The Ted Williams intro and then to follow that up by Pedro striking out the side in front of his home crowd - Amazing. One of the best moments baseball has ever seen.
I was 12 y/o when I watched this with my dad. When Ted Williams came out, it was the first time I really saw the old man cry. Our love of baseball was so strong back then. Getting out of LL and moving into middle school baseball. I miss this time sometimes. Baseball was everything and this moment is so special
I was 13 years old when i went to this game. So many memories from this game: Pedro dominating, Ted Williams, all century team, all the greats I got to see in one sitting (Pedro, Griffey, Randy Johnson, Manny, McGwire, Sosa, Hoffman, Jeter etc). This night will always stay with me
I love every second of the all century team introduction. Seeing the smiles on those boys faces as they get cheered on for what might be some of their last time. Only thing that hurts me is Mickey and Joe D passed before the all century team was created.
@40.01 RIP Tony Gwynn (Mr. Padre) seen here greeting Ted Williams (splendid splinter). Tony died last night (June 16, 2014) and will be remembered along with Williams as 2 of the greatest hitters of all time.@41.02 you can see Tony and Ted share a few words which I can guarantee must of been about hitting a baseball just like they are right now. God bless.
I’m born and raised in the Bean and have seen hundreds of Sox games at Fenway as a Yankee Fan from birth(Long Story) so I already knew the Class that the Red Sox and Sox Fans are. This was absolutely breathtaking. Red Sox you Rock always have and always will in my eyes. Thank You 🙏
RIP Blockbuster.. RIP 20th Century. The pre-show nearly made me cry, tears were in my eyes. God damn i love baseball! I played little league from 4-16 and those were the best damn times of my life, with all the friends I made some of which I still actively keep in touch with today. All because I experienced a slice t of what makes calling America home life great, but the most important part of it all was having my father by my side through the wild and crazy ride.
Nicely said. I feel extremely lucky to have been a boy during the early 60's, and seen many of those greats play. Especially Rod Carew, Killebrew and Brooks Robinson.
Ted Williams said in an interview that you can't assume hypothetical situations. If he and Bob Feller were not in the service what records would they have broken or established cannot be assumed.
And for one brief moment in time, everyone on that field were like children again, surrounding their childhood hero with nothing but smiles.....and were reminded by the baseball gods that in the end, it's just a game. This was truly a magical moment in baseball history.
Being an impressionable kid at the age of 11 I, like so many other kids around the world were so lucky to experience watching this on TV. We'll never get to witness line-ups like these before. What a great memory. Thanks for making this watchable to the public.
Imagine going to something special and then holding a cell phone in front of your face the entire time to take a shaky video with terrible sound while there is a camera crew professionally shooting it
All those big, top-of-their-game, world-class ballplayers with the world at their feet, crowding around with their eyes popping out, like Little Leaguers looking for an autograph. That's because they know they just met the greatest hitter who ever lived.
DivineSimply I didn’t know that Babe Ruth was there, lol. Ted was an amazing hitter there’s no doubt about it, but Ruth and Gehrig are the top two on my list, if Gehrig didn’t get sick he could have padded his already insane career stats. Ruth is the greatest baseball player ever because of this, before he was the most dominant hitter of all time he was a beast of a pitcher. In 1916 he was 23-12 with a 1.75 ERA, 40 starts, 9 complete game shutouts and in 323.2 innings pitched he surrendered ZERO, yes ZERO home runs, that to me is an incredible ball player. I’m a Mets fan by the way, not a Yankee fan waxing poetic about my teams historical past.
As a Boston sports fan this was my fave sports moment watching the mythical Ted Williams tip his cap at Fenway one last time along with the other legends being introduced
Tony Gwynn and Ted Williams had a special bond with each other. I truly believe there was nothing but love and respect between the 2 of them. Gwynn was the last man who truly was talented enough to hit 400.
For those of you who never saw this as it happened, Ted Williams avoided Fenway Park after he retired. This was his first public appearance. It reminded me of the movie CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, when everyone walked up to the aliens. :-) It was also the last time we looked at MLB players with wide eyes and respect. There we see McGwire whom I went out of my way to watch as he belted out home run #53, I collected all tickets that had him break the HR record. Folks tried to obtain those tickets as collectibles and now they are just kindling. Yet seeing Ted Williams was a thrill.
+Doug Koehler Honestly what is it with Boston greats and this city. Bird, Williams, Russel avoid this town like the plague. Granted Russel had his reason. My dad said right before Ted came out "no way in hell he wears a Sox cap." And he was right.
