I have one of these. It is probably the nicest little dual bander I've had in 6 decades of playing radio (and maybe 20 years of playing with VHF and UHF). It performs well in town or out in the country & I've used it to go SOTA when traveling too. Deff a keeper in this shack.
I wasn't ready to drop a bunch of money on a mobile radio just yet. I have three HTs at the moment and saving up money for some mobile that I can also use as a base. I went to a local hamfest and I couldn't resist the AnyTone 778UV for $50.00 (brand new). I have found several RUclips channels to help program and even a cheat sheet. So far, this thing has been great as a base station for now. I will most likely get something a little more stout later this summer, but for now, this will work. I am new to amateur radio and still learning.
I have just bought this radio, and it does not disappoint. What DOES disappoint though is the fact that you can no longer programme it with the software because they are no longer compatable with each other.
Are you using Chirp software as that is working, Have you told the software the correct com port or have you downloaded the driver for the cable as it can problematic?
Thanks for the informative video VK. Ive downloaded user manual and looked at specs that state # recieve 400.0000 ~ 490.0000 MHz Transmit 420.0000 ~ 450.0000 MHz . So no tx on Aussie uhf cb channels. So some confusion after reading comments saying it will tx on uhf cb . Will it transmit on aussie UHF out of the box after manual programming of cb frequency inputs without the use of sofware / cable or firmware mods ? Essentially is it usable as UHF 80 channel radio out of the box ? Thanks
I have an 878 it’s the best sniffer for other radio signals even out of the Hammans I’ve picked up a lot of security services and they don’t even know what channel are transmitting on! Well I am blind so I wish it would talk to me
Just brought me one of these little fullas .but I was not aware I had to have it programmed so haven't had the change to use it yet I'm in the Lismore NSw area and I will have to find someone that can program it for me
Hi VK, great info, just wondering can these be programmed to the same 80ch UHF channels rather than buying a specific Uniden or other for the 4x4? We and many other 4x4 guys currently use 27mhz AM/SSB CBs, but need the UHF to have as backup coms. Also, who repairs CBs in Perth? Cheers and subscribed 👍
@@vkradio1656 Cheers for that info. Where do you think is the best place to purchase one (more in future) of these and an Anytone 6666. Do you have a facebook page up?
Have a couple of friends out there in Perth... anyways when using this radio have you put it on an actual meter to see if it's actually doing the power wattage out correctly as advertised.. just curious cuz I really need something that does about 20 watts to get into some of the repeaters I use I mean I can manage with 15ish Watts but 20 would be my Baseline
Hiya I’ve got one of these radios ! I’m also a VK6 but mines does not have DTMF so I can’t use EchoLink ! Is yours the same ? The buttons on the mic don’t make the usual tones when pressed Thanks colin
Problem is you never know when there's a signal if the radio stays quiet. My other radio heard intermod but just squaks and chirps .I couldn't hear a repeater 7 miles away I could clunk it but not hear it...ke6iev
I need your help concerning this radio I am constantly having an issue. It will randomly make this loud static pattern then every two seconds it keys a fast static burst like something is sending out a burst signal I can't figure out how to fix it
The one thing I do not like about these is the parasitic battery draw when turned off. It'll drain your battery. The 779UV has less front panel features but is a better radio with no parasitic draw.
Hello, Yes I did but the Anytone is miles front I believe, great screen and easy to use with all function buttons programmable to suit however the user wants it set up,just a great radio and dual band is a bonus considering the size. Easy on the ear and the screen is fantastic for the size.
scan function on these radios does not work, no matter what setting you use CO, TO, SE and a delay setting of 5 10 or 15 seconds when the receiving signal drops off the radio resumes scan immediately . so you will not hear any responses if just monitoring in scan mode sent emails to vendors and maker with no answers on this issue, its clear it is a firmware problem with the 778uv
Try using it in a medium rf environments it overloads front end ,its a intermediate disaster ,I heard nothing for days and knew I should hear local repeaters ,so ftm 400 same ant I heard my buddys simplex 40 miles away ,,,,anytone nothing no not one signal ,I was 5 miles from TV transmitter but even 10 miles out still overload ,don't even try it in a city area it'll just sit there no nothing ,I tried over and over same results it was literally useless. Ke6iev bought mine in 2018 ish loved display but again go try it in city it won't hear anything unless signal is ultra strong...maybe they use a better filter now but I'd never try it again a b test with yaesu ftm heard signal after signal on yaesu nothing on anytone
Great video thinking of buying one for my first video

For $50 brand new that’s a steal.
Looks interesting will be checking out the spec. Thanks for video
Great radio mate, easy to program, easy to use, easy to read the screen.
Great informative video. Does this radio allow transmitting on CB 476 477mhz here in Aus or is it receive only?
Yes, its does UHF CB transmit too. Thanks for watching.👍👍

Can you use this radio for GMRS, can you program the radio for those channels?
AT-779 will do that
