Feed the Beast, Harley Air Cleaners Can Make or Break Your Build
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 13 сен 2024
- Your Harley air cleaner does more than just filter air, it's all about the amount of air it feeds the engine. The air cleaner is one of the first purchases made for your new Harley-Davidson but a lot of us don't put a lot of thought into future upgrades. Most Harley air cleaners in the catalog will work just fine on future upgrades, but if you go to next level with your engine they can become restrictive. Unlike fuel injectors and carbs you can't go too big with the air cleaner. On the other hand too small of a air cleaner or too much of the element covered can restrict air flow and hold the engine back!

Have you done an air cleaner swap on your bike for gains in power?
I put on an Arlen Ness super sucker. Then I watched a video on air cleaners from DK Products. So I put one of theirs on. The 587. I think I'm must be highly suggestable. This is the vid that persuaded me. Thanks GF. You have the best content around.
ruclips.net/video/xP7wxWQmSa8/видео.html
I primarily went with the fuelmoto on my '21 flsl so i can vent (drill and tap for fittings) the heads outside the air cleaner.
Using a S&S stealth on my twin cam & a S&S G with teardrop on the shovelhead
I first had an s&s stealth on an 07 ultra 96...worked well...now I have a 14 street glide with a larger screaming eagle...works well also..forgot to mention the s&s was in conjunction with a stage 2..ie cam etc..the screaming eagle was done with the whole 9 yards...big bore...heads..cam..timken conversion etc.
Nope. Just for looks.
Edit: went with ventilator extreme. I assume it will flow enough air?
This man has a lot of knowledge and shared freely.
He is appreciated. The more comments the better b
Thank you, I really appreciate it!
His content is always worth the time to listen. Also I find his perspective on the money.
@@carlbruhn1772 I know, I literally stop what I'm doing when I see his videos populate on my feed!
Hands down, you are the best Harley Davidson info channel out there. I think I have viewed them all, some two or three times and saved all twin cam related ones for future references. Two thumbs way up Brother 👍👍
I appreciate the hell out of that and thank you for supporting the channel!
I agree! He has a way with explaining that really makes since to me. And he doesn’t say F*ck every other word. Thanks for that!
You seem to answer all the questions I have regarding my bike. Keep up the great work.
Glad to hear it! We appreciate the support on the channel!
Thank you for, no pun intended, clearing the air on air cleaners. As always great subject and video, keep them coming!
😆😂👍 nice! I appreciate it and thank you for the support!
I just went with the V&H tuner, slip-ons and Screaming Eagle/K&N filter and couldn't be more pleased. The first time I kicked up to 2nd gear it's like "Darn, tighten your grip on the handle bars 'cause she wants to go!" Day and night difference. Out on the highway the performance improvement was more subtle but definitely noticeable. From 0 to 70MPH with the stock configuration you could feel the bike was working to get there, not lugging or struggling, just a little bit "working". After the stage one upgrade and new map it's so smooth, I would say effortless for the M8 kinda like "is that all you got".
I tuned my bone stock bike with a FP3 using the improved stock map just out of curiosity and it was night and day too! It makes a huge difference when you get some fuel in those bikes, especially the M8's! I'd imagine your overall rideability has improved quite a bit too!
Since I subscribed awhile back I have not found a more informative Harley tech channel, even if it's a subject I'm not doing you make it enjoyable and easy for the average person to understand. Great Job!
Thank you! I really appreciate that!
I wonder why people don’t talk more about rerouting those crankcase gases back out of the air intake when you install your high flow breather? I got a catch can setup with my 587 breather from DK customs and it’s absolutely awesome! Some of the best $$ spent on my bike. Easy to install and what a difference with my xl-vied’s and a set of slip ons to complete my stage 1. Made a night and day difference in my bike. Brought that evo engine to life!
Added a heavy breather on my carbed 2006 Custom XL Sportster 1200. Jetted it; pilot from 42 to 48 and main from 170 to 180. Still not much faster, but it sure as hell gets there a whole lot quicker.
Slip ons are only ok in touring models up into 2017. The restrictive catalytic converter is in the head pipe. In other models the cat is in the mufflers so slip ons open it up like normal. It's model specific.
Touring guys got screwed on that deal having to replace the head pipe, plus the placement of that cat was just awful. Those head pipes would get stupid hot with that cat in there.
