I'd push back against this somewhat. There's a rather cowardly streak in contemporary art of creating art that says _nothing_. It's 'up to you!' to interpret what you want to take away from it. Often it's branded as counter-cultural and avant-garde, but in reality, it's empty. In this emptiness, it's marketable, consumable, lowest-common-denominator- it confronts people with nothing, so is readily appropriated by hegemonic corporate power. You _can't_ interpret it however you want, because the author's intended interpretation is so blatantly spoken in the art itself. Despite this, for those adventurous to plumb it's depths, the tunnel can only lead them in a singular, intentional, direction.

I really like that the voice that speaks what they feel and seems to be the core of why "abigail" wanted to cook in the first place is a fig, one of the earliest cultivated foods by people according to what we currently know about anthropology. it could be a coincidence, but a fig seems like a very specific choice and something you wouldn't typically see in your kitchen, or even, say, your average cooking video on youtube or tiktok
People say Jack relies on the quirky aspect of his music to be considered a good singer. Jack really does sing beautifully when you listen for him past the mixing. This video captures that in a wonderful way. 👏👏💚
Even though this video is only a minute and 35 seconds, does anyone feel that it somehow gets longer as you rewatch it. When I first watched it, it seemed to go by pretty fast. On subsequent watches I was more in tune with the repetitive nature of the lyrics, the long pauses without words, and the off putting stares from the salt shakers, Abigail, and the creepy old men in the window. I dont know if this is a coincidence or not but the fig is the only one that does not stare either directly at the camera or even at Abigail. Its almost like he knows the truth of Abigail's predicament but he afraid to say it because he knows the repercussions (Abigail potentially taking her own life). He manages to sneak a peak in when he says PLEASE forgive me, possibly pointing to Abigail not being able to run from her intrusive thoughts/fears/doubts, any longer. Anyways, just an interesting thought I had. This video is art.
Did anyone notice the crossed fingers in the background when the fig comes in at any moment of the video? Crossed fingers usually mean that a person is lying, so the fig might have lied about what he feels.
Actually, only shows it at the lines "that I can't survey any longer". So the misguided hopes are true, but he's lying about not surveying it. He might regret doing it, though. It explains many things for me
@@noel2039 bro, stealing is: take (another person's property) without permission or legal right and without intending to return it. these are just jokes, it doesn't have a property nor legal rights to it, its a joke, chill...
Those creepy old men at the window make it seem to me that although poor Abigail is trying to run an innocent cooking show, the main demographic of her watchers aren't interested in the cooking aspect so much as the hostess herself.
This is definitely the most plausible theory, with the fig saying “your dream to cook is founded on misguided hopes”, as the camera zooms in on an old man in a photo staring at Abigail. And also, the money sliding under the door after the lyrics “pretty apron”. And also, the old man at the beginning making a binoculars gesture with his hands, which has a very stalker-y connotation.
I'm not sure, my theory could be stupid but: I think it's talking about a woman with a dream to cook (or that part could just be a metaphor for any job) but she is selling herself to the producers/ other rich people to get the funding for the show, hence the creepy men watching her, pretty apron "colourful cooking" and the money slipped under the door. That's why the fig (either representing what she actually feels, a close friend or a romantic partner) who is worried for them and knows that they aren't achieving their goal by true means. Either that the only reason people like her show is because she is pretty, not because of her cooking and she is trying to ignore it and the fig is that little part in the back of her head that knows why she actually has successes. oh well! wonderful song none the less, and even if it doesn't have any real meaning its fun to speculate and make your own story to go along with it ^-^
