How to Make a Cold Air Intake from OEM Ford Parts | 1995 Ford F150

  • Your truck needs cold fresh air to make more horsepower or consistent horsepower. Sometimes the factory intake tube doesn’t draw from the coldest air source. K&N CAIs suck hot air from the engine bay through a high flow/more porous filter. Both options aren’t good for performance or efficiency. If you have a 5.0/302 or 5.8/351 engine you need this intake tube. It’s from either a 4.9 or 460 engine.
    #f150 #coldairintake #bronco
    Part# F3TE 9A675 BB
    The intake on these OBS Fords is pretty simple. Air comes in through the pre-filter intake tube and enters the air box or filter box. It passes through the paper filter (sometimes K&N OEM) and through the MAF (mass air flow sensor). In older truck, there was the speed density system that measured air. Once it passes the air measuring sensor, it travels down the intake tube to the Y collector piece featured in this video and into the throttle body (TB). The throttle body also contains the IAC (idle air control valve and EGR (exhaust gas recirculation valve), and throttle position sensor. Then it’s through the intake plenum to the piston chamber where the air combines with the fuel for a controlled burn to make horsepower!

    But
    On a stock unmolested 96 4.9
    The grill is solid at the inlet point and there's a heavy rubber wind deflector blocking the air path to the inlet, which is turned away from that air flow anyway, and forcing it through the radiator.
    Cutting the curve off may help, but to get any real benefit you would need to modify or replace the front grill

    • @TheMinuteMasters

    • @stanb990

      @@rogerfarmer8919 I have the 4.9 so I already have the ductwork.
      The heavy rubber piece I'm talking about is just to the left and mounted to that support.
      That rubber piece is meant to deflect the air away from the intakes, which honestly makes little sense to me because the solid part of the grill is directly in front of the intake..
      It seems that simply forcing the rubber piece to the left would force air into the intake
      Or maybe remove the rubber flap and add some sort of aluminum or plastic scoop
      The duct will still be curved but air will be funneled in so maybe it'll make up for that

    Great tip. Just found your channel and subscribed and belled! However my ‘89 F150 Custom is a 4.9 i6 so it must have that set up already. • @TheMinuteMasters

      Thanks man!🤙 I appreciate it! That’s true. Honestly you can leave the curved piece there. Scientifically, I don’t know if it does much to cut it away but in terms of a ram hair set up, it makes sense to cut it away. So that’s up to you. I think once the engine is warmed up, there’s nothing that says the air can be too cold. You just get more dense air which equals more horsepower!😁🤙

    • @MapleMarmite
      @MapleMarmite 2 года назад +1

      Thanks for the info. I was actually thinking of copying a set up I spotted in a junk yard truck a while back. That had two pieces of plumbing pipe coming off the intake and down to the hole behind the grill with two of the metal K&N type cone filters mounted to a bracket there. I like this idea as I live on a dirt road and the air filter fills with dust fairly often and the housing gets leaves etc in it, so the washable cone type seemed a good idea. I could remove the regular air box and then just attach the small filter for the rocker cover tube to the bulkhead somewhere. Question is; does the trunking that’s in there now (assuming I trim the end straight) force the air in better than the cone filters and a couple of pieces of curved plumbing pipe? I know I could use just one cone filter and put a Y in the tubing near the intake but I thought that might cut down the air flow. What are your thoughts on those options? Thanks 👍🏻

    • @TheMinuteMasters
      @TheMinuteMasters  2 года назад +1

      @@MapleMarmite No problem man!🤙 so I generally like to use intake systems that are similar in construction to the factory. I thought about a similar system like you’re saying. The only issue is it technically may add more turns in bands that are not as smooth as the factory system. The other thing to take into account is K&N filters clog faster than paper and does have the same high level of filtration as the paper. What I have seen people use is a filter system from a Polaris UTV. From what I’ve seen the filter is very large and circular and very well self-contained. Then you just pipe the intake to open air. However it’s not a cheap option because those filter set ups are already like $300+.

    • @MapleMarmite
      @MapleMarmite 2 года назад

      Thanks for the reply! I think I’ll stick with the original and just trim the from of the trunking to let a bit more air through. Did you mean K&N ‘doesn’t’ have same level of filtration? Just your wording read more like that’s what you meant and ‘does’ was a typo. Just thinking about wether to change the factory filter to same type but K&N as one of your vids showed better performance from that. But if it’s going to get dirty quicker and not filter as well then maybe I’ll keep the paper ones and change more often - cheap enough on line. Just looking into my IAT sensor now - came up as a code 24 along with 13 and 14. Might try pulling and cleaning it before replacing to see if that helps. Not sure about 13 and 14 yet, though.
      Thanks again for taking time to reply man - appreciate it! 👍🏻

    • @TheMinuteMasters
      @TheMinuteMasters  2 года назад +2

      @@MapleMarmite Happy to help man!🤙 K&N doesn’t filter as well as a paper filter and they flow less than a paper filter as they fill up with dirt. Yes the test showed you get more performance but most people agree that performance is gained with K&N because the filter medium isn’t as fine as the paper.
      I replaced my IAC and that helped a lot. They get pretty dirty after a while.

      Cold air means more power. The theory here is you are locating the intake tube closer to a cold air source. So I’m theory, better than the stock set up and definitely better than a K&N CAI. However, until this is dyno tested, it’s just a theory to give you piece of mind.

    • @jamestapscott9400
      @jamestapscott9400 3 года назад +1

      The 460 and 300 used the same air inlet tube which offers a cleaner, less cluttered look. I have no idea why the 5.0 and 5.8 changed to a more restrictive air inlet tube above the radiator. Possibly less intake noise. Change the flex tube to a straight PVC tube with silicone couplers between the air box and TB for a little better breathing.
      The alternative would be the K&N filter kit which inhales hot air from the Engine compartment.

    • @TheMinuteMasters

      Good question. I’m driven through rainstorms many times now. I think the volume of water and force needed to get it up through the intake, through the filter, and down the intake tube is none existent during normal driving conditions. I could see this intake being an issue if I was to cross a river and a wave of water whipped at the front of the truck.

    I recommend 2 additions. First, drill a drain hole in the bottom of the 460/300 fresh air inlet duct. Second, measure each end of the large flex duct between the air box and throttle body. Go to www.siliconeintakes.com/ and order the appropriate ID silicone couplers for each end, and the applicable size duct, around 3". You can go economical, and purchase a black PVC pipe from the plumber section of a hardware store. Don't forget to purchase 4 clamps. My son performed the above mod on his 5.8 SWB.