I want to eventually put lower fairings on my Road Glide and I've been running the Screamin Eagle heavy breather on it for years. The problem I have now is that lower fairings aren't compatable with a heavy breather. So that's something else to consider. I wish that I had just put an S&S Stealth air cleaner on it back in the day when I bought it. Now I have a Stealth on order to use with either OEM lowers, or Big Bear Performance FXRP style lowers (those are probably what I'll go with).
Good info I've always put the arleness big sucker on every bike I've ever had always had good results
I live in Florida it gets to 17 30’s and I still rode 50 miles to work and back home. Always enjoy the ride
Right on!
Can’t wait till after the 19th my crate 131 get installed
Was originally looking at a cam upgrade on my 1999 TC88 (which currently has SE cams) because I needed to replace the chain tensioners and I was looking for a little more power. Your video's enlightened me to the issues of the throttle body runner restrictions, Magneti Marelli fuel injection limitations, etc., which saved me a lot of money and headaches! Thank you for the great content! Keep up the great work!
Thank you, I really appreciate it! If you've got the MM FI I would run with you have now if it's working, carb conversion is always a great option if you ever have a issue with the FI. But changing over you're cam chest wouldn't be a problem if you leave the same cams in there.
Planning on leaving it alone until I have a lot more money saved up to do a FI upgrade, along with bigger cams and other upgrades.
Before doing anything easy check the tuning requirements. Usually guys start bolting stuff on and find out later that it takes more money to retune.
I just recently did a Bassani Road Rage 3 and S&S Air Cleaner along with a Powervision tune on my 103 and I was pleasantly surprised with the gains. Making 81hp and 105ft/lbs.
Damn those are really good numbers! Bassani makes a excellent exhaust system, that's some killer numbers. Is that with stock cams too?
@@GixxerFoo Completely stock cams! I wanna get that done as soon as I have it paid off.
My LRS 21 is running the stock air box with KN filter, cr483 cam, dnd pipe, injectors and making 127hp. You only need a premium filter not the whole thing!
That's pretty impressive with the stock air box!
I have 3 HD's. I put an Arlen Ness Velocity 65 on my HD 48 sporty. Looks bad a*s and I felt the gain on the first run! Gets lots of looks and praise. I sooo badly want to install one on my Street Glide , as well. Problem is... it is so poorly engineered that I have lost the filter twice while riding. Looks great, performs great, but can't keep it together 🤔
Zippers has a great selection. Like you said, go biggest… it won’t hurt if the engines too small and, you’ll have it when you need it if, you go bigger👍🏻
Zippers does have a huge selection, they are hard to beat for a one stop shop!
Great video, again! I can vouch for today's topic. When I was getting my bike tuned, the tuner called me up and said my Ventilator a/c was killing power. He recommended a SS Stealth for my 110" upgrade. Bam...4 more hp for $199. BTW, the video's closing fart sounds very impressive with some volume and a set of headphones!! Ride Safe!
That's awesome to hear! That proves it's just not all in my head lol. Not only 4 more horsepower but I bet it smoothed out your power curve as well.
Wud up Foo! My 2002 Night Train built has had multiple AC's, everything from the traditional S&S teardrop, Kuryakyn's etc. With any aftermarket AC, I usually find myself loosening my heads and throttle body, installing the housing and tightening back up for perfect air tight alignment, all is good, for the most part. Now my stock AC back plate is the old one without the built in breather channels, it has the nipples for the breathers so I can run hoses to bypass this. I also found that the OEM back plate fits on my Mikuni42 perfectly, so I run a K&N with a brass Arlen Ness cover, this has given me the best results with being air tight. The newer NOS early TC back plates have the built in breather channels, no bueno unless you don't mind hot oily air being recycled into your engine. Fuel injection can mask leaks but with a carb, if you are not %100 air tight, she'll let you know. People sometimes believe bigger is better, when in fact sometimes, going to a bigger throttle body will produce higher HP numbers but rob you of street torque.
Air leaks are one of the biggest robbers of power and you're absolutely correct fuel injection can mask that! Sounds like you've run just about every air cleaner combo you can, best thing you can do with any air cleaner is for sure routing those crank case breathers to atmosphere!
@@GixxerFoo Right on Foo
I always run a louvered kit from lowbrow customs. Ran great on my last dyna, fxdx with 11.5:1, hot cams and race heads. Always carbureted as well
Those are some awesome looking covers, LowBrow has some bad ass products.
