, but Fox is still broken. In fact you can ask any other person who's played Melee and it'll rarely be anyone who says he isn't. Plus alot of people don't even play Melee and know this, and I could write a 30 minute reading on why he's broken using smash data itself, but that's why other RUclips videos exist.
@@Retr0_ADHD Duck Hunt's can is frame one and he isn't good. Pichu and Pikachu's thunder comes out frame one and no one really complains about that. Also, he doesn't belong in SS as he goes pretty even with Falco, Marth, Peach and to a recent extent Puff as there are at least 3-5 in the top 100 currently. I hear people complain about Puff and not wanting to switch meaning that Puff is debatably within the top 3 of Melee. Having a good combo game doesn't always mean the character is good as they could do little to no damage in some cases. However, Melee Fox does do good damage with his good combo game for Melee standards. Another thing that matters is results of players with other characters besides just Fox, looking at the reason of why Fox is the most played it stems from mostly one character, Puff to be specific. On top of it Leffen himself has said that Puff is the second best in the game, even if I think she is third at best. Hbox also has many results with first place with Puff, enough for me to just straight up disagree with that bad tier list on smashboards with Fox in SS. Axe himself also got 2nd at Genesis 6, and he plays mostly Pikachu. In the top 10 only Half the players play fox now, and Leffen is the only solo Fox in it. Out of the current top 100 less than half of the players play Fox as well, the actual amount being 38 total, most of them are not even solo Fox players. On top of that Falco is almost has quite a few reps as well with Marth also being basically just as well represented. Typically representation would not matter on how good a character is when talking about the top 5, unless the roster is Smash 64 roster. Though I can say Smash 64 Pikachu is not less broken than Melee Fox as Pikachu in 64 is nearly as bad or worse than Bayonetta, probably is less broken than Bayo overall. Fox himself is broken than people like to say that haven't played Melee not saying he 100% isn't. Though I have played and watched people play Melee and Fox has more weaknesses than people like to think. His recovery is also good in more of a theoretical stance, in reallity it is pretty good minus the fact that anyone can just grab ledge and if you were going for it you die. But that honestly is all recoveries in Melee kind of had a problem with in general. Though a benefit that Fox has is that he did have the ability to recover from 360 different angles which is one of the reasons his recovery wasn't bad in that game. However, if you hit Fox out of his up b before he starts moving in a direction completely, he just straight up dies like Cloud in Smash 4. On top of it his side b puts him in to free fall in Melee making recovering to stage actually harder than most people actually think. If that alone doesn't sound bad then the fact that his fall speed gets him chain grabbed by Pichu from 0 to 60 easily on FD. Pikachu can chain grab him as well because of this. Pichu in fact has some easy combos on Fox just because of this allowing him to get him to 80. Pichu will sadly be doing like 2 or 3 damage a hit because up air does literally no damage. Puff can kill Fox at 0 as well, and it is a true combo at early percents. Fox's kill power seems good due to his higher damage output, but in reallity it is actually average or slightly above average. This is kind of why I think he isn't as broken as people like to make him out to be.
@@Quackra Now that I think about it you're right, I don't know why I overlooked his flaws and just pointed out the things everyone else complains about. And now that I think about it I'm pretty sure he isn't that bad compared to what the other characters can do either. (But I do know the real character who should take his spot are Melee Ice Climbers, since whenever someone mains them it's either wobble to a high percentage and throw, or just flat out use a glitch. And I don't think those glithes I mentioned are banned from tournaments. Maybe they aren't, I don't really know but I think isn't from what I've seen from tournaments that I've seen. And no, they weren't your usual barely known tournaments, they were in fact well known tournaments. But again, I don't know. And there is no way I'm taking back that Ice Climbers aren't broken, they really are.) So at this point I can't really say that he's *That* broken like most people including me say he is. And if anything I think that other characters should take his place, and I'm sure they have way less flaws than him with more than overpowered little moves (Like Marth with his unnecessarily large grab range, his Chaim grabbing and his combo game. Or Jigglypuff and her rest that could most likely will at like 35%.) So that you do mention it he isn't all that broken, and again, there are characters who have more pros than cons, and I'm pretty sure he has plenty of cons that I've let fly over my head when watching a tournament. So yeah, I guess he isn't as broken as it seems anymore. Especially with your reasoning and facts over mines. (And I kinda feel a little dumb for overlooking ALOT of stuff you've pointed out that was right in front of me.)