This is also backed up by the end where the egg cracks as eggs are a sign of innocence and youth. Not to mention it's not the men cracking the egg but rather Abigail showing that she led to her own down fall
Honestly one of my favorite things is the way the lip quivers on the fig. It looks so genuinely pained, and seems so genuinely sad for Abigail. It's incredible the emotion Jack can put on a piece of clay fruit.
The salt and the fig represent her feelings. The old men represent the greedy corporation she works for which runs the cooking show. There are things she doesn't like about doing the show, she feels like she lost the reason why she started in the first place. She feels exhausted. She feels like she can't speak up for herself and wonders if she should quit but instead she ignores her feelings. So she keeps doing it for the money and pretending to be happy.
I personally think the salt shakers represent the corporate as it says “purify the figs (her feelings) rot.” The old men represent the viewers I think that only watch her for her looks (“walking around in a pretty apron”) which ads to her unhappiness in her feelings.
Same and I think the fig actually represents her true feelings but the other things like the salt shaker is her pushing those away and continuing the show or it's the greedy corporation keeping and forcing her to continue and pushing her true feelings away
My theory: Abigail has had a interest for cooking ever since she was a child, so with her experience she decided to create her own show about creating and trying different recipes. Everything is fine at first but after awhile Abigail has less motivation for cooking different things almost every single day, to make matters worse her fan base isn't exactly that great either, her fan base consists of old men (not like that's a bad thing) but they only watch her for her "pretty apron" (her body, not her interest for cooking). And since she has less motivation for cooking now she's taking more breaks and less episodes are coming out on her show, so the people who work on her show (the salt shakers) are telling on her feelings about cooking and the show "the fig said something horrible about you" "purify its rot" as in they want her to work more on the show and make more money. The fig represents her feelings about the show and cooking "I can't survey any longer" and "your dream to cook is founded on misguided hopes". But Abigail doesn't listen to the fig and listens to the salt shakers instead, it continues and almost nothing changes. You can see more men watching her through the window and money sliding from under the door, she's motivated by making more money so she continues.
Fig: **being depressed** Salt and sugar cubes: yo Abigail, I think the fig be talking shit Edit (Oct 2021): I made this comment almost a year ago and I still get notifications for it- lmao
Love the theories here. Vibe I get is Abigail's dream might be to have a cooking show or at least entertain, and there are people present who're just in it for looking at her body. They dehumanize her and are distant from the idea of innocent fun and sharing art with others. They also tip well. The fig being honest with her is her own conscience telling her that her dreams are pure but the hopes she for her cooking are not sustainable, but even in feeling that truth she continues to cook despite seeing the reality peeking in at her. If this is the case its about the death of innocence in a young adult.
Well my thought is that Abigail is a housewife who cooks in desire to please her husband, and her negative thoughts towards herself and what she believes others think of her manifests in her ingredients. She obviously slices up those ingredients, as a way of “killing” those negative thoughts or “purifying the rot”, but it never works, and every time she cooks with new things it comes back.

