I had the same surprise when I was running 18.04 LTS and 20.04 was released: no upgrade was offered on my PC. At that time it turned out to be the same reason: Ubuntu postpones this upgrade until the first point release (20.04.1 at that time) was released. This time Ubuntu announced that they will do the same thing: upgrading from 20.04 will only be offered once the point release 22.04.1 has been released. Having learned my lesson two years ago I will patiently wait until the upgrade is offered.

New LTS version will not be discovered by software update UI until 22.04.1 release. For upgrading from 20.04 to 22.04 before the 22.04.1 release (which will be in Aug), the upgrade to development version command will work.
    $ sudo do-release-upgrade -d

Always wait until at least the first point release. Even then I try and wait longer. I want to make sure most of the bugs have been worked out.

I have two HDDs with Ubuntu. I wait for my important HDD install to upgrade. But I am going to upgrade early on my 'scratch' or other HDD install to test it out. I've tested out the earlier point releases already and I don't like the new horizontal workspaces and icon selections.

Just watched the to see when Don would realize that upgrade is not available at the moment. I was in the same boat a few days back.

You could etc the sources.list file and change it to jammy that way then you can upgrade using apt update/upgrade

I have upgraded from Ubuntu 20.04 to 22.04. It worked pretty well, but when I log in (with wayland or xorg) my background picture is not taking the full screen and on the top I have a search bar. I need to click on the reduced background pic so the background pic takes the whole screen. it wasn't like that on ubuntu 20.04. what do I have to disable so I don't have that reduced background with that search bar at the top when I have logged in?

my upgrade from 20.04 to jammy broke my system and gave me a big beautify kernel panic screen. Hours later, I got it fixed. Also my radeon drivers had to be reinstalled. I thought it was a bit risky to go from 20.04 to 22.04.1

I just upgraded. It was initially very messy - my self hosted website got messed up. Finally after 10 hours of work my computer works fine.

I had installed it, they were at least 2 big problems. 1-Screenshot didn't work (crashes) 2-Power Mode is mixed up. They were 2 options: Power Saver and Balanced. Balanced seemed ok, but Power Saver did the opposite of what it is supposed to do. It used constantly extra CPU and the fan was tuning like crazy.
    I don't recommend 22.04 over 20.04

I have a question. The new built in screen capture/recorder stops in 2 seconds on the latest Ubuntu 22.04 Jammy Jellyfish. Is yours do the same and if so, can you please let us know how to fix it? Thank you.

Would it be possible to upgrade Ubuntu Studio from 20.04 to 22.04? (Ubuntu Studio 20.04 desktop is Xfce, while Ubuntu Studio 22.04 desktop is KDE)

I understand the desire to do an in-place upgrade but you are better off doing a fresh install when going from LTS to LTS. It only has to be done every 2 years.

What I like about Ubuntu is this is the one distro I've used that actually upgrades without sh-tting the bed
I have one system that I've upgraded from 18.04, to 20.04 and now successfully to 22.04
Good luck getting that sort of reliable upgrade from an RPM based distro

I disagree. Updates are meant to work. I have upgraded through the years several systems. My ubuntu is fine going from 18.04

Looks like Wayland is not supported in Ubuntu when you have nVIDIA graphics.

It's not the default but you should be able to switch to Wayland at the login screen assuming gdm is up to date.

Hi Don. I really enjoy your RUclips videos. I've tried a few other videos on how to upgrade to Ubuntu 22.04, but the presenter was too gross to watch. I understand your issues and fighting to upgrade Ubuntu 20.04. I seem to have the same issues trying to get anything done in Linux. It's always a fight, and nothing ever goes as advertised. Right now, I can't even complete a proper backup of my /home directory.

I've landed on Ubuntu after having nothing but problems with other major distros when it comes to upgrading
Also it's the only distro that installs onto LVM "out of the box" without putting up a fight