I'm getting ready to change my throttle body out I would love to see the video on your throttle bodies.
I'm a firm believer you get what you pay for, I ended up with the K&N filter and an Arlen Ness setup with a air cleaner cover that matches my front wheel. It looks nice and performs extremely well.
All said and done it was a little over $400
On my 2021 Tri Glide, I added American Custom headers with cat removed, American Custom slip-ons that are pretty much open. I put 4 inch baffles in the mufflers and added a SE air box with stock cover plus tuner. The trike runs great and much less heat getting rid of the converter. What you think?
Thank you Mr. Knowledge House. My dealer said those exact words as he explained to much air is no good,, so just open the stock heavy breather. And when I pushed back based on what I learned on your channel 💯, he then said the cleaner would be a problem ergonomiclu. I purchased the Trask Assault the same day. It adapts to the larger throttle body, thus growing with me build.
I think it's time to divorce my HD Warranty. I like the people there, I'm just headed in a different direction and I don't take kindly to someone telling me what I can and cannot do with the bike I purchased. This is where I'm at now, in preparation for something serious from Moonshine or Rattler. So at this point a SE tune for the sake of warranty is pointless. Which tune do you recommend for that 22XE?
Wood 22XE, S&S plate, pump, lifters, cam barring, tappet cuffs, Fuel Moto rods, Trask external breather and M8 Check-Mate...I will use a catch can for both to address vacuum. TBR Shorty Turnout, I will take the minor ding on low-end torque. 14" bars w/ 2" diameter, and Lucky Speed Shop shorty trigger levers.
2020 Fat Boy 🦅 of a 🪶
With everything you have going on I would go with PowerVision, if you get it from FuelMoto they will send you a tune for your setup you currently have. If you make changes you can contact them for a updated tune if you add a cam. Those files are great starting point but of course a good dyno tune session is gonna be the best. It's not worth putting money in the warranty approved parts if you're looking at going in the aftermarket direction!
@@GixxerFoo thanks for the detailed response. I know you've got alot going on.
One reason I will miss working at a Harley Dealership. In Manassas years ago , had access to parts and could figure out different types of are cleaners. Knowing back then bike where carb ones. Not like now where you Can give em all the Air you can , seeing the Fuel Injection will work it out. Carbs not so much back then.
Good Video , now I wish I had Conections like I did before , could figure out Factory air filter wanted that I knew would look good , and then figure out the Backing plate to work with it . Being a machinist, I learned to fabricate most of my backing plates so I got the look I wanted.
But such is life , but Great video there.
Very informative one !!
Thumbs up !
Thank you, I appreciate it! As a machinist you are only limited by your imagination! I do miss all the connections I had too when I was in a shop, it was great having access to anything and everything. Plus the employee discount was hard to beat!

Good morning man, just to let you know I realy appreciate your videos. I've learned a lot from them. Especially the one you did about the cam chain tensioner issue. Bought my first bike (05 electraglide) just before I saw that video. After seeing it I had them replaced with the hydraulic ones, Andrews cams TW26A, Fueling cam plate and a T Max tuner. Made a huge difference from stock. My next project is a big bore kit.. possibly the 98" per your video. Also installed the SUNPIE LED head light/passing lights. Had them over a year now and they are awesome for.the price. I'm now looking to replace the air filter per this video. I have the stock cover with an open element behind it (a round one). Not optimal I guess. Toward the end of this video you have what looks like the stock electraglide cover with a thick oval element behind it. I realy like that look. Any idea what brand filter that is and where I can get the same thing? Thanks man, looking forward to your next video! Stay safe out there!
Thank you, I really appreciate it! That picture at the end of the video was actually a stock cover that had been cut down. You could do that with a K&N that is the stock fitment but taller, you'd have to source longer mounting bolts and would stick out farther though. You've done some strong work to your bike, that things built right for sure now!
Arlen Ness crossover 2020 RGS SS 128 kit, CnC ported heads, 64 mm intake manifold/TB, 6.3 injectors, RS 468 cam..
Damn you did it right with that 128 kit! You've for sure got a build that needs that larger throttle body and big injectors!
thanks for the info, suggestion bring back the shelf. lol
Very welcome! Lol I do miss that shelf!