theory: gordan ramsay is making abigail cook for him and giving her some big boy bucks oh yeah and the fig knows the truth that’s great. this is honestly my fav anime
Abigail loved to cook and worked very hard to succeed as a chef. She was found by tv execs (the weird old men) who made more of a spectacle than a cooking show (colorful dinners, pretty apron). The show ironically isn’t really about the food, but it brings in lots of money. The old men watching her are the TV execs making sure she continues to do what she’s supposed to, and the food suffers as a result (sad fig). Even though Abigail makes good money, the show isn’t a true fulfillment of her dreams or representative of her accomplishments.
Abigail suffers with schizophrenia, she wishes she had her own show so she cooks at home and pretends while her grandfather watches over her in case she goes through an episode. He also gives her an allowance since he's probably her only legal guardian and functioning adult in her life. The salt represents her anxiety and the fig represents her depression. The talking with inanimate objects is the schizophrenia.
Notice how, after talking to the Fig, Abigail began receiving money, the old creepy dude appeared more, and her cooking wasn't as good (breaking the eggs wrong, spinning the rolling pin, etc.). Fig's word had an effect on her.
im pretty sure this is not sexual at all. Its just noticing how seemingly innocent shows/personalities are the product of corporate formulas. Abigail's cooking show isnt dependent on her cooking dream, just the money she generates.
This theory seems possible! Because the old guys could actually represent the bosses behind big corporations. If this is actually a symbolic video and not some random video.
Wicked Candy ima have nightmares about the old men cause of my theory dude Here’s a real theory for ya I thinks it’s about sexualizing little girls and the “pretty apron” symbolized that and the old men are hungry for it 😖
My interpretation: I think this song is about trying to be someone you’re not. I think the man outside the window in the beginning (during the clapping part) is someone related to her, let’s just say it’s her father. So my idea of the story behind this is that Abigail’s father made her get into cooking, and even though it wasn’t her true passion, she was only given that choice. As an adult, she had grown to be an amazing cook, and believed she was happy with her occupation and career. However, when she confronted the fig, he becomes the ‘talisman’ (guide) of this story, basically revealing that she is in fact not happy with her occupation (ex., he says “you’re dream to cook is founded on misguided hopes,” meaning it wasn’t her choice to be a cook, but her father’s, it was _his_ hopes she would become a cook). Then Abigail leaves, and her theme song (I suppose is what I should call it) continues to play. I think this shows how Abigail decided to ignore the fig, and continued doing what she thought she loved. But, the fig’s words find their way into this song, as she now cannot deny she is truly unhappy with her life, realizing so only after this conversation with the fig. Her career spirals into its downfall, as she becomes more and more upset. Then, finally, the egg being destroyed near the end, and then the empty room symbolize how she eventually ‘cracked,’ and quit cooking for good. Wow that’s a lot of writing ;-; Also if you’ve read this far congrats
My therory: I think that abigail is being groomed into marriage with a older man as you can see that she has a younger face and looks like she about 20 while he is all wrinkled and kinda gross to look 40-70. Abigail wants to persue her life as a chef/cook but can’t given her abusive relationship with this older man making it hard for her to cook, the fig saying that “it cant serve any longer” are her true emotions. adding to this theory is that the fig said her dream to cook is all based on “misguided hopes” then shows the old mans face in her cooking photo. In the part where the fig is talking sadly while she is singing represents her life, sad but faking a smile or ignoring her sadness. Then the old man/men come up witch I believe are this abusers comments about her show/dream until everything stops and she quits her dream and settles down with this older man, holding her back from her dreams.
Abigail's show appears to be a normal cooking show where the person in question cracks eggs and whisks stuff to make food, a passion that she loves by the look of things. However, this little fig is said to be saying some horrible things, and when confronted he reveals that he is concerned with the route she is going and that all of what she has accomplished is only coming from the wishes her father, or some kind of tutor, wants for her, a fatuous reality where she is just being pushed to do this to make money, and she might've been blind to this. As the show keeps going, we see the words of the fig leak into the intro, as if the thoughts are bothering her and preventing her from doing what she "loves". She rubs her hands on a rolling pin, whisks sideways, cracks eggs erroneously, as she keeps doing these wrong cooking practices, she attracts the attention of more deformed men, maybe directors or investors of the show. Near the end we see a flash of a meeting with one of the men and then the egg "cracks" and the kitchen is empty, no Abigail, and the dream to cook gone all thanks to the fig. If that's good or not, it can be questioned.
Maybe the crossed fingers are him revealing the lie about the show itself? I mean, everyone keeps saying "crossed fingers are the signs of a lie so the fig's lying", but he's saying her "dream" was a lie, actually.
@soba Its not just female streamers for instance Robert pattson has been sexualized by his fan base since the beginning of his career. Granted it has gotten better for him but its still something he had to deal with.
I thought it was her dad trying to get her to do a useful career but she insists on cooking. She thinks he’s being mean but the fig was his actual feelings that she subconsciously knows.
@@reallifebartsimpson8829 I like that interpretation. Yeah, the fig feels like it more or less embodies the idea of a "concerned friend or family member" could be dad, could be a brother, a close gal pal, etc.

The fig’s part is just so serene to me. The voice jack used is so beautiful

I'm not sure, my theory could be stupid but:
I think it's talking about a woman with a dream to cook (or that part could just be a metaphor for any job) but she is selling herself to the producers/ other rich people to get the funding for the show, hence the creepy men watching her, pretty apron "colourful cooking" and the money slipped under the door.

The man represents her father. 👁
I said a similar theory so sorry for stealing urs we just had a similar one lm4ooooo
Omg thank
Ways to make me clap;
“So no one told ya life was gonna be this way”
“Two time”
“Cooking with Abigail, having such fun”

0:32 JACKS VOICE HERE IS SO BEAUTIFUL ON SO MANY LEVELS
My interpretation:
I think this song is about trying to be someone you’re not.
Wow that’s a lot of writing ;-;
Also if you’ve read this far congrats

Also the money coming from the door is the old man paying her I think

Abigail: *vibing while cooking without paying attention*
Nice, better than those child predator theories.
