The biggest problem right now in Canada is everybody parks savings in real estate, 40% of Canadian GDP that a huge number. How can productivity increase in a country where 40% of your money goes to assets that don't generate any jobs. You don't need fancy economics to understand this country is doomed.
A country builds its wealth by trading with other countries. Building houses, buying/selling real estate to each other has very little impact on growing our economy. When eventually the economy is not growing and less jobs and opportunities are available in Canada ( we cannot all work for the government), the house that Canadian own won't worth much. Most people do not think about it.
The policy framework in Ontario entirely is skewed to real estate investment and in favor of landlordism i.e., builders will never release enough lots that would undercut their pricces/ profits , this results in scarcity pushing up rents.
@@ohcanadaeh exactly there was some hope if construction sector was hot, but in here everyone wants to trade in homes and nobody wants to make / produce more homes. This is Capitalism at its worst. Someone's got to do the dirty work.
I agree, two things happening here. Wealthy people with money to invest put it into real estate because there is not much business opportunity. Almost all industry in Canada have some type of protecting body that maintains the status quo of whatever company was there before. See telecommunications industry, see the dairy industry (you have to purchase and follow a quota, most other countries don't do this).
People who aren't wealthy are struggling have been using up all of their income just for basic things and a few little comforts here and there (say, yearly trips to Caribbean) which are also slowly fading away with the cost of living. Jobs were generated because the recently landed immigrant had disposable income to open a little shop somewhere. Now not only don't they have 0 disposable income to open something of their own but also the cost of commercial space + all industries having some type of protection makes it worse to get in. So all that is left is just investing in real estate by purchasing the place you live in and maybe one extra for renting. There is very little, to no culture of lending or giving money to a family member to start a business. Man, it's easier for a clueless 18 year old to go to the bank and get 50k for a degree that won't get them anything than a 30 year old with a business plan. That says everything you need to know about why things are so wrong with Canada, and. I'd say North America in general.
Even if the housing sector were 'hot', the economy of a country cannot be based on an inert asset class. Acquiring land and making houses on it doesn't make an economy. And the fact that people's savings are 'parked' in real estate because they have no choice if they want to be able to afford a home. To help alleviate this, the cost of homes has to come down - we need to stem the primary factor feeding into that, which is currently record-breaking immigration. Then we need to build like never before for the next decade.

Canadian prefer to carry a mortgage than going into the equity market to invest in private business/companies in Canada. They want the other guys to take the risks and invest so the home owners can all have jobs to pay their mortgage and eventually make a killing on their houses. How naive are they ????

I have 2 acquaintances that moved to Texas for IT jobs. Cheaper housing, no state tax and better weather.
I have 3 other friends that have moved to Florida years ago and would never move back to Canada.
And finally, an acquaintance that's a surgeon who moved to NYC.
@@Viewpoint11 There's a tax treaty between the US and Canada. You get tax credits from the IRS for the CRA taxes paid. Effectively you're paying the higher of the two country's taxes, not paying taxes twice.
Move to Alberta. Good jobs, cheaper gas and goods, no PST.

@@JJs_playground I think I see the pattern. Texas, Florida. You're looking for a warm place i.e. not Canada. Word of advice. I lived in NYC in winter, can get pretty brutal too. Stick to Florida and Texas or Cali for if weather is the primary indicator. Another warning though, all they do in Florida is also buy and sell real estate, they've been doing it for decades.
When do you expect when you have an incompetent and corrupt government? The hope for young people in Canada is to get out of here asap. The living standard for a lot of young people and low income earners in Canada is even worse than some developing countries.
Were the policy makers sleeping the last decade?! Look at the amount of unskilled labour in the country the past decade? On top of that, Canada stopped making things and their is too much government in everything. Canada will most likely lose 10th position in the list of countries for highest GDP’s.
It looks mores like policy makers have been sleeping for at least 20 years if not more. Lack of housing, unskilled labour, manufacturing completely gone, serious issues with health care, mental health care, poverty, unaffordability in almost every aspect of life. Things don't get this bad in one decade! Policy makers have been dreaming a lot in a very long, self induced sleep that has lasted a few decades at least.
We're 22 if you compare GDP per capita.