My 2014 Road King had a 103ho with the open air cleaner
The HO 103 they went with the .511 cams over the .496 a little hotter tuning and the open air cleaner. It was a really good move, improved torque quite a bit.
Great video all Harley owners should watch.
I appreciate that!
Your advice is always great! Thanks!
Your channel is my favourite one now, Mainly because you talk about the older bikes and its not all M8 this and M8 that.
I bought the Arlen Ness monster sucker from Revzilla, took 3 days to get to NZ then 5 days to get across town, Couriers suck here. I chose that A/C because the standard one pushed my leg out and i ended up getting a sore knee.
The only thing i don't like about your channel is .... I was decided on getting the Andrews 48s for my dyna but now i want to look at the woods ones lol. Thats going to be hours on the forums comparing the 2.
Wood cams are actually made by Andrews for Bob Wood, they grind the cams to Bob's specs. Andrews makes excellent cams and they actually manufacture cams for a lot of companies. Wood cams makes great power but they are noisy, that's just one thing to consider with the Wood.
@@GixxerFoo Thanks bro.
Do you mean bad noisy or good noisy?
My lifters are already pretty noticeable.
Simple way to explain the need for an a ir filter upgrade. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. If the air cleaner is too restrictive, no matter what else is done to the bike will not make any difference. Weakest link for power or strength. Not a hard concept but many still struggle with it.
That stock football air cleaner cover at 9:23, has been modified and trimmed around the back to expose that filter element. I like that, gives me some ideas of my own.....
I'm glad you noticed that! Yes that is a trimmed down stock cover, it makes a difference by exposing that element.
On my 01 road glide with a 113 I run the kuryakyn hypercharger R. Not only does it look cool it feeds it are all the way through the range is the most rain proof air intake I've ever had
Those are some really awesome air cleaners with the butterfly on the end!
@@GixxerFoo here in East Tennessee it rains everyday just about so getting caught in the rain is easy to do and having a good air cleaner that can handle the rain and breathe is great I went there about 3 before I got the right one
Thanks for another helpful video
No problem, glad to hear it was helpful!
The K&N RK-3932 that I bought for my bike had dyno chart that showed a 9.8 HP gain and 9.9 lb. ft. gain on a 96 cid TC. I’m hoping for around a 7.5 HP and 7.5 lb. ft. gain for my 88 cid TC and the foundational work for possible higher lift cams, bigger bore, higher compression, and CNC head porting in the future. I’ve already received the DynoJet PowerVision pv4 tuner to get the fuel mapping corrected. Thanks for the video, Foo, it was informative as always.
103 TC... with a FP3, V&H Big Shots, SE Heavy Breather, and a K&N filter.
That's a solid setup right there, I like those FP3's. I just with the FP3 had a PC software program like the Power Vision.
The only way to go is either of the big sucker air cleaners ! If your running an S&S carb stay with tear drop air cleaner that came with the carb the little funnel inside the cover helps make good flow .if your running a CV carb or a Mikuni those carbs like a volume of air inside the air cleaner so use a big sucker ! Gucci air cleaners work too but why waste your money ?
You've got an excellent point! That S&S air cleaner really produces some surprising power, it's a very well thought out design.
@@BeardedBavarianBiker. That's possible What I said was if you have an S & S carb your 114 is fuel injected !
I seen people now with the 107 Milwaukee eight and so forth with the stock airbox cut the bottom out put mesh screen on the bottom put a K&N in there and they got a hell of a lot more flow
For sure! I used to trim down the stock backing plates only leaving the mounting portion for the throttle body. That was always a quick way to get an open element air cleaner until I could buy one.
@@GixxerFoo I saw a few on the Facebook forums stated they did it to get more air flow and use the stock like K&N as well as a rounded one that fit into it.
Thanks for all your Twin cam stuff very helpful
No problem! I appreciate the support on the channel!
I had the SE heavy breather elite which I think huffed down more air. Problem was it was in the damn way of my leg and had some blow by when I romped on the throttle.
That heavy breather elite is a hug air cleaner, if for sure pulls the air. I am guessing you got oil spray all over your leg, have you routed your crank case breathers to a catch can?
@@GixxerFoo I tried the feuling catch can device- it was messy. I then switched to the Trask checkM8 trans cover w/ hose and catch can- no blow by at all. But then again that was after I switched air cleaners..
