I volunteer at a zoo that has cheetahs. I said to myself, “What the hell was that family thinking?” Cheetahs may be more flight than fight, but they are still dangerous wild animals. That family is lucky they didn’t get hurt.
This is a totally ridiculous behaviour of these French tourists. I have been to this Safari Park many times, to watch the animals in a more or less natural environment and it's exciting. But, at the entrance of the park you are warned to keep windows closed, doors locked and not to get out of the car. It's done in 4 languages because no tourist speaks or read Dutch, except the 17 millions of Dutch people themselves. But even without a written warning it should be obvious not to do what these people did.
They need to have signs with pictures on them and to let the tourists know anyone filmed getting out of their cars will be fined. How to fine them? They can either choose to put a refundable $200 deposit down before driving into the grounds or put their credit card on file. If they are filmed breaking the rules, $200 is forfeited or $200 gets charged on their card. Simple. 90% of hotels do that, this park can do the same for the safety of the animals.
Try to explain to the child why, after something like this, he now álso has to lose his mom and dad. It didn't happen in America. People like this get counseling in Europe.

Cheetahs aren't naturally aggressive and are very unlikely to attack a human. There are no records of a cheetah ever killing a person (that's partly because we're very big and powerful and it would be difficult for a cheetah to kill an adult human in the first place. But they certainly could kill a child). This couple probably provoked a reaction by wandering into the middle of them. If they'd stayed by their car, they might have been okay.

They could have killed them easily if they had gone ahead with the attack. It's the instinct of all predators to weight the potential of an injury vs. going for the meal. They see humans all the time, but aren't familiar with killing/battling humans, and thus weren't sure of what damage a human might be able to inflict, so they played it cautious. Though undoubtedly, had that family had been a lot further away from their car, the Cheetahs probably would have continued their attack until they found an opening to bounce and grab the boy.
So glad someone made the decision to sit in their car and video this instead of yelling at the idiots, laying on their horn etc. despite the sheer stupidity of the parents that risked their children’s as well as their own lives, stepping up to avoid a potential loss of life should be more important than filming it.

However, if it was downright stupidity that brought them in the situation, then I am convinced that you'd do more harm to the child by ruining his life and taking him away from his parents for a long time, having him stay with strangers, compared to coming around and giving the parents some counseling.
And you seem to be focussed on the wellbeing of the kid a lot...so doing that, wouldn't be the best for him.

Obviously they could be schooled and the way you are suggesting that losing your parents (whether temporarily or not) at age 5 is good for building character and soul, is ridiculous and makes me a bit sick to my stomach.

Cheetahs aren't naturally aggressive and are very unlikely to attack a human. There are no records of a cheetah ever killing a person (that's partly because we're very big and powerful and it would be difficult for a cheetah to kill an adult human in the first place. But they certainly could kill a child). This couple probably provoked a reaction by wandering into the middle of them. If they'd stayed by their car, they might have been okay.

They could have killed them easily if they had gone ahead with the attack. It's the instinct of all predators to weight the potential of an injury vs. going for the meal. They see humans all the time, but aren't familiar with killing/battling humans, and thus weren't sure of what damage a human might be able to inflict, so they played it cautious. Though undoubtedly, had that family had been a lot further away from their car, the Cheetahs probably would have continued their attack until they found an opening to bounce and grab the boy.
