Well Lexus are selling it as a new car. In order to fully test the difference in years is to test each different land cruiser from yesteryears to today or disco 3 with disco 5 and see if terrain response has really changed that much. LR 3 was when they shown off their new software.

The range rover does not go a couple hundred thousand miles easily. 5 land rovers in our group all have had their motors replaced at the 120k mark or less. The v8 4.7 motor has hit over 500 k miles repeatedly. Those motors are totally different even though their hp ratings are close. The 4.7 will out climb, out run, out tow and out last the PS land rover motor. The only decent thing on the land rover is its 4wd system.
the 2021 4runner still uses same engine (4L V6), transmission (A750F), suspension/frame, ATRAC, etc. from 2003 4runner, and I am not saying as this is bad thing
Hey Tommy- LR4 owner (although I have the HD package). I’ve found the snow setting is really for snowy or icy on road driving. It won’t let you rev bc it is designed to start in a higher gear and doesn’t turn of the traction control to prevent you from spinning tires like most numnuts do and getting dug in and stuck or losing control. When offroad in snow put in mud/ruts- that should turn off traction control, will put in low range, and will properly adjust throttle for slippery offroad conditions. You have a nice driving technique for the 4 wheel drive system- mild to moderate but consistent throttle input so that the power stays to the wheels while the computer figures out where to apply brakes and where to send power. One of the thingsI find when I’m offroading with jeepers is my when I start spinning my spotter will tell me to stop, which is exactly the opposite of what to do with the LR. I keep doing what you do and it figures it out and claws it’s way up or out and I always get these looks of amazement. Lol. It’s pretty funny. Love the vids.
When climbing with the LR3, you should disable the DSC. It would than rev up. Also with those old Terrain Response Systems, you have to give a bit of gas in order to speed up their response. With the right driving, the LR3/LR4 are pretty much unstopable. Unless they break!
You guys deserve a lot of respect for what you are doing the address so many issues with real world tests and measurements. Also we have to show some respect to the manufacturers participating and working with you guys at TFL to make major improvements and raising the bar.
Toyota hasn't meaningfully updated any of them in almost 15 years. So they'd be the same. The last real ground up new model GX/4runner/prado was in 2002 as a 2003 model year. So you'd have to go back at least 20 years to find something that's different from current in a meaningful way. The lx updated in 2007. So a 15yr old lx would be a little different.
Erick Torres incorrect, it won’t allow you to spin the tyres up with dsc activated. Terrain response will not over rule that for safety reasons you have to manually do it.
The GX 460 is very capable. I would love to bring my 2013 up there and run that trail with your Land Rover. I'm confident that it wouldn't have any issues.
I still like the old school off-road with the solid axles and none of that Subaru symmetrical crap you need real lockers ground clearance and proper tires
THE WOFFORDS solid axles are outdated and a thing of the past unless you are 1) A Truck (don’t mean pick up I mean an actual truck/lorry/semi etc), 2) A trailer or 3) Doing serious manic off-roading the likes of which most vehicles simply can’t attempt. The terrain response in the disco is designed not to just let the engine over rev. The more you spin the tires the more it loses traction. Its a brilliant piece of kit! Love that disco!

Land rover has had better tech since the beginning. If they were reliable they would be worth more than Toyota's because when they work they are better vehicles in every way. I'm a huge Toyota fan, I had a 1985 4runner, a 2005 Tacoma, and a 2006 Tundra but they are all gone and my 2004 discovery 2 is still here. The GX460 is secretly NOT a Land Cruiser 200 shown. Also I love Gx460, but actually the LR3 has a lot of tech the GX doesn’t. Air suspension, independent suspension all round, 3 diff locks. It will be interesting to how their traction control compares.
Awesome! could you do a video on old crossovers/SUVs(2009-2015 ish) that are still good on snow? This would be great for people on a budget/new college graduates that are looking for good all around cars with a small price tag.
Lexus needs to offer a true off-road version of the GX. A production version of the GXOR would sell like crazy. It would destroy Land Rover and might even compete with Rubicon Wrangler for buyers. There are plenty of people who would pay for that kind of luxury and off-road performance. I'd love to have a GX if the approach and departure angles didn't suck and it didn't have granny steps killing the break over angle.
It’s not a Land Cruiser , secretly it’s more like the 4Runner ! It’s badges as Land Cruiser Prado elsewhere with a different Powertrain but it’s not a Land Cruiser 200 .