I’m doing a S&S 583 cam next week and picked the screaming eagle element that retains the factory teardrop cover. Am I going to be drawing enough warm air to make a difference? I will never do any future mods. Thanks for your videos, helped me a lot in choosing a cam. Actually you have the best stuff on here.
Thank you, I appreciate it! You'll be good with the air cleaner, it won't be pulling a lot of hot air while you're running down the road.
I did the stage 4 114 kit on my 2018. I switched the cam and tuner out and had it dynoed. 115/124. I’m running the SE air cleaner that I see now on the newer bikes. It seems to run great and pulls hard. Am I ok with that setup or do I need a bigger filter? I figured with the 114 I should be ok.
Stage 2 M8 114", stock air cleaner with tuner pro. I keep the air filter clean! 45 to 55 MPG and has gobs of power and smooth.
I'm surprised you're running the stock air box with a cam in there, they do work well if you get caught in the rain.
Is it the ventilator? They flow pretty well I’ve heard.
@@GixxerFoo torque cam to boot! Runs fine with stock air cleaner. Happy as hell with it!
@@GixxerFoo I just ordered a high flow screaming eagle air cleaner. You got me thinking! Dealership should have put it in when I went from stock to stage 2. ???
Video came just in time as always! Thanks bro!!
That's awesome! I like when I can get something out right when it's needed!
My 883 has just the K&N in the original filter box, but I drilled half inch holes all the way around the back half of the box to let more air in. I don't know if it helped. Probably if I go to bigger cams or upgrade to a 1275 kit. I am also considering a TC brothers little round AC. They look pretty cool and are very basic.
On my Sportster when I was saving up for a new air cleaner I actually cut the entire back plate of the air box off. I only left the mounting points for the throttle body so where it would seal. It worked great for a open element air cleaner, you couldn't even tell with the stock cover over it.
Thanks for the tips always ;
I took my auto primary tensioner out . It’s did not seem to tight . Maybe a little tighter than manual tensioner specs . I reset it and put back in . I ride a 2005 xl1200c, V&H straightshots with quiet baffles, 45 pilot and a K&N element in the stock housing. It runs ok but, a bit held back in the high end. Might changing the air filter to an S&S wake it up in a noticeably way? They have been in the market forever.
Thanks for sharing! Yeah for sure running the stock air box is holding you back, getting you a good open element air cleaner and rejetting will help out quite a bit on top.
@@GixxerFoo for what i understood from this video, any open element air cleaner will provide enough air for a motor under 90hp, aesthetics will be more costly. Ok, the next question on the bike being held back, do the quiet baffles have anything to do with this? I'm considering going back to the original baffles inspite the loudness they make. Thanks for your advise.
Binging on your videos. Man you cover all these questions I have.
I was lookimg for a low profile air cleaner bc of the lack of room on the right side with the stock air cleaner taking up most of the leg space so i found a few but they were like $350-$500 until i foung a sight "crio3d" was have a close out sale paid $30.00 from the manufacturer for the same air filter distributors were selling for 200x as much, so i bought several different ones for everyone with harleys for Christmas. Needless to say the sold out very fast also had their slipons on sell for cheap.
Air can flow through a box. You just need to update the filter. The filter is where you restrict the air flow.
That's not necessarily true. Look at the air box on an Iron 883 or Iron 1200 and tell me it'll flow as much as the filter. There's no way. The intake opening of the air box is less than four square inches while the surface area of the air filter opening is over four times that at a little over sixteen square inches. There's plenty of other air filter designs on Harley's that share a similar situation.
Sportster air box is pretty bad, you can put your hand over that and kill the motor pretty quick.
On a Harley the air box really restricts the air flow to the engine, it's not like a pressurized air box on a sport bike.
Another great video. I am leaning so much from your channel and video, thank you for putting them out.
Great to hear! I appreciate it and that's exactly why I love doing this!

Very informative video
I'm interested in the video of throttle bodies
We've messaged back and forth a bit about my build.....
So I had to redo some of the build do to a spun crank . Long story short everything is built ( 100" , woods cams , bassani 2 into 1, ported and polished heads, oversized valves etc.).so now I'm looking at a bigger throttle body and injectors ( I'm running the big sucker stage two).
I'm hoping that's enough filter for the power I'm trying to get.....
So I'm interested in your knowledge of the Tb.