@@Shatamx williams didnt come out in a redsox cap cause his evil bastard son forced him to schill for somerhing. And this wasnt the first time he was arlt fenway since he retired. He was there for his old timees games and his number being retired
Best pedro performance. In front of his home city, 6 of the best batters. Struck out 5 of them and the 6th made it to first on a error by the 2nd baseman who was in awe of what he was witnessing and caught of his guard. Amazing to watch again and we will probably not see anything like it in our lifetime again.
Wow, talk about a game, when it was a game! Saw this live in '99, was 23 years old, been a lifelong Yankees fan, my dad goes back to the days of Whitey, Mickey, Yogi, Joe D, & all the greats that played then, but, to see the greatest hitter ever, Ted Williams, the ovation he got wasn't long enough! God bless Teddy Ballgame & baseball
this is pregame one of best to ever watch some may say 2008 Yankee Stadium with all players on their positions. That was awesome to but nothing beats seeing Ted Williams with that ovation wow
Kevin Costner in the open makes this special! Thanks y'all from a fan who grew up with the Braves and as a Tampa kid has grown to love the Rays as well!
What a great tribute to some of the greatest players of the 20th century! I miss those mask cams, I can't imagine what a 103 mph Aroldis Chapman fastball looks like with that; especially since we have HD GoPro cams now... Entertaining All-Star game too :D crazy how Ichiro had the exact same rundown to 1st base to start the AL in 2001 as Lofton did in this one.
I didnt really understand how truly special this was until I looked over to see my dad crying. I never asked him why because I knew he loved the game and wasnt shy about showing emotion, Im 40 now and the question I didnt ask has been answered many times. The older I get the more it gets answered.
Ted Williams forever. Donna Summer, Larry Walker, Mark Mcgwire, Matt Williams, Samy Sosa, Cal Ripken, Mike Piazza, Ken Griffey Jr, Tony Gwinn, Roger Clemens, Randy Johnson, Steve Carton, Nomar garciaparra, Ernie Banks, Hank Aron, Jimmy Wlliams, Carl Yastrenzky, Reggie Jackson, Curt Schilling, Pedro martinez, Roger Clemens, Barry Larkin, Jim Thome, Willy mays, Kenny Lofton, Al Kaline, Juan Marichal, David Cone, Jeromy Burnitz, Mike Mussina, Jeff Bagwell, Ed Sprague, Jeff Kent, Gary Sheffield, Derek Jeter, Rafael Palmeiro, Ivan Rodrigue
I never saw it originally until now. I heard so much about it. yes even years later it choked me up especially watching when Ted Williams came out. I got misty I can tell you, lol
Nothing better then this, all those legends of the game on one field something similar happened at the 08 game it's getting me emotional because I lost my dad a couple years ago and their were nothing else that bonded us more as a father and son then Sports especially baseball again nothing better then this
Thank you so much for downloading the entire pre-game, and particularly The Splendid Splinter. He's been my baseball hero since I was a 9 year old in 1960, and the more I learned about him later, the more I admired him. Maybe the greatest hitter who ever lived, but his character, his integrity, and his service to his country in two wars makes him my hero. I've not seen his like since, but I keep hoping. I hope you are up there timing a Bob Feller fastball right now.
I was 10 when this game happened and I remember recognizing, even at my young age, just how much more special THIS game was than all the rest. The all-century team, Ted Williams being carted out and seeing how excited he was to shake Tony Gwynn's hand (the only guy in this whole game who actually could have hit .400, he almost did in 1994 BTW, the both grew up in San Diego, CA too). Goddamn man, this brought a tear to my eye. Thanks for posting.
I’m still trying to understand how this was over 20 years ago. My childhood was adoring these players. It was all I talked about in school. I knew all the teams, the players, and the divisions. Gosh. Is this how people felt in 2002 in regards to 1979?? Like it wasn’t that long ago.
Getsuga Tenshou i'm not so sure he did on his last at bat. the home run you're talking about which was his last hit? I heard an interview he did years after that and he said it went through his mind to tip his cap but he decided at the last minute not to do it and he didn't. that's what he said
Ted Williams is truly the GOAT of baseball! The media hated him is why he doesn't get thet "GOAT" designation but the players and the fans all knew it. RIP GOAT

Tony Shaking hands with Ted is the best thing to happen ever, San Diegan to San Diegan, and local icon to national icon. I didn’t have the chance to meet or see either one, but I’m glad that they met each other and in baseball’s oldest ballpark, to me if I think about it more and more it’s one of the coolest and greatest things to happen in baseball and San Diego sports history, it wasn’t game changing at all, it was just an incredible moment in baseball
It's so sad to see a bunch of All-Stars, most of which cheated by using steroids, shake the hand of a man, a legend, who played this game with honesty and integrity.