Have you not checked the forecasts? Canada will barely be in top 30 economies by 2050. Indonesia, Brazil, Vietnam, India are all on track to be the biggest economies by 2050. India is on track to overtake US by 2050 and western countries are on track to lose their spots and go further down the list.
A beautiful country, but even Canadians prefer to be tourists here. Many are in the process of becoming tourists and visit once an year or maybe never. The point is that the damage has been done and no one, if given an option will want to waste years here in the wait to see how Canada was a decade ago.
Canadians would be proud of Canadian businesses if they weren't buried in housing costs. The lack of the policy makers addressing housing security is the root cause of this. The speaker mentions the Canadian pride during the Chretien administration, when Canadian cost of living was an eighth of what it is now, fix housing insecurity and you'll see how proud we all are of this great nation. Our policy makers have been failing us. There's no incentives for manufacturing, research and development to come here. The combination of the Trump and Biden administration are getting something done down south with MAGA and the inflation reduction act with massive investment moving back into the USA, what are we doing? Mexico is growing at an immense rate too, with massive investment in manufacturing infrastructure, a newly completed (almost) 1500km rail network. We need to do better!

As a 40 something creative person who's worked in the corporate/tech sector and retired, I cringe at the thought of being involved in the business world again. yet I have many ideas and creations that would benefit canada. As a proud Canadian I would happily gift ideas if I thought the country would be better off. Why not have a program that would allow people to patent for free and then license ideas to the government in exchange for recognition as the inventor or creator and a resonable compensation on the back end.
Like a patriotic open source model for adding to the gdp.

It's old news for many of us. I'm glad they're catching up with the news, however.
Absent from this conversation was the important component of record-breaking immigration. In and of itself putting downward pressure on GDP per capita, but also a powerful disincentive for companies to innovate. This seems to be a key driver of the much-overblown cries of labor shortage that we keep hearing is the reason for this historic influx of people.
Also absent from the conversation is the fact that this very dynamic is making property owners (especially older, long-time property owners) fantastically wealthy. The point was given a glancing blow when describing the gap in satisfaction between the younger and older generations, but it wasn't driven home. The fact is that we've created dangerously conflicting incentives within our society, and our government seems intent on feeding that fire as fast as it can be arranged.

The fact that’s it’s been 40 years and everything is the same no growth no nothing.
I run an innovation company that produces about 0.25% of all "Canadian" patents. Raitt is right about the low volume of R&D in Canada at 0.6% of GDP. Most advanced economies are between 2% and 3%. Canada does relatively more basic research and less applied research so the patent numbers are even worse than GDP alone indicates. In the Harper era when Raitt served Canada produced 82 patents per million population and was slowly closing the gap with the US at 271 patents per million population. Within 6 months of Trudeau taking office, Canadian resident patents fell to 63 per million population and have remained in the cellar ever since. The reason is brain drain. In 2016 alone 22000 scientists and engineers left Canada (mainly to the US) for better pay, lower taxes, and cheaper housing. All were replaced (the total number of R&D personnel stayed at 240K) but the replacements are obviously not as good as the people who left (hiring for factors other than merit). The idea that just persuading a few big companies to invest in Canada is naive. Canadian innovation is low because the government is doing most things wrong. There is no quick fix even if a new government took power and corrected all of the current government's mistakes on day one (0% chance of happening) because the average gap between idea and first commercial product is 13 years. The innovation pipeline is nearly empty from 2016 onward, so medium term patent numbers are likely to trend downward even if better policy starts filling the early stage part of the pipeline.

not much talk about the massive influx of new residents since 2021. GDP per capita is: GDP divided by population. New residents may not be as productive since they are settling in (argueably). The denominator increased way faster than it can affect the numerator.
You need diving newcomers as skilled workers and refugees.

In Norway everyone is at the same level. Meaning you can’t be rich and be tax as hell.
defn: GDP per capita is GDP divided by number of people. So if GDP growth is limited by BoC interest rate and the population growth is increased substantially in the low wage, low production value sector, isn't that another contribution to low GDP per capita? Is this a distortion or a valid issue or addressed in the report?