Spun crank is the worst, but it's a perfect opportunity to get in there and build it back better than before! The Big Sucker is a great unrestricted open element air cleaner, that will be more than enough air. Throttle bodies are a bit tricky, if you've got enough motor they are absolutely necessary. But putting one on a engine that doesn't have the bore won't do much if anything for it.
always enjoy your videos, and learn something from your perspective. The motorcycle world has changed a lot since i started riding in the '70's. One thing sort of remains true, and that is is, the easy way out for power, is to just buy it already done, by purchasing a bigger engine / newer model. But of course, where is the fun in that, right ?
That is the easy way to do it is just go by the biggest baddest bike out there. But that takes all the fun out of working through the steps and building it up, especially yourself.

Got a TC88 converted to 107. Bigger Throttle body, injectors, TMAN headwork and 590 CAM. 120HP 124 TQ. I currently have an old school style SS Teardrop unit they developed for EFI bikes a few years ago. The tuner said they seem to flow ok but just wondering what you think of those.
Thanks

I've heard those are best flowing air cleaner out there and then heard the same thing you were told. They've been the go to for years, I like to have a completely open uncovered air cleaner myself with the cone style filter. I've had my best results that way, but it for style it really comes down to personal preference. To me a couple horse at revved out to the moon isn't a reason to compromise for something you don't like.
Another great video with valuable information. Awesome!
Thanks again! We really appreciate your support!
I have still the Harley air filter casing or box, but with a K&N actual filter.
Interesting video thanks very interesting.
Thanks for watching! The stock air box can work pretty well, some years are better than others.
Hey buddy! I’m a new subscriber and I have been a motorcycle and marine mechanic my whole adult life. I started as a tech at Harley Davidson last year and I absolutely love your videos and how good your info is so please keep it up man!
Welcome to the channel, I appreciate the support! That's pretty awesome you landed a job as a Harley tech, I gotta say I really enjoy working on Harleys myself. It's very straight forward and the motors are very simple!
@@GixxerFoo If I had given it any though when younger I would have went to school to work on harley engines, I was always mechanically inclined, plus these motors are so easy to work on, plus use a life to bring your work to you better than bedding or climbing over the hold to work on a car or truck engine, or a inboard boat motor,, plus they are fun as heck to work on, i really enjoy learning about them and have a passion for them, but im retired now so maybe in the next life if there is such a thing
I purchased a Vance and Hines air filter that I could use my factory cover with. It’s open all the way around as the cover sticks out beyond where it was stock. It comes with a K&N air filter and you can hear that thing gobbling air when you’re heavy on the throttle. Would it work for a monster build? Probably not. But it’s a great air filter for stage 1-2 in my humble opinion.
An air cleaner like that is perfect for your setup, when you get into heavy builds and the air cleaner becomes critical you'll need exposed element. But for the most part a trick air cleaner covering the element isn't a noticeable difference in power unless you're on a dyno.
@@GixxerFoo I agree. I’m probably only going to put a new set of cams in it with cam plate and oil pump. I’m not going big bore. If I want a bigger motorcycle/motor I’ll buy the whole bike. Love your information. Keep it coming. 👍
GET AN ALUMINUM INTAKE MANIFOLD Before you worry about changing an air filter. my 2023 soft tail standard came with a plastic intake. My 2023 soft tail standard came with a plastic intake manifold and both screaming Eagle and S&S are back ordered for the cast manifolds. Is their a supply issue with aluminum because it is made outside the US SO THEY ARE USING CHINESE PLASTIC to save a few cents on a part? I was lucky My dealer got one and will install this week. Yes, it is a new warrenty bike so I am letting the dealer do this and I have not ridden my new harley much until this is taken care of. great video. Thanks
😂😂just noticed you have the same 3 stooges garage sign I have in mine 👌🏻💯
That's awesome! I love that sign, I've had it for several years now.
I tested on dyno my 95 setup. Big sucker 1 give 20hp less power than without it. now i have a big k & n filter it doesn't reduce the power
That's a crazy swing just on a air cleaner setup, glad you caught that and didn't leave power on the table!
Thank you for video good stuff
Thanks for watching!
Don't gotta worry about injecters when your carburated
I put a K&N air filter element into my stock air cleaner and did an FP3 tune. Kept the stock mufflers (not into loud pipes). My Low Rider 107 runs smoother, cooler, maybe faster & has better throttle response. Very pleased with the results.
