It wasn’t suicide. I believe it was accidental drowning. There’s a cover of this song by Bad Wolves that she was supposed to record with them but the day they were set to record it was the day she was found dead in her hotel room. Bad Wolves went on to record the song and they donated all profits to her children.

Not everyone looks into the story of the song, I appreciate that. And there are some powerful songs about the violence of what was essentially a centuries long war that only just came to an end in the 1990’s…I’ve always love this one, glad you checked it out!

I agree, amazing song that targets meaningless violence. But who do you feel like the lyrics are truly targeting? Who is mistaken? Is she referring to England/US/NATO? Because if so, I disagree. We are not the zombies. We own a responsibility being the strongest nations in the world to keep others in check. If we didn't, the violence would be far beyond imagination. It sucks, but sometimes we have to stop violence with violence in order to keep peace.

We haven't even got free speech in ireland anymore thanks to the unelected government we allow to still hold power. The story of the bomb on the shopping street is correct. The street is called Bridge Street in an English town called Warrington. The north end was a pedestrianised and the south back in those days was open to public traffic, busses, taxis... and escape.
The first bomb was planted in a bin (trash can) outside a chemists called Boots on the pedestrianised top end of the street. Boots was popular with children for buying gifts for their mums. Perfume, cheap dress jewellery, skin creams and body care sets etc. It went off at lunchtime on Saturday 20th March, 1993. The time and day was significant, as it was the day before Mother's Day and Boots was packed with kids all morning, going in and out of the doors right in front of the bin that had the first bomb. McDonald's was right across the way too, again packed with kids grabbing some lunch.
After it went off, everyone south of the explodion ran down Bridge Street to get to the open road section and get out of the town center, looking to jump on bisses, get into taxis, flag down private cars, or even just run down to the bottom of the street, over the river crossongs and out of the town.
I was at the head of Bridge Street and with it being behind me, i didnt see the first bomb go off. I did see the panicked, fleeing crowds of kids and weekend shoppers run right into the path of the second one though, planted in another bin just where the pedestrian street became a road for traffic and set to go off a little after the first one, just long enough after to deliberately catch those trying to escape in its blast. It was planted outside Argos, a catalogue shop that was also really popular for all kinds of cheap gift ideas and again, full of kids looking for things to get for their mums.
The two boys were called Tim Parry, aged 12 and Jonathan Ball, aged 3. I didnt see Jonathan in the surreal, slow motion chaos afterwards, but I did see a few people frantically and ultimately, fruitlessly working on Tim. He'd gone to a different school and I didn't know him, but being only 13 myself at the time, seeing someone your own age lying on the bloodsoaked ground after being caught in a bombing attack, well any childhood innocence you still have at that age disappears pretty bloody quickly. You moved on with the rest of the town afterwards and still did the same things kids that age do, but nothing ever seemed as care free again after that day.

I’m Irish….I am so sorry for the death of those two boys. Please believe me. While the Irish wanted their freedom, they and I mean, I , did not want it a at the expense of two innocents
. Southern Ireland was devastated. Mothers , Fathers all just shocked , and this atrocity just devastated the Irish people
. No one is more dear to parents as their children. My condolences to what you have suffered. The Cranberries tried to convey our horror to that in this music…..she was a Mother and understood the threat to her children was a threat to her.

The Troubles is a term used to describe a period of conflict in Northern Ireland that lasted about 30 years, from the late 1960s until the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 and she was singing about all the unnecessary deaths as a result of this conflict including a 3 year old who was blown up in a busy shopping area and then a 12 year old a week later there were many more though beaten and killed.
The main participants in the Troubles were republican paramilitaries such as the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) and the Irish National Liberation Army (INLA); loyalist paramilitaries such as the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) and Ulster Defense Association (UDA); British state security forces such as the British

Her voice, that keening… it actually reaches out caressing you before reaching in and snatching your heart and squeezing it, twisting it, forcing every nerve in your body to come alive…. It is so beautiful and distinctive… and when she lets her voice open completely…. It is chilling in a beautiful way. I played this CD to death and had to replace it twice.

I took a trip to Dublin a few years ago during Easter week. I wasn’t previously aware this is the anniversary of the Easter Rebellion where, in 1916, Irish nationalists revolted against British rule in Ireland. I wandered into a pub that happened to have live music one evening. They started playing this song, and I’ve never seen such loud, passionate patrons in a bar as they all sang along to this song. Made me want to delve deeper into understanding Ireland’s history.
I loved Ireland. Wonderful people. Favorite country I’ve been to so far.

and when you do, realize that Dolores (cranberries vocalist) was scheduled to do vocals on it with Tommy.... but died before that could happen.

I disagree with some of the commenters here. A song has to stand on its own in every generation, apart from its original context, even forgotten as to its meaning. Rick is reacting, not doing a PhD in history. When I think of Delores, I think of Roy Orbison’s voice when Dwight Yoakum said: “he sounds like an angel falling backwards out a window.” That’s exactly how she sounds, and the only singer other than Roy with that pure tone falling in space.