Thank you McLellan for bringing up a very important aspect to it all, that being the ongoing education aspect. If all the jobs are requiring skill sets and degrees that otherwise would have been trained for at those jobs in the past, then it falls to the worker to go get trained otherwise via the colleges and universities. That's all well and good when they do hire the people who go that route, but they don't always hire those people either. In some cases they start to expect higher degrees of skill than prior. Once again, all fine and good if they are willing to train up the people who at least showed the initiative to get pre-training somehow. But the goalpost just keeps moving upwards, and that's not sustainable.
They've found the point essentially where skill set isn't keeping up to demand, because they aren't willing to invest into the ongoing training of the needs of that demand.
I've had a job where the employer was willing to pay for ongoing education, provided of course it would be beneficial for work. Makes sense. I can now go and further my education working with power systems if I want to because of it. Maybe I should? But then again, what point is there in it if I am not at least guaranteed to be able to land a job. Not a job given specifically; just guarantee the money spent and time used to learn the skills isn't going to waste by not having a chance at any job. Because that's the situation we are in right now.
We're skilled out on both ends. We have many very talented people, but also many who are fine with a simpler life, or just haven't gotten training somehow, etc and so forth. The people who were filling those positions before are retiring, and now these employers who had their way with demanding higher skills before are now finding they have to either start over with training people up somehow, or hiring out of country, etc; to fill those positions.
And just to really drive the point home how out of whack it's gotten on the 'requirements' for some jobs...
There are employers who have locations that can be easily walked to, transited to, biked to, all of these things; but they require you have a drivers license. Why?
They simply want you to be at their beck and call, because with a vehicle you can technically get there faster. Even if you live a block away, they will still say no, but at this point it's because "Well, we say no to everyone else without one, so it would be unfair to say yes to you."
Yes, I've gotten that exact line before.
They are their own problem, and we are the ones who are feeling the worst of it, while they complain they are hardest done by.
What makes it worse, is that a lot of this training is actually a tax write off for them, or will have some sort of rebate attached, etc. Depends on the situation, province, etc once again. But they do, all, have options.
Heck, I've been denied a job while on EI, because the employer looking for a part time worker didn't know you can work on E.I. if at a part time job. Never occurred to him to maybe keep up to date on something like E.I. as an employer. So I wouldn't be surprised if others just have no clue these options exist for them to make use of. I ended up finding two part time jobs eventually after that, one first, while on EI, and then the second once my probationary period was passed on the first job; thus securing to some extent some level of employment. All completely legal, if done right, which I did.
But again, some employers didn't know about that. So I wonder how much more they don't know about. And with the way so many seem to just flagrantly break labour laws here... I suspect there are many things they need an education on. Perhaps that would help increase our productivity... and thus GDP...
Blame CERB for housing .. how many countless people took that living many people in one house that didnt have any savings and suddenly they all have down payment money available.

100 percent, many americans and even immigrants to America would rather spend 100k for example on starting a company than buying a property. In Canada people have been trained to think buying a home is the only investment in life. its why young generations feel like Canada is done, when in reality they should vote in a goverment that wants to decrease regulation and than they should start busineeses

Most of my friends from high school and university work in the US, and I'm a loser still stuck in Canada. Started applying for US jobs recently. My wealth accumulation has taken a major hit for the few years I've worked in Canada compared to my US peers. It's not easy for a data analyst to find a job in the US right now, but I'm getting some encouraging signs. THERE IS NO FIXING CANADA. Asking Poilievre to fix 8 years of Trudeau and chronic problems (such as lack of investment) that were always pushed to the backburner even before Trudeau, is an extremely tall order. We need a Vivek Ramaswamy, or a Javier Milei type of leader. That man could be partially found in Maxime Bernier, but Canadians are not ready for such a radical, extremist man. Unfortunately, that is EXACTLY the shot in the arm that Canada needs right now.
So true, man. Things are SUPER hard for the Argentine. EXTREMELY hard. People complain of inflation here they have no clue what it is to truly suffer from inflation. But they are so fed up, and they have built a resistance to misery so they can fight this off until things get more stable for them, they're willing to sacrifice. Even with this much hardship Milei's approval rates are higher than when he was elected.

It is ridiculous that Canada has HIGHER taxes than the United States. It DOES NOT work that way. As a country with a less dynamic economy and a smaller population, we NEED to increase global tax competitiveness to encourage more international investment and retain Canadian talent. Take a look at Singapore, Hong Kong, they are smaller economies that leveraged a competitive tax system to fuel economic growth. Being beside the United States is our biggest advantage; we need to become the Singapore of North America, but with the current direction we’re headed we’ll end up more of an Argentina.

ATCO electric lays people off in Alberta. 15 to 25 year employees are laid off to reduce expenses to appeal to shareholders. Many employees were shareholders. How can people be productive when they are at home collecting EI ?