Very nice! I tuned my bike with a FP3 when it was otherwise bone stock and it made a huge difference. Just wish I hadn't of waited a year to do that though!
@@GixxerFoo Does not always have to be the nufflers first. An FP3 on it's own makes a big difference and your motorcycle appreciates it too.
Oil before use......I had an sportster in 97-2001,i was upgrade my air cleaner from this woul element and this crappy plastic housing with the small trompet intake to an sreaming eagle K&N style filter element, and it was recomant to "oil before use" so i oiled the filter element with ATF 220 on the high cams on the element....My poor sportster was running like an bottle of crap and popping black smoke dots and was not happy at all so i started wondering what have i done now...And friend was wisitting my garage when i was solder out what was wrong with the bike, and i told him what i had done ,and he asked me what colour there was on the element....It was red,Oh he says and you have been added more oil into the element....he told when he was drive dirt bike back in the days he ordered an K&N filter and this come ready to use and it was red becouse the oil who was in the element and it was grey when it was clean,so we took my filter and throw it in an bottle with gasoline to wash out some of the oil whos glugged up the element and let it dry out in the sun and get it on my bike again and now we talk, the engine was so happy that it never had been....So guys see if your new open filter are pre oiled before you do something stupid
For sure don't over oil those filters, the motor will suck that oil right in if it's saturated.
Great channel glad I found it!! Ty new sub appreciate it

Great video I am really benefiting from your content! Thanks
That is awesome to hear! Thank you for your support on the channel!
I have a 2000 fatboy carburetor engine with a few upgrades screaming eagle ign and not sure what the guy did before i bought it, can i take the breather off and try it to see if that helps.
I have a 2021 Road Glide Special. My Harley technician told me the 114 comes with a stage 1 high flow air cleaner. I was already getting a set of Vance & Hines torquer 450 slip one but he recommended the screaming Eagle heavy breather which is very similar to ones the come on the new Roadglide ST. He said I would not need a tune since I already have a high flow air cleaner. Any comments on this?
Good vid, I'm running the Cobra Power Flow on My Iron 883, with plans for a Hammer kit next season, should I upgrade the AC?
Hammer is probably going to suggest you upgrade the air cleaner depending on what conversion level you decide to go with. If you're doing a 1275 conversion and keeping the stock heads and cams that air cleaner would work.
@@GixxerFoo FYI, just the basic conversion, not looking to get too wild. BTW, just re-watched the video on breather catch cans, will be adding that to the conversion, just makes sense. as always, thanks for the info.
Hey gixxer, have you heard anything good or bad about the m8 plastic intake manifold? I have some concerns about that and I'm thinking about changing that out on my 2021 softail. Great videos and thanks from Arizona.
I haven't heard of any issues with them to date, kinda wondered how well those are going to hold up in the long run myself too.
Probably 25yrs ago , forget which magazine it was , but they took some of the most popular aftermarket air cleaners , and did an airflow test in a wind tunnel with rider on the bike. The good ol' S&S teardrop and HD 8in with modified backing plate were near the top. The Hyper-charger type was not.
S&S teardrop is incredibly underrated for carbed bikes
There's something to say for the good old classic air cleaner, one of the best out there!
@@GixxerFoo agreed man! Just don't get old bike die hards discussing cv or butterfly carbs! Comment section would be a bloodbath 🤣
I've heard that tuners will fry the ECM on Harley unless you get the Harley tuner(ScreaminEagle)
I find that hard to believe but I know little about it
Have you tried the Cobra plug and play, it comes tuned for your bike as stock, you connect it and it tunes itself to fit your equipment.......then you change anything and it auto tunes itself?.......yrs ago it was $600, but seems it would be worth it if it actually works......it would tune as your air filter gets dirty and again when you change air filter
I’m a pretty conservative guy when it comes to these power upgrades. I have a 2012 Fatboy Lo with a 103 that is completely stock except for a set of V and H slip ons. I know I’m not Normal but I actually like the look of the stock air cover and don’t want to change it and alter the look which I happen to like. My question: Can I get a K an N air filter that works with the stock cover? And will that also require a tune ? Thxs
K&N in the stock air box won't require and tuning, it might give you a bit of a gain but likely it will only give you the benefit of a reusable air filter.