Hector Rodriguez The internet is a thing nowadays. You can't get facts wrong unless you are just lazy and talking nonsense. It's not hard, Hector. www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/8769398/a-writer-gives-hall-fame-vote
39:29 probably one of the greatest moments in the sport. Everyone wanted to talk to Ted and he wanted to talk to everyone. It got to a point where the PA announcer had to tell all the ballplayers to go back to their dugouts so the game could begin!
I remember watching this live i was 19 dam near 44 now time flies 2 san Diego icons ted Williams and tony Gwynn rip 🙏🏿 and it's a crime pete rose wasn't at least honored here
the baseball is a sport frankly just awesome. Holy shit, Americans know how to make a sport truly fascinating and grandiose with their Hollywood-like intros. I love this country so much, and yet I am French.
As a 39 year old in 2023, and a lifelong fan of Williams, even now, when he comes out, I still tear up. Shame his fuck of a son made him wear that hat.
This is not just the best All-Star game. It's one of the most remarkable events in the history of baseball. Aside from Ted Williams' entrance and asides with players, there are a bunch of little moments that are priceless, including Reggie Jackson mouthing the words "Carl Yastrzemski" when Yaz is introduced, Jim Rice getting Willie Mays' autograph. Oh, yeah, then there was the game and Pedro racking up Ks. And who better to sing the National Anthem than Donna Summer? An all-around dream game.
This literally felt like I was watching a real life Field of Dreams. Especially since some of the All Century team has passed. Almost as if death was defeated and this was some grand reunion in heaven in the future.
Bryant Oliveira sometimes I feel like the real Field of Dreams should've had deceased legends like Babe Ruth, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Cy Young , Lou Gehrig, Ty Cobb, Mickey Mantle, Rogers Hornsby, Honus Wagner, Joe DiMaggio and Lefty Grove.
Stoked when I saw this game was on RUclips. Devastated when I saw it was Joe Buck doing the game. I can't believe I've been putting up with his shit for fifteen years.
The Ted Williams intro and then to follow that up by Pedro striking out the side in front of his home crowd - Amazing. One of the best moments baseball has ever seen.
Now it’s straight trash
If I had a time machine, I would go back to the 90s just to relive not just my era growing up but to relive this era of baseball

wow I was only 7 when this happened, I hardly remember any of it. im glad it is on here
It's the best ever all star game with Ted and Pedro at the same time in stadium.
There are legendary players…..then there are legends. The greatest hitter who ever lived.
Greatest MLB All-Star Game of all-time
I wish the all star game would come back to Fenway, I would go in a heartbeat
Setzer Don't worry, Pedro took care of the steriod users and struck out 5 of 6 ;)
It's cheating on the same level Willie Mays downed amphetamines during his time.
It's so sad to see such absent minded people speak
Hector Rodriguez The internet is a thing nowadays. You can't get facts wrong unless you are just lazy and talking nonsense. It's not hard, Hector.

@Hector Rodriguez otters cant play baseball, small hands
@The Ghost Ridiculous! People who knew him said he was the strongest, kick your ass guy they ever saw. Start to finish.
39:29 probably one of the greatest moments in the sport. Everyone wanted to talk to Ted and he wanted to talk to everyone. It got to a point where the PA announcer had to tell all the ballplayers to go back to their dugouts so the game could begin!
Rest in peace to Ted Williams. One of the greatest to play the game.
Winding down the millennium... I like it.
Kenny Lofton and Albert Belle belong in the Hall of Fame.
As a 39 year old in 2023, and a lifelong fan of Williams, even now, when he comes out, I still tear up. Shame his fuck of a son made him wear that hat.
Elaborate, please(?)
@@GratefulInRecovery Ted's son was very exploitative of his dad in his dad's advancing age. It's really sad.
Hahaha 41:36 Ted Williams apologizing to Nomar...does he say "I'm sorry I missed your party but I got loaded"?? Awesome.
Stoked when I saw this game was on RUclips. Devastated when I saw it was Joe Buck doing the game. I can't believe I've been putting up with his shit for fifteen years.
They didn't even invite Sandy Koufax. Apparently they assumed he wouldn't come. No excuse for that. He would have been there if asked.
Pedro. Goodness gracious.
By far the best all star game ever.