It is too early to put Ultimate characters in this list, especially since there are much more busted characters to choose from. Peach/Daisy is amazing, but isn't dominating anything, and Pichu, imo, is too big of a double-edged sword to be a consistent contender in competitive play.
Pre-patch Diddy and Brawl ICs should be higher. Having Bayo combos that randomly KO you is nutty, but how about having ICs' inescapable guaranteed death from one grab.

I actually didn’t know that S64 Pikachu’s Thunder (down B) didn’t have a height limit like it does today, and as a Pikachu main, good LORD I can easily imagine how unfair that was back then

A lot of people who are really good have picked him up. Trust me, he's really good, but he isn't broken or even top tier.

Any tall character has trouble against Pichu. You can't hit him with jab, some tilts miss him and air combos are way too hard to land because he is so small. And his air game is insane. There is no way to escape his combos at all.
@@lepyrolink182 Wrong, you can escape some of his combos including lightning loops. As much as you hate hearing this just SDI. Also, use LSI and learn to DI better. You will notice that only about half of Pichu's combos are actually true at that point and that Thunder is not that threatening on stage.
One of the melee fox clips was made using a hacked version of the game that allows Turbo Mode, aka being able to cancel any attack into anything. Melee fox is not as fast as shown on that clip.

sorry man not turbo, just tas with really well done sdi. if you slow the clip down they never cancel a move into another like you would in turbo, they just have really specific sdi and are constantly trading hits. still not legit fox play, but not a hacked game.

I have done a few tas projects and despite having to use an emulator to do them, using a vanilla game iso is almost always standard unless it is for some mod showcase video or something. TAS =/= hacking, just emulator tools which allow you to save and load gamestates which inject nothing into the code of the game itself.

I don’t know about melee fox being so high up. Yes he is a strong character and a lot of people pick him, but with all of his strengths he also has his weaknesses and they’re pretty bad ones too. Fox is combo fodder, and many players have taken down top level foxes with lower tier characters. Melee fox takes an insane amount of skill to get to a level where he is considered broken which is why I don’t feel like he deserves a spot on the list. They should’ve put in melee ice climbers in instead. You can literally get four grabs and nothing else to win the game, plus they have a glitch that can freeze the opponent in place. That move is even banned from use. A broken character should be one that can be the most easily exploited like bayo or Diddy, not the character with the highest skill ceiling.
Yeah but theres a reason why hes so good. A perfectly played Fox vs any other perfectly played character Fox will always win. Thats why hes so good. The fact that his only weakness is human error and not anything else is absurd.
To argue that a character is broken because when they are played “perfectly” they beat everyone else is absurd. No one can play perfectly in melee, it’s just not humanly possible so it shouldn’t even be an argument. Even if people could play a character perfectly, Marth outrages fox by a wide margin and can deal with him before he even gets close. If Marth is played perfectly then he can destroy anyone. There are many characters that when played “perfectly” can chain grab to death. Pikachu can chain grab fox to death, ice climbers can wobble literally any character infinitely. Yes fox is the best character, but that’s natural for a fighting game to have one that stands out as the strongest, but he is by no means broken.

You missed the point. My argument was that you can’t consider someone broken when to exploit them you have to play beyond a human level. With that logic, pretty much every character in melee could be considered in some respects broken. Perfect computers aren’t used to play smash, humans are, so when deciding on which characters are strong, weak, broken, viable etc. we have to use criteria based on human levels of ability and proficiency, not artificial, computer based criteria.
Just because Fox is technically demanding doesn't mean he isn't broken. He invalidates more than half the cast, is the most dominant character in the meta by far, etc. Fox is cool, Fox is hard to play, and good Fox players deserve respect, but that doesn't mean he isn't fucking busted lmao