I'm expecting a lot of boo's but I've just got a Scout Bobber Sixty. Big deal, I hear you say, but they stopped importing at the start of the year so it's become a collectors item. I plan on staging it up over time but I'll start with the aesthetics first
They stopped importing the Indian?? I know they can't with the Sportster Evo now but I thought the Indian would meet emissions.
@@GixxerFoo Just the Sixty line, everything else is still coming in. It doesn't meet Euro 5 emmisions but that could mean the mirrors are the wrong shape as there's very little difference between them and the regular Scout
The S&S stealth air stinger intake a good one to do?
LOVE this informative channel. Thank You, GixxerFoo ;-)
Thank you too! We really appreciate your support over here!
Gixxer, as always just another excellent video to add to your repitiore of outstanding and directly to the point vids. I never was one for the "Fancy" air cleaners or pipes for that matter, just something that enhances performance and doesn't break the bank! Although I don't use one, I think the Arlen Ness Big Sucker line is a great bang-for-the-buck option. Keep up the GREAT work 👍
Thank you! The Arlen Ness is one of the best bang for the buck out there! Air cleaners are just so overpriced for what they are.
Nothing like HPI V2 62mm 498 cfm.
This is going on my 131 crate engine
The HPi V02 55mm with heavy breather is on my M8 107. Also these AC have Velocity stack inside of it.
HPI makes some monster throttle bodies! They work very well, they have a much better design than the Screamin Eagle.
I’m looking to go stage IV on an M8 low rider S and never thought picking an air cleaner would be such a pain. I’d prefer one that didn’t get in the way of my knee, doesn’t need a sock in the rain, and allows the engine to breath.
When you get into the big inch engines the air cleaner really becomes a factor. It really is hard to find an air cleaner you like and will still fit with the larger throttle bodies the stage IV fits have.
@@GixxerFoo what the best air cleaner for big TB
What’s funny is size 143 S&S bike in Daytona and I asked him is that enough for that bike the engine and I said yeah man this air cleaner was dinky it was really small probably 4 inches if that are from side to side maybe 5 I mean it was small but they said it was enough to feed that 143 air.
It really comes down to available surface area, if you were to cover it it might start to restrict flow. Not enough to notice or feel but you'd for sure see it on the dyno.
Hi. How will open filters work in rain? Will water get inside an intake manifold?
Yes. it does not work very hard in the rain. the engine may shut down and run only on surface gas
They come with rain socks which repel water, they work pretty. I have rode through thunderstorms and down pours using them and didn't have any issues.
Every now and again you can have an issue with that, lol I got creative and swung my leg over the air cleaner to keep running lol.
Air cleaners are pretty straight forward, what makes the difference is the throttle body.
The throttle bodies make a big difference on the larger motors, the bigger you get the more you will find you benefit. SE has that 58mm for the Sportster, you can put it on a 1200 with exhaust air cleaner and tune but it doesn't change anything.
@@GixxerFoo problem is the sportster not the throttle body. We’re grown men here we don’t need to pretend we care about sportsters lol
Is there any performance gains from the 90° intakes? Or are they just for looks?
Thank you for this video. I have a 2005 sportster 1200 with slip ons. Do I need a tune if I put a Screaming eagle cleaner on?
You'll need to make some jetting changes as changing the air cleaner will lean you out with more air.
More great advice from gixxerfoo👍. Does more air lean out the motor?
It does, that's why it's very important if you're just putting on slipon exhaust and not tuning to leave the air filter stock. But with a tune, even a canned map it's accounted for a high flow air filter.
What tuner should I get for my 2006 dyna superglide , I just bought a Arlen ness 65 air cleaner
Do you have to remap a 20road glide limited with a screaming eagle cone air filter and rine heart slip ons some HD parts guys say yes some say no??
is it worth to upgrade to a SS55 intake manifold aluminum/ vs harley stock plastic manifold throttle body ??? (2021 RGS 114 )
I have a 12 street glide that i had a shop make into a 124 and i sent my stock TB to HPI and got back either a 58mm or 62mm TB, i had put a round Screamin Eagle air breather on it when it had the stock TB and since i got the bike back a couple years ago i found out the shop is kinda sketchy plus ive had a oil leak under my jugs and they tried twice to fix it and now wont return my calls, so after watching your video im wondering if they even used the TB i got back from HPI cause they put the same air breather back on it but according to this video it shouldn't have fit or maybe it should have. Can you let me know either way?