Saad Khan there are two varieties of the Land Cruiser, the 200 series and the Prado. The GX is a rebadged Prado. The 4Runner shares the same chassis as the Prado but that is it. So they are correct in saying that this is secretly a Land Cruiser. And Yes, the LX 570 is also a Land Cruiser, based on the larger 200 series.
Sorry but the Discovery didn’t need Low Range to get up the Steps. I’ve noticed on a few videos that people always seem to jump to immediately engaging low range and 1st gear as soon as they encounter anything and in reality you mostly don’t need it. Low range is really only required for very challenging conditions and even when used should sometimes use 2nd or 3rd gear low range. When you plump for 1st gear low range you have gone as low as possible and left yourself nothing to fall back on. By staying in high range until needed or selecting a higher gear in low range you still have room to move. Aeroplanes don’t lift of on full throttle, usually 80% to leave some capacity in case it’s needed for any reason. Same with cars - use the lowest setting you need, not always the lowest possible. 2WD vehicles can actually negotiate many so called 4WD tracks it’s typically only the tyres and/or ground clearance that let you down. I’ve taken 2WD cars down many a 4WD only track no issues - you just have to know what you’re doing and not go further than the vehicles limits. Also comparing price is pointless. You need to compare prices when new. The Land Rover probably cost $70k new also and is the better off-roader especially when you consider the age/tech difference.
Cool part about the Land Rover is that those all terrains are probably the most "street" ones out there and aren't all that great off road compared to BFG A/T's
You want a GXOR with a power rear window. We all want that but they will never make it. It would steal sales from the TRD Pro 4Runner and they won't let that happen.
@@thivakarsaravanamuthu4744, the 4Runner doesn't have the V8 or the land cruiser goodies that come on the GX. Don't get me wrong, the TRD Pro 4Runner is great but the GXOR is way better.
Can't stand buttons and switches on the horizontal surface of the console. Only a matter of time before somebody spills their big gulp down into the electronics. They also collect crud and it is impossible to keep clean.
I bet the owners manual will tell you that snow mode will start the vehicle in 2nd and lower the throttle response. That will help keep the tires from spinning when starting on slick roads. You definitely should have picked a different mode.
Eat Jat I was trying to point out the reason the engine wasn’t Reving when tommy was climbing the hill in the Land Rover was because he chose this mode that kills the throttle response and starts the vehicle in second gear. I understand why 2nd gear starts are beneficial on road but it would not be ideal off road.
I was watching very closely. It seems like Land Rover's electronics hates steering. When Tummy turned the steering wheel the wheels in the air acted like if brakes no longer grabbed them. I think the vehicle was thinking that driver was about to make a turn and stopped blocking spinning wheels
I almost got this lex gx. But wife wanted the Silverado hd instead. They are great lil old school inside, but you know it'll last for years. Tfl it's a 4 runner equivalent why not try a Toyota 4 runner Ted or off road version. They have more front clearance and can beat the bricks off of Rover. Great workfellas
Anthony Broski your clearly showing the world your not from California, but most likely from some 3rd World Clusterfuck where you really use Land Rovers for off-roading! We use them for trips to the Grocery Store & Kids Soccer Games that’s it ! They still fall apart without off-roading though.. the insurance junkyards will show you
I will say one thing its a lot easier finding a Used LR3 than finding a Used LX or Land cruiser cause all the toyota LCs in my area are 20k and up even for the 20year old versions. Might even be worth finding a used LR3 and putting some money into making sure things wont fail or break and keep it for 5 or 6 years
Is it possible to have solid axles and have the tech that these independent suspension vehicles (Toyota, Land Rover) have? A Power Wagon with torque vectoring would be unstoppable.
Biggest issue with the GX make a trim without the low hanging bumper and steps. They would be so much better with improved approach and departure angles.
I am wondering why they used the sport trim instead of using the luxury trim. The sport trim has the grey moulding that makes the front bumper lower - Poor angle of approach.
Well that was pretty Awesome.. Lots of spinning wheels in this one...Worth watching again..Great job Roman n Tommy☺
Just bought the ‘20 GX460 with off road package in January. Very happy with it so far
gx460 is awesome 👌 👏 👍🏽
The Gx height suspension is mainly for the back to level out if you’re towing
And more to the point, since they were using it because of approach angle concerns, raising the rear air suspension actually reduces the approach angle by a couple degrees. It made it worse (although it helps with departure angle for the rear bumper to clear when climbing up the stair).

