    I started playing through Rogue Galaxy again, and the game would pause when opening up the main menu, opening up shops, sometimes even the music would just cut out for several seconds while the game was trying to load up an NPCs text! I followed your video to open up and clean the PS2 (except for disassembling the top part), put it back together, and the game is running so smoothly

    my ps2 slim has a bit of rust near the bottom right on some of the metal bit

    • @Vigerp
      @Vigerp  6 лет назад +2

      A little rust will typically not make any difference, as long as it is not across a trace on the board. However, if you are a perfectionist and don't like seeing rust, there are a couple of ways to remove it. You could use place the metal piece in vinegar, and it would eat through the rust. But this is ONLY if the piece of metal is NOT attached to any electronics, as the vinegar would eat through that as well. Another solution is to simply use some sand paper or a file and manually file the rust off. This would leave behind scratches, though. So, a lot of times, it is just easier to leave a little rust spot be, as it really does not hurt your console.

    So would it be pointless for me to get a slim should i just stick with getting a fat model?

    • @Vigerp
      @Vigerp  6 лет назад +3

      Both versions have pros and cons. The slim tends to be the most popular due to the smaller size, but personally I prefer the fat. Mostly for sentimental reasons, as that was the first console I bought with my own money. However, when buying a Fat, you should try to find out which model it is first. The earlier models did have some issues with the laser, so look for the 3 or 5 series. If you are interested (and live in the US), I actually have spares of both systems (slim and fat). I'll give you a good deal. :)

    Helpful video but I have a question. I fumbled around and lost the spring you pointed to at 27:40. Would a really short elastic piece help or do I somehow have to buy a small spring somewhere?

    • @Vigerp
      @Vigerp  4 года назад +2

      You know what... I honestly don't know. I mean, a very small and strong elastic band *might* work, but it wouldn't be a long term solution. The spring is similar to many other lid springs used by Sony, so you might find a broken console somewhere for real cheap. I did try to find just the spring for you on eBay, but I was unsuccessful. The only thing I could find was the entire lid assembly. rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F401875351053

If your controller ports for ps2 slim works but other model not this one as there are only 2 models anyway I think, but if your memory card slots doesnt function is it because you have to replace something? If it that, what you need to replace from your board so the memory card slots work again? in my case its both memory card slots that doesn't work

    • @Vigerp
      @Vigerp  5 лет назад

      They made several different models, each looks different on the inside. However, the same principle applies to all of them. As for the bottom, it could be stuck by grime, rust or something else. Good rule of thumb; if it feels like it won't budge, just leave it and try to clean as much as you can from there.

      Did it make a buzzing noise before, as well? It could be that the fan blades are bent out of shape. This would cause them to spin irregularly, regardless of how clean they are. The only way to fix it would be to buy a new fan assembly, then.

    • @Vigerp

      It sounds like you're saying that the disc reader is scratching the disc? If so, then yes, something is definitely in the way. Most likely it is a hard spec of dust that is trapped there, thus causing the scratches.

    • @Vigerp
      @Vigerp  6 лет назад +2

      Yes and no. If you take the console apart, then go for it. Keep in mind that the whole point of a fan is to channel hot air *away* from the CPU and GPU. So if you blow hot air into your console, you risk damaging it. If your blowdryer has a cold air setting, then go for it.

    • @Vigerp
      @Vigerp  5 лет назад

      Hey. Sorry that it took me a while to respond, but I have been very busy lately. Have you tried a different game? It sounds more like a problem with the disc than with the console. If the menu loads, then that means that the console is working and reading the disc up to that point. However, you could always try to clean the disc reader lens a bit more with a q-tip and some isopropyl alcohol. Just be careful not to use any force that could scratch the lens.

    • @Devuuse
      @Devuuse 5 лет назад +1

      @@Vigerp Thanks for the reply, and no worries :) Well the game was working before I cleaned my PS2 (the only problem is it didn't load properly, like it would load half the map and you'd have to drive into the other half then the game would freeze and unfreeze when it loaded that chunk aswell) , although every other game seems to work fine, also the music on the menu is gone, I tried cleaning my CD and I also cleaned the reading lens when cleaning my PS, not gonna lie the game is badly scratched but it worked before, why not now?

    • @Vigerp
      @Vigerp  5 лет назад

      @@Devuuse I think, from the sound of things, that it is the disc. It most likely would've decided to stop working regardless if you had cleaned your console or not. Do you have a friend or another console you can try the game on? With matters like these the best thing to do is to try to eliminate possible issues. The quickest would be to try the same game on a different console to see if you get the same result.

It is obviously connected to either the discs or the disc drive.

    • @Vigerp
      @Vigerp  5 лет назад +1

      Overheating is typically a sign of three things. Either the console sits on something that won't allow good enough ventilation through the fan vents (like sitting on a soft carpet, a pillow, or being enclosed in a cupboard with the door closed). It could also be a sign that the thermal paste has cracked, making a bad heat transfer to the heatsinks. Lastly, it could be as simple as dust blocking the fan and the fan vents, which causes hot air to build up inside the console.

      For deep scratches you could try to use a clear epoxy mixed with black paint. There are a couple of potential problems with this method, though. 1. You have to work fast, since the epoxy usually hardens quickly (unless you buy one that hardens in a longer time). 2. It can be difficult to match the color of the console exactly. You might end up with a slight color spot where the crack used to be.
      Basically. You need to fill the crack with something, and match the color of the console. Then sand it down flush.
