Indeed. This is a terrible product, not only "terrible price". There is no way around it - some people will claim "duh it's a 3070 with a 100 USD discount" but that's not true with the anemic memory bus, and even if it was, it's still a terrible place to be in considering that 3060Ti and 3070 are so close that they can be to even call them distinct products from the same generation! In other words, "3070-like performance for 100 USD discount" is not an argument when a 3060Ti exists! This turd cannot be saved by a 16 GB buffer, and not even if it came at the same 400 US Dollars.

I've said it over and over: in 2015, we got an R9 390 with 8GB for $330. The fact we're still getting this much VRAM on more expensive cards 8 years later is a complete joke. The Nvidia simps can make all the excuses about faster memory modules and more cache all they want, but the simple fact is that games require much more VRAM than they did 8 years ago, and games are now developed for the 9th gen consoles with 16GB unified memory (say ~13GB dedicated VRAM). That said, your concerns regarding 8gb cards also has me thinking about my cards long term viability. My last card was a Strix 1080 (8gb) (bought second hand for AU$600), which in turn replaced a GTX780Ti (3gb) card that I bought new for AU$800 including postage. That replaced my last AMD card, the mighty HD6990 (also bought new for AU$800), a double gpu card with 2gb vram per gpu.
The high prices now demanded for the 80 skew are obscene, making even that brutally expensive 3080 look like a bargain.

I would like to see this card compared with it’s technical predecessor, the 3050, as well as it’s pricing predecessor, the 3060 TI which had 45% of the max Ampere chip.
Edit: To clarify, I don’t think a full video just comparing the 3050 and 4060 TI is needed. I’m just saying in the future for the initial review, including that kind of comparison truly exposes this kind of cash grab…. Because that’s what this is.

What a lot of people don’t get here is that the 80 series and 70 series cards have traditionally been the same GPU, just a cut down version in the 70 series. With Nvidias 4000 series, they decided that the 4080 is its own GPU (AD103 die), and the 4070 Ti (AD104 die) is a separate one. The 104 dies usually went to the 60 models while the 106 dies (which is in the 4060 Ti) usually went to the entry level GPUs (like the 3050). So after the RTX 4080, all the cards below it were moved down a performance tier (because they had a lower tier chip) but kept the same name and pricing so Nvidia can maximize margins. This is all evident in Steves data.
The fact that Nvidia decided to make a 16GB version last minute (as evidenced by the graphics on the video cards boxes), and charged a ridiculous $500 for it, just goes to show how they’re trying to extract as much money as possible from their customers.
Hopefully AMD is smart enough to capitalize on this, release comparable models at much lower prices.
I know I’m not buying Nvidia anytime soon for the scummy ways.

      @LeGoooze Год назад +9

@rngQ Is the other way around, their Ada Lovelace architecture is great, as evident with the 4090. Hell, they could have extracted much more performance from their AD101 but decided not to since they knew AMD could not compete with them in performance with their 7900 XTX. Because of that they decided to move the segmentation down, so a 80 class of today would behave as s 70 class from a generation or two ago and so on and so forth. This is basically a 4050 ti, a typically $150-$200 GPU being sold for twice as much, which is pretty much in line with the rest of the 4000 series. Nvidia does this because they are pretty confident no other company can challenge them and so far they are right, at least on the newest gen cards. The RDNA2 is their most direct competition right now, but those cards are a couple of years old at this point and don't have the bells and whistles of the newest gen (DLSS3, AV1). Tbh if you have a Pascal era card (GTX 1060-80) or a Polaris era card (RX 560-90) then maybe you should look for a RDNA2 card. If you can, you should better wait and see the RDNA3 options from AMD or wait till 2024 for Intel and their Battlemage line of cards. Maybe the 5000 series will not be as bad as this gen, but I can't be sure, Nvidia is so full of themselves that they might as well sell the same GPUs for their 5000 but with DLSS 4 and other stupid gimmicks that doesn't make sense unless you have a 90 class card three generations later...

Hopefully AMD will take a decent bite out of the lower half of the market. Maybe even Intel if these cards are not refreshed any time soon.

16:25 Yup, I’m one of those few people who got a 3060 Ti at MSRP at launch. Frankly given how good AMD offerings have been over the years, it was still an okay enough product for the price. The VRAM only really became an issue two years into using it for me at 1080p, at least.
After watching benchmarks like these, there’s no way I’m upgrading to a 4060 Ti - even the 16GB version. The way things are looking in the current GPU market I might as well wait for the GeForce RTX 6000 series/Radeon RX 9000 series/whatever the third Intel Arc generation is called, and stick to potentially lower texture/resolution and no RT.
Will there ever be another truly must-have performance tier card at sub $400? I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if AMD or Intel products reach something like 4090 tier performance at that price or less before NVIDIA does (if NVIDIA even offers $400 cards in the future).

Something everyone seem to have forgotten is that Nvidia wanted to call the 4070ta a 4080 and charge more $ for it. They where forced to call it the 4070ti and still charged too much for it. This means they wanted everything below it to be bumped up a naming tier and to charge more. For example Nividia had originally planed on calling this 4060ti the 4070 with a price of at least, but probably more than, $600 for a 8GB card, this was Nvidias original plan, to charge you more for similar or worse performance than last gen.
And they are still charging more for similar performance in laptops compared to last gen.

Great review. Completely agree! We've stagnated on 8GB for way too long. Developers were bound to move on at some point. I mean the PS5 and Xbox have more vram than a 600$ 3070 Ti. 8GB shouldn't even be entry level anymore. We've had them for a decade. R9 390 came out in 2015... I thought we would have been well past the graphics we have today years ago. Just like Intel quad cores for a decade........ Complete stagnation...

Rx 480 8gb and Gtx 1070 8gb came out almost 7 years ago with the same sized memory.
It is embarrassing how Nvidia is limiting memory size as a method of planned obsolescence, while attempting to hold back the gaming industry at the same time.
Also the memory bus situation is terrible, the 1070 gets 256 GB/s while the 4060 Ti gets 288 GB/s. A whopping 13% increase after 7 years.

I don't agree with your point regarding 8GB VRAM. 8GB VRAM is more than enough for games which are properly optimised. PS3 had 256MB VRAM and Xbox 360 had 512MB of VRAM and lasted for 8 years.
GPU companies are trying to fool people to make them spend more money. If the PS5 had only 8GB of VRAM game companies would still be able to optimise the game well. Series S has 8GB which the console will probably go on for 5 more years.

If your idea of optimization is less detail then just play with lowest textures. If I'm going to play with low textures I could get by with a $40 GTX 1030.