3 locking diffs beat 'tech'. Every. Single. Time. Throw in some good old fashion solid axle articulation while you're at it if you please.
This be a interesting test the old Land Rover Discovery LR3 vs the new Land Rover Defender 110
This vehicle as well as the LX are not air suspension....they are hydraulic thankfully.
This is why old is always superior not to mention all the tech to go bad and complicated modifications
You think the older Landrover is more reliable than the Lexus GX?
@@Mike-cz2yw no
Awesome! could you do a video on old crossovers/SUVs(2009-2015 ish) that are still good on snow?
Strangely, here in the UK many moons ago, it was called the Toyota Colorado and came with a 3L diesel.... :)
i would normallysay im earrly, but thanks to quarantine ive been here for the past couple of weeks
You're not afraid to focus on flaws. Sometimes I wonder why they keep giving you press cars.
DEAR LEXUS: I would buy a GX if the Tailgate had a Power Rear Window, No Running Board/Molding, More Clearance on the front Approach Angle...
You want a GXOR with a power rear window. We all want that but they will never make it. It would steal sales from the TRD Pro 4Runner and they won't let that happen.
Get the 4 runner then ?
@@thivakarsaravanamuthu4744, the 4Runner doesn't have the V8 or the land cruiser goodies that come on the GX. Don't get me wrong, the TRD Pro 4Runner is great but the GXOR is way better.
Great comparison! In the last slip test, was the LR3 at offroad height? If so that's a surprising amount of articulation it still had!
You do have the LR3 in sand, dirt, snow while you go rock crawling...genius.
Can't stand buttons and switches on the horizontal surface of the console. Only a matter of time before somebody spills their big gulp down into the electronics. They also collect crud and it is impossible to keep clean.
Great video guys! I believe snow mode is for the street when all 4 tires are on even ground. Love the Rover, it's a beast.
Yes, in deep snow on a trail I find little use for 'snow mode'.
Love that land rover so much
Snow mode is for highway only. I've made this mistake also. For deep snow etc are sand or mode modes better.
You should have done Lexus GX 470 vs Lexus GX 460.
That lexus interior looks very dated
Surprised the Land Rover hadn’t fallen apart, that Lexus will never..
Corey Adams So ignorant. You are showing the world your off-road knowledge.
Anthony Broski your clearly showing the world your not from California, but most likely from some 3rd World Clusterfuck where you really use Land Rovers for off-roading! We use them for trips to the Grocery Store & Kids Soccer Games that’s it ! They still fall apart without off-roading though.. the insurance junkyards will show you
The reason we don't have the Prado isn't because we are "unworthy". It's just that we have the 4runner instead.
I love the editing in this video!
That was great. I would have stopped the Lexus at the same spot. Makes me miss Colorado. My 2" lifted KL with Ko2s would be awesome there.
I really envy you guys, driving all kind of cars, SUV´s, pick-up trucks... best job you can find. Great job you guys do, awesome.
well the one ur showing is the american spec but the actual lx and gx has a lot of trim levels which dont hav those extra bumpers
The Prado VX and VX-L gave centre and rear diffs, a different bumper with better approach angles
I will say one thing its a lot easier finding a Used LR3 than finding a Used LX or Land cruiser cause all the toyota LCs in my area are 20k and up even for the 20year old versions. Might even be worth finding a used LR3 and putting some money into making sure things wont fail or break and keep it for 5 or 6 years
For 2021 you guys should consider doing another TFL Pro vehicle, except this time using a Lexus.
Do you keep the DSC on or off when you are off-roading in special programs?
OFF every time!
Ahh yes, the Lexus center console and infotainment from the 90's at a 72k price tag. Bravo Lexus 😕
At least you won't feel the need to replace it every two years like your cell phone :P
@@nothingtoseaheardammit haha yeah
Haha was thinking the same thing
Bravo! Exactly. Because not everybody loves piano gloss plastic, cheap switchgear and cheesy touch screens in the cockpit.
@@yelapa999 he was being sarcastic 😂 that Lexus interior looks ancient
Shopping for a 3-5 year used 460 and will be slapping a cbi bumper on it for sure.
The GX 460 is based off the 4runner in the US and the LX 570 is based off the Land cruiser.
That lexus is hardly new to begin with
Is it possible to have solid axles and have the tech that these independent suspension vehicles (Toyota, Land Rover) have? A Power Wagon with torque vectoring would be unstoppable.
'Pretty face' on the Lexus?? Even its mother wouldn't kiss it.