BS, these companies want tax payer to cover expenses, they saw VW get 12 billion for a battery factory and won't invest unless they get some welfare checks themselves.
I have been investing in TSX junior mining companies for years. Many small mining companies exploring in BC have been in an endless permitting cycle. Every year the ministry has a meeting and asks for more information. This means year after year a small company operating on raised money by retail shareholders can not generate any revenue for another year. How long can a company be expected to stay running with no revenue. In Canada government kills investment.
Liberals and NDP governments are anti mining. That is absolutely clear. Resource rich Canada is supressed by these debt ridden governments and they are bringing use all down to a 3rd world status.
Lower the tax so that private sector can do the job! It’s illusion that the gov needs more money to invest in well fare and security. How many hours you have to wait to see a doctor when you go to ER? What the police do all day is to give people tickets (tax). They can’t even prevent the simple car theft criminals.
What the gov is really doing? Canada is uninvestable from international standpoint.

Driving factor of productivity is motivation . Look at the gap in pay scale whilst drawing comparisons with US. Canada still pay antiquated salaries to its workers. Guess that is evident why productivity is low. You don’t need to be scientist or politician to understand the Simple reason
Not surprising when the economy is heavily tied to a real estate bubble and skilled workers are leaving for better jobs/living conditions in other countries.
The government is shortsighted for long already, to set an example. They look at practicality and funded applicable sciences way more and left fundamental sciences underfunded for over a decade.
This is such an important conversation. Good for Ann & Lisa for bringing this to our attention. Canadians are depressed and worried. Housing is in a Justin Trudeau induced crisis with no hope of a return to affordability in the next decade.

If its not green its not clean. Unbelievable amount of regulatory policy, often connected with climate change, that’s discouraging every aspect of the economy & scaring away investors.
There are so many intelligent opinions and suggestions in the comments section. If the government would just take the time to “ listen” instead of laying down (read imposing) one tax after the other and encouraging further speculation and driving up real estate prices without building more houses!!
2:22 sounds like people are tired. Seems like there was rapid economic growth which can overwhelm the workers and possibly hinder productivity despite high indications of economic growth.
Inflation is not completely out of control of the government. If we were more productive as a nation with less red tape to allow business flourish and invest here that could help alot. Produce more than you bring in and have lower unemployment rates. As well another big part is the more money you print and spend as a government you create inflation. The government can do alot to make stanard of living better. This governemnt has done record spending and increased debt that is entirely unnecessary. Taxes will have to go up to pay this sky rocketing debt we can't sustain forever.
And by hiring more government employees waybeyond what private sector is, is not a good guage of increased employment levels and increased GDP.

Crop prices are record low....
That's not true. Check historical charts for grain, corn, meat, soybeans, etc. They're all elevated and even the lowest ones are still above levels seen before 2020. Most food prices have increased by 50% over their averages from four years ago and remain at these levels. Yes, many of them are at lows for the year, but that's still 50% above what they used to be.

At least the mainstream is beginning to put more emphasis on GDP per capita. We need bold leadership to declare that neoliberalism is a failed project and I think we're a long way from that.
When you have such an expensive economy, where rents (house and car payments, cost of food) are becoming sky high for the average labourer/wage earner, why would industrial Capital ever invest here as opposed to China or South East Asia? Sure we could cut labours wages in order to promote investment, but then labour would barely survive. The solution is to legislate away and regulate financial capital, so that the economy becomes a low cost economy where labour can make a living at a low cost, encouraging industrial investment that produces real things, as opposed to financial instruments and housing bubbles.
What's the motivation for launching a small venture when real estate seems like the only sure path to wealth? The alternative is a government job with a secured pension, but Canada's tax system feels like we're taxed on taxes, not encouraging entrepreneurship. Elon Musk, a former Canadian citizen, left for the US where opportunities and talent thrive for greater success.

I would love to know what the real job numbers are. I don't think someone working through a temp agency or for the government should be included in the job numbers. The fact that most new jobs are created by the government tells me that the GDP numbers are much worse. Also, I won't be surprised when the numbers are updated and we discover they were much lower

This isn't newsworthy. If our Prime Minister knowingly made more of a debt than any other PM since the beginning of Canada combined in 2021 and 2022, and hands out billions to random countries instead of paying your debts, how can you possibly be surprised that if we don't have a bigger GDP we couldn't have borrowed any of that money and handed it out. The fed knew what it was doing, there is no surprise. If you don't pay people more, our GDP is low. If you farm people just for wanting a home, they'll leave. If your countries shares are owned at 48% by retail, we're going downhill. Your victims are not to fault for your choice to impoverish 8 generation of Canadians for a fistful of dollars.

If he had a ounce of integrity he’d just go away for the sake of the country. Especially with his polling numbers and they aren’t going to get any better. It’s time for him to go.

I'm not saying it's an excuse but these days everything is under 20 microscopes and built with their own twisted agenda.
